it's hilarious that a few days after i finished babel, i went to history class and our topic visited colonization, and my (white) professor said that teaching history within education is politicized and his example was how slavery and colonization are taught in most history classes as europe's invasion of other continents and enslavement of the native peoples there, thus racializing the issue of the slave trade. he asked why don't history classes focus on the fact slavery was a practice found in many cultures other than europe and that europeans also enslaved other europeans, which is a fair point... however he commented that "the version of history that's taught is a way for [european nations] to pay reparations i suppose" and it's an example how education distorts historical events through the lens of "modern politics".
and i'm sitting there like... colonization will always be tied to race. whether we like it or not, that period of history had forcibly tied race to colony, and we feel those effects to this day. that is why it's still important to talk about it. we breathe the consequences, live the consequences, and see the consequences of colony. we are products of a bloody, inequal, and unfair history that still poisons our lives today.
along the lecture, i interjected that any and all forms of colonization was bad and he claimed he could think of pax romana as one good form of colonization. the roman empire's golden age was only golden if you were roman, sir.
as an asian in academia studying outside her home country, i have to cosplay babel every day and i am already so tired. I've been missing my professors back home because they spoke against colony and oppression with fire and brimstone and passion and here they turn away from the blood empire or they see little wrong with it.
dark academia is aptly named because by god is it fucking dark here.

Sorry for periodically invading ur inbox and not shutting up but no voldemort au soooooo funny to me bc theyre equally evil but domesticated now. Evan midlife crisis is looking back on his years at hogwarts like “i used to psychologically torment my friends and fellow peers….so much potential wasted…”
Evan has a wife and kids but he pretty much ignores them in favor of periodically cheating with his favoritest specialest dearest boy <33 who now has a nepotism ministry position that is slowly sucking the life out of him (cannot decide if Barty would be married or not either way hes not happy)
nooo i love when you share these 😋😋
also, i have to admit cheaters rosekiller makes me feel things. they have the most heartbreaking, passionate, ruinous relationship, and no one knows about it. even better if they have a bit of an age gap.
like: evan is an unsatisfied-close-to-40 man who has a habit of sleeping with his barely twenty years old assistants because he believes the problem in his relationship with his wife is that he's no longer attracted to her because she isn't young and sexy anymore.
one day, exhausted, he leaves work. and, on the sidewalk on the other side of the street, he sees a young man leaning against the wall of a large building. and yes, that guy is 25 years old barty!!
he's smoking and when he notices evan staring at him, he smiles and exhales smoke. evan waves at him and nods and... yeah, that's pretty much how it starts.
evan spoils barty in every way, and daydreams about him constantly. and barty literally gasps and blushes every time he remembers that he has a boyfriend.
the fact that they have a family and a soon to be wife is just a detail 🙄

John Whitehouse at MMFA:
On July 9, Oklahoma’s superintendent of public instruction Ryan Walters announced that a number of people — many of them key figures in right-wing media — would be rewriting the social studies curriculum in the state.
The list includes right-wing hosts with ties to Walters like Steve Deace, Dennis Prager, and Stacy Washington. Also included is Kevin Roberts, the head of The Heritage Foundation, which has organized Project 2025.
Walters announced an “executive review committee” to revise Oklahoma’s social studies curriculum. Members include Dennis Prager, Robert Pondiscio, David Barton, Kevin Roberts, Everett Piper, John Dwyer, David Goodwin, Mark Bauerlein, Steve Deace, and Stacy Washington. [Oklahoma State Department of Education, 7/9/24]
After implementing a mandate that the state’s public schools teach the Bible, Walters claimed that right-wing commentator and pastor Jackson Lahmeyer, who has promised to “embrace Christian nationalism” and previously ran for U.S. Senate in Oklahoma, encouraged him to implement such a policy last year. [Media Matters, 7/8/24]
Walters has approved PragerU Kids — which is widely criticized for pushing right-wing propaganda, such as including distorted histories about slavery in its history lessons — as curriculum for Oklahoma public schools. In one supposedly educational video, for instance, a cartoon version of Fredrick Douglass describes slavery as a “compromise to achieve something great.” [MSNBC, 9/7/23; Media Matters, 9/8/23; NBC, 8/10/23]
Dennis Prager is an anti-LGBTQ pundit who has hosted The Dennis Prager Show since 1999. In 2009, he founded the conservative nonprofit organization PragerU, which publishes short videos on political and international issues.
David Barton is a pseudo-historian and Christian nationalist well-known for spreading the idea that the country was supposed to be a Christian nation. Barton is the founder of WallBuilders.
Kevin Roberts is the president of the Heritage Foundation, the right-wing think tank leading Project 2025.
Steve Deace is a host for BlazeTV who has made many anti-abortion and anti-LGBTQ remarks.
Stacy Washington is a commentator, radio host, and Air Force veteran who has appeared in many right-wing outlets. She was formerly a host of a program aired on American Family Radio, the radio arm of extreme anti-LGBTQ group American Family Association, before the network culled much of its programming and its dedicated Urban Family Communications network.
Right-wing indoctrination artist Oklahoma Superintendent of Public Schools Ryan Walters announced that he is having a team rewrite the state’s social studies curriculum, with many of its names right-wing media figures such as Everett Piper, serial history revisionist David Barton, indoctrination mill head Dennis Prager, and pundit Steve Deace.

Okay so, I don’t feel like it’s just me that’s made this observation but:
Ororo’s character has been in publication for like 50 years and writers haven’t given thought to what cultural practices/background she hails from other than just a specific geography. That’s CORNY.
Her mother’s from northwest Kenya, but what tribe is she? What are her cultural practices? Africa is a continent, Kenya is a country with multiple ethnic groups that have their own subsections of practices and beliefs. Does Ororo lean toward her mother’s native heritage or does she largely follow Egyptian culture because her formative years were spent on the streets of Cairo? Did she ever struggle with a disconnect between these regions when she went back to Kenya to be the Windrider? All questions I’m way more interested in having answered than whatever love triangles the X-Men have going on this week.

Like I'd say I miss English class bcos it was a dedicated space where theyd sit me down and I HAD to write a short story (or a personal essay but fuck thoseeeeeee) but also I notably despised English class. 'Lollll tumblr hated English class and now they have no reading comprehension' I wrote an essay about how the exam structures and emphasis on regurgitating templated answer stifles genuine understanding of the material and my pivotal metaphor was that of artificial intelligence as the platonic ideal of the student as it quickly recycles past information in textbook format and my teacher was like damn wow so true . And then a year later she showed us chatgpt and said 'you should base your personal essays off of this' and it was a struggle not to leave the room and walk into the ocean

This has to be one of humorist Alexandra Petri’s most brilliant columns yet.  Enjoy! 😁
FROM THE DESK OF FLORIDA GOV. RON DESANTIS — FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
As we in Florida celebrate Month (what other states call Black History Month), it has come to our attention that woke ideologies have penetrated not just the African American Studies AP course framework but also every other Advanced Placement class.
We were heartened that the College Board updated its curriculum for the African American Studies course for what it claimed were unrelated reasons after we raised objections to the inclusion of Black queer topics and works from thinkers such as bell hooks and Angela Davis. It was so nice that their unrelated edits coincided with our specific complaints; we feel like we’ve won, even if they insist that is not what happened.
But we cannot stop here. These same woke ideologies have penetrated every single AP offering. We would like to see the following changes made to these additional courses as soon as possible.
AP European History: Lots of talk about “allies” and “allyship.” Seems unnecessary in a history course. Mentions allies (including communists) working together to defeat Nazis — this, again, feels needlessly political. Describes book burnings as definitively negative. References to France, the French.
AP Human Geography: Existence of Ukraine as a sovereign nation presented as fact. Teach the controversy, please!
AP Chemistry: Students are urged to call some things “basic” as a judgment — this must stop. Instead, say that a chemical compound “enjoys Starbucks” or “favors the music of Taylor Swift.” Stop students from titrating; this is not something they should be doing at school. Singling out some gases as “noble” because they are “less volatile” has the potential to hurt feelings and should be stopped. Okay to study DNA but not mRNA.
AP Calculus: Omit positive references to integration and change.
AP Art History: Filth! Put fig leaves on all those statues, and then we can reevaluate.
AP Comparative Government and Politics: Description of voting as an unalloyed good is misleading.
AP Physics: “Resistance” and “resistors” have no place in a science course.
AP U.S. History: Mentions events from the American past.
AP Statistics: This whole course seems engineered to make anti-vaxxers feel “wrong” and “lesser.” Need to stress that there is more than one correct way to interpret statistics.
AP Latin: Every word of this seems obscene. “Cum gladiis et fustibus”? “Homo bulla™? “Dix”? These are the same people who gave us all those nude statues, and it shows.
AP English Literature: Includes books. We can’t stand books.
AP Biology: No objections, but see attached 15-page complaint from Texas.

hi guys have some RANDOM SOUKOKU HEADCANNONS because i’m procrastinating my holiday homework lol (like i genuinely can’t bring myself to do it so i’ll just uh, cram it all before school actually starts)
contrary to popular belief, dazai is actually the good cook between the two of them :) chuuya burned down the entire kitchen once when he tried to make rice, so dazai removed his kitchen-entering privileges. dazai can actually cook well, he just enjoys seeing the shocked/scared faces of the people he serves his food to when he makes it nasty
dazai replaced their couch with a foldable couch bed because whenever he makes chuuya mad, he gets sent to sleep on the couch, and their old one was uncomfortable and not big enough for his lanky ass legs
chuuya once thought dazai was a burglar when he was drunk and smacked him in the face with a frying pan, which broke dazai’s nose. he (chuuya) cried while apologising when he sobered up
they have movie marathon nights, except they speedrun movies separately and fight to see how many more movies they can watch than the other before the clock strikes 7:00am and dazai has to go to work
when dazai did the “that’s what i love about you!” thing to chuuya when they were younger, chuuya actually wanted to punch dazai because he was so flustered. he actually went back to his room to punch his pillow and scream into it about how much he liked dazai back and how he messed up his response
chuuya likes it when dazai drives, because it’s so adrenaline inducing and it’s funny to see the looks on civilian’s faces when they speed pass them and almost crash into the lamp post
dazai’s home wallpaper is a picture of chuuya drooling in his sleep, and chuuya’s one is of dazai screaming and running away from a dog
i feel like they would both be really good at styling hair and doing makeup from kouyou’s lessons and all the infiltration missions they have to go on... although, i can picture chuuya trying to pry a bite of lipstick out of dazai’s mouth because he read the contents and tried to commit suicide by eating it lol
they have a built in wine cellar in their house (inspo from my aunt’s house lol. she has a fucking wine cellar in there stock full of expensive alcohol and there’s even a catalogue) and it’s super super cold. they have two silly fuzzy pairs of slippers, one is crab designed and the other is slug designed lol
yes ig that’s all for now :D
