it shouldn’t surprise you to know that i have many opinions about sport (but also in general)
i was googling some info about rhythmic gymnastics and one of the results was some, like, time magazine article about ‘it’s time to cull the summer olympics. we don’t need rhythmic gymnastics or artistic swimming &c.’ and i can’t stop thinking about it like okay: 
1. only women compete in these sports so excluding them exclusively excludes women, and women have historically been excluded from the olympics but also sport in general - for example, women were only allowed to compete in weightlifting for the first time in 2000 at sydney. that’s only 20 years ago. twenty years ago. literally in your lifetime. let women play sport. my god.
2. yes, these are aesthetic sports, and yes, i do think that it’s a problem that women are encouraged to participate in aesthetic sports (dance, gymnastics, diving, artistic swimming, cheerleading &c.) rather than performance sports but that’s a conversation for another time. this point is about how hard these sports still are. i compete in both an aesthetic sport (irish dance) and performance sports (crossfit, powerlifting, and previously swimming) and let me tell you, competing in irish dance is so much more stressful. it doesn’t really matter what you look like in performance sports - no one’s judging your lines or stage presence or whether you’re smiling or not - but they ARE for aesthetic sports. the nature of these sports requires athletes to not only perform athletically but also make it look really fucking easy, and that’s what people forget. you can watch some sports and understand how hard they are because athletes don’t train to keep a smile on their face during, like, a 800 m run or whatever, but you watch simone biles’ floor routine and tell me if she makes it look easy.
(i) yes, there are problems within these sports leading to anxiety, eating disorders, &c.; i know, i’m not going to talk about them here because they’re not exclusive to aesthetic sports. they’re common in all women’s sports
(ii) most of the time there’s very little money in these sports so that means limited access to recovery methods and sports trainers. you know when you see someone go to the bench in a match and the sports trainer tapes them up? that doesn’t happen. you tape yourself up. you don’t have a massage waiting for you at the end of your performance/event. you just stretch the sore bits yourself. you don’t have an entourage. it’s just you.
(iii) just because something looks easy doesn’t mean it is. it means that they’ve trained extra to make it look easy.
3. where else are these sports going to get exposure? what channel televises the artistic swimming world champs? how is anyone ever going to watch them except for the olympics?
4. similar to 3. if fucking FOOTBALL and TENNIS and BASKETBALL and GOLF get to be olympic sports while already having extensive competition, exposure, and MONEY, why not these?

At the very least it would give my girlfriends a good giggle over our next champagne catchup! You see the idea of me in a gym is like water and oil, they just don't mix. I seem to lack the main two criteria of being allowed to set foot in a gym, fitness and co-ordination. But I am determined to see what all the fuss is about for myself and before I can talk myself out of it, I find the least threatening CrossFit gym in Sydney and I book in a consultation.
The first thing I noticed when I arrive for my appointment was the absence of those long rows of clunky cardio machines and menacing weight stations. I breathe a small sigh of relief, just the sight of those contraptions fills me with fear (flashback to an unfortunate incident involving me and a treadmill that I am yet to recover from). What are the benefits of CBD?  Let's just say I do not have the necessary machinery skills to operate a toaster some days let alone operate the dashboard of what looks to me like an aeroplane navigation system. So I was pleased to see laid out on a huge black meat before me some basic pieces of fitness equipment that didn't look like they could cause me an injury. The instructor who was showing me around went on to explain that the concept of CrossFit is simple, workouts are based on core, functional movements that are performed at the highest possible intensity.
This varies with each individual and the key to its success is its adaptability to everyone from an elite athlete to an office worker who hasn't seen the inside of a gym for years. Programs are carefully designed with variety in mind so people don't get bored, and all exercises are scaled to suit the various fitness levels in the class.
So I began a basic body weight movement workout with a coach and I was surprised to learn to go through some of the basics that I had been doing them wrong all this time. This was dangerous because it was risking injury and limiting any potential to see successful results. I also found myself having fun, something I never thought I would say I had at a gym.
A few other people like me who were curious enough to put their foot in the door that day and attend the same Beginners Class were all yelling out words of encouragement to each other and we all felt a common bond by the end. There's a common theme I discovered the world of CBD , and that's the real emphasis on building relationships within the group and forming your own community within. I felt a real sense of accomplishment as I walked away and felt like I wanted more. I had an understanding of why people were suddenly abandoning the traditional gyms where it felt so impersonal, in favour of being surrounded by people cheering you on to push yourself to your limits and celebrating your achievements with you reach your goals. Okay okay, I have seen enough - I get it. I want more and I am a CrossFit convert.
