I just re-read the captive prince trilogy after 9 years so here are some thoughts and observations (I read a physical copy while listening to the audiobbok):
No spoilers
the books are super easy to read, I read each of them in a day and never once did I get bored or felt like I needed to take a break. If you enjoy them I feel like they work perfectly if you are in a reading slump.
I might be biased because I was also listening to it while reading but I feel like the writing worked just fine. I saw people say that the writing was awful but I didn't have any problems at all with it. I was never once confused by what was happening on page nor did I ever feel like too little or too much was being said and described.
One of my gripes with the writing comes in book 3 because I felt like the two parts that had Laurent POV just didn't work because it didn't feel like it was a stylistic choice and it didn't feel natural or needed, it just made me think that the author didn't know how to write that from Demen POV (which makes no sense because I know she can)
not only that but I also feel like it would've worked much better if we didn't get those scenes and continued with Demen's knowledge instead of making us privy to something he didn't know. I genuinely think they were unnecessary.
I might've missed something but in book 3 there is also a part where I felt like what Demen is thinking in a chapter and then what he claims and thinks a few chapters later don't align. With no spoilers, this is how it felt to me: chapter 1: demen thoughts: the apple fell from the tree chapter 3: demen thoughts and words: I knew the apple didn't fall on it's own and that there was a reason for it to fall.
I don't know why people say that these books handle its dark themes badly. Personally I think it handled everything quite well. Just because every 3 seconds the author isn't telling you "this is bad" it doesn't mean that it's poorly done or supports any of the bad things that happen.
The characters live in extremely flawed societies that have practices that we wouldn't condemn, so of course they will not immediately start out being against them, it wouldn't make sense, instead throughout the books and events they slowly start to realise why some things are bad. It's called character development.
Not only that, words coming out of a flawed and traumatised character shouldn't be taken as the moral of the book but as what they are: words of a flawed and traumatised character who is lashing out.
I feel like many people saw that very bad things that happen in these books and instrad of saying "I can't read that", which is fair, they decided to take the high horse and act as if it's morally wrong to like these books because bad things are portrayed in them.
Book 2 I think was my favourite, I devoured it and it was just super fun to read.
My second gripe is with Jokaste but without spoiling anything I can only say that her character was imo wasted and that it just felt like the author had 2 very different ideas of who she was in book 1 and book 3.
I LOVE laurent, he's just the type of characters that I enjoy, cold and guarded on the outside but only because he wants to protect himself while being also sweet.
Also really enjoyed many of the side characteristics which I thought were really interesting (I would've enjoyed more interactions between those other characteristics and L and D but that's a personal taste)
I actually think that 9 years ago I only read the first book and the first half of the second while skimming through the rest lmao
also I will not tell you which character I didn't like at all and found annoying when I was 16 but would die for in an instant now because you'll think 16 years old me was psychopath because what the fuck

thoughts: kr chapter 14
Damen spent two fruitless hours with Nikandros trying to plot a course (...), until Laurent wandered in and outlined a plan so outrageous that Damen had said yes with the feeling that his mind was splitting apart. how much pleasure do you think laurent got out of damen going with his plan instead of nikandros'?
(...) the young, triple-crowned Pallas, Lazar, who had whistled at him, (...) i would like a pallas x lazar spinoff
(...) Damen tried not to think too deeply about the reasons why Laurent thought it necessary to bring a physician. i reread chapter 13 and honestly i wouldn't be surprised if damen was worried about injury while laurent was planning for something else, like jokaste said: "he has his own plans." idk what he's expecting to happen but maybe the 'outrageous plan' and paschal being with them means more? ugh no idea
(...) ‘I see. My wife is the leverage for my good behaviour?’ ‘That’s right,’ said Laurent. is it just me or is easily admitting to something not really characteristic of laurent? i want to know how he said it. was it just "that's right" or was it "that's right" with a glint of "you're so dumb" flickering in his eyes? every chapter i read i think of that one part in book 1 (i think??) where damen tells laurent he doesn't think laurent does anything without ten different motives (that's me paraphrasing obv, i can't remember the exact words :/)
Damen dropped the pitcher. stop
Laurent’s arms were bare. His throat was bare. His collarbone was bare, and most of his thighs, his long legs, and all of his left shoulder. Damen stared at him. horny damen is back!!!! <3333
Laurent sat down. (...) It was even shorter sitting down. he's not even listening, is he?
'Yes. Sorry,’ said Damen. And then: ‘What were you saying?“ lmao i loooove damen so much
They had only twelve soldiers. Twelve-ish, amended Damen, thinking of Paschal and Guion. let me repeat that: i love damen (and his sass)
of course nikandros disagrees. remember when laurent asked damen if he thought nikandros would like him? i guess we all know the answer lol (maybe someday ☻)
'I wish to restate my strong objection,’ said Nikandros. ‘It’s noted,’ said Damen. I LOOOVE DAMEN
Even so, Damen heard himself saying. ‘You can’t just barge in on—’ ‘Open the wagon,’ said the Captain, ignoring him. if only this dude knew who he's really speaking to
also how are they getting out of this lol
Laurent stepped out of the wagon, (...). He said, ‘How did you convince Jokaste to play along with the guards?’ ‘I didn’t,’ said Laurent. no way
He tossed the wad of blue silk in his hands to one of the soldiers to dispose of, then shrugged into his jacket in a rather mannish gesture. IN A RATHER MANNISH GESTURE
laurent is so hot
i'm so sorry but he's literally so hot
"Don't think about it too much,' said Damen. can you believe how far laurent and damen have come? the easy acceptance of each other's personalities, the appreciation for how much they've helped and will continue to help each other by one person making up for what the other lacks, the absence of judgement? and just, in general, how well they know each other by now? i just love them. i love them.
Laurent held out his hand to escort her back from the supply wagon into the main wagon, a bored Veretian gesture. Her eyes had the same bored look as she took his hand. ‘You’re lucky we’re alike,’ she said, stepping down. They looked at one another like two reptiles. i imagine nikandros staring at damen right now and i know exactly what his face would look like
(...) ‘I’ll be swift, and I’ll take our best rider with me.’ ‘That’s me,’ said Laurent, wheeling his horse. i just think they're very sexy
'The undergrowth was thinner when I was a boy.’ ‘Or you were.' stop flirting omg (jk pls go on)
damen constantly thinking about all the nice places he wants to take laurent and the people he wants to introduce him to and the memories he wants to make with him... it's doing things to me. he's so in love. they're so in love. <3
'You left the dress in the wagon,’ said Damen. ‘Thank you, I do have other ways of getting past a sentry.' yay more flirting!
'You’re late,’ said Damen. ‘I brought you a souvenir.’ Laurent tossed Damen an apricot. Damen could feel the quiet exultation of Laurent’s men, while the Akielons looked a little dazed. laurenttttt (i said that with a squeal)
‘Is this how you do things in Vere?’ ‘You mean effectively?’ said Laurent. (...) lauuuureeeennttttt <33333 (he's so cute and i love him and i know damen's competency kink just flared up again but can laurent pls stop needling nikandros lol)
(...) Earlier, Laurent had tossed Damen his bedroll and said, ‘Unpack this,’ and Pallas had almost challenged him to a duel for the insult. (...) imagine if pallas knew even half of all that happened between damen and laurent lol. also it's not like damen is a perfect gentleman but, you know. i appreciate the loyalty (and love pallas)
Damen poured a shallow cup of wine and passed it to the soldier beside him (Pallas), and there was a long silence in which Pallas stood obviously garnering every piece of courage that he had to reach out and take it. damen is so good to his men; i love that he knows pallas meant well, so this is a nice gesture. also, bc it's just impossible to ignore: damen is so hot.
Laurent strolled up to the impasse, threw himself down on the log next to Damen, and in an expressionless voice launched into the story of the brothel adventure that had earned him the blue dress, which was so unabashedly filthy it made Lazar blush, and so funny it had Pallas wiping his eyes. (...) i just got super emotional bc remember when in the beginning of book 2, damen told laurent he needed to bond with his men in a way that wasn't just manipulation and laurent said he didn't have time for that? i love that it's happening now, and has of course been happening for a while, but that laurent is coming more out of his shell and actually enjoying himself now and then.
Pallas did a decent impression of Paschal’s riding. Lazar watched Pallas with lazy admiration. It wasn’t the impression he was admiring. Damen bit into the apricot. 1) i will read all the lazar x pallas fics there are. 2) damen always noticing the soldiers flirting is so funny to me. first jord and aimeric, now these two
laurent and damen lying side by side under the stars ahhhhh
'You smell of horse,’ said Damen. ‘It’s how I got past the dog.' whyyyy am i so emotional? can you believe i'm crying over damen saying laurent smells lol
'You want me wandering around the Akielon countryside naked at night?’ And then, ‘You smell just as much of horse as I do.’ ‘More,’ said Damen. He was smiling. he was smiling !!!! and i am crying now :)
'They’re Artesian. Aren’t they? From the old empire, Artes. They say it used to span both our countries.' bring it back! bring back artes!
Damen heard himself say it. ‘There’s a summer palace in Ios outside the capital. (...)' His pulse beat with uncharacteristic nerves, so that he felt almost shy. ‘When all this is over . . . we could take horses and stay a week in the palace.’ (...) He felt Laurent holding himself carefully, and there was a strange pause. After a moment, Laurent said, softly, ‘I’d like that.’ you know how i just said i was crying? i am sobbing now :) damen and laurent both being shy and cute and in love and full of yearning for peace and happiness 😭 I love them so much 😭
that was such a good chapter :')

Les Liaisons Dangereuses
@lamenweek Day 6: Auguste Lives AU.
For years they had been on the brink of war. It had seemed inevitable and yet suddenly here they were; the furthest south any Veretian royalty had been in a generation, ready to peddle peace. To sign a treaty nearly four years in the making. Since the truce at Marlas.
Yes, and Damen was a celibate who planned to join a temple. He didn’t buy it for a second, but that didn’t mean they could afford to have this go any way other than perfect. Every protocol had to be observed, the questionable etiquettes from the Veretian court had to be respected and catered to, the volcanic ground of cultural differences must be carefully navigated and they must not -under any circumstances- offend the delegation or give them cause to pull out of the peace treaty.
He was on the balcony, overlooking the courtyard. Nikandros on his right was frowning, equally as annoyed as Damen over hosting half the Veretian Royals for the summer. On his left was Jokaste, leaning against the rails and watching avidly as the train of horses spilled into the courtyard on a wave of blue and gold.
Her skin was strikingly pale against the dark crimson of her gown and Damen was not unaware of the way she let her own fingers dance across her one bare shoulder and clavicle. Look at me the gesture said. Damen looked, with her he would always look. But not touch. Not yet.
Jokaste had been the object of his affections for months now. He’d been courting her from the moment he’d seen her but she was too smart to give in too quickly. Nikandros might call Damen stupid sometimes but stupid he most definitely was not. He knew what kind of games women like Jokaste wanted to play and he was not interested in gifting a grasping minor Lords daughter the throne. Though admittedly, he’d come close several times when the tension reached a fever pitch and she made her smirking excuses. But he knew better. Marginally.
“Here we go,” Nikandros said drawing Damen’s attention back to the scene below.
The Veretians were coming to a halt in the courtyard. They were a large party and Damen could not help the way his eyes went inevitably to the head. The Princes were easy to spot, dismounting first, in clothes so tight and so fussy Damen had to wonder how on Earth you’d get them off.
Auguste drew his gaze first.
The Crown Prince had hair like spun gold and a commanding presence. He was a few years older than Damen and made every show of paying due respect as he greeted his father. The younger brother was about eighteen and followed behind him, hair a shade paler than Auguste’s. Prince Laurent had a smaller frame and was some inches shorter but he carried himself as though the whole place was beneath him. His bow to the King was not quite so impressively eager as his brothers had been.
They were both obscenely attractive. The rumours did not lie it would seem.
“Just your type,” Jokaste said inclining her head to the princes below.
“And yours,” Nik said from Damen’s other side “Royal, wealthy, and pretty… that’s what you like isn’t it Jo?”
“Some of us have taste, yes,” she said without taking her eyes off the Veretian Princes
Nikandros scoffed, grumbling about Jokaste as Damen stared at his father gesticulating below, looking imposing and battle hardened next to the silks and fuss of Vere. The clothes didn’t look bad on the princes though, quite the opposite and Jokaste was right, they were his favoured type. Which she well knew.
He watched for a few long moments, the unnecessary ceremony of greeting the Royals upon the steps that his father observed only as a nod to Veretian custom. A custom Damen had refused. But from his vantage on the balcony he could watch and assess easy enough.
Auguste was talking, too far away for his voice to carry but it wasn’t him he watched. Prince Laurent beside him drew Damen’s gaze despite himself. He looked bored at best. Disdainful at worst. His lip curled and he turned his head often, eyes wandering; inspecting, judging. Damen wanted to rile against the disregard. And he did. Was.
But there was no denying his beauty. Damen was overcome with visions of ruining his stiff poise, of wiping the derisive expression from his face, of wrecking the tight laces and making all that pale skin turn pink and blotchy on his cheeks, and chest, and between his thighs. Of what he’d look like on his knees and begging for whatever Damen would give him.
“I know that look,” Nikandros said after a few seconds, which had Jokaste turning her eyes on him
“Which one are you going after?” Jokaste said, apropos of nothing.
Damen scoffed “who said I’m going after either of them?”
They were Veretian after all, pretty they may be but Damen knew better than to follow through with any momentary desires. Especially desires born from a place that felt like lust but with all the sharp edges of animosity.
Nikandros laughed “Damen they’re blonde, unobtainable, and beautiful, surely the only question is, which one?”
“I don’t think he’s fussy which Nikandros,” Jokaste smiled, feline and sultry all at once.
“I think he’ll go for which ever one you’re not going for,” Nikandros fired back
“Who said I am?” Jokaste smiled, leaning further to see around Damen, eyes on Nikandros.
It was Damen’s turn to smile eyes still on the Prince below “because there is a Y in the day and air in your lungs,”
“Are you calling me a whore Damianos?” She asked, not unpleasantly
“Never dear, I’m merely saying you play this game well,” he said, tearing his eyes away from Laurent to grin at her.
She studied him for a beat “better than you?”
Damen scoffed “now I wouldn’t say that,”
“Prove it then,”
“I don’t like the sound of this,” Nikandros said straightening to stare at Jokaste too as she reached up to toy with the necklace sitting prettily at her throat; coral and pearl. A gift from Damen himself.
“Prove it?” he asked distracted for a beat by the way her teeth nipped at her lip.
She nodded, already smirking “how about a little bet?”
Nikandros instantly groaned “Damen, a bet? This isn’t wise, your father would kill you, this is a peace summit remember, if they found out you were making sport of them-”
“I remember,” he said, cutting him off, still staring at Jokaste “name it,”
Behind him Nikandros let out a put-upon sigh and Jokaste smiled widely.
“A race,”
“Race?”
“First to bed one of the Veretian Princes wins,” she said and she most definitely had his attention. This was what he liked about Jokaste. She never failed to surprise him.
“And what do we win?” he asked because if she was making a wager she would have something in mind most definitely.
“If I win I want an independent title,” she said
It wasn’t impossible. Highly unlikely and almost unheard of. But he could do it. It was better than her asking for a crown. His father would kill him though, so it was a good job he didn’t plan on losing.
“And if I win?” Damen asked “what do I get?”
Jokaste’s laugh was melodic and she stepped into him, tipping her head up, so close they were all but touching “something you want,” she said and though she had lowered her tone the loud tut from Nikandros behind him meant he’d heard her anyway.
“And what do I want?”
“Me,” She said simply, shrugging one gentle shoulder with a sultry smile. She wasn’t wrong. And it couldn’t be so very hard, could it? Damen was very good at getting what he wanted; he’d just never played with stakes before. He didn’t even think about it. For Jokaste, to have her, he’d do worse than play a silly game of bets and wagers.
“The terms?” he asked, gratified by the pleased expression on her face.
“No cheating, you can’t tell them it’s a bet, it doesn’t matter which one you get as long as you get one into bed,” she said still staring up at him as though daring him to naysay her, she looked thoughtful for a moment before adding “to win you have to fuck one of them, or let them fuck you if you’re feeling adventurous,”
“Deal,” he said and shook her outstretched hand, entranced by the slow smile pulling at her mouth.
Simple enough. No loophole. Hands and mouths didn't count. It had to be all in. A fair game.
Perhaps the Veretian visit wouldn’t be quite as tedious as he had feared. He was going to fuck not one but two pretty blondes by the time they were leaving again. A golden Prince and Jokaste. It was all the incentive he could possibly need.
Damen dropped her hand, turned his face back to the scene below and was almost surprised to see at least one Veretian head had turned toward their balcony. Laurent did not immediately look away, in fact, he almost made Damen feel as though he were the one who had been caught staring. But Damen didn’t look away and it was only Auguste putting a hand on Laurent’s shoulder that drew the younger Prince's attention away from the balcony. He had not looked impressed. Perhaps Damen's lack of attendance had not gone unnoticed. Or unjudged. But then waiting on the steps was a Veretian tradition and he'd seen no particular reason to join when his father hadn't insisted. Kastor wasn't present either though the Veretian distaste for bastards meant he was likely to find a pressing reason to be away from court soon.
“This is a terrible idea,” Nikandros groused some moments later once they'd bid farewell to Jokaste and started toward the throne room.
“Don’t worry Nik it’s just a game,” Damen said, flashing him a smile “besides you said yourself, the only question is, which one?”
Nikandros flashed him an unimpressed look but Damen already knew exactly which one he wanted. The only real question was how far he’d go to get him.
~*~
Aware the Damen/Jokaste may be breaking the rules somewhat and that I’m relying heavily on the fact everyone knows the plot line of Cruel Intentions. That is my excuse and I am sticking to it because this has been living rent-free in my head for a while.

What a fantastic crew of writers and artists who took part this year 🙌
It’s been an absolute joy to see these new works—diverse and clever and hot and heartfelt—huge thanks to everyone who took part and my lovely fellow mods for making it happen ❤️
Seasons of Capri 2023: Cycles & Circles - Masterlist!
Tumblr media
Thanks to everyone who participated in the fest this year and made it such a success. Scroll down for the full masterlist, but here's a quick summary of what we did this year:
Fics submitted: 14
Fanart submitted: 3
Total number of words written: over 198,000, including four works in the 10,000-20,000 word range, and three that broke 30,000
We're so grateful to everyone who signed up and made all this incredible art. We couldn't do it without your love for these characters and this fandom! ❤️
And now, here are all of the wonderful creations for this year's fest:
Sexual Intercourse by antivillain
Fic | Damen/Laurent | 2.3k
Damen's healthy enough to engage in sexual intercourse. Laurent is (emotionally) healthy enough to tease Damen mercilessly for being so awkward and uncomfortable discussing the matter with Paschal. Paschal is not paid enough.
Tie Me Down, Set Me Free by @kiseopingu
Fic | 14.3k | Damen/Laurent
When Damen gets hired by his family's sworn rival to help track the man's younger brother, he doesn't expect the road to lead him to familiar places, and familiar faces. As for Laurent, his path to freedom is clear. It's only a matter of creating an opportunity to reach it.
As past and present slowly merge, both Damen and Laurent are forced to contend with their truths, whether they want to or not.
Jokeste’s Journey by @vmcgmidlifecrisis
Fic | Jokaste/OFC | 4.3k
Jokaste travels north, meets (original character) Drifa and gets some sexy fulfilment.
Beautiful, Beloved, Strong by bluehair
Fic | Erasmus/Kallias Erasmus/Torveld | 1.5k
My prompt for The Seasons of Capri Fest 2023 was: "Kallias schemes to save Erasmus with no hope of seeing him again--until one day, he does." Hope I did it justice! Because Kallias really would do anything for love.
Returning by flightinflame
Fic | Damen/Laurent | 2.4k
Damen knew the return to Arles would be hard for Laurent. He had not considered that it would be hard for himself.
The Stand-In Wedding Planner and the Obstinate Baker by penstrikesmidnight
Fic | Damen/Laurent | 2.8k
Auguste's wedding planner has decided to go on vacation a week before his wedding, leaving Laurent, the best man, to make sure everything is taken care of. If that's not enough, Laurent has to deal with an obstinate baker who seems intent on making his job as hard as possible.
There is absolutely no chemistry between them. At all.
Heat by @linecrosser
Art | Auguste/Laurent | Digital
While in the middle of a campaign in Delfeur with his older brother, the Crown Prince of Vere, Laurent goes into his first (late) heat at age 17 (totally triggered by the presence of Damen, the stupidly handsome Crown Prince of Akeilos). There are very few things more dangerous than having an Omega in heat while camping in enemy territory, and it's too late now for suppressants. Leaving Laurent to ride out the heat on his own would mean leaving it last for three days or more. Auguste has no option but to help Laurent through it by himself, so it will last no longer than a couple hours.
Red (like our spilled blood) by @pijulle
Fic | Kastor/Laurent Damen/Laurent Auguste/OFC | 39.6k
Akielos and Vere are at war, but maybe marrying the princess of Vere would help the two country finds a common ground - "The prince!" Auguste shouts. "Laurent is a prince!"
Star Crossed by @hephaest1on
Fic | Damen/Laurent | 35.2k
A story of Laurent Capulet and Damen Montague. A tale based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, of lovers who suffer because their families are feuding. A modern AU that leans on the themes and actions in Shakespeare's original play and plays on the issues young lovers face in a world where gossip is news.
if only to dream of you by @nv-md
Fic | Damen/Laurent | 2.4k
During negotiations with the Vaskians and Patrans, Laurent falls ill and Damen must leave him to lead their newly-forged kingdom.
After a week of quiet suffering, Damen returns to their bedchambers and attends his husband.
Ruin Your Salvation, Ruin Your Mind by pretend_i_dont_exist
Fic | Damen/Laurent | 10.2k
"I do not understand. I thought we had a truce, so I came here for peace." His voice had grown hard and dangerous. "Why?"
Silence for a moment. "You killed my brother. ------- Laurent has suffered a lot since his brother's death, but he survived to his wedding day, and he's looking forward to a quiet life with a man he appreciates. New life, new him, he decides to invite his brother' killer to the wedding to talk and make peace with himself (by murdering the guy).
In Another Life by @mosrael
Fic | Halvik/Jokaste | 43.8k
Jokaste is the pearl of Ios–beautiful, intelligent, revered–and the consort of the most powerful man in Akielos… Or so she thinks. When her chosen lover’s power is corrupted and usurped by a foreign faction, Jokaste must make the hardest decision of her life: remain in Akielos and meet a perilous fate–one she had a hand in crafting–or flee to seek her future elsewhere.
Or: when getting kidnapped, then kidnapped again turns out to be the best possible thing that could happen to a girl.
antidote by @banananamilks
Fic | Damen/Laurent | 2.7k
Auguste survives Marlas, but Damen still becomes our captive prince. Actually all three princes are kind of the captive prince. oops
Soldier, Poet, King by @bluebutter-art
Art | Damen/Laurent | Digital
Two years after the bells had rung, both Akielos and Vere celebrate the wedding of their two Kings, which coincidentally falls on Vere's Annual Autumn Festival.
Chasing Meridians; Or 26,00 Miles to Home by @not-a-coral-snake
Fic | Damen/Laurent | 17k
Laurent lives a life of quiet routine, until the day a few ill-chosen words, his uncle's malice, and his own inability to back down from a challenge see him wagering half his fortune on an impossible journey to the ends of the earth and back. Happily, or perhaps unhappily, his newly-hired valet is making the journey with him and has plenty of opinions about where they should go, what they should do, and de Vere himself.
An Around the World in Eighty Days au.
At the Drop of a Veil by @seekthemist
Fic | Damen /Laurent | 19.1k
The Battle of Marlas could have brought the relationship between Vere and Akielos to a breaking point, but it didn't. As the peace treaty is finally signed, King Aleron has a very clear idea of how to ensure the agreement is truly felt.
"Since the formal establishment of Vere and Akielos as independent reigns, there had been twelve peace treaties. The Peace of Marlas, signed by King Aleron and Theomedes-Exalted before the beginning of autumn, would be the thirteenth.
The thirteenth peace would not go down in the history of the Kingdom as an abject failure. Not if Laurent could help it."
By the Waterfall by @captaindamianos
Art | Damen/Laurent | Digital
Laurent is the god of winter, Damen is the god of summer. They only ever overlap in spring and fall. Is their love story doomed forever?

I can’t tell you how much I love your omega Laurent au! Aghdjslsd protective Auguste and the way he gets along with Damen it’s evyethting!!! If you get a second can we maybe get another part?
The courtship never truly begins between the two, as Damianos has to leave not long after that, summoned home by his father.
And Laurent spends the next two weeks in a sullen mood for it.
Auguste weathers his temper, and feels guilty bliss when Laurent's heat comes and he gets a four day break from it.
He anticipates letters from Damianos, particularly ones addressed to Laurent, but as the months--the seasons--pass, nothing arrives. And Auguste feels vindicitive when Laurent becomes more closed off to anyone but pack.
-
Word of Damianos' engagement reaches them nearly a year later. Some omega named Jokaste. Laurent has turned eighteen and his attention back to his books, as though Damianos had never been part of their lives. Auguste equal parts loves and loathes it. He wants Laurent to be happy, but he doesn't want Laurent to have to leave with whatever alpha he becomes mated to.
If he ever mates an alpha. Auguste is looking into lower ranked Veretian betas who may be good matches for Laurent, should their father decide he need be married. Berenger seems promising.
Auguste is appropriately appalled when his father tells him he's invited Damianos to Arles for further talks on trade and taxes. Aleron does not agree with his attitude.
"You'll be ruling together. Best you learn to like him, Auguste. War will be on your doorstep otherwise."
He doesn't mention Laurent, because their father has never had much care for Laurent. Aleron barely views Laurent as his child, only the second pack omega. It makes Auguste's blood boil.
-
Laurent blinks when the knock comes, startled from his reading. Only Auguste and servants come directly to his rooms, and the servants keep to a schedule.
"Enter," he calls, setting the book aside.
Auguste enters, as he expected, and he has a pensive look upon his face. Laurent doesn't like when Auguste comes to him with that expression.
"Laurent." Auguste sits down beside him, and places his hand on Laurent's knee. "I have news, and you won't like it."
"Damianos is arriving within a fortnight. I'm aware." Laurent reaches for his book. "Mother told me."
Auguste doesn't speak for a long moment, so Laurent opens his book and returns to his reading.
Then fingers squeeze on his knee, and Auguste rises. "Come to me if you need me, little brother."
"There's no need, brother." Laurent flips his page. "I have moved passed that. I barely knew the man as it is, no point in moping over it a year later."
Auguste lingers, then nods and departs.
Laurent closes his eyes, and gives a heavy sigh.
Never again, he swears to himself.
-
Damianos' arrival is not delayed this time, and Laurent is free of his heat for the suppressant herbs Paschal has begun providing him.
His scent is dulled and his heat delayed to only twice a year. It has kept the alphas away, mostly. Lazar is still not permitted near him during his heat.
Laurent meets Damianos' dark gaze with a cool one of his own, unbothered with his return. And uninterested. "It's a pleasure to have you back with us, Prince Damianos," he says, as is expected of him. He pointedly ignores the offer to shake his hand by letting his own remain behind his back.
Normally Auguste would scold him so their father didn't have to, but he doesn't, so Aleron does it for him. "I apologize for Laurent's behavior. He's grown unpleasant with most alphas of the court. It isn't a personal slight, I assure you."
Except it is, and they all know it.
-
Laurent is expected to play host along side Auguste now, and he does, poorly. He walks purposefully, speaks only when spoken to, and offers little in the way of courtesy where Damianos is concerned.
Auguste isn't surprised by this and doesn't apologize for his actions. For his part, Damianos can hardly hold his eyes with Laurent's. It's suspicious, almost apologetic in a very alpha way, but he doesn't let it concern him. Laurent is passed the way of apology into cool indifference.
Aleron would have been better to set Laurent loose with the bastard son than with the heir.
-
Aleron's grown weary of Laurent, and as Auguste predicted, is looking to marry him off.
With Damianos now preoccupied with matters of state, Auguste sees about settling a match between Laurent and Berenger, with Jord as their chaperone.
Berenger is an agreeable sort, and he and Laurent have many shared interests. Even if there cannot be love, there can be friendship between them. Laurent would not be far from Arles either.
-
Damen can see them from his rooms, walking the gardens with a step between them and a guard trailing behind. Veretian courtship.
He hasn't met the man by Laurent's side, but he can tell he is no alpha. It's in the set of his shoulders, the strides he takes.
Whatever Laurent is doing with a beta is beyond him. An omega would never last with a beta, to starve of alpha hormones through their heat and have a more difficult time concieving.
But he can see them smiling as they talk, and hear a hint of Laurent's laughter through the closed windows.
He'd never gotten the chance to make Laurent laugh. He'd never gotten the chance have him close, to make him smile, to learn his interests. He'd never gotten the chance to have Laurent alone like that either, chaperoned or otherwise.
He'd been called away to meet his chosen queen.

Damen x Laurent x Jokaste, anyone?
Because I want it. I like this idea.
Damen's feelings for both Laurent and Jokaste are well-known, so I won't even mention them.
On the other hand, I feel like Laurent and Jokaste could grow to be very close, even if only platonically. They play well off each other.
It'd also be good for the baby, as he will eventually take the throne, to be around Damen and learn the ways of Akielon royalty, as well as being taught by Laurent how to navigate the twisty Veretian Court. The Artesian Court is, naturally, a combination of the two, and the baby must learn from the best.
Think of how incredibly this child could turn out being raised by Damen and Jokaste and Laurent. What a king he would be!
And what a lovely ship to have raised him!
