When you say that you're focusing in recent years on "writ[ing] the words we want in rules-text", and making the rules-text itself more-resonant... How much are you thinking about games like Netrunner and Doomtown, that are drenched in flavorful terminology? Which yes, some people do find a barrier... But it also captivates many potential players. For my current game-project, I'm going even further than those games, just leaning into the madness of theming all the verbs, the zone-names...

There is a threshold where the vocabulary strain becomes too much, but games can find a happy space where it's enough to add flavor, but not too much that players shut down.

A western type story/setting/game with 4 factions:

Cowboys, being what the setting is all about

Outlaws, being essentially "Evil" cowboys who do crime (E.G. a Highwayman, although highwaymen were post western times but with a similar style)

The Circus Front, being the towns entertainment, also a front for a dangerous cult

Americans, the natives or what popular media and uneducated people call "indians" who are just trying to protect their land

Each faction wants to defend themself with there possibly being a civilian main character who sees everything go down

Each faction also has a shaky allyship and a enemy with Americans shaky to Cowboys but Enemies with The Circus Front, Cowboys being shaky with Americans but enemies with outlaws, outlaws being shaky with the circus but enemies with the cowboys and the circus being shaky with the outlaws and enemies with the americans.

One of my favorite settings with one of my least favorite game systems. Something about the mechanics just didn't click for me at all just as Savage Worlds didn't click for me either. Not sure what it is but everybody has different tastes.

Now the setting is absolutely great. Influenced any wild west type game I've ever ran since. A brilliant mash up with western tropes, steampunk, horror and even some wuxia stuff mixed in. I was later a big fan of the Doomtown card game. Once I even ran the setting using the system from the CCG with a little beef added. Which made the action fast, the rules light and only needed a deck of cards.

Is Deadlands (1996) a horror game? I dunno, but it certainly uses enough orange in its trade dress to get a Halloween season post.

It uses the template set out by Shadowrun and dominant for many RPGs in the ‘90s — a single core book with a bunch of interesting classes, each governed by their own unique mechanics, let loose in an unusual world, in this case an alternate version of the mid-1800s. The core mechanics make use of dice, of course (which can explode), but the game also incorporates playing cards, poker chips and a good deal of card-playing nomenclature. Hucksters, my favorite class, use the arcane secrets of Hoyle’s Book of Games to cast spells, which is accomplished at the table by putting together a good poker hand. There are undead and demons trying to drown the world in fear and the Civil War is dragging on and California fell into the sea. There weren’t a ton of Weird West games in 1996, or maybe even any, so Deadlands cornered the market for a good long while (though in typical ‘90s fashion, its handling of both Native American affairs and the Civil War could be better). It’s also one of the first RPGs, along with Castle Falkenstein, that can easily be classified as Steampunk.

It remained pretty popular until publisher Pinnacle accidentally killed it (and itself) by making a D20 version of the game. That’s OK though; that surprising turn of events led to the development of Savage Worlds and, arguably, a superior version of Deadlands using that system, Deadlands: Reloaded.

Why is this tickling my noodle? WHY NORA? When qimir finds out sol is recording the twins he is going to be big mad, like going to snap mad.. also is cam non binary? I love how much yall love the ominous shit especially as we pull into Omen Station in Doomtown. There’s no way the meeting with Sol is ending any way but in tears, but I feel that responding to [Osha’s] abject despair with instant violence is perhaps how Qimir would have done like 3+ months ago, but not now. He’s in a def weird place where he compares himself and calls himself different than the other brawlers, but he’s willfully ignorant to the fact that he’s been the poster boy for more than a year. Dat sweet sweet cognitive dissonanceeeee

And yes! Cam Corderre my beloved athletics dept desk rider is nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns and they are based on oomf who dearly loves to yap ❤️
