fall field crickets (Gryllus pennsylvanicus) are charming heralds of the coming autumn, dressed in golden wing-vests and sporting perfectly round shiny heads.

meanwhile, the tiny juvenile Gryllus hopping around now aren’t their kids—they’re baby spring field crickets (G. veletis), a species that overwinters as a half-grown nymph rather than eggs. the two are very similar in appearance although in my area I think G. veletis has a much darker set of wings. I’ll have to wait a few months to show you one of those!

This giant beautiful man is actually a giant beautiful woman! She's got an ovipositor for laying eggs, which males of course don't have. She looks to me like a fall field cricket :)

It's time for a new story from my old chap Bunny Manders: "The Field of Phillipi".

This time Raffles and Bunny go back to their former school and meet Nipper Nasmyth, former head of school, son of a school trustee, and now one of them. The fact that he's like the opposite of Raffles means that shenanigans are coming.

But we did not think so then, for Nasmyth was unpopular with high and low, and appeared to glory in the fact. A swollen conscience caused him to see and hear even more than was warranted by his position, and his uncompromising nature compelled him to act on whatsoever he heard or saw: a savage custodian of public morals, he had in addition a perverse enthusiasm for lost causes, loved a minority for its own sake, and untenable tenets for theirs.

Nasmyth sounds a bit edgy, but I guess Raffles wasn't so nice at school. He was the popular one and Bunny his loyal fag, but at least he was nice enough with Manders, who thinks he was the best part of his school life.

This could be one of those stories that you found in r/revenge o r/AITA where the bullied kid gets his revenge, of when the popular guy is looking for redemption:

This could be a comedy movie with a bit of romance, but I'm sure that we can expect more than that. It's Raffles the cracksman and adrenaline seeker. Like a debate (ok, that was a surprise for Bunny and me).

I let my eyes follow Raffles round the room before replying. He was waltzing with a master's wife—waltzing as he did everything else. Other couples seemed to melt before them. And the woman on his arm looked a radiant girl.

Bunny is jealous and sad. It's frustrating to think that this could be another chance for Bunny to use the power of crossdressing, but it's hard to deceive their former schoolmates. Bad moment to speak with Nasmyth, who implies Raffles is playing cricket for money like a professional. Sacrilege!

I neither knew nor cared: yet a wretched premonitory fascination held me breathless till I was told. "I'd prefer to see him a thief!" said Nasmyth savagely; and when his eyes were done with me, he turned upon his heel. So that ended that stage of my discomfiture.

I just had a revelation (?) that this chapter could be abbreviated as FIEL, and in Spanish it means faithful, loyal, devoted, true.
