Movie Review | Disturbia (Caruso, 2007)

I don’t think many people are eager to mount a defense of Shia Laboeuf these days for obvious reasons, and I don’t think many people really liked him back in the day either. But I do think this movie, released the same year as the first Transformers, which made 2007 the Summer of Shia, makes a solid case for him as an actor. It’s not so much that he’s a bad actor as that he happens to be good at playing annoying dipshits, a character type the movie gods decided we couldn’t get enough of when they started stuffing him down our throats.

It works out well enough here, as this movie is basically the dipshit version of Rear Window. I suspect the bit at the beginning with the dead dad was added later because test audiences probably found Shia’s character too annoying and unsympathetic. But his mind numbing boredom as he looks for ways to amuse himself under house arrest definitely takes me back to my summers as a teenager watching TV and playing video games for hours and not leaving the house. A little less plausible is how the total babe who lives next door decides to befriend him after he spies on her in the pool, but Sarah Roemer’s presence is a welcome contrast to Shia’s dipshittery.

I found it hard to grasp DJ Caruso’s reputation as a thriller director when watching his terrible Daily Wire movie Shut In (which among its many crimes, wastes Vincent Gallo), but found it easier to do so here. This is a pretty sturdy and nice looking thriller (the sheen definitely screams mid-2000s summer release in a not unwelcome way) that manages to couch its premise in the particulars of the hero’s circumstances and the era’s tech. Between the Xbox 360, the iTunes account and all the flip phone cameras, this is the most 2007 movie ever made. And it has an effectively creepy David Morse performance, who helps further offset the Shia dipshittery.

Redeeming Love (2022) 💩

Written by the christian Danielle Steele for a very narrow audience, this movie‘s only redeeming quality is the beautiful location (Cape Town) where DJ Caruso proceeds to piss away $30M. 

The source material is loosely based on the Bible story of Hosea and Gomer peppered with a generous dose of unnecessary graphic abuse that blindsides you into what essentially is an old testament torture movie, which makes it hard to even shitwatch.

15 years later, what has become of Prison Break star Wentworth Miller?

In 2005, the public discovered the character of Michael Scofield, a gifted engineer who gets himself locked up in Fox River Prison in order to get his brother Lincoln (Dominic Purcell) out. At the time, the public was charmed by the charisma of Michael's actor, Wentworth Miller , who was 33 years old when the first season was filmed.

The success was total, including in France, where the series was broadcast on M6 with the famous theme song sung by rapper Faf Larage, younger brother of Shurik'n from IAM. The show continued for 4 seasons and ended (temporarily) in 2009 with the TV movie La Dernière Évasion.

Miller, who had gotten his start on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and ER , had finally found a series of his own, but once it was over, he struck while the iron was hot. He was immediately seen in Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010), an episode of House , and a Karl Urban-led thriller, Vertigo .

Prison Break reunion in superhero series

But it is truly with the superhero series The Flash that the actor will bounce back. First simply hired to play the villain Leonard Snart aka Captain Cold opposite Barry Allen played by Grant Gustin , he returns at regular intervals in the series thanks to the public's enthusiasm for the actor and the sense of cool that he brings to his super-villain.

Two years later, he got a series of his own with other heroes from the "Arrowverse", called DC's Legends of Tomorrow , in which he reunited with his Prison Break sidekick Dominic Purcell . Present intermittently from 2016 to 2021 in the show, he still plays Captain Cold.

At the same time, Miller moved to the "other side" of the camera by writing the screenplays for Park Chan-wook's psychological thriller Stoker (2013) with Mia Wasikowska and Nicole Kidman and then (with DJ Caruso) for the horror thriller The Forgotten Room (2016).

Prison Break Season 5

Miller's less presence is because he left in 2017 to shoot a fifth season - many would say "one season too many" - of Prison Break. Poorly received, highly criticized, it left fans with a bitter taste, and the actor was content to appear in two episodes of New York - Special Unit and in DC's Legends, then disappeared from the screens for a while.

He is preparing his big comeback alongside his friend Dominic Purcell in Snatchback, a series adapted from a true story about a team of secret agents tasked with freeing hostages around the world. To be continued…

ALVIGNANO: VESPAGIRO, FERVONO I PREPARATIVI PER L'EVENTO

Edizione 2024 ricca di ospiti e di attrazioni collaterali. Il 18 maggio la conferenza con la presentazione del libro di Paola Scarsi

Tre giorni di “animazione popolare”, legati dalla passione della vespa e dei motori: musica, attrazioni, ospiti e gusto. Un’edizione (Raduno Nazionale e Tappa del Campionato Turistico Nazionale e Regionale), dedicata agli amanti delle due ruote e agli appassionati di un evento che si ripete ormai da 15 anni, organizzata – ancora una volta - grazie al dinamismo e alla tempra del Vespa Club di Alvignano e di quanti contribuiscono, ognuno a suo modo, ognuno come vorrà e se vorrà.

La macchina organizzativa del Vespagiro è in cammino e non si ferma, sta percorrendo la strada dei preparativi e dell’allestimento. Farà tappa in pieno centro di Alvignano (Piazza Notarpaoli), nelle sere dei giorni 31 maggio (venerdì) e 1 giugno (sabato), domenica 2 giugno invece di mattina. Nel pomeriggio la carovana di storiche e variopinte due ruote, dopo un fantastico giro sul nostro invidiabile territorio, si sposterà nell’accogliente e ‘immensa’ area pic-nic Rio delle Tavole di Caiazzo, dove si potrà pranzare e trascorrere la giornata ad oltranza, tutti insieme e in compagnia. Tanti ospiti e tanti eventi collaterali: parteciperanno la coinvolgente e appassionante Tsunami Band, la Jolly Blu per un tributo ai successi e agli intramontabili pezzi degli 883, il sorprendente e talentuoso Tony Figo, il freestyler italiano Nicola L’impennatore, Gegè di Eat Food Porn e dj Pandemonio Gianluca Manzieri. Madrina dell’edizione 2024 Alessia Caruso, Miss Eleganza Campania. Sul palco i presentatori Erennio De Vita e Federica Landolfi. 

Non mancheranno altre attrazioni e sorprese, punti ristoro, l’estrazione della lotteria e collaborazioni varie, che suggelleranno ancora di più l’apertura e l’accoglienza di un Club – quest’anno tra l’altro con Direttivo rinnovato – che ama circondarsi di persone sorridenti e solari, allegre e spensierate.

La tre giorni sarà anticipata da una conferenza stampa di presentazione: l’appuntamento sabato 18 maggio alle ore 17:30 presso la sede del Vespa Club di via Stazione di Alvignano, nell’occasione sarà presentato il libro "I Ricordi Imbattibili della Vespa: Storie e Emozioni Raccontate dai Veri Protagonisti", scritto da Paola Scarsi.
