As an artist I have a deep seated hatred for the home decor section of big box stores (I mean I dislike the whole place but this section in particular grinds my gears).

Mass produced items from big box stores are anonymous and soulless. They lack a tangible connection to communities, whether local local or online that you identify with. They are made in the most exploitive way possible in order to bring it to you at the cheapest price they can while still maximizing their profits. This leads a trail of destruction and abuse from the conception of the item all the way through your door and later into a landfill when you toss it out because it only cost a couple dollars and no longer gives you a dopamine rush to look at.

Things made with care last longer, hold more value in our mind, and provide jobs that offer more flexibility and dignity to the people who do them. When the things are surround ourselves with are crafted by artisans, we supply jobs for people who might otherwise have to find employment in settings that don’t make the best use of their talents/interests/skills.

We can buy fewer cheaply made things, opting for higher quality and more locally produced when we can. We can take better care of the things we own and actively work against the impulse to buy shit to get a dopamine rush.

A good option for items we actually need is shopping secondhand. Yard sales, digital marketplaces, consignment and thrift stores can all lengthen the useable lifespan of items without needing something to be produced from scratch, and often enables us to buy higher quality items than we would be able to otherwise afford.
