What’s the best actual play D&D game to introduce someone who is not necessarily interested in playing to the premise of the game? My mom wants a better understanding of what D&D is like, but since she’s not trying to learn how to play, I’m not looking for something that breaks down the core mechanics, more something that shows what it’s like in action in a non-overwhelming way. Bonus points if it’s self-contained, or at least can be understood without much background knowledge and enjoyed on its own merits (as opposed to “it’s not the greatest game to watch but it introduces a campaign that gets great eventually.”)

When it comes to d&d actual play stuff, I honestly...can't help but find myself actively disliking how produced everything is.

I don't mean the sets and minis and lighting, I fucking love that shit, but the level to which at this point it's basically trying to be like...a half scripted, half improvised radio play.

Look, if I wanted to experience a dramatic, thematically concise story, I would let someone actually write and edit the damn thing first. I'm not. I am here to experience 3-8 complete chucklefucks do shit like name a wizard after mexican food, wander around being complete losers, and then slowly develop characters, arcs, and stakes over time.

I enjoy goofs, but on top of that it's also basically fucking impossible for me to take a played-straight dramatic cold open on someone's Tiefling OC with a tortured secret past seriously. I am not going to care about someone's heartwarming halfling family dynamics. Who the fuck are you? Why should I care about you and your accent that almost but not quite works?

...but you hook me in with some shenanigans? Some fuckin malarkey? Then I will cry openly at whatever melodramatic shit you want.

...once you've earned it.
