#DANAHER
youtube
You've probably never heard of the corporation Danaher.
That's how they like it. It allows them to Reverse Robin Hood their way to profits gleaned from the world's poorest people.
But that ends today. We're shining a light on Danaher's business practices. And we're gonna keep shining that light--and make Danaher and their Very Private Executives famous--until they stop price-gouging the world's poorest countries for lifesaving TB diagnostics.

image ID: the destiel breaking news meme, but after cas says "i love you", dean replies:
cas, danaher corporation and it’s subsidiary company cepheid are still charging tuberculosis (TB) patients in low- and middle-income countries $10–$20 to access quick and accurate testing despite the fact that cepheid’s genexpert machine tests were developed with at least $252 million in taxpayer money and doctors without borders found out that the tests only cost $3–$4.50 to produce. TB is a major cause of death and disability, not to mention that the inaccessibility of these tests leads to the spread of drug resistant TB around the globe.

Tuberculosis is curable, yet 1.6 million people die of tuberculosis every year while Danaher grossly overcharges for diagnostic tests for the people who can least afford it.

From TBFighters.org
Danaher - a large U.S. corporation - owns many smaller biotech companies, including Cepheid. Cepheid designs and manufactures diagnostic tests. Their TB GeneXpert test determines whether someone has tuberculosis and if the infection is drug resistant or not, enabling effective treatment.
Using the "printer ink" business model, Danaher sells the testing machines at a reasonable price, but WAAAY overcharges for the test cartridges themselves, especially the cartridges that show whether the type of TB someone has is likely to be drug-resistant, meaning that even when people can get a diagnosis, they may end up wasting valuable time on treatments that are less likely to be effective because they couldn't access the more advanced diagnostic cartridge, which, by the way, costs the SAME AMOUNT OF MONEY TO MANUFACTURER AS THE BASIC DIAGNOSTIC CARTRIDGE. Danaher is PURPOSELY price-gouging and it's costing thousands of lives a year.
But there's something we can do about it.
Contact Danaher and let them know to put #PeopleOverProfits and start selling their diagnostic cartridges for $5. It's #TimeFor5.

Watch John Green politely bully a pharmaceutical company part 12 or whatever number this is lol. Time to flood their inboxes again! Watch a grown man struggle to put on a hat yet somehow be intimidating. Truly a marvel.

Danaher has committed to selling their standard TB cartridges at a lower price, and not to earning any profit when selling TB cartridges to the poorest countries in the world.
This deal means hundreds of millions of dollars (literally) freed up to buy more tests, more medicine, and stronger healthcare delivery in the world's poorest communities.
It's not a complete win--Danaher is still charging way too much for other tests, including their test for extensively drug resistant tuberculosis. But oh my God, the fact that this happened in a week is truly extraordinary and a huge testament to 1. the power of nerdfighteria, and 2. the power of working in deep partnership with trusted allies, including Doctors without Borders, Partners in Health, and the Treatment Action Group.
Thanks to all who have been or will be part of the fight to end tuberculosis. This is nowhere near the end, but it's such an important step.

Hey all TB fighters has been pressuring Danaher(a publicly traded company) to lower the prices on its various tests for diseases. These tests make it possible to screen for diseases such as TB, HIV, Ebola, and many more. Unfortunately, they are extremely overpriced, which makes them very hard to access in lower income countries. A few months ago, TB fighters(and John Green) led an online campaign that successfully lowered the price of its MDR-TB test, but now they're pushing for the same thing on all of its tests. If you want to help, you can sign the petition below(also linked a video explaining why it'll work).

Time for $5, Baby
Tumblr media
Listen to the angry goose. Tell Danaher that their GeneXpert test should be priced at $5 - a reasonable price that would help ensure millions of people receive fast test results for their needs.
Here's a handy dandy link for more info:
