Saying this as both an Outlast and Mouthwashing lover.

A lot of people in the Mouthwashing fandom would not be able to handle it in the Outlast fandom, especially when it comes to liking characters.

Especially on tik tok, it seems the Mouthwashing fandom is so strict with what it does and doesn't allow, like I hate Jimmy as much as the next guy, but it's not a crime for someone to draw him or include him in the cast. He's an IMPORTANT part of the plot. The tik tok fandom also seems to say Mouthwashing shouldn't have a fandom point blank period because it's "too deeply thought out" and fanfics, ocs, and such shouldn't exist because it "ruins the story".

Meanwhile Outlast is a horrific, well thought out game with several installments, and the fandom is (mostly) chill. Like it's abundantly clear these guys aren't good people or even conventionally attractive to most people, yet they're adored and people make silly jokes of them all the time and make tons of fanfics, aus, and ocs. Hell, 90% if the fandom's favorite or second favorite dude is a guy who cuts people's dicks off and then kills them.

This isn't meant to say you can't have boundaries or things you like/dislike, but much of the Mouthwashing fandom overpolicies the fandom, and some even say Mouthwashing shouldn't have a fandom period because it's "too serious and dark" while Outlast is serious and dark yet no one cares what you do in the fandom.

Both are horror games with great stories.

Both produce gorgeous fanart and deep theories, and it's clear love is put into several art pieces and theories.

Difference is, a majority of one fandom can't handle fandom ACTING like fandom.

Mini edit: Honestly this could be about fandom as a whole nowadays but given they're both horror games, albeit different types, with fan bases, that I love, I decided to compare them. Lets try to be civil please in discussion.

Edit 2: Okay, this got a lot more attention than I thought. TO AGAIN CLARIFY, its okay to have boundaries and personal reasons you may not like a character but like another. Same goes for certain aspects of fandom culture. But there's also the aspect of "block/scroll and move on". Frankly, my examples from Mouthwashing were things I have personally seen that you may not have, hence why some of you may be confused.

Leland Coyle

Night habits: Leland sleeps deeply, hard as a rock but he suffers from intense dreams/nightmares that cause him to move a lot in bed.

Behavior: Leland loves to sleep with his body pressed against yours, preferably in a hug with him almost crushing you in his arms. He wants to make sure you don't go anywhere and that nothing bad happens to you.

Sounds: Leland snores softly but with a serious tone.

"With you here, I won't have any nightmares."

Mother Gooseberry

Nocturnal Habits: Mother Gooseberry sleeps gracefully and almost motionlessly.

Behaviour: Before bed, Mother Gooseberry likes to sing some children's bedtime music, she also likes to gently stroke your hair.

Sounds: Mother Gooseberry doesn't snore and barely makes any sounds. (Sometimes you have to make sure she is actually breathing).

Franco Barbi

Night Habits: Franco is a light sleeper, he can wake up with any small noise. He always makes sure to stay alert even with his eyes closed. He suffers from insomnia. (Poor baby!)

Behavior: He loves to lie down with his body very close to yours so he can relax and get some rest. He will always put your safety over his sleep.

Sounds: Franco may end up mumbling from time to time in his sleep, he also suffers from constant nightmares which makes him wake up scared.

Dr. Esterman

Night Habits: Esterman is used to always sleeping very late due to his work. He usually checks that everything is in perfect order before putting his head on a pillow.

Behavior: Esterman likes to watch you sleeping, he admires every little detail of you as you sleep deeply before finally falling asleep. He likes to sleep apart out of respect for his space.

Sounds: Esterman breathes heavily, you can hear it sometimes.

The Night Hunter

Nocturnal Habits: He suffers from his extremely light sleep. He is 100% always on alert. Tends to wake up even without there being any sound or movement but tries to go back to sleep soon after making sure everything is ok.

Behavior: He stays close to you while sleeping long enough for you to feel his body heat. He sometimes moves in his sleep and gets up to patrol and then comes back.

Sounds: Releases some low growls while dreaming or having nightmares.

Nocturnal Habits: Sleeps deeply, his entire body may be as hard as stone.

Behavior: Chris prefers to sleep with some form of physical contact with you, preferably in a position where he can protect you.

Sounds: He snores loudly like a noisy bear.

Night Habits: Sleeps well and deeply but may occasionally wake up just to whisper softly "I love you."

Behavior: He wraps you deeply in his arms with a tight, warm hug. He will never sleep any other way. (He is VERY afraid of you running away from him...).

Sounds: Has deep, heavy breathing.

Richard Tranger

Night Habits: Richard sleeps for a short time but intensely. He wakes up with a lot of energy.

Behavior: Richard is restless and moves several times in bed, changing positions frequently but always finding a way to touch you.

Sounds: Sometimes murmuring some disconnected words.

Frank Manera

Night Habits: Frank is a heavy sleeper. Says disturbing things in your sleep.

Behavior: Loves to keep you close, will sleep close to you with their bodies almost forming one. He loves feeling the heat of your body.

Sounds: It is very noisy. Snores loudly.

Outlast Characters On Your Birthday

It's my 23rd birthday today so I thought I'd release something for everybody! Enjoy 🥳🎂🍰 Have a slice on me! [Also, a debate: best flavour of cake? Tuxedo and strawberry shortcake always take the cake for me, wink wink]

Miles and Waylon both throw you a party; the only difference is Miles includes alcohol [assuming you're of age] and Waylon prefers there be sweets and milkshakes. Miles will throw you a surprise party whereas Waylon will ask you what you'd like at your party. Guests, decorations...all up to you.

Miles gives you something comedic or something useful, like a harmonica or a comb with a blade in it. Never know when you have to comb and jab, y'know?

Waylon prefers wholesome things. You know how he is. Or self defense gear.

Jeremy, the bastard, goes all out for it; if you want, he'll bring you to Murkoff and the entire staff can celebrate. Hell, the variants, too! How funny would it be to experiment on variants wearing party hats?? [Not...very funny, but Jeremy has an odd sense of humour.] Because Richard and Jeremy are close, Richard gets you a present. What's inside is up to you. [It may be phallic or just a new wallet or something.]

Trager's not a party kind of feller, so he'll throw you a small party in his office and tell you "me not cutting your fingers off is a gift, sweetheart".

Just kidding, he buys you anything you ask for. He's not fond of surprises, so he'll straight up just go to you and ask you, outright, what you'd like. He gets you two shirts: his says "I love to finger paint" and your shirt says "I'm paint".

He thinks he's funny, please just laugh and get it over with.

Chris is a total sweetiepie and he makes the cake himself [if he's able]. He remembers the subtle details of your interests and he'll know exactly what to get you. One of which being matching sweaters with cats and dogs on them.

Eddie is a master of party throwing and this is a hill I'll die on; he'll buy wine, cheese, gifts and toss in some handmade works of his. He loves to bake, and despite a few failures - and a hole in the wall - he's more than happy to celebrate your day of birth by making you a homemade cake!

Walrider steals a guy, steals a car, drives to Walmart and brings you just about any expensive gift he can grab. You didn't NEED an airfryer, but...the effort he put into his theft was too much to ignore. He purrs when you put chicken strips inside of your new airfryer.

Knoth gives you a bible about himself and tells you stories about how big his penis is. That's...that's as much as you're going to get. I see why Val left. He'll also ask you to convert, seeing as how "God is your birthday gift". No thanks.

Marta's fond of flowers, so expect a bouquet as well as a rosary. She's not as forceful as Knoth is [unless directly told to be], so the rosary is moreso a suggestion to convert.

Val surprises you with heretics, fire, bodies and sex. And more sex. And sex 24/7 7 days a week, no holiday breaks. Jokes aside - or are they jokes? - they'll ask a Heretic to steal something from Knoth to give to you. That, or they'll deceive a delivery boy into getting you something from the outside world. It might be just a small Snickers bar or a bottle of penicillin, but it still means a lot. Val can't really bake considering their circumstances, but they'll try and get you something sweet if all else fails. Coyle thinks his loyalty and his protection of you is a gift, there's no party necessary. That's all you can ask for, right? But he'll grumble about how "greed like yours is what collapses a respectful nation" and try to get you something. Expect something like a necklace or handcuffs. Maybe he'll even set up a few mannequins in a circle to celebrate your special day with cop hats in place of party hats.

Gooseberry is obsessed with gift giving and party throwing, so the entire theme park is completely yours to enjoy for one trial. No ex-pops, just her, you and Dr Futterman. Futterman is just glad you're not ruining his daughter's time as she works away in the Root Canal. Franco loves parties, especially if he throws them! Mainly because his parties are full of sex, booze, drugs and murder. But for you, doll? He'll make an exception...he'll ask the staff to make you a cake and serve it to you himself. Easterman makes sure you're given a day to yourself. Cake, gifts and naps. What more can you ask for? He can't show favouritism, letting you out would be unfair to the other patients, but this is enough.
