Dental/gum care routine (update)
Brush with Sonicare toothbrush 2x a day
Use a toothpaste with fluoride and xylitol
Use woven floss 2x a day
Supplement with D3/K2 and magnesium. Vitamin C, CoQ10 and omega-3 are great for gums.
Drink a lot of water daily (2-3 L).
Nasal breathe
Drink matcha instead of coffee/acidic and dehydrating drinks.
Limit sugar and follow an anti-inflammatory low glycemic diet. Sweet foods like low glycemic fruit and dark chocolate are fine and have health benefits (low in sugar, high in vitamin C and magnesium)
Eat foods that support oral health - veggies, cheese, chicken, fish, eggs, avocados, whole grains, nuts, and seeds
Do an oral microbiome test (I do these out of curiosity for fun). This is one reason why I avoid mouthwash.
Risewell n-hap and xylitol mints (not necessary but I like the taste).

🎄 I need all the energy I can get this time of year so I've been taking 3 Creatinine Monohydrate nutravita gummies daily! I love taking them for yoga because they work wonders increasing strength, improving performance, muscle recovery and also keep my mind sharp. I've always been a fan of creatine supplements because they have so many benefits for athletic performance and health. Studies have shown that creatinine boosts brain function, fights certain neurological diseases, improves exercise performance, and accelerates muscle growth.Plus they taste delicious - you can get them in blueberry, pineapple or strawberry. My favorite flavor is the pineapple.  I simply take 3 gummies daily and I'm set.
💚 I've also been taking Vitamin D3 K2 and Magnesium Glycinate! I take the Vitamin D3 K2 to help my body absorb and transport calcium. This is super important for your bones and teeth - rather than letting the calcium sit in your arteries and other soft tissues in your body. I take the Magnesium glycinate to help my body regulate nerve and muscle function, blood sugar levels and inflammation.
💚 I feel safe taking naturesaid and nutravita supplements because they're always manufactured, tested and bottled in a GMP certified factory. Plus they're vegan, gelatin free, sugar free, non-gmo and gluten-free. To learn more about all the benefits of taking these three supplements you can find them on Amazon.

Dental routine (healthy teeth)
As I said in a previous post, I used to have dental problems quite often, until I made some changes and had small areas of decay recalcify (I recently had a dental exam). These are changes most dentists won't tell you, but I paid a lot of money to see dentists who did share this information with me. Unfortunately for some people, brushing and flossing, as important as they are, are not enough on their own.
I do the following:
Brush with a high quality electric toothbrush (I use a Sonicare).
Use woven floss, gliding floss doesn't clean well (I use Boka).
Use a toothpaste with xylitol and fluoride or hydroxyapatite (I use Spry but I'm willing to experiment with other toothpastes).
Nasal breathing (I used to be a mouth breather which causes dry mouth and therefore a lot of dental and gum problems).
I consume foods that contain calcium and phosphorus and I supplement with D3/K2 and magnesium. Teeth need fat soluble vitamins and deficiencies in these can lead to decalcification.
I avoid mouthwash and use coconut oil instead (this step isn't necessary, I just like the coconut oil, but traditional mouthwash can kill the good bacteria in your mouth so I avoid that altogether).
I don't eat a lot of junk nor sugar. I still consume some sugar (fruits and dark chocolate and treats here and there) and I drink coffee everyday, yet these haven't negatively impacted my teeth (they did stain them but that's a cosmetic and not a health concern).
Steps 3-6 are steps that most dentists won't tell you about (at least mine didn't). But doing all of these steps really helped my teeth (6 isn't super necessary though). 1-2, 4 and 6 are great for gum health.
Definitely brush and floss and use fluoride toothpaste (I definitely do), but you need to address any airway disorders, dry mouth issues, and nutritional deficiencies as these can contribute to poor oral health no matter how hard you brush and floss.

Mental health tips
🌻DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL. TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT ANYTHING IN THIS POST BEFORE ACTING ON IT.
November 25, 2024
So, I’ve been dealing with clinical depression for about two years now. I’m not currently on medication, but I won’t rule it out if things get worse. A year ago, I met a retired older woman at church who is on medication. We’ve become close friends because of our mutual time spent in what she calls, “The Pit.” IYKYK.
As a progressive Christian, I feel the need to state that I’m progressive, it’s been frustrating trying to get support from the church. Although the people who know about my mental health issue are kind and express empathy, their advice has been lackluster. Not one could refer me to a trained therapist, but they can give me ten thousand referrals to dentists. Some offer quotes like, “Just give it to God.” or “Trust in God to give you the peace that passes all understanding.” Others, I suspect, think I’ve committed some sin that brought this on me. Thankfully, last summer, a friend from New Jersey introduced me to his cousin. She’s a Doctor of Pharmacy, who lives with depression and took medication. She is also a church member, who doesn’t assume my depression is a personal failing.
BTW: A mental health issue is NOT a personal failure or sin.
Because of the lack of support, I’ve made it my mission to do what I can for myself. Below are the things that have helped me to improve. When possible, I’ve provided one or more links to Pubmed.gov or other trustworthy sources that support the use of the tactic. You might already know to eat a diet high in unprocessed foods and to exercise, but below are things that might also help.
Massage – once a month, if affordable or free, if you have a partner or friend willing to do it
Warm bath or warm foot bath – 2 times a week for 20 minutes each; add Epsom salt and aromatherapy oils to make it a spa treatment
Forest bathing (being out in nature) – 20 minutes each day.
Sunlight (even in winter) – 30 minutes a day; bonus is that it helps a bit with hormone balance.
Get a therapist – If affordable, I highly recommend a therapist. Having someone who is empathetic, objective, and trained to deal with your issue is such a Godsend. My insurance covers therapy, but there are online options to find an affordable therapist, even if just for one session a month.
Calcium (Ca) – I don’t eat much dairy (gives me zits), so I take Now Red Mineral Algae calcium. To help calcium go where it’s needed and not end up in the blood vessels, I also take boron, D3 (2000 IU), and vitamin K2 as MK4 and MK7 (100 mcg). I take the calcium (and its supporting supplements) in divided doses of 500 mg of calcium two times a day for a total of 1000 mg of calcium. Strontium citrate also helps with calcium absorption; but the research I found said to take it two hours before or after taking calcium. A bonus from taking this calcium has been reduced menstrual cramps. Yay! Edited to add: Vitamin K is fat soluble; so take it with a meal that has some fat in it.
Magnesium (Mg) – I take the oxide form in divided doses with calcium for a total of 400 mg of magnesium a day. Bonus is that Mg keeps you regular 😊.
Vitamin T (touch) – hugs, hand holding, and other forms of caring touch help. Just 10 to 20 seconds of hugging can improve your mood.
Lower your histamine levels – This one is a bit weird. I started having sensitivity or negative reactions to many healthy foods I’ve eaten for years. These include avocado, tomato, citrus, fermented foods, chocolate (ugh! ☹) and more. Turns out I had developed a histamine intolerance. One of the ways to lower histamine is vitamin C, but I had to avoid citrus fruits. So, I take magnesium ascorbate powder from Source Naturals. The studies said 2000 mg of vitamin C lower histamine in the body. I take 2K twice a day (4000 mg total) .You might have to build up to that amount. Also, it took trial and error to figure out what kind of vitamin C worked for me. There’s also a diamine oxidase (DAO) supplement you can buy; it’s pricey, but I only take once in a while or when I eat out. Seriously, the extra vitamin C keeps my histamine levels closer to normal for less cost.
Undermethylation – Another oddity. Finding out about my histamine issues led me to learn about undermethylation and MTHFR. Because of this, I had to be careful of taking in too much folate (natural form in foods) or folic acid (synthetic form in enriched foods). Undermethylators, like myself, trap folate in the body instead of converting it to its active, methylated form. Because of this, that trapped folate lowers my serotonin level. Since I eat a high plant-based diet, I had to kick high folate foods out of my diet. When I have salads, it’s iceberg lettuce for me. I do still eat enough folate; I just stick closer to the 400 mcg levels. I do not react well to the methylated forms of B vitamins, like methyl folate or methyl B12. I take an adenosylcobalamin and hydroxocobalamin (combo) for B12 from the Seeking Health brand.
Salicylate intolerance – One more odd thing. I’m now sensitive to foods high in this compound, which increased my inflammation. I’ve also found out that I had low iron levels, which also increases inflammation. That inflammation might contribute to depression. I have reduced foods high in salicylate and added supplemental iron. Doing this has lowered my inflammation as shown on my recent C-reactive protein high sensitivity test. I also use the No-Fenol enzyme supplement by Houston Enzymes when I can't avoid eating moderate or high-salicylate foods. The Cleure brand has skin and hair care products that are salicylate-free.
Microbiome (gut bacteria) – There’s some evidence that eating probiotic foods is helpful in mood disorders. The problem for me is that fermented foods are very high in histamine. Taking the vitamin C has helped me to put a few ounces of foods like kefir, raw sauerkraut, kombucha, and yogurt back into my diet. I eat A2 kefir and yogurt (goat, sheep, and some A2-producing cows). And, of course, fiber is your microbiome’s BFF, especially soluble fiber from fruits and vegetables.
Self-talk – Learn to practice positive, compassionate self-talk. What you say to yourself about you and your world matters. No need to deny reality but refocus on what you have to be grateful for, speak hopeful words, watch, read, and do things that lift you up or make you laugh. And watch what you say to others; you never know what someone is going through.
Final tip: Remove from your life, if it’s safe to do that, anyone or anything that worsens your mental health and find better people and things to add. You’ll know who these people are because you’ve expressed your distress about how they mistreat you, but they refuse to change. Bid them adieu and love them from afar.
I hope you get the support you need and know that you are needed in this world. God bless! 🌻

When I realized my symptoms were due to MCAS, I did what any rational person would do—I went down a three-year rabbit hole of research, Googling like my life depended on it (because let’s be honest, it did). I bought over 100 natural mast cell stabilizers, turning my kitchen into something that looked like a pharmacy married a vitamin store. But after trying everything short of witchcraft, I found 16 winners that worked like magic.
Now, I can’t keep this treasure map to myself. If you’ve been dealing with mast cells that act like toddlers after too much candy, let me share what I’ve learned. Grab a comfy chair, maybe a snack (low histamine, of course), and let’s calm those cells down together.
The Best Natural Mast Cell Stabilizers for MCAS
Quick Disclaimer: Every stabilizer here is naturally derived. Why? Because synthetic supplements are like store-brand cereal—they look the part, but they’ll disappoint you. I’ve listed the best brands next to each title because quality matters. Can’t find them in your country? Don’t panic. Go for the next best plant-based version and hope your mast cells don’t file a complaint.
1. Raw Colostrum – Local Farmer
Think of raw colostrum as the MVP of immune health. Packed with proline-rich polypeptides (say that five times fast), it calms your mast cells, blocks inflammation, and strengthens your gut like a protein shake for your immune system. It’s also got immunoglobulins that hunt down bad guys (pathogens, not your annoying neighbor). If you’re wondering, “Where can I get this liquid gold?” check out my linked article or find a local farmer who isn’t stingy with their cows.
2. Bifidobacterium – Probiota Bifido
Bifidobacterium is your gut’s bouncer—keeping the riffraff (leaky gut) out while making the environment nice and cozy for your mast cells. It produces butyrate, which is basically a calming tea for your immune system. Bonus: It boosts Tregs (your immune system’s chill-out squad). If your gut’s been acting up, bifidobacterium might just be the probiotic BFF you need.
3. Magnesium – Aquamin by Nature's Answer
Magnesium is like the chill cousin who tells your mast cells, “Hey, relax, it’s not that serious.” It balances calcium levels to prevent overreactions and powers up your body’s antioxidants like glutathione, making sure oxidative stress doesn’t turn your immune system into a drama queen.
4. Vitamin D3/K2 – Sports Research
Mast cells love vitamin D3. It binds to their receptors and basically tells them to stop throwing tantrums. It also boosts your gut lining, detoxes your system, and keeps inflammation at bay. Think of it as sunshine in a bottle—but make sure it’s plant-derived because we’re keeping it classy here.
5. Fucoidan – Swanson Vitamins
Fucoidan, aka “seaweed sorcery,” calms mast cells by messing with their calcium levels. It also boosts your gut bacteria and helps Tregs (the immune system’s peacekeepers) do their thing. Plus, it’s fun to say: FOO-koi-dan.
6. Beta-Glucans – Pure Synergy
Beta-glucans are like emotional support carbs for your mast cells. They latch onto receptors, calm inflammation, and help your gut produce butyrate. Plus, they’re found in oats and mushrooms—so yes, breakfast can be medicine.
7. Acacia Senegal – Anthony’s
Acacia Senegal is like the fiber that could. It feeds your gut bacteria, strengthens your intestinal lining, and promotes anti-inflammatory vibes. Your mast cells will thank you for this one.
8. Apigenin – Swanson Vitamins
Apigenin is the monk of flavonoids, helping your mast cells find their Zen. It blocks inflammatory pathways, calms calcium influx, and boosts those all-important Tregs. It’s found in chamomile, celery, and parsley—so sip that tea and relax.
9. Bee Propolis – Eco Bee Farms
Bee propolis is like the honeybee’s secret weapon. Packed with phytonutrients, it calms mast cells, boosts your immune system, and even helps your gut flora flourish. It’s basically a superfood with a superhero cape.
10. Zinc – Triquetra
Zinc is the unsung hero of mast cell health. It regulates calcium, supports detox enzymes, and boosts Tregs. Combined with magnesium, it’s a dynamic duo for calming your immune system.
FAQ: Let’s Break It Down
Q: Are supplements the first step to overcoming MCAS? No way! First, kick those dietary triggers to the curb with an elimination diet. Supplements without diet changes are like trying to put out a fire with a squirt gun—ineffective and frustrating.
Q: What’s the best dosing strategy? Rotate your supplements like a playlist. Mast cells hate monotony. Overuse can lead to sensitivities, so mix it up for better results.
Q: What if I react to a supplement? If even “calming” supplements are causing chaos, your environment might be the culprit. Check for mold or mycotoxins—they’re the arch-nemesis of happy mast cells.
Conclusion: Supplements Are the Sidekick, Not the Hero
Mast cell stabilizers can work wonders, but lifestyle changes are your main weapon in this fight. Once you’ve got your diet and stress under control, these supplements can be the cherry on top of your healing sundae.
Got questions? Reach out—I’ve been there, and I’m here to help. Let’s kick MCAS to the curb together.

Top Supplements for Adults Over 50 to Boost Power and Stamina in Kettlebell Training
When you’re over 50 and dedicating yourself to serious Kettlebell training, the right supplements can be a game-changer. They help you maintain energy, recover faster, and keep pushing through those tough workouts. But not all supplements are created equal, and the key is knowing what works best for your body at this stage of life.
Let’s start with creatine monohydrate. This is a staple for anyone looking to boost power and stamina, and it’s backed by decades of research. Creatine helps your body produce ATP, the fuel your muscles need for those intense, explosive movements like swings and snatches. You can start with a loading phase of 20 grams a day for about a week, but many people just stick with a maintenance dose of 3-5 grams daily. The catch? Creatine can pull water into your muscles, so staying hydrated is non-negotiable.
Another great supplement for endurance is beta-alanine. This one helps buffer lactic acid in your muscles, so you can grind through longer sets without that burning fatigue setting in too soon. It’s perfect for those marathon Kettlebell complexes. You’ll want to take 2-5 grams a day. Some people feel a bit of tingling at first—don’t worry, it’s harmless and goes away over time.
Now, let’s talk about omega-3 fatty acids. These are essential for managing inflammation, which is key when you’re hitting the Kettlebells regularly. They also help keep your joints happy and support overall heart health. Aim for 1-3 grams of combined EPA and DHA daily. If you’re taking blood thinners, it’s worth checking with your doctor since omega-3s can have a mild blood-thinning effect.
For bone health and muscle function, vitamin D3 paired with K2 is a must. As you age, keeping your bones strong becomes crucial, especially with the dynamic movements Kettlebell training involves. Vitamin D helps with calcium absorption, while K2 makes sure the calcium goes to your bones, not your arteries. A dose of 2000-5000 IU of D3 and 100-200 mcg of K2 daily is a solid starting point.
Magnesium is another powerhouse, especially for recovery. It helps with muscle relaxation, reduces cramps, and improves sleep—an often overlooked aspect of recovery. You’ll want to take 300-400 mg daily, ideally as magnesium glycinate or citrate for better absorption. Just be careful, as high doses can cause some stomach upset.
If you need an extra boost in blood flow and endurance, L-citrulline is worth a look. It increases nitric oxide production, improving circulation and delivering more oxygen to your muscles. This is a game-changer for high-rep Kettlebell sets. Take 6-8 grams about 30 minutes before training.
Oh, and let’s not forget protein powder. Recovery and muscle maintenance hinge on getting enough protein, and a shake can make hitting your daily targets much easier. After a workout, 20-30 grams of a high-quality plant-based protein is ideal. You should aim for 1.2-1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight daily.
All these supplements are tools to help you thrive in your training. They’re not magic bells, but when used smartly and consistently, they can make a big difference. Remember, the foundation is always a balanced diet, quality sleep, and a well-structured training program. Supplements fill in the gaps and give you that extra edge to keep swinging, snatching, and pressing your way to better health.
