Look closely enough and you’ll find that Eric Johnson was always a Republican, or at least very susceptible to becoming one. Conservative “Democrats” are one bribe or one hurt feeling away from switching parties.
This highlights the significance of how much more important primaries are, because after the primaries are over, then it becomes an endless chorus of, “vote for the lesser evil” and “vote blue no matter who,” and we have more than enough bad examples of where that can lead to, right??
Tumblr media
Honestly, always vote for the most leftist, progressive candidate you can in the primary elections, before it comes down to voting for a Republican vs. Republican-lite in the general election.
I don’t think there are primary elections for mayoral races, but I still love the idea that if a candidate switches political parties (any time after the primaries, I’d suggest), then they should A) not be allowed to hold the office they ran for until they run + win as a member of their new party, B) pay heavy fines from their personal funds, C) they should be forced to resign, and D) the election should be re-done.
The Democratic Party needs to tighten up and make some rules regarding who can and cannot run as a Democrat.
Tumblr media
Literally months before SCOTUS overturned Roe v. Wade, Nancy Pelosi was backing a homophobic, anti-abortion, “Democratic” 🙄 candidate named Henry Cuellar, saying that a candidate’s stance on abortion wasn’t important. And Cuellar’s opponent was a young pro-abortion, pro-LGBTQ immigration attorney named Jessica Cisneros! And it was a relatively safe blue district, meaning that whichever Democrat the DNC backed, they were likely to win and a Republican hadn’t won that district in forever. AND before that, Pelosi and the DCCC threw their weight behind another openly homophobic “Democrat” named Dan Lipinski.
Tumblr media
Could you even imagine Mitch McConnell or Kevin McCarthy openly throwing their support behind a pro-abortion candidate who wanted gun control? No? So why tf does Democratic leadership constantly foist GOP-lite candidates onto the Democratic Party when other viable options exist?
Just a guess on my part, but if you want fewer anti-abortion laws getting passed, then you should probably back fewer anti-abortion candidates. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
“Vote blue no matter who” has bitten Democrats in the ass wayyy more than any converse slogan has bitten Republicans. Because Republicans actually vet their candidates and make sure that those candidates want the same deplorable things that their deplorable base wants.
And just for clarity, because I know how the internet works and how sycophants love twisting words: I am NOT saying don’t vote for Biden in 2024. I’m not even saying to support a third party candidate. I want Trump and all Republicans gone in the next few election cycles. What I am saying is, once the election is over and hopefully Trump/DeSantis have been vanquished, we need to seriously rework how the Democratic Party has been run. Losing Roe v. Wade is indicative of how poorly it’s been mismanaged.
Anyway, new laws can be made, so especially after the Supreme Court has ignored and undone so many standing legal precedents, I don’t wanna hear jack shit about “pie-in-the-sky” or “be realistic.”
This centrism bullshit ain’t working, yo.

Republicans running as “Democrats” is a much bigger problem than we give it credit for.
It’s very telling how you never find Democrats running as Republicans (the GOP would never allow that), but you frequently find Republicans successfully running as Democrats. Democrats need to be much more selective about who they allow to run in democratic primaries and democratic elections.

Again, you NEVER see this go the other way around, where Republicans suddenly switch to being a Democrat. Because in sooo many ways, conservative Democrats are already Republicans.
Democrats need to do better. Much, much better.

What a delightfully silly episode!
The subway scenes were okay but the escalating war back in the courtroom was exceptionally funny. You really get the feeling that the show is just going for it.
And, best of all, it was a story with heart and some feelgood moments.

How To Lose a Primary, 2020-Style
So far in 2020, four House incumbents have lost renomination to their seats (five if you count New York Democrat Eliot Engel, though absentee ballots in New York haven't been tabulated). But there are ... differences between what causes a Republican and a Democrat to lose their own party's nomination. For example, Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-IL) was one of the most conservative members of his caucus -- opposing abortion rights, gay rights, and Obmaa care -- despite representing a D+6 seat. If you're wondering how he got elected in the first place, the answer is that the seat was previously held by his own father who -- in classic machine fashion -- won renomination and then announced his retirement, inducing the local party to hand the nomination to his son. He was defeated by Marie Newman, who narrowly lost a challenge in 2018 and by all appearances is a perfectly normal Democrat. This is not at all abnormal. Contrast that to what happened last night, where Rep. Scott Tipton (R-CO) was stunningly unseated by conservative activist Lauren Boebert. Nobody had the race on their radar because Tipton, who enjoyed Trump's endorsement, hardly seemed to have committed any sins against the conservative movement which would generate primary opposition (The Onion notwithstanding). So what was it about Boebert which caused her to surge to victory? Well, she's a qAnon-endorsing conspiracy theorist whose main claim to fame is running a bar called "Shooters" where the staff openly carries guns and which defied orders to shutdown in the midst of the coronavirus epidemic. Of course, it's not always better when the incumbent loses because of their apostasies -- particularly when one considers what counts as "apostasy" in the modern GOP. Rep. Denver Riggleman (R-VA) also enjoyed Trump's backing, but lost renomination in a "drive-through convention" to far-right challenger Bob Good. Riggleman's wrongdoing? He officiated a same-sex wedding for two of his former staffers. That's enough to get you bounced in the 2020 Republican Party. But I guess Republicans did manage to dislodge their most openly White supremacist member this  year -- so good on them for that. via The Debate Link https://ift.tt/3eRKguh

Incredibly bad advice, from the same people who say “defund the police” and “green new deal” are dumb slogans
Who you vote for matters almost as much as the act of voting itself, otherwise why even bother voting?
And because I understand how sycophantic, Blue MAGA cultists think, I want be super clear here: Please dO vote. I am not telling anyone to not vote; and I am not suggesting that voting is unimportant. What I am saying is this: voting in the primaries is incredibly important—vote before the conservative, GOP-lite, DNC hand picked candidate is shoved down our throats as the get-things-done, pragmatic, “lesser evil.”
And I’m also saying that we shouldn’t put all of our eggs in the “electoral politics” basket. Organizing, protesting, and engaging mutual aid groups matter just as much, if not more. Especially at a time when SCOTUS is obliterating voting rights, and Republicans are targeting and diluting the strength of entire voting blocks with gerrymandering.
Centrists like to point at Roe being overturned and then smugly say, “voting matters!” as if they somehow weren’t directly involved in helping it happen. Breaking news: adding more anti-choice politicians to Congress gets you more, not less, anti-choice legislation passed. It’s not rocket science.
Tumblr media
“Control of the House and the Senate” seems like a moot point when politicians like Henry Cueller, Dan Lipinski, Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin vote with Republicans and against Democrats most of the time anyway.
