but YES. okay the damien and patrick overlap is kind of insane right. this "i like people" / "i don't identify as a person" / "if they don't want me with them i'll be above them" / "i've always wanted to be one" thing. tbs never follows all the way through on this but the reason damien is so compelling is that when you actually consider his power and how young he was when it manifested it's honestly almost incomprehensible that he can even muster up the fiction of a functional human being. he has never had an authentic human relationship in his life. and how can you expect him to when everything he has ever experienced is fake. it's too big to comprehend. with patrick, sfp does a super interesting take on telepathy being so all encompassing it overwrites your own identity. both of these characters have these cartoonish comic book powers taken very seriously about what their existence would actually mean for the people who have them and in turn the people around them. and of course these in your head invasive superpowers spit out very damaged very lonely very isolated people. robert has no idea what a person is, really, when he says "i like people." but he WANTS to and that's what's heartbreaking. patrick is a slightly more well adjusted definitely more well intentioned person and i love the epiphany that he has about his own personhood and his separation from other people that damien never got to have. because i think it's really only in relationship and in community that you can be your own person, and patrick's relationship with alison is how he takes the first step to getting there. the closest damien gets to that is with rose in some faraway place which. lol. he never quite gets it.

i also think the differences in how their powers function results in the different arcs they have even with similar underlying desires. patrick is so consumed by the thoughts of other people that he has no sense of self or solid identity on his own. damien on the other hand is so isolated in himself and his own desires because they are constantly being echoed back at him through his ability. he has no way of knowing the original wants of people outside himself. they practically have opposite ways of interacting with the world—an unwitting prioritization of others vs an unwitting (kind of) prioritization of the self—that nevertheless ends with them in remarkably similar mental spaces. both are crushingly lonely and desperately want to understand and be understood, but only one of them gets out.
