Ahh...hm.
The thing is, writing meta actually does require a fair amount of writing skill, not just from the analysis side of it, but being able to put them together and phrase them in a way that will have some impact or persuasion and they do tend to get edited a lot for flow. I had to take an entire course on creative nonfiction and pass it to get my degree, thank you very much. And I am happy to write them and exercise my skills that way. I feel like some people forget that is writing, but it truly is.
(I actually ran a now-deleted SPN meta blog to pass Cyberliteracy lmao)
But I certainly do not put anywhere near the amount of effort into them as I do my fiction. Which is largely absent from my blog entirely these days. And I care so much about my fiction, and provides a very different insight into my writing.
The problem is, the only thing I really have that's finished and cohesive that I'm proud of and feel capable of sharing is the Technomancer short stories, and I still haven't figured out what to do with those. When I only had one, the idea was to sub it to mags/anthologies, but now I have a set of them, so that's kind of off the table.
So it feels weird to me, these days, to have people tell me I'm a good writer online because most you have not seen anything I have actually tried on in the medium I have spent most of my time honing most actively in...years, if ever. Especially when I know a lot of people aren't thinking of meta as writing.

Zappen’s Digital Rhetoric: Toward an Integrated Theory And the Benefits and Risks of Consuming Content Online
by: Mymar Denise B. Nellas
The consumption of online content is the lifeblood of the millennial. In this day and age, everything moves according to the direction of the rapidly changing flow of the digital world itself. In other words, we gear towards progress. But, the road to progress is a bumpy one. No one expects a casual ride to their destination. As such, this article aims to discuss the benefits and risks of consuming content online based on James P. Zappen’s article on the Digital Rhetoric: Toward an Integrated Society.
Strategies of Self-Expression and Collaboration. The strategies of persuasion based upon Aristotle’s notions of ethos, pathos, and logos motivate a call to action for both the speaker and listener. One concrete example would be the sparking of online debates, which people easily read through. In itself, reading through the perspectives of two parties on a given subject matter is beneficial. It broadens the reader’s knowledge on the matter as a whole, and trains them to detach themselves from personal biases. This eventually leads them to always consider being impartial in grasping the contents of both sides and their arguments before making their own judgement.
However, the risk of such content is the simplification and customization of information. The credibility of such claims raised by both sides can indeed be questionable. As cited in Zappen’s article, (Fogg, 2003) highlights that with the content being online, it can immediately be catapulted everywhere, spreading possible misinformation.
Characteristics, Affordances, Constraints. The basic characteristic of communication in digital media become somewhat of a double-edged sword. (Gurak, 2001), as cited in Zappen’s article, proves this by taking into consideration how the function of speed entails redundancy and repetition. Where reach does not necessarily include the benefits of gatekeeping, anonymity problematizes notions of authorship and ownership, and interactivity brings upon increased opportunities for intrusion upon personal privacy. All of these are risks, and yet we take them because they function not only as constraints, but also affordances and help in the transformation of the old rhetoric into the new digital rhetoric.
The Formation of Identities and Communities. With online content consumption being an essential aspect of everyday life, we cannot deny that it becomes a contributing factor to the formation of identities and communities.
It is important to note that the online realm is a platform that exists not just for persuasion, but also self-expression. The main benefit of this is that we acquire an avenue to explore ourselves as individuals and groups. This interaction between others and ourselves trigger the gears of identity formation.
However, it is also imperative to consider the environment in which we consume online content from, and be cautious about such, because the interactions which build-up to identity and group formation are not entirely of our own choosing (Turkle, 1995 as cited in Zappen’s article).
The online realm is vast and continuously expanding. Getting into groups or interactions with people you assume to possess shared interests with, is dangerous. The online identity of an individual is more often than not, a construct of someone’s ideal person, usually someone who they would want to be in real life, but cannot bring themselves to be so. In most cases, the identity of internet personas differ from the identity of the actual person behind the screen. Such is the risk of consuming content online.

Homework One: Starbucks
Starbucks has been on the coffee scene around the world since 1971. They have had a commitment to sustainability since their founding and their tie to delicious, classic coffee is what their customers internationally keep returning to.
The following include links to four countries' Starbucks pages:
Starbucks: United States
Starbucks: France
Starbucks: Japan
Starbucks: Brazil
After navigating though the United States webpage, I noticed that the general idea of this coffee shop is to be friendly and high-end, with a rich product to keep customers (specifically women, oddly enough) returning with smiles. They also make it known on the US webpage how environmentally conscious the company is - a hot topic in the political arena now with most American young people.
Clicking on each countries' "Share Instagram" images showcased actual people enjoying Starbucks coffee. In America, the photos weren't what I had expected. Mainly because there weren't any faces featured, instead they chose images of brightly nail polished hands holding Frappuccinos with bad photo filers. Brazil showcased instead employees smiling and showing off their uniform green aprons. They all seem in good spirits, and proud to represent Starbucks. Again, now what I had expected. I thought maybe they would have more young teens drinking coffee like in America.
Japan's overall website had a face lift compared to the other three - Much of the branding and header images on their webpage had been replaced with warmer images (it looks like they put an orange filter on all of their photographs!). Many of the buttons had also been replace with a well-manicured woman's hands politely handing out a gift card in traditional Japanese style. It seems to reflect their culture of manners and gentile attitudes when in the greater public.
Finally, France had the most elegant website. The branding changed slightly, similar to Japan adapting to the framework of Starbucks main webpage, and adapted a grayer complexion. They were the only country that featured, what I thought would be the standard, cute young 20-something ladies that took mirror photos and held Starbucks cups with cursive writing.
Looking over all these countries' webpages made me realize that even a company as big and international as Starbucks doesn't live up to the idea I had fixed in my mind. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised to see that not only Starbucks held its own over all continents - but they represent themselves in good light and respectably in all kinds of cultures.
