“not only is this truly my favorite lizard, but this lizard is responsible for giving me the nickname Coyote. Now the way that happened is when I was a little kid, my mom used to bring me out here to the Sonoran desert and I would look for these lizards. However, because of their camouflage, they’re difficult to find. Now, one of their main predators is the Roadrunner. So what I would do is search for Roadrunners. I would follow these Roadrunners hoping that they would lead me to the horned lizards. My mom would watch me doing this and would say to herself, ‘you know what you’re kinda like? You’re kinda like Wile E. Coyote from the Warner Bros. cartoon.’ And then she started calling me Coyote. So this little lizard, the Regal Horned Lizard, is responsible for giving me the nickname Coyote.”

So something funny happened last time I played dwarf fortress, figured I’d share.

So I’m setting up a fort, trying out a new central staircase type design, and I see our fisherdwarf (one of the starting seven), having a meeting with the expedition leader to air her grievances. Now, I’d not bothered preparing carefully, so I was handed the default seven dwarves the game gives you. The fisherdwarf in this set also comes with decent fighting ability, and it just so happened that this particular dwarf also had a need to get into fights. “Oh, perfect!” I thought, “You know, I really should get around to setting up a defensive militia right now, shouldn’t I?”. So I made that dwarf the militia commander, gave her a nickname to help keep track of her better, and started queuing up weapons and armour in the forges.

…not five seconds later, I found her out in a field, shirtless, and being bitten to death by a coyote. I of course wanted to know why the heck Urist McBadass over here decided it was a good idea to try and wrestle a coyote while half naked, so I checked the combat logs. That explained the lack of clothes (her dress got torn in the fight), but it didn’t explain what she was doing there in the first place. I shrugged and started getting the stonemasons to make some coffins before the body rotted.

That’s not where the story ends however, as I decided that in order to make the tombs in my fort extra fancy, I would make each one have both a coffin, and a gravestone. You only need one of those two, but I figured I’d make it aesthetically pleasing.

Now, for those of you who don’t play dwarf fortress, when you get a memorial slab engraved, it generates a short blurb about the deceased (name, cause of death, any important life events, etc.). In this particular case (and to paraphrase), it read:

"In memory of Urist McBadass, killed by a Coyote in the year 101. Remembered as a lover of coyotes."

I think I was then able to piece together what probably happened...

Moral of the story: leave wild animals alone, kids; they aren't your pets.

ok so imma try to explain some character controller stuff for video games

so first off you don't want to move them a set amount of time per frame, as then if you lag your character moves really slowly, this is especially bad if you have a multiplayer game where you can play with other people. what you should do instead is use something called delta time, which is the time since the last frame. Multiplying the player's move speed by this ensures they move the same speed.

if you're making a platformer there are quite a few qol features that should be included if you dont want players to feel their inputs are being 'eaten' by the computer. The first and most discussed one is coyote time, where you can jump for a little bit after walking off a platform (called coyote time because of Wylie Coyote, specifically the gag where he would walk off a cliff, not realize it, and only fall once he realized he was in midair)

the second thing is called 'jump queuing' which stores jump inputs from when you are midair for a little bit, so if you press jump right before landing you still jump once you land.
