Undersea sensors off the coast of northern Norway that are able to collect data about passing submarines, among other things, have been knocked out, the country’s state-operated Institute of Marine Research, or IMR, has revealed. The cause of the damage is unknown, but the cables linking the sensor nodes to control stations ashore are said to have been cut and then disappeared. This has raised suspicions about deliberate sabotage, possibly carried out by the Russian government, which definitely has the means to do so.
The IMR, one of the biggest marine research institutes in Europe, described “extensive damage” to the outer areas of the Lofoten-Vesterålen (LoVe) Ocean Observatory, putting the system offline. LoVe, which was only declared fully operational in August 2020, consists of a network of underwater cables and sensors located on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, an area of strategic interest for both Norway and Russia.
Norway’s military and the country’s national Police Security Service are reportedly investigating what happened to the research surveillance system. LoVe’s stated purpose is to use its sensors to monitor the effects of climate change, methane emissions, and fish stocks, providing scientists with a live feed of imagery, sound, and other data.
Of course, the system also monitors submarine activity in the area, so will immediately be of interest to the Russian Navy, in particular. Indeed, data gathered by its sensors is first sent to the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment, also known by its Norwegian acronym FFI, before being handed over to the IMR for further study. “FFI is believed to routinely remove traces of any submarine activity in the area before turning over the observatory’s data to IMR so that it only contains fishing, currents, and climate information,” according to a report from Norway’s News in English website.
Based on reports in the Dagens Næringsliv, the LoVe observatory has been affected by interference since at least April, when the connection between the sensor network and the control station at Hovden on the northern island of Langøya was lost. An unmanned submarine subsequently traced the cause of the breakdown to one of the underwater surveillance platforms, Node 2, which had been dragged away from its normal location with its connecting cable severed and removed.
Rogne told Dagens Næringsliv that the size and weight of the cable running between Nodes 2 and 3 was so great it would have required something with considerable power to have severed it.
IMR’s Øystein Brun told the same newspaper that the institute was now assessing whether the cables were cut deliberately, but suggested that seems the most likely explanation since the crew of a vessel should have noticed if they had accidentally become entangled with them and would likely have reported it.
It’s also unclear what has happened to the missing cable, around 9.5 tons in all, which has not been recovered.

Daily Wrap Up January 24-25, 2023
Under the cut:
The United States said on Wednesday it would supply Ukraine with 31 of its most advanced battle tanks after Germany broke a taboo with a similar announcement, moves hailed by Kyiv as a potential turning point in its battle to repel Russia's invasion. The U.S. decision to deliver M1 Abrams tanks helped break a diplomatic logjam with Germany over how to best to help Kyiv in its war with Russia, which hours earlier had condemned Berlin's decision to provide Leopard 2 tanks as a dangerous provocation.
Norway plans to send Leopard 2A4 to Ukraine, Norwegian Defense Minister Bjorn Arild Gram said on Jan. 25. He didn’t specify the number of tanks Norway would send to Ukraine, but Norwegian newspaper Dagens Næringsliv wrote on Jan. 24 that Norway is considering sending eight out of the 36 Leopard 2A4 tanks it currently has.
Two Ukrainian soldiers fighting in the eastern city of Bakhmut said Wednesday that they feared an attempted encirclement of the city by Russian forces, though they did not expect a dramatic change in the coming days. “The situation in the city is very alarming, but we keep fighting,” one soldier, whom CNN is not identifying for security reasons, said.
The Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has called on allies in possession of German-made Leopard 2 tanks to send “as many of them as possible” now that Germany has said it will give Kyiv tanks from Berlin’s own inventory and approve their re-export from other countries to Ukraine. Pledges made by at least five countries mean the Ukrainian military is in line to receive dozens of the tanks. (There is a breakdown of which country has pledged what in this story.)
The Ukrainian military withdrew from the salt-mining town of Soledar “to save the lives of the personnel,” Serhiy Cherevatyi, a spokesman for Ukraine's Eastern Military Command, said on Jan. 25.

The U.S. decision to deliver M1 Abrams tanks helped break a diplomatic logjam with Germany over how to best to help Kyiv in its war with Russia, which hours earlier had condemned Berlin's decision to provide Leopard 2 tanks as a dangerous provocation.
Washington had been wary of the idea of deploying the difficult-to-maintain Abrams but had to change tack to persuade Germany to send its more easily operated Leopard 2 tanks - the workhorse of NATO armies across Europe - to Ukraine.
President Joe Biden announced the U.S. decision in remarks at the White House, saying the tanks were needed to help the Ukrainians "improve their ability to maneuver in open terrain."
Biden thanked Germany for its move and listed further military hardware that NATO allies and other European countries were supplying. "Germany has really stepped up," he said.
"The expectation on the part of Russia is we’re going to break up,” Biden said of the United States and European allies. “But we are fully, totally and thoroughly united.”
Kyiv has been calling for months for Western main battle tanks that would give its forces greater firepower, protection and mobility to break through long-static front lines and potentially reclaim occupied territory in the east and south.
Senior Biden administration officials said it would take some months for the Abrams to be delivered and described the move as providing for Ukraine's long-term defence.
"There is no offensive threat to Russia (itself)," Biden said. Moscow increasingly casts the war as a perilous face-off between Russia and the U.S.-led NATO alliance.”-via Reuters

Norway said on Jan. 5 that it had already sent 10,000 ammunition shells to Ukraine. The Norwegian Defense Ministry said in a statement on Jan. 4 that donated artillery shells can be used in the M109 howitzers that Norway has donated in the past.
Germany confirmed on Jan. 25 that it would send 14 Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine and allow other countries, such as Norway, to send their own Leopards to Kyiv.
The long-awaited tanks will be delivered from the stocks of the German army, Chancellor Olaf Scholz told Bloomberg in an emailed statement.“This decision follows our well-known line of supporting Ukraine to the best of our ability,” Scholz said, as quoted by Bloomberg.

“The situation in the city is very alarming, but we keep fighting,” one soldier, whom CNN is not identifying for security reasons, said.
The unnamed soldier in Bakhmut, with whom CNN has been in constant contact for weeks, said that “there are intense street battles for every house in the east, northeast and southeast,” but said that, while the Russian threat continued to grow, he did not believe that the Russians were likely to make any significant progress in the coming days.
“This is very worrying for us, and for everyone who is sane, especially those who saw what happened to the people surrounded in Soledar. And we were there. And no one wants it to happen again," the soldier said. Ukraine’s deputy defense minister acknowledged that Russia is “intensifying their pressure” on the eastern city of Bakhmut.
“The enemy throws a significant number of personnel, weapons and military equipment into the battle, trying to break through our defense, suffers significant losses, but does not abandon its plans,” Hanna Maliar said on Telegram. “Now in Donbas, against their superiority in the number of soldiers and weapons, we have the advantage of professional military command and courage of soldiers.””-via CNN

An aide to Ukraine’s Presidential Administration Mykhailo Podolyak told CNN last week that Kyiv wanted “300 to 400 of these tanks,” which he said could, “sharply accelerate the tempo of the war and initiate the closing stages.”
CNN cannot confirm the total number of Leopard 2 tanks to be delivered, but pledges made by at least five countries mean the Ukrainian military is in line to receive dozens of the tanks.
It comes as the United States said it will send 31 of its M1 Abrams to Ukraine, President Joe Biden announced on Wednesday. The UK also previously announced it will send 14 of their Challenger 2 tanks.
Here’s a look at what countries have pledged so far:
Germany: Berlin has said it will provide 14 Leopard 2 tanks, which it described as “a first step."
Poland: A top foreign policy adviser to the Polish President has told CNN that Warsaw wanted to send “one company” of tanks. Marcin Przydacz, Head of the President’s International Policy Bureau, would not specify exactly how many tanks Poland intended to send but said that a company of tanks was usually made up of “between 10 and 14 Leopard 2 vehicles.”
The Netherlands: Prime Minister Mark Rutte told CNN affiliate RTL News on Wednesday that his government would “seriously consider” purchasing the 18 Leopard 2 tanks it leases from Germany and sending them to Ukraine. The Netherlands doesn’t own any of the tanks.
Norway: Two Oslo-based newspapers reported on Tuesday that the Norwegian government was considering whether to send some of its Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, according to Reuters. Dagens Naeringsliv reported that Norway might contribute between 4 and 8 of the country’s 36 Leopard 2 tanks. The Norwegian defense minister told CNN: “We do not wish to comment on these deliberations or any ongoing or future contributions.”
Spain: Defense Minister Margarita Robles has said Madrid is willing to send some of its Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, Spanish state news agency EFE reported Wednesday. However Robles said it was not immediately possible to determine how many of the tanks might be sent.
Portugal: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said last week that Portugal was among the countries “willing to provide” tanks to Ukraine. On Friday, the Portuguese Minister of Defense reiterated to Western officials at a meeting in Ramstein, Germany, Portugal’s “offer of training in this typology of fighting vehicle, and expressed the Portuguese government’s willingness to identify, in coordination with its partners, ways of endowing Ukraine with this capacity.””-via CNN

“The Ukrainian military withdrew from the salt-mining town of Soledar “to save the lives of the personnel,” Serhiy Cherevatyi, a spokesman for Ukraine's Eastern Military Command, said on Jan. 25
This is the first time Ukraine has confirmed its withdrawal from the town, located in Donetsk Oblast, ten kilomteres north of the embattled city of Bakhmut. While Russia had claimed complete victory in Soledar by Jan. 13, Ukraine repeatedly said that fighting still raged in the town.
In a commentary to Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne, Cherevatyi said that Ukraine was able to exhaust Russian troops, making it more difficult for them to continue its offensive in the Bakhmut sector.
There was no encirclement or capture of Ukrainian troops before the withdrawal from Soledar, according to Cherevaty.
“They completed the main task,” Cherevaty told Suspilne, adding that Ukrainain forces remained outside the outskirts of Soledar, strengthening defensive lines.
Neither the General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces nor Ukrainian officials have made a statement about the loss of Soledar yet.
Earlier, the Kyiv Independent’s sources in the military, as well as international monitors, all fully agreed Ukraine no longer controls the town.
Russia’s capture of Soledar is its first tangible success since its last victory in early July, when it seized the Ukrainain stronghold of Lysychansk in the mostly occupied Luhansk Oblast.”-via Kyiv Independent

Nearly four out of ten have a more negative view of the Royal Family
The vast majority of them state Princess Märtha Louise, Durek Verrett and the case related to Marius Borg Høiby as the reason. At the same time, support for the monarchy is falling.
Tumblr media
Foto: Terje Haugnes / NRK
- Norwegians still give the Royal House a solid chance, but not unconditionally, says commentator Eva Grinde in Dagens Næringsliv (DN) when she sees the figures in NRK's survey.
In a recent poll conducted by Norstat for NRK, the message from the people is clear:
36 per cent say they have gained a more negative view of the Royal Family.
Only 5 per cent say that they have gained a more positive view, while 55 per cent have an unchanged view of the Royal House.
For comparison, NRK asked the same question two years ago. It had just become known that several organisations had broken off their collaboration with Princess Märtha Louise, and Durek Verrett's statements that a medallion had helped him recover from corona had caused strong reactions.
At the time, 17 per cent answered that they had gained a more negative view of the Royal House. Now, more than twice as many say the same.
- Cannot be avoided
Of those who have now answered that they have gained a more negative view, most justify it with Princess Märtha Louise, Durek Verrett and/or Marius Borg Høiby.
- That behavior in the marginal zones affects the perception of the entire institution is completely natural. It cannot be avoided when the institution is also a family, says Grinde.
Princess Märtha Louise and Durek Verrett have caused reactions several times in the past year.
There have been controversial statements about children being possessed by spirits. Wedding gin that is being investigated [if it] breaks the ban on alcohol advertising. [Photo rights] to a princess wedding sold to a British celebrity magazine.
Recently, the headlines have also been characterised by Marius Borg Høiby, who has been charged with bodily harm, damage and threats and is being investigated for several matters.
In a public written statement, Høiby himself admitted to the use of violence in alcohol and cocaine intoxication.
Far fewer Norwegians support the monarchy
In addition to the fact that many Norwegians have acquired a more negative view of the royal house, support for the monarchy as a form of government is also falling.
When King Harald and Queen Sonja were praised for being "good as hell as King and Queen" when they turned 80 in 2017, the monarchy had 81 per cent of the Norwegian people behind them.
Now, 68 per cent say they support the monarchy.
- A decrease of 13 percentage points since 2017 is significant. That should concern the royals, says Grinde.
- There is no automatic trust in the Norwegian people, but they have a very good starting point to land on their feet this time, too.
After the winter had been characterized by headlines about the King's illness in Malaysia and [slowly pulling back], the King was greeted by public celebration when he and the Queen went on a county tour in May this year.
Then, the survey showed that 73 per cent of Norwegians supported the monarchy. Now, three months later, support has fallen to 68 per cent.
The decline during the summer is significant.
Grinde nevertheless believed that the decline would have been bigger.
- The first thing I thought was: "Gosh, hasn't the support dropped more?" 68 per cent is solid support despite the rather ugly drama that has unfolded in the meantime. Could it be that commentators are not quite in step with the depth of the people, she wonders.
- At the same time: This is part of a trend that is going the wrong way for the Royal House.
– Fragile support
Grinde calls Norwegians pragmatic monarchists. This means that support for the monarchy is fragile, she believes.
- Many Norwegians support the monarchy despite being against random families inheriting power and position. But we say: "It works. It makes society stable." As long as the Royal Family is so good, we are willing to make an exception to the democratic principles. But as long as it is just that - good.
- It is not certain that, in the long run, Norwegians are willing to pay for a Royal Family that does not keep its part of the contract.
Despite lower support and a more negative view of the royal house, Grinde still does not believe that this need be the beginning of the end for the monarchy.
- No, but I wouldn't have breathed a sigh of relief if I were them either. Balancing an archaic institution with modern family life is an extreme sport.
The Palace does not wish to comment on this matter.
Translation and editing for clarity is done by me of an article by Vilde Helljesen and Kristi Marie Skrede for NRK, published on Aug. 25, 2024, at 18:47.
Note: The survey was conducted from 19–22 August with 1029 respondents.
Note from Saga: I had actually missed the whole "children possessed by spirits" thing. It's so-called advice from Durek about children who are seeking mental health help/help from psychiatrists. I can translate that article as well if people are curious.

Coming out as transgender at work
Tumblr media
Some days ago, Miriam Hardarson (38) posted a new profile picture and a long post on Linkedin. The introduction was: “This is not a costume. A costume is what I have been wearing for the 30+ years I have been presenting as a man."
Hardarson has been a department manager in the Norwegian IT consulting company Sopra Steria  for several years.
Coming out as trans at work
In an interview with the Norwegian newspaper Dagens Næringsliv  Hardarson  reports from the meeting with her boss, when she told him him about both the gender incongruence diagnosis and the medical treatment. - I sat in the boss's office and cried. I could not remember the last time I cried. The message I received was that "we will handle this". The treatment of gender incongruence  is both medical, social and emotional, Dagens Næringsliv points out. She has recently changed her legal gender to female, she has changed her email address and key card info. She has told all her colleagues and her network that she is now "100 percent Miriam".
- I have changed the fuel in the body, she says. - I have switched from testosterone to estrogen.
Internalized transphobia
- I have lived much of my life in pain and self-hatred, she says.
For a long time she  refused to admit that she was trans. The awakening was"a cruel process I do not wish for my worst enemy." - I struggled a lot with shame and overcoming my own internalized transphobia. You hate that part of yourself.
- Being trans is not painful, it is society that that causes the pain, she says. - We have been taught that being trans is shameful.
In the Linkedin post where she "came out of the closet", she describes some of the symptoms: - My “stone in the shoe” is gender incongruence. It has always been the elephant in my room that has forced me to flee from myself. That's why I have never recognized myself in the mirror, I have destroyed pictures of myself, had dreams where I was pregnant, felt very uncomfortable with my name, etc. In recent years it has become unbearable to live with such symptoms without doing something about it.
As she points out: The opposite of shame is pride.
She believes her positive work environment has been a success criterion for her having come this far. A company with diversity on the agenda can be a safe place to experiment, she believes.

Isn’t Tidal under investigation for data fraud? I believe it had to do with manipulating streaming numbers for Beyoncé and Kanye West.
I did a Search & yes, they are—in Norway. And it’s been going on for 2 years.
The accusations for fraud first surfaced in 2018, when a sleuthing reporter at Norwegian publication Dagens Næringsliv discovered streaming manipulation around two exclusive albums: Kanye West’s Life of Pablo and Beyoncé’s Lemonade. Dagens initially secured a TIDAL hard drive, then cross-matched that data against other sources, before declaring that streams for both albums had been grossly inflated. In total, the two albums were allegedly padded with more than 320 million ‘fake streams,’ according to the finding.
It was no accident that the scathing report emerged from Norway. Before it rebranded and was ultimately acquired by Jay-Z’s Project Panther Bidco Ltd., TIDAL was WiMP, a high-fidelity music service quietly building the streaming vanguard in Scandinavia. The post-acquired TIDAL kept the high-end aspects alive, but also wanted to broaden the appeal of TIDAL to a broader audience. Jay-Z also pledged to pay artists more fairly, in stark contrast to rivals like Spotify and YouTube.
“Dagens initially secured a TIDAL hard drive...”? Doesn’t that mean the reporter stole it or got it from a former employee who stole it? In the US, evidence illegally obtained cannot be submitted in court. But, I dunno. And weren’t both of those albums Tidal Exclusives? What “other sources” could have existed for comparison? Again, I dunno & don’t much care until actual criminal charges are made. <shrug>
However, this is the very reason I dislike streaming. The data is too easy to rig.

Hellige Kyr
Tumblr media
I Eggiwil i Sveits er Dagros den store helten
Sentrum er tettpakket med unge og gamle. De ivrigste har vært her i over to timer allerede.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Regnet uteble.

Music Streaming Service, Tidal, Accused of Faking Millions of Beyoncé and Kanye West Album Streams - CULTURE

Music Streaming Service, Tidal, Accused of Faking Millions of Beyoncé and Kanye West Album Streams
Tumblr media
Music streaming service Tidal, owned by Jay-Z parent company Project Panther Bidco, has been accused of intentionally falsifying streaming numbers for Beyoncé’s “Lemonade” and Kanye West’s “Life of Pablo” albums; consequently paying inflated royalties to the two megastars’ labels, at the expense of other artists.
In a report by Norwegian newspaper Dagens Næringsliv (via Music Business Worldwide), Tidal claimed that West’s album had been streamed 250 million times in its first 10 days of release in February of 2016, while claiming it had just 3 million subscribers—which would mean every subscriber played the album an average of eight times per day.
Tidal also claimed that Beyoncé’s album was streamed 306 million times in its first 15 days of release in April of 2016, which would average to nearly seven streams of the album a day per user.
Additionally, trusted music industry research firm Midia estimates that Tidal actually has only 1 million subscribers.
The investigative report in Dagens Næringsliv (DN) claimed it received an illicit hard drive of internal Tidal documents with logs of streams, containing ‘billions of rows of [data]: times and song titles, user IDs and country codes’.
DN claims the data on the hard drive matches company reports. DN says: ‘In the Life of Pablo month, February 2016, TIDAL customers supposedly listened to a total of 758,745,952 songs, according to the numbers on the hard drive. In the record company’s payment reports, the total is [also] 758,745,952 songs.’
DN contacted Tidal subscribers about logs of their play-records on Tidal. One woman in Washington D.C. was told Tidal logs showed she playedBeyoncé’s Lemonade album 180 times in 24 hours. When the publication asked her if it was possible for her to play tracks from Beyoncé’s “Lemonade” 180 times within 24 hours, she said it was not.
The newspaper also reached out to the Norwegian University of Science and Technology’s Center for Cyber and Information Security (CCIS) to back up its findings.
CCIS claims Tidal data shows various methods of manipulation used to boost play numbers. For Kanye West’s album The Life of Pablo (TLOP), the DN report accuses TIDAL of accessing genuine user accounts to play more than 150m ‘duplicates’ of TLOP tracks at exactly the same times: 2 a.m. and 5 a.m.
More than 1.3m subscriber accounts were reportedly subject to this alleged ‘manipulation’.
Tidal has refuted these claims.
“This is a smear campaign from a publication that once referred to our employee as an ‘Israeli Intelligence officer’ and our owner as a ‘crack dealer,’” Tidal responded in a statement to CBS News. “We expect nothing less from them than this ridiculous story, lies and falsehoods. The information was stolen and manipulated and we will fight these claims vigorously.”
Tidal is a subscription-based music streaming service that combines audio and high-definition music videos with exclusive content and special features on music. The service was maintained by the Scandinavian company Aspiro AB, but was acquired by Beyoncé’s husband, rapper Jay-Z, in 2015 and his company Project Panther Bidco.
Reps for Beyoncé, West, Sony and Universal either declined or have not immediately responded to any request for public comment.
