I think it's a common misconception that domesticating animals is somewhat like enslaving them. It really is more of a symbiotic relationship. No wild animal would have willingly put up with early humans if they didn't get something out of it. Wolves wouldn't have stayed with us and become dogs if they weren't getting food and safety out of it. Many large herbivores that are now domesticated could and would have easily trampled their early human captors or broken their enclosures open if they didn't have a reason to stay. Sometimes individual animals still do if we don't give them what they need.
The animals that have stayed with us for thousands of years have evolved to cooperate with us better. Dogs have additional facial muscles around their eyes that wolves lack in order to mimic human facial expressions. Sheep grow their wool perpetually while their wild counterparts don't because a bigger fleece means they're more likely to be allowed to breed and be kept around. Domestic dairy cows produce much more milk than wild bovine species and domestic hens lay more eggs. Do you know how energy costly producing eggs or milk is for an animal? It's pretty intense! They wouldn't be able to do that if we hadn't given them the food and safety from predators and the elements to.
And we really need to show these animals respect and gratitude for what they give us by taking excellent care of them. They gave up a lot to be with us, often including the means to take care of themselves in the wild. That's a huge reason why I'm not against using animal products, but I hate factory farming. They are still living, breathing creatures with needs and feelings. They deserve a comfortable life and, when the time comes, a humane death.

How To Balance Your Daytime and Nighttime Activities So That You Don't Burn Yourself Out More Than You Already Have
Dick had to give it to the kid, he'd somehow thought of everything. It was a little concerning, actually, but the kid had brushed off every attempt had probing for answers. Who trained him? If he was trained at all. ...had the kid gone into vigilantism alone? Oh, dear. THat's not good fro Dick's current worries.
Reading the file Danny had handed him, Dick had to wonder how long it had taken him to put together this cover story. Also, where he'd managed to get the equipment to do it. At a glance, the kid didn't seem to have much on him. Not even a phone!
He closed the folder and set it back down on the table. "Really?" he asked, "'Congratulations, it's a boy'?"
Danny's cheeks turned a bit red as his gaze shifted to the folder. "Well, yeah. You're stuck with me now until I can get you into good habits and a healthier schedule."
"That implies that you're planning on leaving."
Danny shrugged, all his confidence now fading away. Is this what he's really like? "Well, I mean, I'm sure you don't want me sticking around at all, let alone for a while."
Dick frowned and looked back at the black folder and the binder sitting on his coffee table. God, his apartment's a mess! He smiled at Danny. "My name's Richard, but everyone calls me 'Dick'. You can stay in the guest room."
Danny lit up like a fucking Christmas tree. "Really?"
"Yep. You went to all this work, it'd be a shame if it all went to waste."
The grin on Danny's face was more than worth the security risk that he now posed. "You won't regret it, Mr. Dick!"
Dick smiled back at him, "Please, drop the formalities. We're cousins, apparently."
Was he attached? No. He wouldn't allow himself to get attached. Sure, maybe he was letting this kid - he really needs to start calling him Danny - stay with him for a while, but he wasn't going to get attached. Getting attached meant losing him. Dick wasn't sure he'd be able to survive if he lost someone again.
...damn it.
***
First order of business, now that Danny was officially Dick's - why would he willingly go by that nickname? - ward/cousin, Danny was going to make sure he got some sleep. Today was Dick's day off, so Danny had sent him to his room to take a much needed nap. The man was basically dead on his feet and Danny would be damned if he let him wander around this mess of an apartment with blurry vision.
The second thing he did, once he was sure Dick was asleep, was start to clean up. The place was a stereotypical bachelor's pad, complete with questionable stains in the carpet, rips in the cushions, dishes piled up in the sink, and old take-out on every table and counter. Gross.
He made quick work of the old take-out by throwing it all away and hitting it with a very small and controlled ectoblast. He was so glad Dick had disposable gloves on hand.
The dishes were the next thing he handed. The water was cleaner than in Gotham, so he didn't worry about washing the dishes by hand when they all didn't fit in the dishwasher. He dried the ones he'd hand washed before putting them away. Dick had no organisation in his cupboards, so Danny fixed that, too.
The fridge and freezer weren't too bad. Sure, the dairy products had all expired and most of the food was freezer bitten, but none of it was moldy yet and the appliance itself was in perfect working order. He'd have to go shopping later.
Danny had never liked cleaning, but he'd had to when his parents refused to follow any OSHA laws or Lab Safety courses. So, when he found the cleaning supplies, he took a deep breath and began scrubbing the bathroom. It wasn't too bad, thank god, and was already fairly clean. It was quick and he was able to move on very quickly.
The counters, tables, walls, and tile and wooden floors were all easy to clean with a wet rag and a broom. He wasn't going to even try saving the rug because it looked well beyond the point of no return. The couch and chair cushions could be sticked up, but he didn't have a sewing needle and thread with him.
The last thing he did before taking his backpack into the room he'd been given was to write down a shopping list and leave it on the counter. It wasn't a lot, just food and some dishes and toiletries. He'd have to figure out with Dick a way to pay rent, too, but that was a later Danny problem. He'd tired himself out and was still running on pretty much empty. So, he allowed himself to fall asleep. He'd check on Dick when he woke up.

AITA: Beyond Evil Edition in Three Queries
aka, Han Juwon Experiences The Darkest Timeline of A Hallmark Channel Romantic Comedy
*wherein I asked myself where would Juwon go for help with his problems and the answer was, obviously an anonymous forum online that offers dubious advice)*
AITA for Having, Like, Standards?
I (M, 27) just moved from a large city to a small town and accepted a major downgrade in my job position for personal reasons. However, my new coworkers (M, range of ages) have made my life extremely difficult. I should clarify that I have OCD and general anxiety disorder, and I don’t feel comfortable sharing that with people, or sharing anything.
I tried to bring a positive attitude to my new life, but within the first 24 hours of my being here, I was violently dragged through reed fields, discovered the body of a total stranger, got sexually harassed by a serial killer (M, 40) from my workplace, and was made to endure a social outing with coworkers. Understandably, I acted out a little. AITA?
Update: no I will not elaborate. Just answer the question.
AITA for Creating A Toxic Work Environment Even Though There Were (Mostly) Good Intentions?
I (M, 27) recently made a series of occupational choices that seemed logical at the time but which I have since learned are not good for anyone.
Context, since you’re all so concerned about that: Essentially, I pseudo-framed a couple of people for tiny crimes with the intent of flushing out dangerous criminals (to the people who asked during my last query, I will not be sharing personal information)
In fairness, and to head off criticism from this unruly website, I should point out that one of these people recently assaulted me with dairy products. The other has been unprofessional at work, dispensing support and wisdom that borders on paternal (actual paternal, not my own—you know what, never mind) behavior. Both are very loyal to one of my coworkers (M, 40s) who I reasonably believed to be a serial killer. That belief has been derailed somewhat by the discovery that he is not, in fact, a serial killer.
This entire situation (his fault) has somehow led to an awkward series of workplace and butcher shop encounters in an insular and frankly criminal-ridden small town, as well as several HR-worthy situations that I cannot be held responsible for. Basements are essentially public spaces.
AITA?
AITA for Choosing To Side With My Country Boy Crush Over My Mean City Dad?
I (M, 27) have been going through it. My workplace romance with the man I originally believed to be a serial killer (M, 40) is suffering ever since we learned (through legal and necessary means) that my own father is responsible for multiple crimes connected to the aforementioned paramour. I’ve been reading comments and questions from my previous queries and I promise I took them to heart, and have found opportunities to 1.) let him put me in handcuffs, 2.) invest in fashionable outerwear, 3.) try to get framed for murder in his place (not feeling appreciated for my efforts here).
However, recent events have led to some strain in the relationship. So I’ve decided to go to hell for him. To be clear, since many of you seemed concerned about my “safety” and “sanity”—this is a perfectly reasonable course of action. However, it does involve betraying a verbally abusive parent in favor of a hot guy with great hair.
AITA?
Update: My boyfriend and dad are both in prison.

Looking through the notes on that "people are too used to wanton excess" post and it's just convincing me that a disproportionate number of tumblr users live in gated communities
Tumblr media
"You can't have meat and dairy every day" mf scurvy is making a comeback! Almost 1/4 of Canadians use foodbanks! I haven't looked up the info for the USA but seeing as the social safety net in the USA is worse than Canada it can't be any better. Who are you talking to?
"You can't have a new wardrobe/phone every year" no one would need that if the clothes and phones we have are good quality, made to last, and made to be fixable. This is a problem of production under capitalism not a problem of the habits of consumers. Also who tf is even doing that now and not getting by with worn-out things?
"You can't have same day delivery" ok this is an entirely different point, but do you seriously think that it's even an option for transportation and distribution to be the same under communism? That these systems won't be massively rationalized and made energy efficient? Like what are we even talking about here, what are you even advocating for?
"Fresh peaches" see above.
"You're not getting a new set of funko pops" I could go off about how communism means genuine participation in the running of society so that people have genuinely fulfilling and rewarding lives and don't need to look for validation and identity through consumption. But also. ??? Who is getting that many funko pops? Who is that attached to them? You're generalizing from a very niche sort of person.

last night, during the street outreach, we had a woman come up to us, incredibly agitated that the undercover footage we were showing of slaughterhouses and dairy, egg, and fishing industries was visible to children.
two of the activists had brought their healthy, intelligent, wonderfully well-adjusted vegan children, who have both previously seen the footage with their parents and asked questions and received honest answers.
and i approached her to ask her—if she cared so much about the welfare of children, as she claimed, why was she not boycotting these industries?
if you are against child labor in any real way, you WOULD boycott industries that require labor in slaughterhouses, meat-packing facilities, fisheries, egg farms, dairy farms, fur and wool farms.
because guess who makes up a significant portion of that labor? CHILDREN. illegally and legally both, depending on the state or regional laws.
i’ve seen it with my own eyes at slaughterhouses, up close—i’ve seen children no older than 12 made to haul the dead bodies of pigs, still bleeding. i’ve seen them working in those farms.
there are innumerable minors “employed”—or enslaved—to animal agriculture and the resultant slaughterhouses and meat-packing and chick-grinding and animal skinning. PTSD doesn’t even begin to cover what these children come home with. to say nothing of how unsafe these jobs are—would anyone like to look into how many injuries and outright limb amputations are caused by slaughterhouse work each year? cuz it sure isn’t zero.
do you think Big Meat insures their workers and pays for medical bills and a pension when these incidents occur? how much do you think they care about safety code violations? the USDA and ASPCA approved slaughterhouses i’ve seen in person are in violation of at least 40 codes, minimum.
and let’s talk about the field farming of the immense amount of food required to sustain the animals imprisoned within these industries—lest we forget, most of the world’s food and calories go to feed these animals, not us.
and guess who they rely on most to farm that animal feed.
these industries will ALWAYS find a way to use children for their labor, because it’s cheap and it’s easy. they will NEVER stop using child labor. ever. it doesn’t matter how many laws are “in place”—these places will always get away with it bc they literally cannot exist without extensive and wildly cheap labor. you cannot invent an animal agriculture that won’t find a way to silently exploit minors for cheap labor.
these businesses are at the top of the capitalist heap—it’s a business that, once again, cannot exist without human slavery on a large scale, with much of that burden resting on children and immigrants (particularly women, btw).
if you actually care even a little bit about child labor, really, one of the most effective things you can do is to boycott animal product industries.

The perfect picnic checklist
Planning the perfect picnic can turn a simple outdoor meal into a delightful experience. Whether you're setting up at a local park or in your backyard, here are some essential tips and items you’ll need to bring along to ensure your picnic is a success.
Tumblr media
Choose the right location
Selecting an ideal spot is the first step to a memorable picnic. Look for a place that offers both sun and shade, so you have options depending on the weather. Parks with picnic tables are great, but a scenic spot with a view or under a large tree can add a special touch to your outing. Make sure the area is not too crowded and has a flat surface for setting up your picnic spread.
Prepare your menu
Think about easy-to-transport and simple-to-serve foods. Sandwiches, wraps, and salads are classic choices that can be pre-made and are easy to handle. For something a bit more special, consider bringing a selection of cheeses, charcuterie, and fresh fruits. Don’t forget some sweet treats like cookies or a small cake to round off the meal.
What to pack
Here’s a checklist of essential items that will help make your picnic enjoyable and comfortable:
Picnic blanket. Choose a large, soft blanket that's also waterproof.
Portable cooler. To keep your drinks and perishable items cool.
Utensils and napkins. Include a knife for cheeses or spreads.
Plates and cups. Opt for reusable options to minimize waste.
Cutting board. Handy for cheeses, fruits, or preparing sandwiches.
Trash bags. Always leave the picnic spot as clean as or cleaner than you found it.
Sunscreen and insect repellent. To protect yourself from sunburns and bug bites.
First aid kit. Just in case of minor accidents or injuries.
Games or a frisbee. For some fun activities after eating.
Keeping things fresh
Pack foods in separate containers to keep ingredients fresh and prevent sogginess. Use ice packs in your cooler to maintain a cold environment for perishables like meats and dairy products. Beverages should be pre-chilled before placing them in the cooler for optimal coolness.
Safety First
Always check the weather before heading out and plan accordingly. If it's going to be sunny, a portable umbrella or a pop-up tent can provide extra shade. Be aware of any food allergies among your guests and prepare food safely to avoid cross-contamination.
With the right planning and preparation, picnics can provide a relaxing way to enjoy a meal in the great outdoors. Using this checklist, you’ll be sure to have everything you need for a perfect picnic. So, gather your friends or family, pack your picnic basket, and enjoy the beauty of nature combined with good food and great company.

Despite dairy being part of NZ’s economy (or possibly, because of it, this is the only mention of this scandal you’ll see.
CONTROVERSY OVER ‘CLIMATE CHANGE’ ADDITIVE BOVAER IN AUSTRALIAN BEEF SPARKS BOYCOTT CALLS
THE USE OF THE METHANE-REDUCING FEED ADDITIVE BOVAER TO CATTLE IN AUSTRALIA HAS IGNITED A HEATED DEBATE, WITH GROWING CALLS FOR A BOYCOTT OF BEEF PRODUCED USING THE ADDITIVE.
Critics are pointing to findings from a Japanese study that suggest potential negative impacts on male fertility, as well as skepticism over the safety assurances provided by its manufacturer.
Bovaer, developed by DSM-Firmenich, is marketed as a breakthrough solution to “reduce methane emissions from cattle” by up to 30%. However, a study by Japan’s Food Safety Commission raised concerns, reporting a reduction in testicular weight, sperm count, and sperm motility in animal trials involving the additive. These findings have fuelled criticism from politicians, farmers, and activists, who are questioning the safety of Bovaer for both animals and humans.
Former Australian MP Craig Kelly has been particularly vocal, sharing the Japanese study results and criticising retailers like Coles for stocking beef linked to Bovaer-fed cattle. Kelly also highlighted disclaimers from Bovaer’s manufacturer, which limits liability and provides no guarantees of the product’s safety or effectiveness.
