Usually A Lot Of The Time I don't really like talking about Communal Happenings on my blog, but that recent exposé about a blogger irresponsibly using money given to them in good faith to buy en masse selfship commissions/merchandise has been making me think about the sort of hyper-competitive consumerist mindset that I think is a bigger problem in the selfship community as a whole.

While excessive collecting being treated as a symbol of status is a problem in just about any community that involves merchandise being sold in some way (may it be comics, DVDs, figurines, you name it), I feel like in the selfship community it's a lot more noticeable. Whenever the topic of merchandise of someone's F/Os comes up, it's treated as this sort of Rite of Passage, where absolutely everyone should have at least one piece of merchandise of their F/O, otherwise that for whatever means they aren't a Real lover of their F/O or their love for their F/O is considered less than, when that just isn't true.

There are a lot of factors as to why someone might not have merchandise of their F/Os: Maybe they're in a financially tight situation where spending money on luxuries comes rarely. Maybe they still live with family and are afraid of being judged for getting any. Maybe their F/O just doesn't have much, if any merchandise to begin with, or if they do, it's very expensive. Maybe their F/O does have merchandise, but it's not the usual repertoire of plushies and figurines that're often the mostly highly regarded merchandise. Maybe they're disabled and only get money through SSDI (or whatever your equivalent is if you live outside of the US) payments and can't afford to be spending it on non-essentials all the time. Maybe they live in countries where while they can get merchandise if they really wanted to, it's not a feasible option due to expensive international shipping costs. Or maybe (like in my case) they're in a living situation where they can't/aren't allowed to have a bank account (at least, not yet), meaning chances for them to spend money at all, much less by themselves, come rarely. They're all valid reasons and shouldn't be shamed for.

It's not the worst thing in the world to talk about F/O merchandise every now and then, but it becomes a problem if you start tying someone's worth to having it or treating it like a symbol of status or respect in the community. A lot of people just don't have the privilege to have these massive collections of gadgets and gizmos they can just slap their F/Os on, but hey, that's perfectly fine! That doesn't mean someone's love for their F/O isn't as valid or real. If the only merchandise you have of your F/O is just a T-shirt, then wear that shirt, dang it! It's the little things that matter.

AAAAAA HI MOXIE!!! OF COURSE i wanted to follow you for a while because I’ve seen you both on here and the selfship subreddit a lot but i was too shy to, so im super glad we’re mutuals now!

And OOUGUGHUFHUF I RARELY GET ASKS ABOUT MY F/OS ASIDE FROM A FRIEND OR TWO so absolutely!! Let’s see… in terms of the f/o I’ve selfshipper with the longest of all time I’d say it was either Donatello TMNT 2012 or Double D from Ed Edd n Eddy! Those both went on for about 5 years. But obviously i dropped them eventually because I outgrew them. And in terms of longest as of right *now*, i would say it’s probably Salad Fingers? Technically, because I have him down in my ancient ass and outdated f/o list as 2020/2021, so it’s either him or the f/os i picked up in 2021 (like Jurgen from Sam and Max or Ash from Superjail). I love all of them so much still, especially Ash, he was one of my first Superjail f/os

As for my newest one oouhhhh he’s such a sweetie, he’s the tin soldier from The Steadfast Tin Soldier short from Fantasia 2000!! Technically I guess I f/o all versions of him since the short is based on the fairy tale of the same name, but that version specifically appealed to me… long story short I’m objectum and have kind of a specific type and whatever it is, he’s that lol! I’ve drawn him here and there and am trying to study his shapes so I can draw him more accurately

A little PSA because people still don’t get nonsharers smh

I’m going to say it again: the concept of nonsharing really isn’t that hard to understand. Some people choose not to share their F/Os because it makes them uncomfortable and that’s valid. Why shame someone for being open about their boundaries? Would you rather they lie about how they feel and quietly suffer, just to keep others happy? It’s much healthier to let people exist within their comfort zones.

Now, how someone handles being a nonsharer is a separate issue. There’s a big difference between respectfully enforcing a boundary and acting out in toxic ways like spreading misinformation about doubles, making possessive or snide remarks, or encouraging mass blocking someone just because they share the same F/O. That kind of behavior is a problem, but it’s a problem with that person, not with the concept of nonsharing itself.

Being nonsharing should have never been seen as an issue to begin with. The real problem lies with those who abuse it and create unnecessary drama. I’ve met plenty of nonsharers who simply block, move on, and stay respectful. And I’ve also seen the kind of nonsharers who give the rest a bad name.

At the end of the day, hating an entire group for the actions of a few is frankly quite stupid and close minded. I fully support nonsharers and their reasons, but I will never support those who weaponize it to be cruel. There’s a difference between having boundaries and being a jerk.

Nonsharers are valid. Period. 😤🩷
