It was a delightfully ordinary, Wednesday evening at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The typical mist lay heavy on the stone foundations of the castle, seeping through the cracks of doors and rotten window frames, like a chilling, wet breeze. The Gryffindor common room was set south of the grand building, thick but lively layers of dust coating the picture frames, the books and embedded in the regal rugs. Despite the vast number of students that had passed to and from these walls, it, like its location, seemed to stay recognisably untouched. Wine red curtains draped over the clouded, antique windows, like they had always been, the decor-orientated fireplace roared invitingly, as it had always done. It was nearly a guarantee that every child of the lion house would look upon the common room just as every other had done, and would do so forth. So similar in fact that those who occupied the creaky beds in the dorms just a staircase above or below, could enthuse about it's appearance, it's welcome and it's sense of home, to any other Gryffindor, whether them be from two, or ten years ago.

It was this familiarity, and this warmth, that created the brave camaraderie of the Gryffindors.

Currently inhabiting this exact setting, there resided a certain batch of fascinating students, one draped across the velvet settee, one fidgeting, bouncing his leg, staring into the fireplace, one lay covering the musty, worn floorboards, and lastly, one rushing down the echoing staircase with a pitter patter.

"Guys, guys!", she bellowed into the homely room, scurrying as she descended, until finally reaching the middle of the gathered group.

The boy lounging on the soft furnishings reluctantly sat up with a groan, his hands propping himself up behind him, one leg stretched out, the other bent over the armrest. His dark blue eyes now on the girl, his face as beautifully pale and freckly as ever. This was Ron, commonly recognised due to his outstandingly red hair, his Weasley last name, and of course his vintage-looking robes.

"Hff, what you shouting for?", Ron retorted at the dramatic entrance.

The girl, y/n, ignored him, stretching her sight over to the others, whom one of which had only just broken his gaze from the dancing flames.

"Hmm?", the other boy questioned, only acknowledging her arrival thanks to Ron's lazy words. This was Harry, though who didn't know that? The one thing Harry Potter was not, was unestablished, everyone and anyone knew him. His leg had ceased to bounce now, sat civily next to the red head, hands clasped in his lap, not before chewing his nails in thought. A somewhat handsome boy he was, piercing, green eyes, thick, dark eyebrows outlining them, and most definitely his circular glasses that framed them both.

"Hermione!", y/n urged hurriedly to the girl still lay across the floor, scattered in leather-bound books, the last of the group to give her their attention. Her full, wavy hair flowing down her back characteristically, it's caramel colour melting into the rouge rug harmoniously. Casting her natural beauty over her shoulder, she begrudgingly removed her eyes from the tea stained pages and landed them on y/n, brows furrowed.

"Yes?", Hermione answered proceeding an irritated sigh.

Now that she'd successfully gained their observation, she continued, "You'll never guess what I just heard", elongating the latter in a bothersome, high pitched song.

"What is it now? More gossip I suppose", noted Harry, looking as uninterested as the other two. It wasn't typical that her friends were this well, unfriendly, but having been a long day, they were pleased to let it come to an end, gasping for sleep. Y/n however felt differently,

"Look, it's not my fault if I happen to... overhear a few things, is it!?", she asserted, rolling her eyes.

"It is highly inappropriate to be listening in on a private conversation, and especially so, if you're then going to go telling everyo-", Hermione's lecture was cut off.

"Ugh, it's not even a big deal, I just heard Lavender chatting to Romilda, about... you", she spun round and pointed straight at Ron, trying to conceal a grin. Failing this, she burst out laughing, much to Ron's panic, Harry's interest, and Hermione's displeasure.

"W-what? What was she saying...", he trailed off, his voice shaking with concern and a hint of annoyance.

"Oh what does it matter anyway? You broke up months ago!", Hermione announced, still sat on the floor, but now crosslegged facing the messenger.

Harry just watched, mildly entertained and somewhat distracted, turning his head left to right, to left again, like watching a game of tennis, but with words.

"Well... let's just say don't go accepting a box of chocolates off Lavender-"

There was a collective gasp, Ron looked done in and Hermione was struggling to camouflage her indignation.

"What the bloody hell is she doing that for?"

"She simply cannot!"

Ron and Hermione both stated.

"Yep... the old love potion, seems like she's still not over you.", affirmed Y/n, not fretting about this information in the slightest.

"Yeah... yeah I guess, I mean it's understandable though isn't it? No one else likes her do they", Ron sympathetically shrugged.

"What do you mean, 'No one else likes her'?", Y/n questioned, her carefree facade transforming into something more hostile.

"Oh come off it, you know what I meant, the girl's barmy!", he exclaimed.

"Didn't stop you from dating her though, did it", she scoffed.

"Will you two shut up! You've only been dating a month or two yourselves and you're already arguing like an old married couple!", Hermione argued, gathering her books and heading to her dorm with rapid speed.

There was a split second silence as they all watched her leave.

"I uh- ...Ron? You coming?", Harry whispered, following Hermione's lead.

"Er yeah, I'll be up in a minute, mate", he replied softly.

Harry tip toed up the stone staircase, to his dorm, leaving the couple to it.

The common room was empty besides them, everyone else in their dorms chatting quietly if not already asleep. Y/n and Ron sat together on the vermilion sofa, both staring at the floor, neither speaking.

"I'm sorry", she began, "I know you're not interested in her anymore"

"It's fine, I know how you feel, her not being able to leave us alone. But you know that I only want you", he uttered gently, now facing her, his big eyes on hers. He lifted his hand from the worn fabric of the seat, bringing it up to her face, swiping his thumb across her cheek dearly. She smiled warmly, as he leaned down to plant a loving kiss on the top of her head before he clambered up to his dorm.

"Goodnight love", he managed to say before leaving.

"Goodnight", she replied, now staring into the burning but dying flames.

Dragon Quest Builders

Dragon Quest Builders is the most recent game I've finished and it's a fascinating game, I *think* it's a good game but at times I was ready to drop it and move onto something else. Part of the reason I wanted to write this post is to work through my thoughts on it and try and dissect what worked and what didn't for me. On it's surface you could cynically dismiss this game as a lazy Minecraft rip off. It is after all a fantasy themed, block based, crafting, survival game. But it differs in a couple of critical places that solidly makes it it's own game. The biggest difference is that the world is not procedurally generated, instead each of the four chapters has a hand built world that is carefully designed to make exploration and questing more streamlined so you can progress the story at a satisfying pace.The other big difference ties into the first, this game is an entirely solo experience eschewing the social and collaborative aspect that makes Minecraft really special, and instead plays into the strength of the Dragon Quest series and focuses on being a cosy single player RPG with charming characters and writing. The story premise is fun albeit a bit goofy. At the end of Dragon Quest 1 there's a famous part where you have a choice to side with the Dragon Lord, and if you do you instantly game over and are thrown back to your last save. Builder's is a direct follow up to that bad ending. The game opens with your character being woken by the goddess Rubiss and told that Alefgard has been plunged into darkness and you the legendary builder need to venture out and rebuild the world and to teach the inhabitants how to build, because everyone forgot how to build things since the calamity. This fact leads to some fun moments like the first person you encounter being completely in awe of you combining a stick with a mushroom and cooking it over a fire to make a roasted mushroom skewer. Just the idea of combining two things blows this poor man's mind. A really clever thing the game does to tie plot and gameplay together is to have the goddess reassure you that you are not a hero, you are a builder and fighting monsters won't fix the world. This manifests in the game play by having no traditional XP and levelling system, instead to level up you have to build up your town, and to get stronger you have to make better equipment and build new buildings which will provide passive buffs for when you do venture out. This insistence that fighting isn't the solution unfortunately isn't that well realised, the main ways to progress the story are to go out and defeat boss monsters for rare items or to defend your town from waves of enemies. And the combat is just bad. Enemies are HP sponges and you have so few combat options at your disposal that you fight 90% of the enemies the same way, move in attack, step back to avoid their counter-attack, repeat. The wave based defence sections are especially clumsy since it seems like the game wants you to build defensive structures to aid you but every tool they give you in this regard is basically worthless and you are always better off fighting the enemies with your sword outside the town instead. To cap off my combat thoughts there's the end of chapter bosses which are the only time the game makes fighting interesting by forcing you to use special items to overcome some gimmick, the problem is that it's only interesting until you figure out the gimmick because actually executing it is not at all fun. In the end it was the very satisfying resource gathering / building loop that got me through the game especially in conjunction with the iconic DQ style vignette story telling. Also each chapter having a unique twist to vary up the challenge was really welcome seeing as this game was not short at all, with my completion time clocking in at around 50 hours. Final thoughts, this is a way more ambitious game than I was expecting and probably the most fun I've had with a survival crafting game since Minecraft, it didn't always succeed but I'm really curious to try out the sequel now and see where they iterated and what they kept.

“15 minutes left” You spoke as you walked past your students. They were making an Invigoration Draught, a draught that gives the drinker an energy boost, an energy drink so to speak. Something that you could really use right now.

It was Friday, the last day of the school week and the first day of a weekend grading OWL’s and prepping for the next week.

Potions was a popular class this year, so the potion professor asked for your help. To teach as a Potions Professor at Hogwarts. You always had a soft spot for potions, not only because you liked brewing the potions but also because you were bloody fantastic at it.

One of your favourite potions/draughts was the Invigoration draught, you used this draught a lot when you studied for a test but now you will use it to grade the OWLs of your students. You planned to grade the OWLs on tonight so that you could use your Saturday to prepare for the next week. That way you had Sunday all to yourself and a bucket of muggle ice cream.

“That’s it, Times up, Bottle your draught, label it and place it on my desk.” You said as you stood behind your desk, looking into the dark potions classroom. most students were afraid of this room, but to you, it felt cosy and like a second home.

Your students bottled their draughts while you placed a chest on your table. While the students gave you their draughts you registered them and placed them into the chest.

When the last student handed you their draught you looked up into the classroom, it was empty of students and full of messy cauldrons. The last student left your classroom and you let out a sight. there goes your free Sunday.

You started gathering the leftover ingredients while you cast a cleaning spell on a broom. The broom starts sweeping as you placed the ingredients back on to the shelf.

“What happened here?” a low voice asked, while you picked up a dirty cauldron. “Hi Professor Snape, the students made an invigoration draught,” you said while stepping into a green peppermint goo.

“Great” you mumbled as you cleaned your shoe with a wet cloth. not noticing that Professor Slughorn entered your classroom

“Professor we need to talk to you,” Slughorn said, causing you to look around. “Okay, did I do something wrong?” You asked while placing the cloth onto the table.

“No No my dear, we are just worried about you,” Slughorn told you. “You don't need to worry about me, I'm fine! and Who are We?” you asked while fixing your now messy hair.

Snape cleared his throat “Dumbledore, Mcgonagall, Hagrid, Professor..” “You can just say everyone, Severus” Slughorn interrupted him.

You played with your fingers as you sat down onto a chair. “Not everything needs to be perfect,” Slughorn said as he looks into your eyes. He knew you were a perfectionist, everything needed to be just right.

He found you one night sneaking into the restricted section of the library, just because you doubted about the right way to stir a potion.

“I know, but ist hard. I just want to teach the kids everything, i want to share my passion for potions with them, but they just play with their wands all day long. not even listening to a word i say. And then when they get a bad grate they are all like, miss could you tutor me?”

You said while looking at your favorite professor's.

"Take the weekend off, come to us on Monday. Then we will grade it together." Slughorn spoke while waving his wand, casting a cleaning spell on the classroom.

"But?" You protested, while looking at how your classroom cleansed itself.

"No buts, miss", Snape said while the professor's left your classroom.

New beginnings, everything.

New house, new status as a wife, new job.

It’s happening all at once and a little jarring to people how I’m letting these seemingly big life changes take place all at once. It’s not a big deal, it’s been planned for ages and I don’t see why they can’t over lap. As long as you’ve planned them in advance, all it takes is to follow up and let things unfold on their own.

We’ve started sourcing ID for the house 6 months before keys collection. Settle on the ID 3 months ahead and work on the drafts. Some people only start after they collected their keys, which is why we are one of the early ones who moved in. But why, when you know you’re gonna collect your keys, then why haven’t you started fixing on ID leh? Perhaps because I’ve always looked forward to a cosy home of my own and never a lacy and extravagant wedding. I already knew what I had in mind and all it takes was to find an ID who understood and could do what I had in mind. My then bf was annoyed by how I keep asking him questions and opinions about the house when it seems so far away but it never hurts to plan earlier. Now his room only has a mirror and nothing else cos he didn’t manage to plan well! You have to plan, and keep revising it and look at other setups, refine yours then finally know what you really want and what really suits the room. It’s super tiring being my ID.

It was one year earlier that we knew the keys can be collected and weddings are usually booked a year ahead. By the time, we decided that the house is more important and worth spending time, effort and money on so the wedding is really secondary and can be pushed to after the house. And we’ll see what we can do with the money left. We want to be very independent with everything hence we didn’t ask for a cent from our parents and relatives. This also saves us the trouble from any messy relationships and negotiations which happens very often with Asian families. Believe me. Luckily both our parents are not demanding on the wedding and left it entirely up to us.

We had a simple ROM and wedding will come when it comes. The older generation doesn’t really recognise us as a married couple but I really can’t be bothered. This kind of ambiguity actually works well cos ppl don’t get to ask the next qn in life which is when are u having kids. I don’t plan on having any cos I don’t like responsibilities and kids are only cute for like 4 years and i didn’t really enjoy my time as a kid. My take is that if you can’t love your kid or have the capacity to take care of them, then don’t have them. Don’t let your kid and yourself suffer then talk about how great you are sacrificing yourself to raise them. Then say that the kid is responsible of taking care of u. I mean, get a life man, make your own decisions. You don’t have to do something cis everyone else is doing it. Please. Come on, gawd.

So being married is kinda a given, just ROM. We’ve been staying together like 3 years and so comfortable with each other and still so in love, there’s really nothing to be indecisive about. Yes, there’s the thing about not being able to choose other people anymore and having other options and how your husband won’t really treasure you as a wife, compared to being a gf, but there’s something abt the stability and being able to spend the rest of our lives together, being able to put each other a dependents and emergency contacts that I really like. My dad can’t really work as emergency contact if he keeps going missing and changing hp number and my mum will just find me cumbersome if I’m in an emergency. I once thought that she will be worried w me going home at 4 am and having a flat battery but she just told me to screw off for waking her up. Can. Perhaps I’m not so bright at making my parents happy.

New job. Just interview, weigh your options, accept, resign. No meh? And I didn’t go searching for this job. I know I want to be in Pharma. I know I want to try production. If something you’ve been searching for falls into your lap, with a good pay increment and the only con is that it’s out of the way, why not give it a try? I’m still young, don’t mind travelling. Perhaps it’s about knowing what you want after giving different things a try then going for it when it comes.

If you don’t know what you want, it means that you haven’t tried enough things yet.

So stop asking for housewarmings, stop asking if I feel excited, stop asking how’s the new life as a married woman. It’s nothing new, it’s the same life, it’s a matured decision with sufficient confidence, it’s not a leap of faith, because the faith is scorched in long ago. It’s not an escape, it’s a milestone waiting to happen. Everything is kind of thoughts and plans already in my mind and they just pathed out at the same time. That’s why you don’t see us changing in our behaviour. That’s why everything looks so peaceful and natural. These changes are not made because we were unhappy with our current situation, or out of excitement and hope that our new situation will bring. These are things we’ve wanted for a long time. So to us, it’s a no brainer to make the changes and we’re not nervous or worried. We have the confidence, the maturity, the trust, the right mindset and the belief that we will make the best of it, and we know that everything is going to be ok when we have each other. ♥️

Riverdale Raw Thoughts

Binge watched Riverdale last night as my Netflix membership for the month was expiring. (Not renewing again until early November to watch S2 The Crown and other stuff I’m waiting on) - Like I literally stayed up from 9 pm to 6 pm this morning watching the show straight and then went to bed and woke up at noon.

Cheesy dialogue aside, it was pretty great for what it was.

But it suffered from the same thing Scream Queens did - interesting core plot, but cheesy cringy writing and too many pop culture references to pander to their target audience demographic (I’m assuming 18-34)

Wishy-washy social commentary: 

FP Jones ain’t shit but Jughead has a cute beenie and is sensitive so he’s a-okay.

 Alice Cooper grew up on the “wrong side of the tracks” but married well so now she’s determined to keep south side trash out by joining the “neighborhood watch” and using her white woman hood, white feminism and ‘come-uppance’ privilage to publish edgy think pieces.

Betty Cooper has some pent up rage that is sorta overlooked because it was “for good” (doing it for the girls and trying to get revenge for Polly - and because the guy was Black, thinly veiled anti-blackness) until it isn’t overlooked but simply mentioned . Then she initally starts using Jughead and Jughead calls it out and she kind of agrees and says she has “darkness” in her - until something happens again and she decides to “let the darkness out” and be selfish and blame it on something else again.

Jughead getting dealt a piss poor hand, being okay at the South Side school (he’s a gang member - arguably gang leader or liutenant’s son...of course he’s fine jesus fucking christ Riverdale) until the trio of good show up to...talk to him and comfort him? and they realize he’s fine.

Jughead not having shit and the gang seeing him enter the trailer with a girl and (maybe wanting to keep a pg 13 rating) stop him before their steamy make out session leads to something more give him a jacket to become a serpent and Betty is angry that he’s trying to survive and embracing the gang life that he’s essentially grown up around and will be surrounded by until he comes of age.

Archie trying to be a tortured soul when his dad point blank asked him why he’s lying if he wants music that’s cool it’s just unstable; someone else (Veronica I think?) kind of saying why are you being like this no one is making you choose between Football and music; someone bringing up he was only music when he was banging his hottie teacher; the football team heckles him once but they seen he’s Troy Bolton & they accepted him - everyone fucking accepted him but himself like christ and he spent the whole season searching for validation of his self worth in women and girls.

You don’t like Betty, You make out with Veronica, you decide your really into your hottie music teacher and manipulate her into music lessons (although she manipulated the hell out of him as well), when your dad starts getting a boner for her you try to cut contact with her short, people find out, you decide the pussy cats are your answer, they explain they are black and because of the culture they have had to fight hard and they can’t have a white man just step in and run shit, archie the white man steps in and runs shit, archie breaks them up, Archie says he can’t perform alone and manipulates Valerie playing on her insecurities to leave the band, archie decides “he was wrong” and Veronica decides to help him, he ditches Veronica because he looked within himself and realized he wasn’t shit, he patronizes jughead and only resumes their rocky friendship because he wanted him to keep the secret about him banging their hottie teacher, he’s semi jealous that jughead is dating Betty, archie then really wants Veronica and wants to make sure Betty isn’t jealous. He keeps playing the hero...something which probably got his dad killed at the end - If there’s a s2 I haven’t seen it yet)

Veronica Lodge is hella famous by name and it’s a small town everyone knows who she is and she even points out that she expected more people to talk to her and acknowledge her divine presence but Kevin is like “lol you got overshadowed by another rich person’s death” /s but... Ethel Muggs truly has no fucking idea who she is? No incling? No rumors? Is she really that much of a rock-dweller?
