I hate this but I LOVE it
Because all of these years have built up to this, the culmination of the “Adam style” problem between Leo and Adam.
First season, Leo is shocked by Adam’s way of doing things but is so happy to have him back, he pretty much lets him do whatever. Things are so tentative that Leo just goes along with things, especially since he’s still processing that his best friend is even alive as well as his own perceived failures as a cop.
In the second season he is exasperated and frustrated by Adam’s refusal to involve him in his father drama, but out of fear he still largely lets it all go and defers to Adam until the showdown in the forest, where Adam arguably hits his lowest point in terms of the Adam style—and it horrifies Leo. Adam looks horrified himself by what he’s almost done, by what he’s forced Leo to do. All the same, considering it’s Roland-related, we know he’ll forgive Adam.
In the third season, Leo strays into trying the Adam style himself a bit in the investigation, but is largely able to justify his actions to himself and Esther in the name of saving Adam, and even involves Pia; it’s still to do with Roland, so Leo simultaneously feels a lot of guilt and no guilt about doing things Adam’s way, but maybe he also feels here like he doesn’t have the right to criticize Adam’s choices.
In the fourth season, he’s back in denial about Adam doing things on his own even as he knows Adam’s doing it, even as he knows Adam is keeping things from him, because everything that happened to Adam has made him feel guilty and tired—but he’s also getting weary of being left out, and the sense that Adam doesn’t trust him and maybe doesn’t reciprocate his care is wearing Leo down.
So in the fifth season, it’s mixed—we start with a terrible break between them at the lake, but after the little old lady’s car crash, Leo tries to adopt Adam’s style impulsively in a fit of righteous anger, with mixed results. However, by the end, there’s been a little peace made, because he’s realized that even if Adam does things his way, he does care about Leo and wants to protect him, so there’s an understanding.
Finally, in EdN, during a case that eventually involves his own team, we see that Leo has accepted Adam’s style, albeit within limits; he won’t let Adam turn off the camera during interrogation, but tacitly allows Adam to follow the suspect afterwards, and warns him of danger but doesn’t try to stop him doing things.
So here at the end of this season, we have a full circle moment, because Leo thought his friend was dead at the beginning and here Adam clearly is terrified that Leo could be dead he’s not allowed to be, I say so and as everyone’s been commenting, it’s Adam’s reckoning with his whole approach to things. Also, the irony has to be hitting him that it’s really only after Leo finally comes to terms with Adam’s way of doing things that it ends up hurting him in a potentially life threatening way. I bet between the events of now and next season, Adam is going over that case obsessively from start to finish (and Pia too, probably) trying to figure out what he could have done differently, if doing things Leo-style would have changed this outcome.
Because as people are noting, he’s never dealt with the possibility that Leo could be dead—in danger, sure, in FdG, and that’s where we see Adam get the closest to regretting his own methods, because of how they’ve influenced Leo’s. But all the same, even when Leo’s made it clear that Adam’s style of doing things has hurt him emotionally, it’s never been like this. It’s never been something that they can’t come back from. Leo has been Adam’s constant, a safe harbor, and now he has to consider whether his actions, his stubbornness about doing things “his way” and keeping people at an arm’s length, have effectively cost him the person he loves the most.
I think any “Adam style” analysis links up really effectively with the brilliant “he loves me, he loves me not” analysis by @justanotherprofessionalfangirl be sure to check it out!!!

It just kills me when writers create franchises where like 95% of the speaking roles are male, then get morally offended that all of the popular ships are gay. It’s like, what did they expect?

I love their sibling energy so much--it gives me so much more "chewing glass" feels thinking of next year's episode, because Pia looks at Leo like this older brother figure, who is sweet and kind and protective, and she's already going to be blaming herself for the team being in the bunker tunnel thing at all, and then Leo just...does what Leo does best. He takes care of his team, he puts them first when it counts. And his choice to protect her instead of himself both saves the team and hurts them terribly, because that's her leader, Esther's balance, Adam's conscience, and they all need him in different but important ways.

I love this so much. From Adam’s very first interaction with the larger team, we see that in Leo’s absence, Adam is fiercely protective of and loyal to him. From Adam’s reaction to his mother telling him that Leo has visited with his comatose father for years, we see how instinctive it is for him to stop what he’s doing to check on and look out for Leo. We can see all that, but not Leo.
Adam reassures Leo when he’s anxious and stands by him, but these could all be explained away by Leo’s insecurity as what a good partner and man would do. Unfortunately, Adam’s clearest moments of caring that Leo couldn’t brush off as something else are usually things that happen when he isn’t looking—and given the major trust issues they have during the bank robbery money kerfuffle (in deiner weld vielleicht, anyone?), it does make sense that going into FdG Leo would believe he’s the one who cares more, the one who’s more invested, but has made peace with the thought that Adam cares in his own way and probably still cares about him more than he does most things, so it’s all good.
So then when Leo goes rogue in the name of justice and moral law and starts imitating (kinda badly, bless him) Adam-style police work, he’s thrown by how worried Adam is, how Adam is following him and hovering over him and soothing him instead of it being the other way around, he sees how Adam gets between him and the rest of the world instead of Leo being the one having to defend Adam’s actions to everyone.
It’s something that continues in EdN—he looks a little startled whenever Adam shows he cares, because for all the trust in their partnership and relationship that’s grown back, for all the affection and respect they’ve shared, Leo’s always been afraid that he cares too much about someone who can turn off caring about him (which is hilarious to the audience and anyone else in the show, but sadly plausible to him) Because part of him’s been dreading the idea of Adam disappearing like he did before, and he hasn’t thought about whether Adam is afraid of losing him.
(It’s called character development, other shows take note)
Leos kleine "oh" Momente
Wenn irgendeiner auch nur laut hustet, komm ich da rein, verstanden?

Incident Reports from Under the Skin, part 4
Incident Report of BIG NIGHT OUT WITH THE LADS Money Laundering Takedown, written by Jiang Feng and edited by Li Han
Incident Information:
Fuck my life o’clock 6:15pm on January 10th, events recorded herein occurred at the Botanical Gardens bc sure why not and the Won My Heart Casino ok but props to their marketing guy
Responding Officer: Captain Du Cheng and Officer Jiang Feng
Reporting Party: Previously mentioned officers, also literally the subject of my last three therapy visits Shen Yi
Victim/Suspect Information:
Victim: capitalism and plants, I guess N/A
Suspect: Bad guys or whatever Several members of the Ji Gang, including their ringleader Ji Xie
Witness Information: kindergarteners on their field trip in the butterfly room blocking EVERYONE ELSE’S view of the butterflies— Multiple witnesses, albeit with limited memory capacity.
Also technically me, because I can see what’s happening…and they don’t have a clue
Narrative:
At approximately 5pm, Captain Du Cheng my buddy, my pal, my best friend, who needs to remember that when he reads this report received a lead about a possible money laundering scheme planned by local horticulturalist Ji Xie you could say he PLANT it ahaha who has been vocally bitter about being underpaid for his work at Bejiang Botanical Gardens. Captain Cheng chose to go interview Ji himself, and brought Shen Yi and Jiang Feng my gardens are flourishing in animal crossing so I’m basically on Ji Xie’s level to the interview this evening.
Officer Jiang in particular seemed confident that this interview would be easy peasy, bc plant nerd relatively safe, and that it would be fine for Shen Yi to be present how was I to know things would be neither easy nor peasy despite multiple concerns about Ji’s connections to gangs oh sure NOW you tell me.
During the course of the extended interview, Shen Yi became unexpectedly drowsy bitch never sleeps, plus they were playing like some chill enya music or something over the waterfall and was taken to the car to rest meanwhile some of us had to deal with what I’m 90% sure was poison ivy for the remainder of the interview.
Note for the record that in escorting Shen Yi back to the car tbh had forgotten my bag of jelly beans in the front seat, Officer Jiang left the windows of the car open and the car itself running in the lot look I read this awful article about pets being left in hot cars and when Ji excused himself from the interview to use the restroom, he left through some Doctor Strange bullshit an unseen back door and stole the vehicle with Shen Yi asleep in the backseat, making him effectively a gang leader’s hostage not my fault he’s got main character energy.
Once Captain Cheng determined that Shen Yi had been abducted and taken to the casino, he roared like a mama bear at ME, when I didn’t do ANYTHING reprimanded Officer Jiang on his failure to follow protocol oh like there’s protocol about having a cat for a forensic artist and immediately hotwired commandeered a car, which is seriously the coolest not recommended by the handbook wow a nerd AND a narc huh.
He and Jiang Feng entered the casino we totally looked like those guys in that scene from Goblin and confronted Ji Xie and his men. Once Shen Yi had been recovered safely and Captain Cheng deemed him unharmed yeah I’m fine too if anyone’s interested, Ji and his gang were taken into custody and Jiang Feng read them their rights I made sooo many botany puns during it they asked to go to jail lol
Du Cheng decided to take Shen Yi home oh I’m sure and Jiang Feng returned to the office, where he was congratulated on his hard work you threw a stapler at my HEAD and the proper paperwork was filed.
Property/Evidence:
Monet Waterlilies tote bag from the gift shop
A round of shots at the casino bar after the arrest
Contraband items
Notes:
Jiang Feng received a citation for leaving a coworker in an unsafe situation and a commendation for his role in rescuing the coworker.
Due to personal reasons, I will be changing Shen Yi’s ringtone to the refrain from Taylor Swift’s “Anti-Hero”
