barbie movie has me thinking again about how the whole schtick of "danger prone daphne" is just "haha, laugh at the woman" for 'failing' or being 'weak' in the same ways every other member of the gang does, to about the same quantity as other members as well. and the continued "arc" for her of "what is my purpose/value within the gang" because she is given no presumed competence or intelligence or value she's granted because of how she looks or acts or the things she cares about or takes interest in. even going so far as to have other members of the gang join in on this "yeah, what purpose do you serve?" thing and make it a comedic relief thing in (i believe) trick or treat, scooby doo because even within the gang they cannot and/or will not value or affirm her as a person in the ways they do or will for other characters. her femininity is seen as a detractor from her worth.

Ok do you have like? Actual examples of fred being abusive in way cause I watched the entire show this year and at most he's a little blunt, which the rest of the gang is too. really trying to see your point of view here but I absolutely cannot parse it

To be clear, I did not call him abusive. The connotation of that is a lot more deliberate and violent (even verbally) than I think he's necessarily guilty of.

Also, you don't have to see it my way. I'm not expecting anyone to hold a 54 year old cartoon character to the same standards as I do. You don't have to feel bad about liking him because someone else hates him and thinks he's not nice. It is not a competition of morality or media literacy. There's a lot worse things in the franchise than Fredward Jones being bossy and uptight.

I'm saying this because I'm worried that you're taking the opinions of a stranger on the internet too much to heart. You do you.

That being said, it is Fred who coins the term "Danger-Prone Daphne" and uses it with the most frequency despite, as I said, her truly bring no more danger prone than the rest of the gang. (Velma only uses it a handful of times, if that)

This scene happens several minutes BEFORE Daphne falls through the floor into a mineshaft and Fred makes a big stink about "wouldn't you know it? Danger Prone Daphne fell into a mineshaft!" (Mine Your Own Business).

Shut up you hypocrite! Don't shame someone for something that you did first!

Idk it's just a recurring theme that has been immortalized out of context, justifying the claim that Daphne doesn't contribute to the gang. It drives me bonkers.

Where the Scooby Gang at?

Well gang we've got another mystery on our hands

Genuinely I think at this point the whole "Daphne was just useless in the original series" is misogyny. She and Fred did the exact same stuff, found the same amount of clues as each other (if anything daphne found more) and were both the "faces" of the gang. Basically the only thing Daphne didn't do that Fred did was drive the van.

And if you include the Scrappy era she did that too and also found more stuff cause she stuck with the gang

The "danger prone" bit is just as much Shaggy as her, and if anything I associate "falling into a trap door" with him over her (not to mention Fred does it IN THE TITLE SEQUENCE). And the whole Kidnapping thing is like. Barely there? It happens with the clown and I can't remember many more instances in WAY.

Anyways all of this to say we have no need for plotlines in Scooby-Doo films where Daphne "works to have a place in the gang" SHE HAS ONE SHE'S THEIR FRIEND AND SHE FINDS CLUES AND SHE CAN DO ANYTHING WITH LIMITED RESOURCES
