I have a certain fondness for characters that haunt the narrative, when their name causes multiple reactions in the individuals in the story as in the plot, their presence is their own absence.

Auguste like a ghost between Damen and Laurent.

Ashara Dayne and what the hell happened in that Harenhall tournament, with Elia Martel.

Gilbert's ghost not letting Serge move on with his life.

Lucy Gray in Snow's brain and her song in the games.

Lestat disturbing Louis and Armand in Paris.

and so many other characters who don't even have a line in the story but who have a horrible weight in the narrative.

obsessed with the fact that auguste loved laurent so much and took care of him so well and reassured him and built up his self esteem so solidly in the 13 years he was able to that it was just enough for laurent to be confident enough in himself to keep his head up while being alone against a man who hurt and belittled him constantly literally every day for seven years. something something love can't save you but it will help you through
