meet gamma! he's a palm-sized green korbat plushie (from neopets), designed, patterned, and sewn by me.
#plushblr#safeplush#neotag#neopets#korbat#fun fact: gamma was made because i had a dream about a tiny korbat plushie like this#i took a few creative liberties to fill in gaps in my memory (my visual imagination is fuzzy at best)#but i tried to stay as true to the dream as possible#i don't plan on making more of these (the tail and wings were a pain) but i can share the pattern if anyone else wants to make one!#plush: gamma#sewn by me

Also I realize that the answer is probably just reading enough period sources but as a linguist I really do need to pick Patrick O'Brian's brain about where in the world he got his different speech patterns from
#mostly just fascinated because they are mostly not based on modern speech patterns#and maximum respect to him for that period pieces should be in period language and that includes different sociolects/dialects#but i'm just really really interested what he took them from. like i want to read the source material#also as someone who knows virtually nothing about irish english i didn't notice most of stephen's irish speech patterns#until after reading the golden ocean which makes them much more obvious#but i'm curious if (1) they're recognizably modern and/or period irish and (2) what the irish people here think of them#generally inclined to trust him on it because it's unexpected enough that i feel like it's probably at least slightly based on sources#i just have no frame of reference for it#anyways when i say that i need to talk to patrick o'brian you have to understand that this would be minimum 50% of the conversation#the other 50% would be asking him about the catalan references because i am nothing if not predictable#perce rambles#aubreyad#The Creative Endeavor and other aubreyad nonsense

I'm once again hemming and hawing about if I have enough fabric to sew a linen shirt loosely inspired by Bernadette Banner's pirate/Mr Darcy shirt pattern.
#I have 3 m of 150 cm wide fabric#and am right in the middle of the size range that calls for 5 m of *either* 110 cm or 130 cm wide fabric#I feel like I could probably lay pattern pieces out creatively but also... scary#but like I *do* want to fucking sew something now that I'm finished my last eons long sewing project so like...#maybe I just make a mock up and judge from there#art and craft#sewing

my assignments have got to stop coming with the instructions to be creative because i have NO limits on the subject matter I will write about. I called the American College system the AntiChrist and said I'd sell my soul for my goals on my college applications. I have a concerning obsession with eyeballs. I will invoke fields of study only tangentially related and combine them into the most nonsensical and yet totally functional metaphors, god so help me.
#i am applying to a scholarship by saying my ideal career after college is cult leader#let's all be creative!#or not#not to self diagnose but i always wondered if i had adhd#and the extreme pattern forming as a result of that making me both very creative and very crazy sounding

Fig and apple pie with pecan-cardamom crust. The figs and the apples were both foraged, which is always fun. Smells super good !
It was supposed to be in a pie tin, but I had 3/4 of a pound of figs rather than the half pound the recipe called for. And then needing to scale the recipe complicated the already confusing situation of reading while dyslexic. So I largely gave up on reading, and this is more inspired by the recipe than anything else, but here it is nonetheless: Fig, Apple, and Walnut Tarts. Anyway, it ended up too big to fit in a pie tin, hence the cobbler dish.
#havent had any due to classic long covid 'food has an almost imperceptible amount flavor if any at all'#but i can currently smell things so id rather juat smell it tbh#my roommates were at least eating it so it seems to be edible :D#cooking#baking#like there are a million competing reasons i dont and cant follow recipes (or patterns or any other written/illustrated steps)#but today it was Cant Read and Confusing All Three Recipes I Looked At With Each Other And Making An Amalgamation On Accident#along with Missing Ingredients and Philosophical Dispute With Author#(egg yolk in the crust and then she never uses the white. which i do not agree with at all#chekhovs egg--if part of an egg is used in a recipe then so too does the other part of the egg. get creative.#in this case i put it in the topping as it was already described as supposed to be crispy so...#it probably could have done with half a white honestly but it did turn out crispy)#i did also use a little food coloring. not proud of it but it was a very unappealing shade of green that lacked contrast with the crust#so *shrug*

Baffled by how the general perception of programming is that it's not a creative hobby, as if it doesn't involve making countless decisions based on your vision for the finished product just the same as any other art form >:U
When you live on computers like so many of us do, programming is literally bending the fabric of reality. It's MAGIC! You can do LITERALLY ANYTHING* with it!!! I cannot stress enough how much the world opens up when you realize what sorts of things you can write or use programs to do. Sure, you can make tools that are generally practical (and yeah, those can be really nice), but you can also make things that are really only useful to you, or not useful at all and just fun! It's not like you're limited to only making boring things you'll never use, no matter how dull and confusing online programming tutorials make the process seem.
((* Except tell when a program will run forever. You can't do that. You can do most other things though!!))
And even when you only have one specific thing you want to do, there are as many ways to implement it as there are people to give it a go. While there are generally accepted "good ways" of doing certain things, really, there are no hard and fast rules. If you write something that does what it needs to do, it's usually fine no matter how you accomplish it. I always end up putting a lot of myself into programs I write, and I imagine it's the same for other people. Programming is EXTREMELY creative, and artistic, and fun!!!
For such a popular thing, the public perception of it as a hobby is horrible, and I think that's just a shame. Not only is it not too hard for most people to learn (the usual worry), it's ALSO not boring (or for professionals only, for that matter)! Programming as an artistic hobby deserves better rep fr
#hunny rambles#programming is probably my most creative hobby tbh#I knit and I draw and I write sometimes#but I mostly only knit from patterns and draw the same few things and write short simple scenarios#not to knock any of those things ofc. theyre obviously creative too#but i usually put WAY more consideration into programs i write than something im knitting from directions#and im always really proud of the products :D#this post has been sponsored by me spending hours thinking over how I want my personal site im making to look and act#if this isnt the kind of suffering that only comes with making art idk what is

So this one is another I don't have a ton of good progress photos on, as I initially threw it together in a MAJOR hurry, with an impending international flight the next day, not to mention most of the packing I hadn't finished yet!
Y'see, normally I'm used to being easily 85 to 90% packed before such a big trip, so I kinda autopiloted into going "oh, I don't have a neck pillow! Gonna need one of those! Even despite the chaos, to be honest, it was quite a fun process! I'd never done drop patterning before, and it was fascinating to see the difference in my initial idea of what the pattern pieces looked like, in comparison to what came out after a bit of clever draping and tracing, let alone seeing how I basically managed to pirate my partner's neck pillow, haha!
I haven't done a lot of stuffed work before, though, so I don't quite have down how to get the relative density of something like a pillow down pat, even if I was using stuffing from an old set of pillows I was loath to discard. Perhaps (definitely) as a result of that, I had to throw a patch onto the split it gained smack dab in the middle! Made for something to do on the train after the flight, and I luckily had the presence of mind to bring along some of the scraps of the material I made the pillow out of. Is it a 4-h project? nah, I could have straightened out some of those stitches better! but it works, and quite well, I might add. I even managed to get my shorts (whose various mends we've seen around here before) surviving through all the walking I had to do over there!
#sewing#patterning#mending#reuse#creative reuse#solarpunk#ecopunk#make your own stuff#queue.queue#a thousand words#nesterian lifestylings#listen I could tag this more thoroughly but I mostly just wanted to show off this neck pillow#it's in such a fun pattern! and I made it myself! in a few hours!#I'm proud of how it came out considering how much rushing I did doing it!

I bought this “Guess how much I love you” panel and used a pattern from @villarosadesigns to make this adorable EASY baby quilt. The photos don’t really do it justice, it’s really adorable in person! Bought all the fabrics at @creativepassionsretreat quilt shop. This was a simple quilt but it turned out so well!! I found the exact same gray with the bunnies in the big squares in flannel to use for the back.

not saying the writing is perfect in all facets, but what exactly did the writers do that was so bad that some of you write off anything good they do to be the result of pure coincidence?
I get duffer atheists in my notes every time I point out some little characterization/set detail. do you think these characters just evolved onto your screen on their own without anybody planning and writing them? "ohh could this be on purpose?? I know they didn't plan this" why not? remind me why are we so sure the writers of one of the most successful shows of the decade are completely inept?
#some of you give me (some rando blog) credit for the observations I make and explicitly NOT the writers who made them happen#it boggles me man#I sound pissed in this post but I'm not I'm just confused#if some of yall were mike you'd unroll that painting and be like#omg will... i don't know if you know this but... these 4 people you painted.... they look a lot like our friend group... omg...#I know it was just an accident buddy but... it makes me wonder if subconsciously... u were thinking of us.....#I'm so creative for interpreting this pattern from the chaos... my brain is so large.... credit 2 me... painting by mike wheeler.... :}

After 2 1/2 months, I'm finally done! I'm sorry, Mr. Redacted, but merch is expensive, and thread is cheap. I also like being able to control how subtle a reference I'm making, and some of your merch doesn't fit that vibe. This is about 3 in x 4.5 in across, centered over the left breast of a jacket I've decorated previously.
[Photo ID: cross stitch image of a constellation, the letter "Epsilon" underneath one of the stars, and a large needle & thread symbol /end ID]
(pleaee ignore the fluff. I don't have a lint roller)
I don't blame you if you don't immediately get the reference; constellations can be hard to identify. This one in particular is Carina, and the focus is on a particular star that makes up the constellation, Epsilon Carinae (that's the one above the fancy E)
[Photo ID: image of the constellation Carina matching the first image, with the names of the stars labeled /end ID]
The common name for that particular star, however, ought to be familiar (and not exactly surprising).
It's named Avior.
#i was thinking my thoughts and came up with this#redacted asmr#redacted avior#you would not believe how much blood and tears this took#or maybe you would. cross stitch and embroidery is a vicious hobby#it'll be a minute before I'm willing to take on another project like this#but i might not be opposed to showing the process of how i make my own patterns at some point#im sorry I messed up the spacing for Canopus too#but if I kept the actual resolution and dimensions#that star would literally be in my armpit. I'm calling it “creative license”

Still on my dragon bs... Not sure what to do with this still, cause it will likely end up too big for my intended purposes. But I think it can double as a flat wing pattern for the dragon amigurumi I've been brainstorming for the past weeks if this current wip doesn't work out 👀
#Ignore the loose yarn ends#I'm not weaving them in yet bc I might need to unravel pieces of this to reverse engineer the pattern#I want to make a mirrored wing and I'm already shuddering at the thought lol#Thyandra's crocheting adventures#Sorry for all the crochet posting lately. I know it's annoying for those of you who don't care about it#I'm just in the middle of a creative buzz#Feel free to blacklist my crochet tag or unfollow if this is too much spam!
