First ever post on Tumblr and still struggling to figure out how it works but here goes. Charity shop dress that I'm embroidering to make into my very own DHMIS dress! Using the animated sequences in the Transport episode as reference cus the guys are too cute. Can't wait til I'm finished and can wear it EVERY SINGLE DAY.

When Name Brand is Worth the Hype
Tumblr media
As a hobby crafter who does projects for fun rather than for profit, one of my goals is to reduce the cost of materials.  This isn’t because I’m cheap (though I certainly have my moments!) or because I don’t care about creating a somehow inherently inferior item.
In fact, in many instances, I’ve found minimal overall differences between name-brand and off-brand supplies.
I take an economical approach to supplying-up for my projects.  Except there is one case where I absolutely cannot get over the significant difference in quality.
I will, absolutely, 100% of the time, shell out for DMC thread over off-brand.

Starting work on a birthday present for my brother. We loved watching the Animated Series together when we were younger. Our favorite episodes were, of course, the ones featuring the Clown Prince of Crime himself. Pretty happy with my chosen colors.

In a follow up to this post.
I had already discussed it a bit on my main blog, but it should go here, too, for consistency's sake. This will basically be c+p (though leaving out my silliness 😬. I try to maintain SOME semblance of professionalism, here).

This is comparing the stranded DMC color card: https://amzn.to/43Nw5yP
To the printed DMC color card: https://amzn.to/3OzTQFl

Right off the bat the blue/purple segments on the covers do not match. Another price raising feature is that there is embossing on the swatched book’s cover.
I do appreciate how they make it very obvious they’re different resources by the image of threads and font they used on each book.
Tumblr media
First quick glance and yeah the printed samples don’t match the swatched samples exactly. A lot of them are very close but then there’s like 3328.
Tumblr media
350 (I don't know why, but that number wants to be enormous if I don't add text to the line. I'm not a fan of the "new" post editor.)
Tumblr media
3801 and 666 all of which are more different to my eye in person than on the screen.
I think for the purposes of matching doll parts the $10 printed book would probably be fine and is a lot more accessible to collectors, but for IDing mystery threads and planning custom threadwork the $40 swatched book is a must. There’s just too much difference in some of the samples.

Had some leftover embroidery threads lying around and decided to take up embroidery as a new craft! I got this pattern off from Walmart and enjoyed making it!💕

This enchanting Starry Night Cat cross-stitch pattern combines the whimsical charm of a peacefully sleeping orange tabby cat with the iconic swirling starry sky reminiscent of Van Gogh's masterpiece. The curled-up cat rests atop a textured wave of blue and gold, blending seamlessly into the celestial scene, evoking a sense of tranquility and creativity. The warm tones of the cat contrast beautifully with the cool, deep blues and golden highlights of the night sky.

so glad i actually took the time to drop by the craft bookstore further up cuba. ive never really gone in there because its so gar up but it was well worth it. place is full with books i would love to buy/read and all their wool felt and embroidery thread/sewing thread is made by indie weavers/dyers/etc and their sashiko threads are actually imported from japan and they have kits for beginner, intermediate and etc to teach mending stitches and embroidery stitches. most importantly for me (looking to make luna lapin dolls) they have $25 sets of 10 diff wool felt/wool felt blend sheets that are like $15-20 than getting the one by one like i usually have to.

so idk if i have a full on hoarding problem but it's sure not looking good. my room is an actual mess and filled with so many things that i hardly touch anymore, but the thought of getting rid of them is hard. every time i clear some things out, it feels like more things manifest to take their place, and i'm stuck back at a whole mess that is in danger of growing.
recently i've admitted to myself that most of it is hobby things from hobbies i simply haven't taken part in for years. one of the biggest ones is cross stitch, which i did for years on end, but i actually have not touched any of it in nearly 2 years now...so i'm starting to destash and give away my supplies. some of my coworker friends and/or their spouses actively do cross stitch and are interested, so i've been cleaning my room to gather things for them. still, the thought of letting go of things i haven't used in over a year is painful. i want to be proud of myself for the little progress i'm making, but it's hard to be when i still see a mountain of things to move.
