I see that you're Ukrainian and I saw two arts with Ukrainian culture. Is there some meanings behind it, references? Could you please tell more? I love seeing artist drawing their culture. It's amazing
OH, anon! You have no idea how it made me happy to know you're curious about my country. And yes, there's a lot to tell, so thank you so much for asking!
I'll try to keep it as short as possible and not turn it into the lecture, so here we go!
So, I have two arts, featuring Ukrainian culture
So, all the jewelry here is traditional Ukrainian jewelry, and not just random. Important note: all Ukrainian culture is about the beauty of layers, in clothes, jewelry, literature, in art.
For example, this one from the left art is called dukach - a medallion, which is supplemented with additional jewelry elements, such as ribbons, bows etc. Annie wears a lion medallion, of course, as a reference to her surname.
Another element, under the dukach, the necklace with the half moons, is called zgrada. The base consists of crosses in two or three rows strung on a string or a dart, in the spaces between them there are tubes or spirals made of brass or copper. Well, the truth is that zgrada can be not only with crosses but also with other elements. Here are half moons that are a reference to another Ukrainian piece of jewelry, lunnitsa. It's a talisman ornament in the form of a crescent with the tips down. Lunnitsa was called to ensure the continuation of the family, it was endowed with the properties of a family talisman, capable of harmonizing the relationship of spouses. It was also believed that the talisman promotes restful sleep, drives away nightmares, and protects the owner from nighttime evil spirits.
Finally, the red necklace that we call namysto. The more layers of necklaces a woman had, the wealthier she was considered. Here Annie wears 10 (!) strings of the namysto, and it's not just a "cheap" gem, it's corals!
Now, about earrings!
Both Armin and Annie wear earrings, and it's the usual shape of the Ukrainian traditional earrings, but we have a small interesting detail here with Armin.
Actually, in both arts Armin is a Cossack - the Ukrainian warrior, who decided against all odds to fight for the independence of Ukraine. All of them were struggling in slavery (not really the "usual" form of slavery but more military like) and under other countries' protectorate, but if we put it VERY simply, they were fed up and started fighting for Ukraine and the freedom of their homeland. That's why they are usually called "people of a free spirit".
And Armin wears earrings in both of his ears and in Cossack culture - it's also the symbol of his status. So, if the Cossask wears it on his left ear - indicates that the Cossack was the only son of his mother; on the right — signals that the man is the last representative of his family; both have a sign that the Cossack is the only child of his parents. So, yeah! Only child Armin!
About the embroidery!
Each region of Ukraine has various embroidery techniques, starting from the color of the threads used and to the ornaments/motifs the shirt is adorned. Both Armin and Annie wear floral and geometry ornaments that are widely used in the central-north part of Ukraine such as the Poltava and Chernihiv regions. But also you can find similar ornaments in Kharkiv, Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, but all of them differ in colors and shapes.
Now, Annie's flower crown or wreath that we call vinok.
Usually, vinok is worn by girls and unmarried women, sometimes, even after marriage, women wear it, accompanied by a head shawl or kerchief. Flowers here aren't also random, but each of them symbolizes something: malva and peony - beauty, hope, the long lives and symbol of home, of Homeland; centaurea - simple and quiet life.
And ending it all, just want to add that the left art with the ornaments in the background - it's an imitation of one of the traditional Ukrainian ornaments that is widely used for the decoration of walls, plates, cups etc; and for the second one - Ukraine has a lot of sunflower fields, so that's landscape is very dear for me.
Thank you once again for asking, and I hope it was interesting!

Taken - Zutara -Part 64
First / Previous / Next / Masterpost
Katara tried her best not to hover when, on the morning of their last full day on the Black Cliffs, Zuko pulled Aang aside to train. She knew that Aang needed to practice his firebending, and while this 'lightning redirection' sounded like a very useful skill, she worried about the strain it would put on Zuko's still recovering heart. It was even more worrying that Zuko had only practiced it in theory, even if it was under Iroh's watchful eye.
She stood off to the side, half watching the two, half listening to Sokka explain her role in the invasion. She would be on the front lines, alongside Zuko, helping protect the ships from Fire Nation attack, until Toph and Suki returned from their mission. Once they were regrouped, they would go underground, invade the bunker. It was unlikely that Ozai and Azula would be in the same room, so they would have to split up. Zuko would take Suki, and the two would go after Azula. They would hopefully be enough for whatever forces were guarding her. In contrast, Katara would be going with Aang, Toph, and Sokka to hunt down Ozai.
"I don't like having to split up," she confessed, scowling down at the plans. "It weakens us as a whole."
"I know," Sokka said, a tightness in his voice. "But we have to. We'd send more to help Zuko, but we can't pull from the invasion force. We need them at full, in case we go over the eclipse, and they need to hold the city when the fire power comes back on."
"I know," Katara sighed. Getting up, she went to check on Aang and Zuko, the later of which seemed to be giving a lecture.
"Uncle said it's important to not let it touch your heart," Zuko was saying. "It has to go through your stomach. If it touches your heart, you could die." Katara didn't point out that in Zuko's case, it was likely more 'would' than 'could'.
"But then," Aang breathed, eyes wide like he expected Zuko to start hurling lightning. "How do you practice something like that?"
"You don't," Katara said, drawing both of their attention. "You have to learn the principal and pray to the spirits that you never have to use it."
Zuko nodded, face stern. "My uncle is the one that invented this technique. He and I, and now you, are the only ones that know it. If it comes down to it, and you have to use it, it'll be a perfect way to kill him."
Instantly, Aang's eyes widened. "K-kill?"
"My father can't redirect lightning. And he won't be expecting you to know how to either. When, not if, my father tries to shoot you with ligtning, if you can't dodge it, redirect it straight into his chest."
Katara could see the growing panic and uncertainty in Aang's gaze. She knew that he was trying to stay connected to his heritage, keep his culture alive. He had been so adamantly apossed to Zhao's execution in the North.
"Aang," she said, keeping her voice level and calm. "Ozai is the Fire Lord. And that comes with absolute control of the Fire Nation. Even if he's captured, Zuko can't become Fire Lord until Ozai forfeits the crown, which he wont. There would have to be an Agni Kai, which would defeat the purpose of the entire invasion. Unless we can delegitimize his claim to the throne, which we can't."
She didn't know why she said it. It just came out. And now Aang was perking up.
"Well, why not?"
"Well..." She glanced at Zuko, who was clearly at as much of a loss. "The best way would be to prove that Ozai isn't of Azulon's lines, which is impossible."
"And would take away my own claim," Zuko added.
Katara nodded. "Exactly. The other, would be to show proof that Ozai isn't a firebender, but he clearly is."
"Why would it matter if he was a firebender?" Aang asked, looking between them. "Kuei is the Earth King and he isn't an earthbender. And your dad isn't a waterbender, but he's still the chief."
"The Fire Nation is a little different," Zuko huffed, turning away a bit. He crossed his arms over his chest. "The Fire Lord is both the political and spiritual leader. Not that my father or grandfather held onto that. And Agni is our divine spirit, believed to be the one that blesses a firebender with their ability. If an heir to the throne isn't a firebender, they're removed from the line of succession. Weaker benders are even looked over for their younger siblings if they show stronger bending."
"Like you and your sister?"
"Aang!"
Zuko grit his teeth. "I'm going for a walk."
"Zuko-" Before she could say anything else, Zuko was pushing himself up and heading off for the trees. He snagged his swords as he went, and Katara worried about him straining something.
"Aang," Katara said slowly, turning back to the boy. He blinked at her. "You need to understand, that while I would love for you not to have to do this, there's no other way."
"It goes against everything the monks ever taught me," Aang said, his eyes cast downward. "I know Fire Lord Ozai is a horrible person, and the world would be better without him, but he's still a human being. He's a person, and I can't just go around taking out people I don't like." Lifting his head, his eyes were wide and so, so young. "Isn't there any other way?"
Katara wished she could say yes. She wished that she didn't have to tell this little boy he had to kill someone, take a life. They were all young. Sokka was only barely considered an adult by the tribe, and none of them were anywhere close to the legal drinking age in the Earth Kingdom. In the Fire Nation, they were still in that gray area between child and young adult.
And yet, here they were. Participating in a war started generations ago, some of the lead planners in a full scale invasion, and discussing killing a man. Aang didn't need her. He needed an adult who could understand the weight he was under.
"Maybe you could meditate," Katara suggested. "Maybe try to talk to one of your past lives. Like Roku, or the last Air Avatar? They might have some better advice?"
For a moment, Aang looked unsure. Finally, he nodded. "Yeah. I think I will, Katara. Thank you."
With that, Aang grabbed his glider and flew off, in search of a quiet spot to be alone. Katara let out a sigh of relief, and went to start getting dinner ready. She was sure he would be fine.
If she had known that, come morning, Aang still wouldn't have returned, she might have stopped him.

Love is a powerful weapon; learn to wield it
☆ characters: naga!kim & singha!you ☆ genre: fantasy kingdom au, guardian spirits au ☆ warnings: brief mention of blood, death and violence ☆ request: DV15. form this prompt list ☆ summary: you’re still too young to understand what it means to fight for your loved ones, but Kim tries his best to guide you towards the right direction ☆ words: 1,8k ☆ dedicated to: @dat-town ♥
There was a parallel world outside that only a few could see; a prosperous kingdom behind a thin veil where most guardians lived. Some of these fearsome albeit well-respected creatures possessed the power of shapeshifting, some remained the same for centuries if the demons of the human realm didn’t shorten their life span drastically. Like it had happened to your maternal uncle before his twin daughters had taken over the temple that he had been protecting half of his life in Siam or your grandfather who had died before you had been born, sacrificing his life for the villagers who had worshipped him and his twin for decades, wishing for peace after long years of internal war.
As young Singhas, you and your twin brother both lived in Wattana, the capital city of your kingdom, in an institute close to the royal palace, where the king and queen could keep an eye on your improvement as guardian candidates. Since the vast majority of your kind had never cared enough about humans to show their faces on the other side of the veil, those who were willing to dedicate their existence to the weak and fallible were given proper training to be able to carry out their mission. You were taught about human history, different cultures that acknowledged your existence and defence and offence techniques that could have helped you win a fight against much greater enemies. To say that you loved every second of your training might have been a stretch, but you did love following in your family’s footsteps despite the limited time your teachers granted you to spend with your friends and relatives. You assumed it was their way of making you all get used to their absence once you moved to the human world.
After all, only guardians on duty could cross the border, and protecting one’s temples and people was a job that never ended. There would be no vacations or paid sick leaves. Actually, according to your teachers, both you and your brother would need to look for a human job once you became a part of the human world as blending in was the easiest way to pick up on the telltale signs when all hell was about to get loose. Humans loved gossiping that much.
The muffled screams and the distinct smell of Garuda blood were the first things that had gotten your attention when on a particularly lonely night you decided to walk around in the garden behind your accommodation to feel closer to your father. You two might have never met as he had needed to leave for the human world with his twin after their father’s death, but you liked to think that you were looking at similar moons.
‘You’re disgusting, you human-fucker piece of shit,’ someone groaned, the pain behind each and very world palpable. Even from a distance, even without looking at their face, you knew that their pain wasn’t one of a friend who had been betrayed. They felt the pain as if their body was nearing its limits.
‘Poor choice of last words,’ your teacher retorted with the usual nonchalance in his voice that made the ease he sliced the Garuda’s throat even more frightening. Your nails sank into palms as you peeked out from behind the tree trunk that you were using as your shield. Your stomach dropped the moment the creature’s head touched the ground.
In spite of those years you had spent in the institute, despite how seriously the royal couple and your teachers took your education, it was your first time witnessing another guardian’s death. The amount of blood that slowly pooled around the headless body was a lot more vast than you would have thought; the still corpse didn’t dissolve into thin air, either, as quickly as you had assumed based on the books and stories you had read.
You couldn’t take your eyes off the Garuda’s eerily wide eyes. It felt like he was staring at you even in his death.
‘Are you planning to stay there all night?’ Your teacher’s voice pulled you out of your stupor, the disapproving hum at the end of his question echoing amusement. You weren’t sure it was a good sign or you should have been terrified. ‘If that’s how you react when you get scared, you should give up on becoming a guardian. You’ll just get yourself and your brother killed.’
It panged, how dismissively the Naga spoke. As though he thought you were a lost case; as if your dedication meant nothing to him just because, for a moment, your feet turned into stone.
Determined to not show any sign of weakness or frustration, you held your chin high and stepped out from behind the tree, feigning nonchalance. So what if it was the fearsome Naga, the guardian of merciless royal families, Kim Theerapanyakul who had called you incompetent? You knew your worth. You just had to remind him that you were the top student of your class for a reason.
‘I saw nothing,’ the lie fell from your lips immediately and honestly, you were pretty proud of how stable your voice came out while facing someone as deadly and rough around the edges as the Naga. You could almost see yourself walk away from this situation unharmed.
Expect…
‘You saw enough,’ he corrected you, the subtle smirk in the corner of his mouth unnerving. It was giving you the chills, but you willed your body to remain calm. Sure, you shouldn’t have been out so late at night, you should have walked in the opposite direction as soon as you had smelled the blood in the air, but it wasn’t necessarily against the rules. Until Kim had some sort of permission or reason to kill the other guardian.
Because he had had one, right?
He had to have a good reason. You refused to believe that he had been in the wrong because that would have meant one thing: you were an error in his plan that he needed to get rid of. You bit into your tongue to suppress the nervous gulp that you were about to do.
‘You can relax. He was about to bring hell to the human world with this,’ he showed you the tiny ruby that was atop of his palm before he shoved it into the inner pocket of his leather jacket. You furrowed your brows but nodded in acknowledgement nevertheless. You had never heard about a gemstone so dangerous before, but maybe it was a part of a more complex plan. He wasn’t obligated to tell you all the details.
It was most probably for the better that he didn’t tell you anything more.
‘Wasn’t he a guardian?’ Was yet another question that shouldn’t have left your mouth, but it bugged you: was it necessary to go to such extremes instead of talking things out? Or was there a possibility that there weren’t only demons out there but fellow guardians, too, who wanted to harm those your family members had given their lives for?
Kim tilted his head sideways as his gaze loitered over your body from head to toe. He said nothing, but the silence was as good as any answer could have been. You felt sick and angry.
You were frustrated because you had just realised that you were still too young and naive for people like Kim to not laugh at you when you claimed you knew the world.
The Naga must have picked up on your unstable emotional state because instead of sending you back to your room or scolding you more for your poor reaction, he sighed and sat down on the grass, wordlessly asking you to do the same with another tilt of his head.
It took you a couple of seconds, but you eventually sat down next to him.
When you would tell your brother about your night the following day, you wouldn’t be able to explain how you ended up discussing the difference between a good guardian and powerful guardian - especially because you had been talking about the ones who lost their way and got corrupted in the process -, but you would have no problem reciting your teacher’s conclusion on the matter. In fact, his words might have stuck with you for the rest of your life.
‘They, good guardians, die for love. You kill for it.’ The impact was immediate as a part of you understood that what he was saying would change the way you saw the world forever. However, another part of you, that had barely lived two decades, couldn’t make much sense of the statement. Had he implied that guardians that lost their life were weak?
Wasn’t dying for those people you were protecting one of the most respected ways to leave the world behind?
Your eyes grew wide when Kim poked your forehead with his index and middle fingers. Your neck bent backwards and a pained groan slipped past your lips because of how unexpected his gesture was.
‘Go, sleep. I won’t go easy on you if you’re late from your morning run,’ he warned you, but despite his words and your lasting confusion, you felt more at ease in his company now than you had felt before your conversation.
You were still sitting on the grass, staring out of your head, when the Naga stood up and dusted off his jeans. He didn’t say anything more, nor did he steal a glance at you from above his shoulder from a distance. He became one with the shadows as easily as the rumours suggested. He was gone before you realised.
However, his words stayed with you. They didn’t go away as you grew into a more mature version of yourself who was a little more aware of how the real world worked with every passing day. A version of yourself who, despite the heartbreak, was strong enough to take over her father’s temple when the man and his brother failed to protect their humans from a backhanded attack led by a bitter guardian.
It took another decade and a half for your teacher’s words to finally make perfect sense to you. It happened so naturally you almost didn’t notice the changes: you crossed paths with a ridiculous human being who could not only see through the veil, but was also too fierce and reckless for his own good and as simple as breathing, your life went off its axis.
Before him, you would have fought until your body stopped moving if it meant you could protect those people who were depending on you and your brother. After him, you discovered the power that came with your desperation to destroy everything and everyone that meant harm to him. To stay with him. Because why would anyone die for peace and leave their loved ones behind?
When you genuinely cared about someone’s happiness, there were few things more cowardly than turning into a martyr just because it might have been what a good guardian would have done to avoid bloodshed.
the end.

Chapter 5. Crime
What’s to stop someone from killing people?
Much violent crime can be traced back to cultural factors. Violent crime, such as murder, would probably decrease dramatically in an anarchist society because most of its causes — poverty, televised glorification of violence, prisons and police, warfare, sexism, and the normalization of individualistic and anti-social behaviors — would disappear or decrease.
The differences between two Zapotec communities illustrates that peace is a choice. The Zapotec are a sedentary agrarian indigenous nation living on land that is now claimed by the state of Mexico. One Zapotec community, La Paz, has a yearly homicide rate of 3.4/100,000. A neighboring Zapotec community has the much higher homicide rate of 18.1/100,000. What social attributes go along with the more peaceful way of life? Unlike their more violent neighbors, the La Paz Zapotec do not beat children; accordingly, children see less violence and use less violence in their play. Similarly, wife-beating is rare and not considered acceptable; women are considered equal to men, and enjoy an autonomous economic activity that is important to the life of the community so they are not dependent on men. Regarding child-rearing, the implications of this particular comparison are corroborated by at least one cross-cultural study on socialization, which found that warm, affectionate socialization techniques correlate with low levels of conflict in society.[79]
The Semai and the Norwegians were both previously mentioned as societies with low homicide rates. Until colonialism, the Semai were stateless, whereas Norway is ruled by a government. Socialization is relatively peaceful among the Semai and the Norwegians alike. The Semai use a gift economy so wealth is evenly distributed, while Norway has one of the lowest wealth gaps of any capitalist country on account of its socialistic domestic policies. A further similarity is a reliance on mediation rather than punishment, police, or prisons to solve disputes. Norway does have police and a prison system, but compared with most states there is a high reliance on conflict mediation mechanisms not unlike those that flourish in peaceful, stateless societies. Most civil disputes in Norway must be brought before mediators before they can be taken to court, and thousands of criminal cases are taken to mediators as well. In 2001, agreement was reached in 89% of the mediations.[80]
So in an anarchist society, violent crime would be less common. But when it did occur, would society be more vulnerable? After all, one might argue, even when violence is no longer a rational social response, psychopathic killers might still occasionally appear. Let it suffice to say that any society capable of overthrowing a government would hardly be at the mercy of lone psychopathic killers. And societies that do not come about from a revolution but enjoy a strong sense of community and solidarity are capable of protecting themselves as well. The Inuit, hunter-gatherers indigenous to the arctic regions of North America, provide an example of what a stateless society can do in the worst-case scenario. According to their traditions, if a person committed a murder, the community would forgive him and make him reconcile with the family of the victim. If that person commits another murder, he would be killed — usually by members of his own family group, so there would be no bad blood or cause for feud.
The state’s punitive methods for dealing with crime make things worse, not better. The restorative methods for responding to social harm that are used in many stateless societies open new possibilities for escaping the cycles of abuse, punishment, and harm that are all too familiar to many of us.

Blog Post 07
This week's readings, especially the articles, really pulled me in and interested me. As a bachelor of arts and science student at UofG, I am particularly intrigued when nature and art come together as we analyze the relationship between the seemingly very different subjects in our core arts and science courses. When I tell people what my program is at guelph, I often get the response of “arts and science, wow those are two very different things to be doing at the same time,” and while yes they are very different subjects at face value, they intersect constantly and there is often not one without the other. The relationship of music with nature is a perfect example of these intertwined worlds, and as a lover of music and singing (even though I’m not a great singer), as well as a lover of nature and wildlife, this week's topic is very exciting to me.
The first question is “where is music in nature?” One of the articles for this week titled “The Music of Nature and the Nature of Music” gives many fantastic examples of music within nature. This article describes different animal species and their version of music, such as humpback whales and birds. When discussing the whales for example, it was so interesting to discover how similar their version of “music” is to ours, as the article mentions that humpback whale songs have similar structure and rhythms to songs made by birds and even humans (Krause, G.P. et al., 2001). This is crazy to think about as whales, birds and humans do not seem to have much in common at all, yet somehow we all make similar music? The article even says “they use phrases of a similar length to ours -- a few seconds -- and create themes out of several phrases before singing the next theme (Krause, G.P. et al., 2001).” This sounds like whales, a part of nature and wildlife are spending time forming these songs, intentionally making them sound pleasant and performing them throughout the years, passing them on to their children just like humans have done for years (Krause, G.P. et al., 2001). Whales aren't just making random sounds and humans are interpreting it as music because they chose to, whales even prefer to use the technique of repetition just like music artists do (Krause, G.P. et al., 2001). They discover what works well, sounds nice, and is easily remembered and they use that material many times over. In an evolution course I took last semester I learned all about the evolutionary crossing of whales and humans, but this has not happened for millions and millions of years, which makes this even more outstanding that our creations of music are so similar. This is a perfect example of music within nature, music is a universal thing which is why it is so beautiful as almost anyone in the world has some sort of relationship or connection with music, and this article provides proof that this extends further than humans, almost every species within nature has a relationship with music.
Here are some photos from when I was whale watching in Victoria, BC.
The next question is much the same but different, “where is nature in music? If you are someone discovering the world of music within nature, then you are likely someone who seeks out learning about nature and is passionate about the treatment and well being of nature, as well as a lover of music. Well, how can we get more people to pay attention to nature, to get excited about learning about it and to become educated and involved in the protection and well being of it. As we have discussed, music is a giant phenomenon and more people than not love to listen to music, play music, or have music as a big factor of their religion or culture. This means almost everyone is engaging in music in some form or another, much more than people are actively engaging with nature other than existing passively within it in their everyday lives. Incorporating nature within music is an extremely beneficial way to get people thinking about nature when they wouldn't have otherwise and is an enjoyable way to learn. An example of incorporating nature within music is described in the course content within this week's lesson. A musician named Ben Mirin found attempting to bring these two things together an exciting challenge, and he began to incorporate wildlife sounds such as birdsongs into his musical work. This is a genius way to plant a seed in the minds of the audience as they will enjoy the music, and find the mystery sounds intriguing. Most people won't be able to recognize what these sounds are or why Ben incorporated them into his song, but they will be interested enough to go find out, softly leading them more into the world of nature by curiosity. As said within the lesson, “How can a person connect with endangered species that they’ve never seen nor experienced? Create modern music featuring animals' sounds, calls, and songs, of course! (Hooykaas, 2024)” and this is such a great point. For non-nature people, music is a great gateway as it touches so many people in so many ways. This creates a positive ripple effect, leading to more attention towards issues surrounding nature and a bigger push towards nature and environmental protection.
Finally I will touch on the third part of this blog prompt, a song that reminds me of a certain landscape. I have many examples come to mind when asked this question as I attach memories to songs constantly. This actually helps me remember more meaningful moments, as I am reminded of memories all the time when I listen to music. In 2022 I traveled all around Africa with my family for the second time. When we were in Cape Town, South Africa my cousins and I decided to go on a hike. Some of my cousins are very adventurous and definitely fearless, but me, not so much. This hike up a mountain had very narrow paths on the edge of cliffs and extremely steep areas that we had to climb up. It started to rain and become slippery and I was pretty scared. My cousins and I started to sing “Aint No Mountain High Enough” by Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson to distract me from my fear of heights and to get us to the top of the mountain. All of us singing this song while taking in the beauty of the nature surrounding us, and the view once we made it to the top was something so magical. I don't think I would remember it as vividly without this connection to a song, and everytime I hear it, I am taken right back to that moment singing with my family and experiencing the beauty of nature.
I am excited to hear about all of your connections with music and nature!

Crossed Paws, Book 1: Rising
The Clan Lore of Crossed Paws
STARCLAN
In my universe, unlike in canon, StarClan can interfere with the world of the living but also functions much closer to our concept of the afterlife. It is a spiritual and supernatural place that cannot be observed but there are occasions when cats with "special" abilities can communicate with StarClan under certain conditions.
Cats with these abilities can communicate with StarClan at Three Trees, the burial site of the Fang Trio, and can receive prophecies and messages. These cats act as messengers between the Clans and the cats of StarClan.
THE WARRIOR CODE
The Warrior Code is a concept that doesn't strictly exist, however, there is an unspoken set of rules that the Clans and Clan cats follow in their daily lives to ensure a peaceful existence alongside each other. There are a handful of rules which are universal, such as protecting the young and elderly, though the stances on other rules can vary from leader to leader.
HISTORY AND CULTURE
The clans were founded in the early 1900s, though how they actually came to be is unknown to the current generation of Clan cats, however, many legends and stories surround the founders of the original three clans. Of these legends and stories, only one has ever been believed by Clan cats to be truthful, though some cats are even doubtful of this since these stories all come from the elders.
Due to the introduction of herbs and plants into the Clans and the training of Herbalists, the Clans are a lot larger than they were in the past and this has made survival more important than ever, especially due to the current famines that are occurring.
Though the Clans were originally created to be a unification of cats under the Fang Trio, eventually there were periods of infighting and conflict which led to separation into four clans rather than the original three.
Currently, the political state of the Clans is complicated. Some moons, they are living peacefully, though other moons are wrought with conflict and violence. Right now, they are somewhere between the two, with WoodClan still recovering from the reign of their previous leader, Woodstar, who had led the Clan to the brink of starvation.
RANKS WITHIN THE WARRIOR CLANS
The ranks within the Clans are much different in my universe than they are in Warriors canon. There are many more ranks, as well as titles that the most prestigious and honoured cats may receive. Other cats may also receive significant titles based on achievements, and a special ceremony is held in order for a title to be bestowed. Among the Clans, this is known as the Honouring Ritual.
WARRIOR RANKS
Sentinel
A Sentinel is a highly respected and crucial role within the Clan, typically filled by the most vigilant and experienced Warriors. These seasoned Warriors are entrusted with the vital task of guarding the Clan's territory and ensuring the safety of their fellow Clanmates. Their duties include conducting border patrols to detect and respond to potential threats, such as intruding predators or rival Clans, as well as performing nightly vigils at the camp entrance. Sentinels must remain alert and observant, ready to act swiftly to protect the Clan and maintain its security.
Beyond physical demands, the role of a Sentinel is mentally challenging, requiring not only combat skills but also the wisdom and experience to anticipate and address dangers. Their presence as the first line of defense is a key factor in the Clan's survival, and their unwavering dedication symbolizes the strength, loyalty, and protective values of the Clan. As such, Sentinels are held in high regard, their commitment and vigilance serving as a cornerstone of the Clan's security and peace of mind.
Mentor
A Mentor in the Clans is a prestigious role given to experienced Warriors who are responsible for training young Apprentices, preparing them to become full-fledged Warriors. This involves not only teaching combat techniques but also instructing in stealth, hunting, and other essential skills for survival. A key part of a Mentor's role is to instill in their Apprentices the Warrior Code, ensuring they understand the values of loyalty, honour, and respect that are central to Clan life.
The bond between Mentor and Apprentice is significant and often extends beyond the Apprentice's training period. Mentors serve as role models, shaping their Apprentice's character and guiding them in understanding their responsibilities within the Clan. The effectiveness of a Mentor is seen in the growth and maturity of their Apprentice, making mentorship a vital aspect of the Clan's continuity and strength.
Fighter
In the Clans, the rank of Fighter is a prestigious title bestowed upon the most ferocious and formidable Warriors, those whose exceptional combat skills and fierce demeanor have earned them high regard within their Clan. Fighters are often seen as the ultimate defenders of their Clan, possessing not only raw strength but also a deep understanding of battle tactics and an unyielding spirit. Their prowess in combat sets them apart from other warriors, marking them as individuals who can be relied upon in the most perilous situations.
The duties of a Fighter are extensive and vary from Clan to Clan, reflecting the unique challenges and threats faced by each group. However, common responsibilities include fending off predators that pose a danger to the Clan, such as large predators or rival animals, as well as engaging in combat with Fighters from other Clans during territorial disputes or wars. Fighters are often called upon during times of conflict, their skills pivotal in ensuring the Clan's survival and dominance. Due to their exceptional abilities and the critical nature of their role, Fighters are frequently honoured in special ceremonies, such as the Honouring Ritual, where they are often bestowed with significant titles that recognize their contributions and valor. This recognition not only solidifies their status within the Clan but also serves as an inspiration to other Warriors, highlighting the importance of strength, bravery, and dedication to the Clan's cause.
Hunter
The rank of Hunter is a specialized and respected position reserved for members who exhibit exceptional skill in the essential tasks of hunting, foraging, and scavenging. Hunters are the lifeblood of the Clan, responsible for ensuring a steady supply of food and resources that sustain their fellow Clanmates. This rank is typically awarded to younger and more agile cats, whose speed, sharp reflexes, and keen senses make them particularly adept at these critical tasks.
While most Hunters focus on honing their hunting skills, mastering the art of stalking prey and making swift, precise kills, they are also required to possess a basic knowledge of both foraging and scavenging. This versatility is crucial, as the availability of prey can fluctuate with the seasons, and the Clan must rely on other sources of sustenance during lean times. Foraging involves gathering edible plants, herbs, and other natural resources, while scavenging may require locating and retrieving carrion or other usable materials from the environment. The rank of Hunter is therefore not just about physical prowess but also about adaptability, resourcefulness, and a deep understanding of the environment, making these cats indispensable to the Clan’s survival.
Protector
The rank of Protector holds a critical role within the Clan, embodying the essence of loyalty, vigilance, and strength. Protectors are the backbone of the Clan's defense, ensuring the safety and stability of both the leadership and the broader community. Their primary function is to safeguard the Clan's leaders, such as the High Saint or Ambassadors, who rely on Protectors to shield them from any potential threats, both external and internal. These Protectors are typically the most experienced and battle-hardened members of the Clan, trusted for their unwavering dedication and exceptional combat skills. They serve as a personal guard unit, constantly by the side of the leadership, ready to act at a moment's notice to preserve the well-being and authority of those in power.
Meanwhile, the younger and less experienced Protectors take on a slightly different, yet equally important, role within the Clan. These Protectors are assigned to patrol groups, where they learn the intricacies of their duties under the guidance of a Sentinel. These patrol groups are responsible for scouting the Clan's territory and ensuring that it remains free from threats such as predators, rival Clans, or other dangers. Patrols are meticulously scheduled to take place at Sun Rise, Sun High, and Sun Fall, ensuring that the Clan’s borders are consistently monitored throughout the day. These patrols are not only vital for maintaining the security of the Clan’s territory but also serve as a rigorous training ground for young Protectors, helping them to develop the skills, instincts, and discipline required to eventually ascend to the ranks of those who guard the leadership. Through this structured and tiered approach, Protectors play an indispensable role in maintaining the integrity, safety, and continuity of the Clan.
HEALER RANKS
Prophet
Within the Clans, the role of Prophet is a revered and mystical position, reserved for those who have been blessed with the extraordinary ability to communicate directly with StarClan, the ancestral spirits who guide and watch over the living. Prophets are not merely Healers; they are considered the spiritual leaders of the Clan, serving as the voice of StarClan and interpreting the will of their ancestors. These cats are chosen based on their ability to establish a strong connection with StarClan, a gift that is both rare and sacred. The depth and clarity of this connection determine a prophet's standing within the Clan’s spiritual hierarchy.
The internal ranking system of Prophets reflects the varying degrees of their connection to StarClan, with the highest rank being a Cassiopeian Prophet and the lowest an Orion Prophet. A Cassiopeian Prophet, akin to a cardinal in human religious systems, holds the greatest spiritual authority and is often seen as the chief interpreter of StarClan's will. This Prophet guides not only their own Clan but also provides spiritual counsel to other Clans, making them a figure of immense influence and respect.
On the other end of the spectrum, an Orion Prophet, comparable to a deacon, may have a less direct connection with StarClan but still plays a crucial role in the spiritual life of the Clan. These Prophets may assist in rituals, offer guidance to younger cats, and support the higher-ranking Prophets in their duties. Together, Prophets at all levels work to ensure that the will of StarClan is understood and followed, maintaining the spiritual health and unity of the Clan.
Shaman
The Shaman within a Clan holds a deeply sacred and mystical role, standing apart from other Healers due to their unique and extraordinary abilities. Unlike typical Healers who focus on the physical well-being of their Clanmates, a Shaman serves as a crucial link between the visible world and the spirit world. This cat possesses the rare and revered gift of being able to leave their physical body and travel into the spirit realm, a skill that is both awe-inspiring and vital to the spiritual health of the Clan. The Shaman’s role is not only to heal physical wounds but also to navigate the complex spiritual landscape, ensuring harmony between the living and the spirits of their ancestors.
One of the Shaman's most important duties is to assist Cassiopeian Prophets during burial rites. In this capacity, the Shaman plays a key role in ensuring that a Warrior’s spirit is properly guided into StarClan, the revered afterlife where the Clan’s ancestors reside. This sacred responsibility involves intricate rituals and deep spiritual knowledge, as the Shaman helps to secure the safe passage of the deceased, ensuring they join the ranks of StarClan.
Beyond this, the Shaman possesses a unique and formidable ability unmatched by any other Clan member: the power to communicate with the spirits of both the Dark Forest and the Unnamed Residence — realms associated with the more malevolent or lost souls. This ability to interact with these darker aspects of the spirit world makes the Shaman an essential figure in protecting the Clan from potential spiritual dangers, as well as offering a chance for redemption or understanding for those spirits that dwell outside of StarClan's light. The successor of the Shaman is chosen explicitly by StarClan once the previous Shaman has passed on.
Herbalist
Within a Clan, the rank of Herbalist is a fundamental and highly valued position, despite being the most common among Healers. These cats are the medical experts of the Clan, possessing extensive knowledge of the various herbs and plants that grow within their territory and beyond. Their expertise lies in the identification, properties, and applications of these natural remedies, which they skillfully employ to treat a wide range of ailments. From soothing minor wounds to combating serious infections and illnesses, Herbalists are the primary caregivers who ensure the Clan remains healthy and strong.
Although their role might seem ordinary compared to the more mystical ranks like Shamans or Prophets, Herbalists are actually among the most crucial members of the Clan. They are the first line of defense against the physical ailments that can threaten the well-being of their fellow Clanmates. Whether tending to a Fighter injured in battle, curing an Apprentice of an illness, or easing the suffering of an Elder with chronic pain, Herbalists are constantly at work, applying their deep understanding of nature’s medicine. Their steady, reliable presence is vital for the Clan’s daily survival, making them indispensable in maintaining the health and resilience of the community. The Herbalist's knowledge is often passed down through generations, ensuring that each new Herbalist is as skilled and prepared as those who came before, safeguarding the Clan's future through their healing paws.
Seer
A Seer is a unique and highly revered type of Prophet within the Clan, distinguished by their ability to receive and interpret visions directly from StarClan. Unlike standard Prophets, who primarily serve as interpreters of the ancestral messages and guidance, Seers are granted a more profound connection to the spiritual realm. They experience vivid, often prophetic visions that provide insights into what StarClan is currently doing or revealing. These visions can encompass a wide range of spiritual and temporal insights, including omens, glimpses of future events, or messages meant to influence the Clan's decisions.
The role of a Seer extends beyond mere interpretation of spiritual messages; they are instrumental in advising the leadership on how to navigate upcoming challenges and opportunities based on the divine omens they receive. Their visions often come as dreams or sudden flashes of insight, and they require careful contemplation and analysis to decode their full meaning. Seers are expected to provide the Clan's leaders with guidance that aligns with the will of StarClan, helping them to make informed decisions that will shape the future of the Clan. This direct line to the divine and the foresight offered by their visions make seers invaluable assets, as they help the Clan anticipate and prepare for what lies ahead, ensuring that their strategies and actions are in harmony with the broader spiritual direction provided by their ancestors.
APPRENTICE RANKS
Trainee
The rank of Trainee is a fundamental stage in a young cat's development within the Clan, marking the transition from a carefree Sacred to a disciplined and skilled member of the Warrior ranks. Unlike other Apprenticeships that might be geared toward a specific role within the Clan, Trainees are given a broad and comprehensive education that prepares them for any potential path under the rank of a Warrior. This phase of training is designed to equip them with a well-rounded set of skills, ensuring they are versatile and adaptable, ready to serve the Clan in whatever capacity is needed when they reach maturity.
Each Trainee is assigned to a Mentor, an experienced Warrior who takes on the responsibility of guiding their development. Mentors usually oversee groups of three or four Trainees, creating a collaborative learning environment where young cats can learn from both their Mentor and each other. The training they receive is extensive and covers a wide range of essential Warrior skills. This includes combat techniques to prepare them for battles, hunting strategies to ensure the Clan is well-fed, as well as specialized abilities such as climbing and swimming — vital for navigating the varied terrains within and beyond their territory. Mentors tailor their instruction to suit the needs and strengths of their Trainees, often incorporating additional skills they deem valuable, depending on the specific challenges the Clan may face. This period of rigorous training is crucial, as it lays the foundation for the Trainees to grow into capable and resourceful Warriors, ready to uphold the honor and security of the Clan. The Trainee training period typically lasts until the Trainee reaches the age of twelve moons.
Junior Herbalist
The rank of Junior Herbalist is a specialized apprenticeship within the Clan, dedicated to training young cats to become full-fledged Herbalists, the primary Healers. This apprenticeship lasts as long as a general Trainee's, but its focus is exclusively on the medicinal arts. Each Junior Herbalist is paired with a seasoned Herbalist Mentor who teaches them to identify various plants, understand their medicinal properties, and apply them correctly. This hands-on training covers everything from treating wounds and infections to curing illnesses, ensuring a thorough understanding of herbal medicine.
In addition to their theoretical education, Junior Herbalists accompany Hunters on foraging patrols. These patrols provide practical field training in identifying and harvesting the necessary herbs in their natural habitats. This dual approach ensures Junior Herbalists are well-versed in both the knowledge and practical skills required for their role. By the end of their apprenticeship, they are fully prepared to transition into the rank of a full Herbalist, ready to maintain the health and well-being of their Clan.
Disciple
The rank of Disciple is a specialized branch of Apprentice within the Clan, distinguished by their unique connection to StarClan and their innate spiritual abilities. Unlike regular Apprentices who are trained for various Warrior roles, Disciples are carefully chosen by Prophets and Seers due to their remarkable potential to communicate with StarClan. Often, these young cats have already begun receiving messages or visions from their ancestors, though they typically struggle to understand or interpret the spiritual guidance they receive. This natural but unrefined connection to the divine sets them apart, marking them as future spiritual leaders or guides within the Clan.
Disciple training is an open-ended process with no fixed completion date. Unlike other forms of apprenticeship, which have a clear timeline, the training of a Disciple continues until they demonstrate sufficient proficiency in their spiritual abilities. This training is deeply immersive and involves learning how to interpret visions, understand divine omens, and accurately receive messages from StarClan. The Cassiopeian Prophet, one of the highest spiritual authorities within the Clan, plays a crucial role in this process, assessing each Disciple's progress. Only when the Cassiopeian Prophet is confident in a Disciple's ability to reliably connect with and interpret StarClan's will do they declare their training complete. This rigorous and deeply spiritual journey prepares Disciples for their future roles as spiritual conduits within the Clan, ensuring that they are ready to guide their Clanmates with wisdom and divine insight.
Apprentice Mentor
The rank of Apprentice Mentor is a distinguished position within the Clan, separate from the general Apprentice rank, and is reserved for those young cats who have shown a particular talent for assisting their fellow Apprentices during their own training. This role is not automatically assigned but is instead offered to those Apprentices who have demonstrated a natural inclination towards leadership, guidance, and teaching. Typically, a Mentor may recommend a cat for this role after observing their helpfulness, patience, and ability to effectively support and instruct others in their group.
Becoming an Apprentice Mentor is unique within the Clan because it is one of the few ranks that a cat can pursue by request rather than being assigned based on necessity or ability alone. Once an Apprentice expresses interest and is deemed suitable, they undergo a specialized training period that is notably shorter than that of regular apprenticeship, lasting only six moons. Despite its brevity, this training is intense and requires a great deal of patience and dedication. Apprentice Mentors are taught how to refine their teaching techniques, learn more advanced skills, and develop the qualities necessary to guide younger Apprentices through their training. The goal is to prepare them not only to excel in their own warrior duties but also to take on the responsibility of mentoring future generations of Clan members, ensuring the continued strength and unity of the Clan.
Mediator
The rank of Mediator is a specialized Apprentice role within the Clan, designed for those destined to become Ambassadors — cats who play a crucial role in mediating and overseeing negotiations between various parties, whether within the Clan or between the Clan and external groups. Unlike other apprenticeships, the path to becoming a Mediator begins only after a cat has completed twelve moons of foundational Warrior training under the guidance of a Mentor. This ensures that aspiring Mediators possess a solid understanding of the Clan's culture, values, and warrior skills before embarking on their specialized training.
Once the initial Warrior training is complete, Mediator training focuses intensely on the development of negotiation and diplomacy skills. This period of training is relatively brief, lasting only four to six moons, but it is highly concentrated and tailored to the specific abilities and previous experiences of the Apprentice. During this time, the Mediator Apprentice hones their ability to navigate complex discussions, mediate disputes, and foster understanding between conflicting parties. The training emphasizes the importance of neutrality, empathy, and strategic thinking, all essential qualities for an effective Ambassador. Upon completion, the Mediator is well-prepared to take on the vital role of ensuring peaceful and fair resolutions to conflicts, safeguarding the interests of the Clan while maintaining harmonious relationships both within and beyond their borders.
LEADERSHIP RANKS
Herald
The Herald of a Clan holds a position equivalent in rank to that of a Deputy in traditional Warriors canon, serving as a key advisor and right hand to the High Saint, the Clan's leader. This prestigious role involves a wide range of responsibilities that are crucial to the smooth functioning of the Clan. One of the primary duties of the Herald is to assist the High Saint in overseeing various ceremonial aspects of Clan life, such as Naming Ceremonies where young cats receive their official names and ranks, and Honouring Rituals that celebrate significant achievements or transitions within the Clan.
In addition to their ceremonial duties, the Herald plays a vital role in maintaining communication and diplomacy between Clans. They are entrusted with the responsibility of carrying official messages and representing the Clan during crucial gatherings. Every full moon, the Herald is tasked with attending the Gathering, an important meeting where representatives from all Clans come together to discuss matters of mutual concern, resolve disputes, and share news. During these Gatherings, the Herald serves as the voice of their Clan, delivering messages and negotiating on behalf of the High Saint, ensuring that the Clan's interests are well-represented and that relations with other Clans remain stable and constructive. The role of the Herald is, therefore, integral to both the internal harmony of the Clan and its external diplomatic relations.
Ambassador
The Ambassadors of a Clan are esteemed diplomats who hold the crucial responsibility of managing negotiations, trade agreements, and other diplomatic engagements on behalf of their Clan. These cats are more than just negotiators; they are the official representatives of their Clan's values, culture, and interests, ensuring that their Clan's voice is heard and respected in all external interactions. Ambassadors are carefully chosen for their keen understanding of diplomacy, their ability to navigate complex situations, and their skill in fostering positive relations with other Clans and outside groups. Their work often involves delicate discussions where they must balance the needs and desires of their own Clan with the expectations and demands of others, making their role essential for maintaining peace and securing beneficial alliances.
In addition to their individual duties, Ambassadors play a vital role during significant Clan events, particularly at Gatherings where Ambassadors accompany the Herald and High Saint, providing strategic support and advice in any negotiations that arise between Clans. Their presence strengthens the Clan's position in these discussions, as they bring a deep understanding of diplomatic nuances and are adept at guiding conversations toward favorable outcomes. Whether it's securing trade deals, mediating conflicts, or representing their Clan's stance on important issues, Ambassadors are instrumental in shaping the external relationships of their Clan and safeguarding its future.
High Saint
The High Saint is the revered leader of a Clan, a position of immense power and responsibility, chosen by the divine will of StarClan with the crucial assistance of the Shaman. Typically, the cat elevated to this esteemed role has already proven themselves as a Herald or an Ambassador, demonstrating the leadership qualities and diplomatic acumen necessary to guide the Clan. Once selected, the High Saint undergoes the sacred Leadership Rite, a profound ceremony where StarClan bestows upon them the extraordinary gift of nine lives.
Each of these lives is tied to a distinct personality trait, such as courage, wisdom, or compassion, which the High Saint must nurture and embody throughout their leadership. This unique blessing not only extends their physical lifespan but also deepens their spiritual connection to StarClan, enhancing their ability to lead with a multifaceted perspective.
Despite their elevated status and the divine blessing of nine lives, the High Saint's ability to communicate with StarClan is not without its challenges. While they are capable of receiving messages from the ancestral spirits, their interpretation of these messages is often limited without the guidance of a Prophet or Seer. The Shaman aids in this communication, acting as a bridge between the High Saint and the spiritual realm, but it is the Prophets and Seers who provide the crucial insights needed to correctly understand and act upon StarClan's will. This dynamic makes the High Saint both a powerful and a dependent figure, as their leadership is intertwined with the spiritual counsel of their Clan's Prophets and Seers. As the embodiment of StarClan's chosen leader, the High Saint carries the weight of their Clan's future on their shoulders, guiding them through both prosperity and peril with the divine support of their ancestors.
OTHER RANKS
Elder
The Elders of the Clan are esteemed senior members who, due to age, injury, loss of sight, or illness, are no longer able to fulfill the physical demands of hunting or fighting. These cats, who have dedicated much of their lives to the service of the Clan, are held in high regard and treated with deep respect. Their advanced years and accumulated wisdom make them valuable sources of knowledge and experience, though their contributions are now more often in the form of guidance and counsel rather than direct action.
In their retirement, Elders receive dedicated care from younger Clan members, particularly the Apprentices. The Apprentices are responsible for bringing fresh-kill to the Elders, ensuring their dietary needs are met, and performing tasks such as picking out fleas and changing their bedding to maintain their comfort and health. Most Elders are retired Warriors or Healers, who have served the Clan in various capacities before stepping down from their active roles. However, Shamans are an exception; they often continue to practice their spiritual duties until the end of their lives, contributing to the Clan’s spiritual guidance.
Despite their retired status, many Elders are viewed as repositories of invaluable Clan history and tradition, offering insights and wisdom that continue to shape the Clan's values and decisions. Their presence is a reminder of the continuity and depth of the Clan's heritage, providing a bridge between the past and the present.
Scholar
A Scholar is a revered position held by an Elder within the Clan who undertakes the crucial role of documenting and preserving the Clan's history. This role, while not officially recognized as a formal rank within the Clan's hierarchy, is highly valued for its importance in maintaining the Clan's collective memory. The Scholar meticulously records significant events such as births, deaths, and other key occurrences that shape the Clan's legacy. This record-keeping is essential for ensuring that future generations of Clan cats have access to a detailed account of their history, including the achievements, struggles, and milestones of their predecessors.
Although the role of Scholar is not formalized with specific duties or rank, it is considered integral by the Clan due to its impact on cultural continuity and historical preservation. Scholars often possess a deep understanding of the Clan’s traditions, legends, and lineage, making them vital custodians of the Clan's heritage. They work to ensure that the knowledge and experiences of past generations are not lost but are passed down to younger members. By documenting the Clan’s history, Scholars play a significant role in shaping the identity and values of the Clan, fostering a sense of continuity and connection among its members. Their efforts help to ensure that the Clan's legacy endures, providing future generations with a rich tapestry of their shared past.
Blessed
The rank of Blessed is a revered status within the Clans, conferred upon she-cats who are either expecting kits or are actively caring for their own. This rank is not merely a functional role but is imbued with deep spiritual significance. A she-cat who becomes a Blessed is often viewed as having received a divine favour from StarClan, as it is believed that only by the will of StarClan are these she-cats blessed with the gift of motherhood. Consequently, Blesseds are highly esteemed by the Clan, embodying the Clan’s reverence for the sacred cycle of life and the belief that StarClan’s will is directly intertwined with their role in nurturing the next generation.
In addition to those who are pregnant or nursing, the rank of Blessed can also extend to she-cats who, while not bearing kits of their own, choose to assist and support other Blesseds in the nursery. This selfless dedication to helping raise and care for the Clan’s young reinforces the communal aspect of Clan life, where the well-being of the young is a shared responsibility.
Regardless of their personal situation, Blesseds are honored for their role in ensuring the future of the Clan, and their position is seen as a testament to StarClan’s blessing and the importance of fertility and nurturing within the Clan’s spiritual and social structure. The respect afforded to Blesseds underscores the Clan’s deep connection to their ancestors and the spiritual significance they place on the roles that ensure the continuity and growth of their community.
Sacred
The rank of Sacred refers to kits or kittens who are younger than six moons old within the Clan. These young ones hold a special status and are deeply revered by all Clan members, who regard them as divine gifts from StarClan. The reverence for Sacreds stems from the belief that their arrival is a direct blessing from the ancestors, and as such, they are afforded protection and care by every member of the Clan. Their presence is seen as a symbol of StarClan's favor and the continuation of the Clan's lineage and traditions.
Despite their significant status, Sacreds are typically unaware of the weight of their importance in Clan life due to their young age. The Clan places a great emphasis on ensuring their safety and well-being, viewing their nurturing as both a duty and an honor.
The loss of a Sacred, whether through stillbirth or miscarriage, is considered a profound tragedy and a serious omen from StarClan. Such events are deeply mourned, and although the occurrence is often interpreted as a sign or message from the spiritual realm, no Seer, Prophet, or Shaman has ever formally sought to clarify the meaning of these omens with StarClan. The interpretations surrounding these losses are left to the Clan’s collective beliefs and emotional responses, reflecting their deep spiritual connection and the significance they place on the lives of their youngest members.
AGE WITHIN THE WARRIOR CLANS
Moons
Being the Warrior equivalent to months, I prefer to use this concept of aging to refer to cats under a year, twelve moons, old. It makes aging a lot simpler to understand once the cats get older, as surely counting the seasons that pass is easier than counting every moon that passes.
Seasons
Using the number of a specific season passing to count a cat's age is done to simplify the work of a Scholar when noting a cat's age at time of death or some other important aspect of the cat's life. It also makes aging relatively easier for me to work out, as well. The season chosen to age a specific cat against is done so by choosing whichever season they were born in, for example: a cat who was born in winter would age 1 winter every time winter passes. It is the same for every season. This version of aging is only used once a cat has passed twelve moons old.
CEREMONIES AND RITUALS
The Blessing Ceremony
The Blessing Ceremony is a significant and intimate rite performed by the Shaman and the High Saint when a Blessed she-cat gives birth to her kits. This ceremony marks a momentous occasion, celebrating the arrival of new life and affirming the sacred bond between the Clan, StarClan, and the newborns. The ceremony is held with great reverence, underscoring the importance of the Blessed’s role in continuing the Clan’s lineage and fulfilling what is believed to be a divine will.
During the Blessing Ceremony, the Shaman and High Saint conduct a series of rituals designed to honor the newborn Sacreds and ensure their well-being. The Shaman may perform prayers or chants to invoke the protection and guidance of StarClan, while the High Saint, as the Clan's leader, blesses the Sacreds with a special ceremony that often includes ceremonial markings or offerings to symbolize the Clan’s acceptance and hopes for the new lives. The ceremony is attended by key Clan members, including other Blesseds, who gather to witness and celebrate the event. This rite not only serves to bless the new kits but also reinforces the Clan's spiritual and communal values, highlighting the interconnectedness of life and the divine favor believed to be bestowed upon the Clan.
The Naming Ceremony
The Naming Ceremony is a significant rite in Clan tradition with two distinct versions, each marking important milestones in the lives of Clan members.
The first version of the Naming Ceremony occurs when an Apprentice reaches the end of their training and is ready to assume their role as a full-fledged member of the Clan. This ceremony represents the culmination of the Apprentice's journey from youth to maturity and their readiness to take on the responsibilities of a Warrior or other designated role within the Clan. During this ceremony, the Apprentice is formally given their adult name, signifying their transition from an Apprentice to a recognized and respected member of the Clan. The ceremony is often a communal event, celebrated with the presence of other Clan members who witness and honor the new name, marking the Apprentice's official acceptance into the Clan's ranks.
The second version of the Naming Ceremony takes place in conjunction with the Blessing Ceremony, celebrating the birth of new kits by a Blessed she-cat. In this version, the ceremony is dedicated to the naming of the newborn kits. The Blessed has the honour of choosing the names for her kits, which are then presented in the ceremony. The Shaman plays a crucial role in this version, ensuring that the chosen names are recognized and blessed by StarClan. This dual ceremony serves to both celebrate the arrival of new life and integrate these new members into the spiritual and social fabric of the Clan. It symbolizes the Clan's commitment to honoring the divine connection and continuity of their lineage, with the Shaman’s role reinforcing the belief that the names are spiritually significant and protected by StarClan.
The Honouring Ritual
The Honouring Ritual is a significant ceremony led by the High Saint before the entire Clan to recognize and celebrate the exceptional achievements of individual members. This ritual acknowledges various accomplishments, from reaching notable ages and completing challenging tasks to receiving scars in combat. It is a formal event where the High Saint highlights the contributions and milestones of the honoured cats, emphasizing their impact on the Clan.
The ceremony serves to publicly honour and celebrate these achievements, reinforcing the values of courage, dedication, and service within the Clan. By recognizing the efforts of its members, the Honouring Ritual fosters a sense of pride and unity, reinforcing communal bonds and upholding the Clan’s traditions.
The Leadership Rite
The Leadership Rite is a sacred and pivotal ceremony that marks the elevation of a cat to the position of High Saint, the leader of the Clan, who is chosen by StarClan. This important rite is conducted during a full moon, symbolizing the alignment of the Clan's spiritual and temporal realms. The ceremony is overseen by the Shaman, who guides the chosen cat through this profound transition, ensuring that the sacred aspects of the rite are honored.
During the Leadership Rite, the cat receiving this prestigious role is bestowed with nine lives, each representing a distinct personality trait. These traits are intended to shape and influence the High Saint's leadership, guiding their actions and decisions throughout their time in office. The nine lives symbolize not only a divine favor but also the diverse qualities that the High Saint must embody and cultivate to effectively lead and inspire the Clan.
The new High Saint also receives a new name with the suffix -star, signifying their elevated status and connection to the Clan's spiritual heritage. This ceremony is not only a formal transition but also a spiritual reaffirmation of the High Saint’s role as the Clan’s leader and the embodiment of its values and traditions.
The Burial Ritual
Before the Burial Ceremony takes place, the deceased Clan cat’s body is carefully transported to the center of the camp, where it is laid out for the Clan to pay their respects. Family members, close friends, and the cat’s Mentor or Apprentice gather around the body, keeping vigil through the night. This period of reflection and mourning allows Clanmates to share final words, offer comfort, and honor the life of their fallen companion. This communal gathering provides a time for personal farewells and emotional closure before the formal burial rituals begin.
The Burial Ceremony itself is a solemn and sacred event. The Shaman, with the assistance of the deceased’s loved ones, prepares the resting place for the body by encircling it with a row of carefully placed stones. This arrangement includes two symbolic gates: one for the living to pass through and another for the departed’s soul, signifying the transition between the mortal world and the afterlife. As the final ritual, the Shaman speaks words of blessing and guidance, invoking the favor of StarClan to ensure the departed’s soul is gently guided towards its eternal resting place in the spiritual realm. The ceremony serves both as a final act of respect and as a spiritual send-off, aiming to honor the deceased and facilitate their journey to StarClan.

Meet Vittoria Assad (Cookie Run Sugar Linkage Self Insert)
(A gift for @sam-rexian)
Y/N, a local of Bakerton, is visiting the Natural History museum on a hot sunny day. But not just that- the museum has gotten a new exhibit dedicated to the magical and mysterious culture that is Ancient Egypt. “I think it’s time to head inside.” Y/N replies as they finish up their breakfast and enter the museum, ticket in hand.
As Y/N enters the gorgeous building, they see various citizens of Bakerton looking at exhibits. Y/N then hands over their ticket to the receptionist, and as they enter the museum… they’re jumpscared by a little girl who appears to be in elementary school- wearing what appears to be toilet paper to replicate bandages. “Hahaha! You have awoken the so-called Mummy Queen!” She begins, laughing evilly before going back to her normal demeanor and adjusting her baseball cap. “I’m kidding! Come inside!” She says, taking a picture of what appears to be an unearthed sarcophagus.
“You must really love Egyptian culture, right?” Y/N asks the little girl, who places her phone back in her pocket. “Yeah! My dad’s side of the family comes from the Middle East, which is close to Egypt. More specifically, Turkey. And my first name, Vittoria, is of Italian descent- aka my mom’s side of the family.” She explains, but not before Y/N stops and gazes at a gorgeous amulet beneath a glass case, her “bandages” now taken off.
“Apparently, the super important guys used these to protect their vessel when they crossed over into the afterlife.” Vittoria explains to Y/N. “Hey, Vittoria. What is this?” The latter asks as they point to a diagram that shows someone getting… bandaged? “That is the mummification process. They used special techniques to prepare the body for the journey to the field of reeds. Isn’t it wild? It helped make sure the body was preserved and prepared for the trials ahead of them after death.” She informs.
Suddenly, a voice comes from a nearby display case. “Ooooooo…!” It replies, as if beckoning Y/N and Vittoria over to the display. “What was that?! Is the pharaoh’s curse real?!” Y/N, in a panicked state, exclaims as they look around. “It’s not the curse. I think you’ve found my little buddy!” Vittoria replies as she whistles. The moment she whistles, a small figurine- about the size of an amulet or so, peeks out and hops into the girl’s hands. “Hello!” She says.
“Fettie, I see you’ve met Y/N!” Vittoria says as she places her tiny cookie friend on her shoulder. “Wait. Who’s Fettuccine? I’ve never heard of anyone called that!” Y/N says as they approach Vittoria. “This is Fettuccine! I like to call her Fettie for short. Isn’t she adorable? She’s like this mummy cookie! I met her while I was in my dad’s archaeology study.” She explains further. “Hey, Fettuccine.” Y/N replies in a friendly tone. The two then go off to explore the museum, with Y/N not realizing they’re going on an adventure they never expected…

Fullmetal Alchemist Chapter 40
This chapter has everything a person could want: Maps, ruins, photographs, lore, background gags, and Alex Louis Armstrong.
How much might the story have changed if the Resembool Stationmaster greeted Ed by name while May was standing right behind him?
Armstrong was the one who silenced Ed when he was about to blurt out they were going to do an illegal border crossing. So Armstrong knows why they're there.
The villains are talking about the aftermath of the Super Heist. Gluttony and Envy are definitely upset over Lust's death. Father appears to be upset but quickly gets over it when Wrath says Mustang can open the portal. So yeah, Father doesn't care one of his kids got killed. We also get a shot of his back. All those pipes hook into him.
In the hospital, Mustang is yelling at Hawkeye for how she acted last chapter, and Havoc is yelling at Mustang for giving him burn scars, and Mustang is yelling at Havoc for being ungrateful for saving his life and...
I wonder what those bottles next to Havoc's bed are. Maybe they're urinary catheters?
Roy mentions how suspicious it is no one has tried to kill him and Havoc while they're stuck there, which was what Envy had suggested they do in the previous scene. Alphonse arrives and mentions he's being accompanied by Lan Fan for protection. It's such a minor detail this chapter, but it shows how close Lin is getting with the group that he'd have his bodyguard protect Al.
And we get a map of Central. Hawkeye tried to determine where that door they found was located and drew a circle of the possible locations. We don't get to see a full map of the city unfortunately. The two main things brought up are Lab 2 is within the circle and the President's Estate barely touches it.
By checking some shots of Central HQ in later chapters, I'm pretty sure the President's estate is in the Northeast corner of HQ, meaning Lab 3 is in the Northeast part of Central City.
Despite all the evidence they've found, no one wants to assume King Bradley is part of the conspiracy. But how much of that is because Wrath has done a good job creating an alibi and how much is it because no one wants to consider the possibility the entire government is involved?
We are now at the conclusion of the Super Heist. Roy says Barry was indeed the guy who attacked the penitentiary. So there was either a mistranslation or a mistake in chapter 38 when Roy said the attack had happened on the same day as the Super Heist. The end result is Mustang has discovered the conspiracy that killed Hughes run deep within the government. But it cost Havoc the use of his legs.
I wonder what the average temperature in Amestris is like if Ed never has issues from the heat there. I suppose there's enough shade and trees to make the place tolerable for him. Meanwhile, there's no shade or cool breeze in a desert.
The shot of Ed in the watering hole gave me a chuckle. Even one of the horses is weirded out seeing that.
Ed and Foo share legends about the origins of their Alchemy. In Amestris, a survivor of Cselkcess, called the Philosopher from the East, came to Amestris and brought the science of Alchemy. In Xing, they have the same story, but he's the Philosopher from the West. Foo mentions the Philosopher from the West mixed his knowledge with Xingese techniques to create Xingese Rendanshu. Breda doesn't understand anything they're talking about.
From an archaeological perspective, two countries sharing the same mythology about the origin of a shared practice is pretty cool. Disregarding the actual origins, this could imply Cselkcess was a cultural hub during its peak where scholars traveled to and from spreading research and discoveries to the surrounding nations. Two different cultures saying Cselkcess was destroyed in a single night would lend credence to some travesty happening that made the nation or at least the capital uninhabitable. A reasonable aftermath to the disaster would be refugees from Cselkcess would travel to surrounding nations which would cause them to gain some cultural and genetic similarities. However, aside from the common origin story of Alchemy, we haven't seen much in common between Amestris and Xing culture and phenotypes from what little we've gotten of Xing.
This is such a lovely shot.
And then Ed discovers the outcome of the Heist!
Alex Louis Armstrong is so emotional over their reunion that he takes off his shirt and tries to hug her. Maria Ross is having none of that. I know you're happy Major, but if you kill her here, everything will be for nothing.
Back in Resembool, Hohenheim has returned to find his house burned down. Pinako is looking through a photo album. There's a picture of Ed with his State Alchemist watch in October '11. There's Ed, Al, Wniry, and Den in April '03, meaning Den is at least 11. There's a picture of Den in December '06 with his automail leg, so he's had that for at least 8 years. There's a picture of a baby Al in '00 but we don't see the month.
When Hohenheim visits Pinako, a strong wind blows through the room, turning the pages back. In May '72, Pinako and her husband moved into Resembool. In May '73, they had a son. The last picture is Pinako and Hohenheim in '66. Pinako has known Hohenheim for at least 48 years and he still looks the same.
back
Spoiler Discussion
It's appropriate the first chapter Hohenheim appears is the chapter called "Philosopher from the West." As we piece together details, we gradually learn that Hohenheim is the Philosopher from the West while Father is the Philosopher from the East. I would guess that Amestrisian Alchemy is most similar to Cselkcess Alchemy. Afterall, Father is not one to improve on any technique nor try to discover something new.

Electrical Attunement Solarian (Solarian Alternate Class Feature)
(art by Yuriy Orlov on Artstation)
The solarian discipline is a fascinating take on the idea of mystical sci-fi warriors that tap into an otherworldly force.
For your bog-standard solarian, these forces are the dichotomy of the defining qualities of stars, namely the light, heat, and other forms of radiation they give off (photon), and the gravitational shadow generated by their mass (graviton).
However, other dualistic forces exist in the universe, and some solarians instead focus on electricity, tapping into the duality of energy and resistance, representing how energy can flow between different masses, but also how the properties of said matter can make that energy transfer more difficult.
The result is a solarian that crackles with electricity, rather than glowing with light or rippling with invisible gravitation, making for a terrifying figure on the battlefield.
However, remember that solarians typically embrace balance and understanding, and this remains true for these crackling warriors. Certainly they value the unstoppable power of a massive energy surge, but also the stability that a high-resistance environment demonstrates. One must know when to be calm, and when to unleash one’s power.
Rather than a photon or graviton mode, these warriors instead have an energy mode and resistance mode, the former counts as photon mode, but grants a boost to speed. Meanwhile, resistance mode improves resistance to physical damage, and counts as graviton mode.
Counting as one of the vanilla solarian modes is important, because they can still use various stellar revelations, though the ones that deal fire damage instead deal electricity damage, and the ones that provide cold resistance instead provide electricity resistance.
Furthermore, instead of the familiar supernova and black hole revelations, instead these mystic warriors gain two different zenith revelations, one dealing stronger damage to a single target, while the other creates an energy draining field that saps the charges of batteries and the energy from living flesh, weakening foes.
A simple archetype, but one that provides a fun way to deal an alternate energy type with the abilities of the class. Both can be quite useful, especially if you want to flip-flop between being a mobile combatant and a more tanky one, though naturally you’ll favor one over the other depending on the nature of your manifestation. Maybe you have solar armor or shield and rely on resistance mode to protect you further, or maybe you prefer the solar weapon or flare and dashing about the battlefield on hit and run attacks. Or perhaps you prefer the opposite, wading into melee with the weapon with resistance, and being an impossible mobile target with a shield?
Going back to the difference between this discipline and the traditional solarian, do you suppose that this is an entirely different, if superficially similar technique, a corruption of the original, or a fully-realized cross-discipline? How do traditional solarians feel about these electrodynamic warriors? Do some view them as fellow ascetics on their own path, or something else?
Some scholars into extraplanar elements claim that the electrically-attuned solarian tradition of Kosh-2 has it’s roots in the ancient techniques of aerokineticism. Unfortunately, without actual investigation this is little more than armchair anthropology, so the party has been hired to escort a historian and anthropologist to research the Koshan cultures and discover the true origin of the tradition.
Recent reports of bandit activity have been coming in along the magrails between domes on Vanagesh. The leader of these magrail bandits is Carlon-87:8, better known as Carlon the Thundermind, a powerful contemplative outcast who rains down electrical discharges from afar to support his followers during raids.
Elementally-attuned skeletons went out of style centuries ago as far as necromantic minions go, but the warlord Vrikas discovered that with special implants drilled into the skulls of electrified skeletons, such creatures can be used as relays for his power, making his reach on the battlefield shockingly long.

Maybe I missed something important, but I feel like there are some plot holes now that we know Xaden can read intentions. because how did he not seem to know what was coming at Cordyn? He seemed very surprised when they set the venin on Violet. And why did it take him 9 whole months to figure out the Viscount would never let him take the luminary to Aretia, even if he complied with the marriage contract? Like now I don’t know whether we are supposed to believe the Viscount is just unpredictable, or something cooler is happening and the Viscount somehow knows Xaden is inntinnsic
I find this hard to answer with concretely because there are 3 more books coming and more might be explained later. The thing is, the stuff with the Viscount do feel like plot holes but they could have a really easy explanation. The problem is that that explanation requires RY to actually care about world building and more specifically Poromiel culture--which so far she doesn't seem super interested in.
Because, here's the thing. It's stated that the Gifts gryphons usually give are mind based. If that's the case it'd make whole lot of sense that they culturally they are really good at detecting or reflecting mind based techniques like, say, Xaden's intention reading.
I could totally believe that the Viscount had such good shields that never wavered, that Xaden never could read him with his ability. The Viscount didn't even have to know Xaden had the ability either, since it'd be such second nature to always have those fool proof shields up just to protect himself from other Gifted people in his own home.
This might be an explanation RY uses later. I'm doubtful, given she could have better set this explanation up using Cat or even Xaden explaining Poromiel resistance to other mind work signets, but didn't, but I can't 100% say this won't be brought up later.
It could also be that the Viscount knows he's inntinnsic, but I don't know why that would matter much. If RY later has it that Poromiel is just as anti-Inntinnsic as Navarre I will consider it the stupidest world building choice, that goes against everything we've been told about them so far. If the majority of their powers are mind-based, a good portion of their people would naturally get an inntinnsic ability like Xaden.
So, unless she makes a terrible world building choice, I don't know why the Viscount knowing Xaden is inntinnsic would matter. If the story was from his PoV and, say the Viscount told Cat. I could see him being worried about her telling Violet, but that's about all. Now that Violet knows there's not much reason for the Viscount knowing or not knowing to be a big deal. He wouldn't tell Navarre since they're enemies and even if Xaden doesn't do everything he likes, having him killed would not benefit him at all. And frankly, he could have gotten Xaden killed by making his double crossing Navarre clear--so outing him as inntinnsic isn't even needed to get him killed if he decided Xaden was to much hassle.
#xaden riorson#catriona cordella#fourth wing#iron flame#ask#thanks for the ask!! :)#inntinnsic is so confusing#honestly it should have stayed what it seemed to be in the first book#that being constant mindreading#but i think RY didn't want to make Xaden to much like Edward Cullen#on top of it being way more invasive#so way harder for Violet to forgive

Darksword – The Medici Longsword
Inspired by the Italian greatswords of the 16th century, the Medici, type XVIIIb, Two-Handed Sword is a surprisingly elegant and nimble design. The long, slender blade of well tempered 5160 high carbon steel is rendered a strong thrusting weapon due to the diamond cross-section, allowing it to slip between plates of armor and split rings of mail. Yet the reasonable point-of-balance and extended, leather-wrapped handle create a weapon that flows smoothly through guard, cut, and thrust, not limiting it to a single style of offence. The gracefully curved steel guard and scentstopper pommel complement the simple and straightforward blade, and everything is polished to a mirror sheen. The Medici, named for the Italian political dynasty that were for a time the de facto rulers of Italy, is a beautiful weapon that deserves to be a centrepiece in your home.
Included is a durable wood core scabbard which is tightly bound in leather and completed with a protective steel chape and an integrated leather sword belt.
As the Middle Ages receded, many changes began to occur in Europe’s political landscape. Wars had always redrawn borders and consolidated power into rulers’ hands (or, as the case may be, removed it), but with the advent of the Renaissance a new arena emerged in which humans could do battle. Merchant families – families that had no hereditary titles, yet did manage to create successful enterprises – rose to sudden power, and suddenly the nobles who had enjoyed power and authority unchallenged found themselves outmatched in these new economic feuds. Of these Renaissance merchant families, none wielded more influence than the House of Medici.
In the late 14th century the House of Medici, historically a family that dealt primarily in textiles and wool, established a bank in the Republic of Florence. This bank (the Medici Bank) appeared at precisely the right time to slide into the void left by the sudden and unexpected bankruptcy of the Gran Tavola, at the time one of the largest banks in Europe. This excellent timing catapulted the House of Medici to fame and fortune, and of course considerable political power as well. This was to the great alarm of the existing nobility, who watched with dismay as families of “low” birth suddenly acquired wealth beyond what the nobles themselves had – if, indeed, they had any left at all. The Medici Bank would be a European institution, and became the official bank of the Vatican, bringing Florence (and the Medicis) considerable wealth. This wealth would actually create the Renaissance itself as the House of Medici funded an unprecedented amount of art, music, architecture, and culture. Among other things, the Medici bankrolled the construction of the Florence cathedral as well as St. Peter’s Basilica, and some claimed they funded the invention of opera and the piano. Some of the history of the House of Medici is recounted in the popular Netflix series Medici, which covers some of the family’s history in the mid-15th century. Focusing on brothers Cosimo and Lorenzo de’ Medici, sons of the family patriarch Giovanni de’ Medici, it details the rising political and cultural power of the House of Medici – and the enemies they make along the way. The series is relatively well done, with high production values, gorgeous set design, and excellent acting from the members of House Medici (although for our part, our favourite character isn’t even one of the Medici family – it’s Marco Bello, the no-nonsense servant and bodyguard of Cosimo de’ Medici).
While art and culture (largely funded by the House of Medici) brought about the next stage of human history, developments in arms and armor continued apace. The two-handed greatswords of the Renaissance were, by comparison to their earlier medieval counterparts, marvels of engineering and metallurgy. Advanced techniques and access to better quality steel allowed for longer blades to be made of less metal without losing strength. Centuries of war and preparing for war gave us a wealth of knowledge about what worked on the battlefield – and what didn’t. Advancements in bladesmith skill, built on the generations that came before, informed better and more refined techniques. With the benefit of those centuries of experience and more, we are pleased to bring you the latest generation of Renaissance-inspired swords.
The Darksword Armory Medici Two-Handed Sword is inspired by the spirit of the Renaissance. The inspiration for this piece was the surviving examples of the Oakeshott Type XVIIIb, and to those familiar with this typology the lineage is clear in the long, slender design. The first component that catches the eye is the scentstopper pommel, a hallmark of many Renaissance swords of similar style and an effective counterweight for longer blades. Moving upward, a shapely leather-wrapped grip leads to a slender and simple guard that evokes the image of a soldier’s weapon. The long, double edged blade is stiff and resilient, made all the more robust by the diamond cross section that reinforces its design. Of course, the 5160 steel alloy certain helps – like all our swords this steel provides excellent an excellent foundation for a tough yet pliant weapon.
Italian sword schools – surely among the greatest in Europe – often focused on proper technique and control, and it is here that the Darksword Armory Medici excels. The long grip provides ample room for a two-handed grip and allows for full force to be applied to sweeping blows – or for precise control when aiming for gaps in an opponent’s armor. Handling this sword is a true pleasure, and its blade presence is such that it feels ready to move into the next stance or cut. This sword may not be a cathedral, but it was made in the same spirit of innovation that caused the House of Medici to reshape Europe – we hope you will feel that spirit when it is in your hands

Dragons have a natural hoarding instinct. Nobody's quite sure why. Dragons have very slow lifespans, and are very protective of their offspring, so it's never quite been worked out whether it's a cultural thing, or something to do with their psychology. Whatever the original reason for them being so obsessed with their hoards, not even the oldest dragons remember. Perhaps there was an old cataclysm, or some era of great deprivation. But then, why would they love treasure so much?
In any case, as it turns out, this hoarding instinct can be turned to anything with value, not just your traditional gold and jewels. And although dragons were feared for quite some time, eventually there came men whose greed was greater than their fear, who sought to harness these terrible beasts for their own gain.
You cannot harness a dragon. All of these fortune-builders were swiftly eaten. But their words escaped their mouths, and the dragons heard of new forms of treasure. Libraries. Art museums. Banks and financial centers. Palaces.
Alas, there are less dragons than there are potential hoards. And with their rapid economic development, the greater and older dragons have not abandoned their elder hoards. But they have developed them. Sixty dragon-palaces went up in the 1800s.
And the dragonets? Well, they're quite everywhere. The elders can reach much farther than their wing and claw, and nobody dares cross the beasts who felled the Roman Empire, who turned back the Crusaders at the gates of Jerusalem. And why rear your dragonet in a palace steadily growing quite cramped, when there are ever so many illustrious places for them to make their own? It's enrichment, you see. And there is more value to books than to gold, or numbers in a bank account.
Now, all of the great museums and libraries are guarded by a dragon, one with a keen eye for preservation, an undying, unflagging will to protect. Dragons fly to archaeological sites and overthrow the local government so that the priceless treasures are not disturbed. A vast one occupies most of the New York Stock Exchange, and has learned advanced techniques for splitting its voice and attention, purely to carry out more trades at once. There was only one bleak day when it was roused to leave the Exchange. And after it carried out its defense, it returned.
It is true that a dragon has a hard time reading books. But then there are lenses to magnify them, human hands to open them. And with enough investment, any advance can be quickened. Almost the moment computers were invented, dragons were digitising their books. (The computers did not need to be compact, as even an ENIAC is smaller than a dragon, after all.)
Listen, you’ll be fine. Just don’t forget your library card and DON’T dog-ear the pages.
