any tips for getting into copywriting?
Learn the basics of copywriting & writing fundamentals/ marketing skills
Study the different types of copywriting (web/banners, email, social, ads, direct mail, sales letters, etc.)
Decide on your niche(s). Study everything you can about the industry, trends, latest news, customer demographics/psychographics, customer behavior, types of lifestyles/preferences they have, how they speak, where they spend the most time (IRL or digitally)
Craft an inspiration folder full of compelling copywriting examples you find when browsing on the web, going through your email, scrolling on social media, billboards, magazines, direct mail, etc.
Practice rewriting these examples with your own flair. Evaluate it, and keep practicing until you're proud of your copy.
Be as concise, clever, and convincing as possible. Keep your tone conversational (write like how you would speak), catchy, simple, and witty. Take out any extraneous or fluff words. Pepper in cultural references, puns, and relatable anecdotes understood by your target audience when relevant to your messaging/CTA
Create a portfolio with these mock-ups or projects done for family/friends (state they're spec work, not client-commissioned samples) or clips from an internship, school work, etc.
Craft a USP for yourself (including your niche, copywriting specialties, and the specific expertise you offer within your broader niche/service offerings that makes you unique)
Create an Upwork profile and share your services on LinkedIn (optimize both of these profiles)
Research local clients and small businesses within your niche. Also, take time to create a list of dream clients. Study their copy, brand voice, and keep tabs on updates regarding these companies' happenings
Learn the art of a cold email/LinkedIn pitch/Upwork proposal. Introduce yourself and your services to your prospect and share with them how you can fulfill a specific need they're seeking out (For local and smaller companies, feel free to offer suggestions. With more established companies, connect the dots as to why your experience/expertise is a great fit for their brand/target audience), and attach your work/link to your LinkedIn profile, website, and any other relevant hub for your professional services & content
Ask for referrals from friends/family to get started. If they're not a relative, get a testimonial to include in your portfolio
Follow up once if you haven't heard back from a prospective client after an initial pitch after a few days
Search for potential gigs on sites like Upwork/ProBlogger/People Per Hour
Once you land a gig, execute to the best of your ability and hand in your work by the deadline (strategies surrounding best business practices is a whole other post, lol)
Gather testimonials from all clients of successful projects. Confirm with clients whether you can use their work in your portfolio if you're unsure
Continue studying copywriting from books, courses, and everyday reading & living
Stay knowledgeable about advancements/updates in your field, keep updated on current events, and culture/social trends, and read a lot in general. Have interesting, multi-faceted conversations with others. Observe what makes people tick & remain engaged in a verbal dialogue or content

WK01 - Creative Practice and Critical Thinking
We have learned that critical thinking is an essential criterion for objectively and logically understanding and judging in order to analyze and evaluate a given situation or information objectively. We also realized that this influences many aspects of everyday life, including the practical side of a designer’s work.
However, relying solely on critical thinking can be a weakness, as it can leave individuals as inflexible and passive intermediaries.
In this week’s CTS B class, we learned how to newly understand the concept of creative practice and how to apply it alongside critical thinking by engaging in activities such as creating new narratives and making graphs about social issues.
Critical thinking is primarily associated with structured and analytical approaches. It involves systematically evaluating and analyzing information. In a structured approach, the problem is clearly defined, relevant information is gathered, and conclusions are drawn through logical reasoning. On the other hand, creative practice is primarily associated with unstructured and generative approaches. It involves generating new ideas and seeking innovative solutions. An unstructured approach thinks freely beyond existing frameworks, utilizing intuition and imagination.
I thought of Steve Jobs' Apple business as an efficient example of this.
The benefits of the interaction between critical thinking and creative practice are being applied in many areas. Recently, I realized that the fundamental values of UX design often stem from the interaction between critical thinking and creative practice.
As a growing designer, I believe that the interaction between these two approaches will be a powerful force against the rapid advancement of AI technology. To foster this, we must continuously study and balance both critical thinking and creative practice.

"...what i have learned over time is that DRIVING AHEAD with this much velocity at all times is not always good for me. it is not good for the art and it is not good for myself.
"so PRACTICE i have learned is two parts. first is that i try to keep my internal drive STEADY but not full on. instead of pushing throttle of my trot at one hundred percent the whole time just pulling it back to seventy five or eighty percent can be very helpful. find a CRUISING ALTITUDE that works for you and realize that if you really want to be productive in your way then you are going to get more done going 75 for keeps rather than 100 percent and hurting yourself."
Chuck Tingle in this Lithub interview
I think I have been moving towards this approach, but seeing it spelled out like that really helped shed the "I should be working on x" -guilt vibes.

Connecting Practice with Society
Art and design are not only a discipline but also a medium to express and influence society.
Our short film project in class is a great example. We use art and design techniques, including photography, typography, music, and visual effects, to present our perspectives and reflect on social issues.
In the process of group cooperation, we chose the topic of environmental health and personal quality. We collect a lot of information and then use images to convey our message. In the process, I also learned the importance of teamwork, as everyone has different insights and skills, which all have a positive impact on the final product. We discussed how to use visual messages to arouse the audience's attention to environmental issues, and learned to communicate concerns about social issues in creative ways.
Connecting Individual and Societal Change. Supporting the inner well-being of change makers can boost capacity for innovation and collaboration, and ultimately lead to more effective solutions to social and environmental challenges
As a designer, I hope that my works are not only creative, but also able to connect with society, convey information, and trigger thinking. This might mean choosing a specific theme, focusing on social issues, or using sustainable materials. I believe design can improve people's lives and solve social problems. Therefore, I strive to incorporate this belief into my practice.
The process of creating this short film made me realize that visual media can be a powerful communication tool. We learned how to use visual stories to convey an important social message, and also realized the connection and impact that practice can have on society.

"When the Meloetta Sings..." (PMD Script)
What does Klonoa and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon have in common? Teary farewells, when all is said and done... If you dare have the sorrows combine, then bravely venture into the "keep reading" and see the overall script for a future practice idea and "break" piece.
Synopsis:
It’s time once again for the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon staple: the humans must return to home, despite the sorrow involved. It’s no different for the now-shiny-eevee, Cio, and the now-riolu, Claire. Just as the ending of Klonoa: Door to Phantomile played out: Claire nor Cio want to go to their respective homes and separate, all while Melody sings the mythical “Song of Restoration,” to undo the damage all the Ultra Beasts caused. Claire will be sent back alongside Solgaleo, Cio alongside Lunala, through an Ultra Space wormhole that’ll return them to their own realms. Nearby, the other pokemon they’ve befriended will stand by, not enjoying the show, but knowing it’s necessary to maintain the realm’s balance: rejecting all those who did not belong.
Script:
Cio: So, what now, Gray? With all the Ultra Beasts and those two going back home, what should Claire and I do? I think we’re ready to go out and finally be our own rescue organization, right, man?
**The shiny Thievul says nothing, but has a grim look on his face.**
Cio: ?... Gray…?
*Claire also seems concerned*
Grayson: … No, what happens next is… *he sighs* You both return to your actual homes…
*The riolu and eevee look at each other.*
Cio: Gray, what’re you talking about, man: you still want us to stay at the base…? *he realizes something is wrong* Hey man, what’s wrong?
Grayson: … Now that Melody will undo everything, It’s time you both knew the truth: you’re not actually pokemon of this world. You’re not even pokemon, in general…
*Claire and Cio look uneasy: Claire’s doing her signature “paws-up” pose, while Cio is sweating*
Cio: You’re not making sense, man… What’s going on?
Grayson: I’m sharing the truth, that’s what. You’re humans: creatures similar to our kind, but more adept to ingenuity and other skills that rely on intellect over powers.
Cio: “Humans”...? Like those “alien life forms” Gustel always talked about, like all the other “alternate world” stuff?
Claire: !!... (I think I remember Gustel’s research about those kinda things, too…! He said that in some worlds, there exist things that don’t in ours… He even said there could exist some worlds, where even pokemon aren’t real…)
Grayson: You two only came here, by chance, just as that “lunala” and “solgaleo” did. I’m assuming the wormholes which brought you here altered your forms, somehow, as it likely wouldn’t have been possible to enter here otherwise. Now, it’s time for you to leave through those very portals and return to the worlds you rightfully belong in.
Cio: This… This’s some kind of joke, right? Grayson, I remember everything: growing up here, how you inspired me to start my own rescue team organization…! How can I have memories like that, if I wasn’t here my entire life?!
Claire: (I-I remember stuff, too…! All the training with Raifu, painting with Skyler and learning to use special attacks…)
Cio: Come on, man, I dunno what you’re doing, but it’s not funny…!
Grayson: Cio, for the time you’ve known me-- as short as it may have actually been --do you really know me to be someone for such a troubling and discomforting “joke”: to admit to you… *he pauses and grimaces* that it was all a lie? Your memories are false fabrications, planted into you two, so you’d stay with us and for other important reasons. The last thing we needed were more alien life forms roaming around, unsupervised, despite how much of a paler threat you’d be…
Cio: So, you… You were never really trying to just “keep us safe”...? Th-That “overprotective brother” stuff…?
Grayson: Well, in a sense we had: it wouldn’t exactly be safe for yourselves, if you were allowed to roam freely in unfamiliar terrain.
Claire: … (But… But… Does that mean they never really cared about us…? W-What if they only “cared” ‘cause we could’ve caused trouble…?)
Cio: S-So what, man: we’ve just secretly been prisoners this whole time?! Y-You even got s-some free labor o-o-out of us!!
Grayson: Please, it was for your own good…
*Show everyone coming across the fallen Claire and Cio, as Lunatala and Solgaleo more consciously flee the wormholes.*
… Do you have any idea how terrifying it’d be: living with the knowledge you’re stuck in a world that you don’t belong to, unaware if you’ll ever again see the family and life you were stolen from?
*Show the soon-named Hypno over the two, familiarizing himself with the once-humans’ memories and altering them*
… It was far crueler to leave your minds untouched, than have Trance assist us in planting new memories and altering your sense of reality.
*Return to the present scene*
Cio: … Y-You’re lying, man… I dunno why, but you’re lying! You’ve gotta be!!
Claire: … (It’s gotta be true… Grayson would never say something that’s mean, like scaring us about everything being fake… So, it must’ve all been fake…)
*Claire starts crying*
Cio: H-Hey, Buddy…! *he places a paw on her arm* C’mon, man, i-it’s not real, h-he’s just saying stuff…!!
Grayson: Cio, Claire, you’d best prepare yourselves… Melody’s about to sing.
*The Meloetta takes her position on the cliff’s edge, vocalizing the proper notes that open all the wormholes, which absorb their respective Ultra Beast. Soon enough, Claire and Cio notice theirs opening, when their bodies suddenly react to a strong gust sucking them away. Lunala and Solgaleo leave more willingly.*
Cio: No, NO…! I’M NOT GOING ANYWHERE!!
Claire: !!! (At least let me and Cio stay together!!! HE’S MY BEST FRIEND!!)
*The two take paws, gripping on for dear life, as the selective gusts threaten to finally pull the “floating” duo apart. They give each other one final look in the eyes, until they can hold on no longer and fly into their respective wormholes.*
Cio: CLAIRE…!!
Claire: C’O…!!
*The wormholes then disappear and Melody concludes her song. A final glimpse is of Grayson, as he wipes his eyes, before re-applying his shades.*
[End]

This may not resonate with everyone, and it's certainly not the only way to go about doing creative stuff. But as an incredibly impatient ADHDer with debilitating RSD and highly unreliable interests... If you've ever at some point thought to yourself,
"If my creative output is just... gonna suck for the foreseeable time, and I'm likely to lose interest before I get better at it... What's the fucking point? I'll just feel bad about myself and it'll amount to nothing."
And you've found that thought paralyzing with regards to making art or trying new creative stuff... Here's a realization that has genuinely helped me. You are here right now. On the internet. Seen over an entire lifetime, you're probably spending more than the 10.000 hours it'd take to be any good at a creative skill just scrolling and shitposting. And that's perfectly fine! This is not a "get off the internet and touch grass" post. Just... Realize how much time you put into things in life that genuinely amount to nothing. How much of life is just random distraction and filler. And you don't have any qualms or big feelings about all of that time spent! That's the whole point! That's the magic of it! It's just stuff to take your mind off life! We have this idea that our creative output is special, that it should amount to something. But... why the fuck should it?
Treat your creativity like filler.
As in, treat it like just another thing you do to pass the time. Treat it like scrolling on Tumblr, like a YouTube clickhole, like a game you are trying because it looked funny on a stream, like aimlessly checking all the discords you're in for new memes and random conversation. You know, treat it like stuff you do anyway. Let go of the idea that your creative output should be anything, or make you feel any particular way, or meet any standards of quality or meaningfulness or improvement or even enjoyment. It's genuinely fine if all it does is pass the time. I promise, you'll find yourself crafting and drawing and writing so much more when you present it to yourself as just another value-neutral time wasting option, rather than a Big Effortful Pursuit Of Meaning And Excellence That You Care About A Lot.

A couple years ago I asked a bunch of people on Twitter how they conceptualized their relationship to creativity. The answers were really varied, so I tried to group them into affinity quadrants and draw a little chart. I'm sure there are a zillion other ways to think about it, but I like remembering that making stuff is a moving target. It falls into all these categories for me at different times.
