We’ve bought a few different geode kits over the years and had a lot of fun cracking them open. Plus, you never know what you’re going to get. It’s a great experience. And now it comes in larger sizes: National Geographic’s Jumbo Geodes kit.
If you want more geodes at a smaller size, they’ve got that, too. Smaller ones make an excellent birthday party activity and then the kids can take their geodes home. Sparkly science FTW.

#that washing machine was more emotionally present in my childhood than my actual parents
"smart appliances" fuck u i want them dumb as a brick and incidentally as sturdy and enduring
#planned obsolescence is spreading like chlamydia in a nursing home into every part of our lives and you should be PISSED#anyway. buying things secondhand when you can (appliances but also clothes & furniture) is a great way to weed out#what has staying power and what was designed to break#plus it's great for your budget#please check out your local thrift store for blenders food processors mixers etc#if it's old ugly clunky but it works? then it is probably a TANK that will keep on working til kingdom come#kitchen appliances especially get donated bc people die/move and no one wants them because they are old/bulky#and they have low resale value bc advertising culture trains us to only want the new shiny stainless steel version#but if a blender has been alive and kicking since the 80s? baby i don't care about the aesthetic that is Grade A Family Heirloom material#trawl facebook marketplace/whatever for washers/dryers/ovens that work but people want to get rid in favor of the new and shiny#get comfortable with having things be a little scruffy and dated but functional and useful. your life will be so much easier and cheaper#also learning basic mending and furniture repair skills will save you a ton of money#never underestimate the power of a coat of spray paint or decorative contact paper#and it will allow you to personalize things in a fun and colorful way if you so choose!#it doesn't have to be perfect it just has to make your life easier and bring you a bit of joy in the process#tell corporations to go fuck themselves! learn diy#reject this crazy ideal that everything has to be replaced just bc it's a little dented and showing its age. that's wabi sabi baby!!!!!!!

DIY: Sparkling Rose Gummy Bears
Tumblr media
There is something so playful and nostalgic about gummy bears, one of the most classic candies out there. They're obviously a hit with kids, but why do they get to have all the fun? With ingredients like sparkling rosé and gelatin, you can make "grown-up" gummy bears in the comfort of your own kitchen. It even doubles as a sweet gift for Valentine's Day, anniversaries, or birthdays. This particular recipe yields 50 gummy bears, but you can easily multiply the ingredients to make enough for several people. (Well, if you don't eat them all first!)
Tumblr media
DIY: Sparkling Rose Gummy Bears
Things You'll Need
1/2 cup sparkling rosé
1/4 cup white sugar
1 1/2 tablespoons gelatin
Pink or red food coloring or 1/2 teaspoon rose grenadine syrup
2 gummy bear molds (yields 50 gummy bears)
Dropper
Tip
You can purchase silicone gummy bear molds on Amazon. If possible, buy a set that comes with a plastic dropper. Consider purchasing several molds if you need to make a large batch of gummy bears.
Tumblr media
Tip
Before starting, measure the gelatin and sugar, and set aside. You'll need to continuously stir the mixture, but taking a moment to pre-measure will save time and eliminate the need for pausing.
Meanwhile, store the molds in the freezer until you're ready to fill them up.
Step 1
Pour the rosé in a small saucepan and warm over low heat. Do not let it boil.
Add the sugar and gelatin. Gently whisk until both ingredients dissolve.
Step 2
Continue whisking for 3 minutes. Avoid vigorous stirring, as this can make the liquid frothy and bubbly. Gentle whisking is essential for clear, translucent gummy bears.
Step 3
Depending on your desired shade, add 1/2 teaspoon rose grenadine syrup, 1 drop red food coloring, or 1 to 3 drops pink food coloring. Mix well.
Tumblr media
Step 4
Using the dropper, carefully pipe the warm rosé mixture into the chilled gummy bear molds.
Step 5
Continue until the entire mold is filled. If the liquid begins to set, place the saucepan over very low heat.
Step 6
Place the molds in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours. Serve chilled, and store any leftover gummy bears in the refrigerator.
Tip
By the time you fill up the molds, the gelatin will create a sticky film in your saucepan. To clean it up, add a splash of boiling water and carefully wipe down with a paper towel. Repeat as necessary, and consider wearing rubber gloves to protect your fingers from the hot water.
To clean the dropper, prepare 1/4 cup of boiling water. Use the dropper to suck up some of the water, then release into the same cup. Repeat until the dropper completely clears up. Let the water cool, then strain or scoop out any gelatin pieces before tossing.
For an extra dose of sparkle, toss the gummy bears in white sugar just before eating.
Tumblr media
GIFT IDEA
To gift your homemade gummy bears, place them in a small mason jar or cellophane bag. Tie it off with a strand of printed ribbon, colorful twine, or yarn. Add a label reminding the lucky recipient to store leftover gummy bears in the refrigerator.
