The Sarah Rose American Teen Princess Pageant is a beauty contest to die for! And that’s exactly what the contestants in Mount Rose, Minnesota, are doing. Ever since the vivacious-but-vicious former beauty queen Gladys Leeman (Kirstie Alley, TV’s Cheers) started pushing her charm-challenged daughter, Rebecca (Denise Richards, The World Is Not Enough), to win at all costs, the competition has been dropping like flies. Between exploding tractors and deadly hunting accidents, it’s a wonder the top challenger, poor Amber (Kirsten Dunst, Spider-Man), has the courage to keep her tap shoes on. But after Amber’s mother (Ellen Barkin, TV’s Animal Kingdom) is injured in a suspicious trailer-park-beauty-shop bombing, Amber is determined to fight to the finish – and the battle between the good and the bad is about to get ugly! Experience plenty of mom, apple pie and all-American mayhem, plus a hit-packed soundtrack, in this breakthrough comedy that is “clever, fearless and loaded with wicked lines and touches” (Los Angeles Times).

Torn between religious pacifism and patriotism, Alvin York of Tennessee went on to become World War I's most acclaimed hero. As the simple backwoods farm boy who captured 132 German soldiers during the Battle of Argonne, Gary Cooper (handpicked by York) also won acclaim and his first Best Actor Academy Award®. Released in 1941 when the United States was on the brink of another war, this stirring adventure inspired thousands of enlisting men. Nominated for a total of 11 Oscars® including Best Picture, a winner for Best Film Editing and movingly directed by Howard Hawks, it tells of a religious man's moral crisis, heroics and subsequent return to the rural life he loved while refusing to capitalize on the adulation heaped upon him. An ode to patriotism and the human spirit, Sergeant York endures as one of Hollywood's finest hours.

Did European aristocrat Claus von Bulow (Jeremy Irons) try to murder his wife, Sunny (Glenn Close), at their luxurious Newport mansion in 1980? Tabloids of the day had their opinions. “You have one thing in your favor,” defense attorney Alan Dershowitz (Ron Silver) told von Bulow. “Everybody hates you.” Written for the screen by Nicholas Kazan (Fallen, At Close Range), directed by Barbet Schroeder (Single White Female) and based on Dershowitz’s book, Reversal of Fortune is the acclaimed filmization of events that had all of America talking. For his precise portrait of icy brittleness, Irons won the Best Actor Academy Award®* as well as the Los Angeles and National Society of Film Critics Awards. Think you know the truth? Until you watch…you have no idea.
NEW 2020 1080p master! SUNRISE AT CAMPOBELLO (1960) Run Time 143:00 Subtitles English SDH Audio Specs MONO - English, DTS HD-Master Audio 2.0 - English Aspect Ratio 1.85:1, 16x9 Widescreen Product Color COLOR Disc Configuration BD 50 Includes Original Theatrical Trailer (HD)
He led America’s battles against the Depression and the Axis powers – and won. But first Franklin Delano Roosevelt fought a personal battle against polio that would either destroy him – or arm him for greatness. This powerful film of Dore Schary’s long-running play is an intimate, admiring profile in courage. Ralph Bellamy reprises his dynamic Tony®-winning stage portrayal of the future President, and Greer Garson is his devoted, warbly-voiced wife, Eleanor. Both were uncannily true in their roles, and acclaim followed: Garson earned Golden Globe® and National Board of Review Best Actress awards, as well as one of the movie’s four Oscar® nominations. With exteriors filmed at Campobello and Hyde Park and interiors staged on uncanny duplications of the real-life Roosevelt homes, Sunrise at Campobello shines eloquently and movingly.
NEW 2020 1080p master! THE OPPOSITE SEX (1956) Run Time 116:00 Subtitles English SDH Audio Specs DTS HD-Master Audio 2.0 - English, STEREO - English Aspect Ratio 2.35:1, 16x9 Letterbox Product Color COLOR Disc Configuration BD 50 Includes Original Theatrical Trailer (HD)
“I’ve waited a whole year to grow claws like these. Jungle Red!” One of film’s greatest lines belongs to a wronged wife who wins back her man with the aid of an aggressive shade of nail polish. First a hit play, then an all-star 1939 (and later, 2008) movie, The Women resurfaces here as the musical The Opposite Sex, complete with an all-star cast, lines dipped in acid wit, big production numbers and fabulous ‘50s couture in scintillating CinemaScope®. June Allyson portrays the betrayed woman. Joan Collins is the siren who steals her husband. And Dolores Gray, Ann Sheridan, Ann Miller, Agnes Moorehead, Charlotte Greenwood and Joan Blondell are assorted gal pals (true-blue and envy-green) who convince their demure friend to paint her claws – then use them.
NEW 2020 1080p master from 4K scan from best surviving preservation elements! WATERLOO BRIDGE (1940) Run Time 109:00 Subtitles English SDH Audio Specs DTS HD-Master Audio 2.0 - English, MONO - English Aspect Ratio 1.37:1, 4x3 Full Frame Product Color BLACK & WHITE Disc Configuration BD 50 Includes Theatrical Trailer (HD) and Screen Director’s Playhouse Radio Program with Norma Shearer and Mervyn LeRoy (audio only).
Myra and Roy meet and fall in love on Waterloo Bridge during an air raid. Their love will be one of the war’s unspoken casualties. Heartbroken after Roy is reportedly killed in action, Myra turns to prostitution to make her way. The report, however, is false. Roy later returns from a POW camp, eager to begin life anew with his beloved. But Myra’s shattered spirit may no longer hold any room for happiness. Vivien Leigh plays Myra, at once winning and breaking viewers’ hearts in this exquisite melodrama. In a compassionate performance that was his all-time favorite, Robert Taylor is gallant Roy. Under Mervyn LeRoy’s astute direction, they make Waterloo Bridge a meeting place for lovers.

Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams), respected educator and father of two, is also Black Lightning, superpowered protector of Freeland. And he doesn’t fight alone. He is joined by his superpowered daughters, Anissa (Nafessa Williams), aka Thunder, and Jennifer (China Anne McClain), aka Lightning, as well as his ex-wife, metahuman expert Lynn (Christine Adams). Together, the Pierce family combats the ills eroding their city, including a menacing gang that calls itself The 100 and infamous gangster Tobias Whale (Marvin Jones III). Worse, Freeland has been plagued by government-sponsored experiments and drug trafficking, creating metahumans and addicts while making Freeland the target of a dangerous foreign power, Markovia. Fortunately, the family still has allies in their fight: former covert superspy Peter Gambi (James Remar) and Jefferson’s neighbor, the scrupulously honest deputy police chief Bill Henderson (Damon Gupton).

THE PLOT AGAINST AMERICA (2020) Subtitles English SDH Sound Quality DOLBY DIGITAL SURROUND 5.1 - English Aspect Ratio ORIGINAL ASPECT RATIO - 2.0:1, 16x9 Letterbox Product Color COLOR Disc Configuration DVD9
The HBO® series The Plot Against America, created by The Wire’s David Simon and Ed Burns and based on Philip Roth’s acclaimed novel, brilliantly imagines an alternate American history during World War II. Told through the eyes of the Levins, a working-class Jewish family in Newark, New Jersey, the six-part limited series charts the political rise of aviation hero Charles Lindbergh, a xenophobic populist who captures the presidency in 1940 and turns the nation toward fascism. Caught in the upheaval, the Levins learn that the violence threatening the lives of ordinary Americans is never more than a moment’s political provocation away. Winona Ryder, Anthony Boyle, Zoe Kazan, Morgan Spector, Michael Kostroff, David Krumholtz, Azhy Robertson, Caleb Malis, Jacob Laval and John Turturro star in this powerful tale of intolerance and totalitarianism.
HEAD OF THE CLASS: THE COMPLETE SECOND SEASON (1987-88) Run Time 587:00 Sound Quality MONO - English, DOLBY DIGITAL - English Aspect Ratio 4x3 Full Frame, ORIGINAL ASPECT RATIO - 1.33:1 Product Color COLOR Disc Configuration DVD9
Howard Hesseman (WKRP in Cincinnati) returns as good-natured substitute teacher Charlie Moore for the sophomore season of this fan-favorite sitcom. Charlie is assigned to the Individualized Honors Program, a very different kind of class. The IHP students are so gifted that their teachers are expected to be glorified babysitters, but the unconventional Charlie upsets the applecart by deciding to actually teach! He guides his charges – classic nerd Arvid (Dan Frischman), overachiever Maria (Leslie Bega), debate dynamo Darlene (Robin Givens), Indian immigrant Jawaharlal (Jory Husain), child prodigy Janice (Tannis Vallely), too-cool-for-school Eric (Brian Robbins), chemistry whiz Dennis (Dan Schneider), academic Renaissance woman Sarah (Kimberly Russell), ultraserious Alan (Tony O’Dell) and ethereal bibliophile Simone (Khrystyne Haje) – through academic challenges and real-life problems alike.

on short animation film oscar nominees
dcera (daughter) - i hate this film with SO MUCH PASSION SO MUCH i saw it on animateka, it was terrible, pathetic, boohoo lets cry, everything was awful, i was pissed off in the cinema for having to see it
hair love - interesting topic, found the execution boring as fuck, definitely not material for oscar, art is bland whatever
he cant live without cosmos - ok i was VERY confused because he has a short film from 2014 named: we cant live without cosmos and the newest one is he cant live without cosmos so i was like why is this an oscar nominee if its not from 2019??? anyway i watched the old one its very fun i love it!!! if the new one is in this style im sure its great!!!
hors piste - saw it on animafest, i cant remember if it was funny or if it was just trying to be funny, but ok i give it a pass
kitbull - pixar is there because its pixar. boring and nothng special, neither in animation or story. seen it gazillion times but hey. pixar and animation conformism.
memorable - didnt see it idk cant find it online
mind my mind - another topic weve seen covered 278456483 times, didnt see the entire film so i cant judge, maybe they did it in a good way but this whole “theres a man inside my brains” shtick is getting too old
physics of sorrow - didnt see it, not my jam, dont really have an opinion
sister - didnt see it but i LIVE for stop motion esp these fuzzy puppets, seems interesting and unusal, would like to see it
uncle thomas accounting for days - i was unfortunately forced to see this movie like 5 fucking times and just one was too much for me, boring, pretentious, but its good when it comes in on the programme because i can take a nap.
AND NOW FOR THE THINGS IM WONDERING.
where the hell is acid rain on the list? acid rain, winner of grand prix on animafest (one of four golden festvals in europe), winner of public award, winner on animateka and much more? where is it? oscars, as always, scared of unique aesthetics.
and where the fuck is egg - an AMAZING short about anorexia, definitely an oscar-worthy nominee, one of the best portrayals of it ive ever seen. beautiful and perfect in every way.
i would also add kids by michael frei on the list. but the top two - its literally a crime they are not nominated.

A few artists featured on Find A Song have recently released albums, check them out:
Jindalee - Vela
"The songs on Vela are about experiencing nature through all the senses. It is about the beauty and sensuality of the world. They are summer-y, warm, watery and vibey. If these songs were a colour I feel like they would be a bright turquoise sea. I wanted to capture the feeling of floating on the surface of water, of being in both air and water at the same moment. Landscapes inspired the lyrics in many of the songs, the Mediterranean in particular, where I have been lucky enough to visit often in recent years. They are about different experiences with the sensual world. I wanted to write an album about the human experience in nature and the feeling of letting that surround you, whatever kind of environment it is." (press release)
Penny and Sparrow - Finch
It will punch you differently. It will (with any luck) make you ponder and look up words and reconsider things. We hope you love this and embrace it for its nuance and newness. (newsletter)
Sail By Summer - Casual Heaven
Songs about longing, lack of self-confidence, songs about indifference and choice of directions. It could be Big Thief, Charlie Cunningham or Death Cab For Cutie, inspired by the sound of epic bands like The Cure, Pink Floyd and Spiritualized. But first of all, this is Sail By Summer and their long awaited debut album «Casual Heaven»
Fjords, mountains, rivers of gold. Lots of rain and the summer is cold, this is Bergen, this is Norway. In this refreshing environment you’ll find the melancholic Nordic indie band Sail by Summer. Fronted by Norwegian Grammy award winner William Hut and his characteristic voice, with his long time Danish collaborator Jens Kristian behind the keys. Together they have created this universe inspired by the nature that surrounds them. (press release)
A. Billi Free - I Luma
In theme and style, A. Billi Free effortlessly slides between the present and the future and between earth and space on her debut album I Luma. Meaning "in front" in the Samoan language, I Luma centers A. Billi Free's sincere musings on discovery and adventure in her universe over soulful, uplifting, dance-ready jams. I Luma is backed by an electronic/pop/alternative R&B sensibility entirely composed and produced by Chicago production duo and Tokyo Dawn artists, Tensei. Interstellar jazz multi-instrumentalist Angel Bat Dawid on clarinet sets the tone for this enchanted musical journey on the track "Flourish". Recorded in New Mexico, Illinois, and Massachusetts, the resulting magic outweighs the challenges of this type of creation as the album’s sonics are strong and richly layered, providing a solid foundation for A. Billi Free's smooth tone and earnest message to transmit through the cosmos. Rooted in an eclectic blend of hip hop, soul and electronica, she has spent the last decade in the deserts of southern New Mexico and west Texas fusing elements of both the city and the border into her sound. (press release)
China Bears - I’ve Never Met Anyone Like You (EP)
‘I've Never Met Anyone Like You' contains five tracks including ‘Stay For Good’, their barnstorming first single on fierce panda earlier in 2019, the lusciously sadfaced springtime follow-up ‘Sunday’ and their most recent radio outburst 'Cold Shivers', a slowburning journey through tremulous vocals and crushing old school emo powerchords. Add in the deceptively blossoming 'Trick Myself' and the quietly amazed melancholy of the title track and you have an EP for the ages by a quartet heading for the grandest of stages.
For here is a band which gently bandies around words like "honesty"; a band which make music which can be painfully intimate, but enormously approachable; a band which nods sagely at the stadium-sized introspection of The National, Dry The River, Snow Patrol and Death Cab For Cutie; and a band which, in the case of the aforementioned 'Sunday' can come up with a sublimely sub-hysterical hook which goes: “Good God it’s a Sunday afternoon / What are you doing on the kitchen floor again?” (press release)
Carriers - Now Is The Time For Loving Me, Yourself & Everyone Else
Carriers’ debut LP is a testament to the power of self-reflection and is carefully layered, leaning on strong core songwriting, hypnotic synths and lush guitar tones from Kiser, mesmerizing percussion delivered by Devendorf, and nuanced, dynamic bass lines from Curley. The 9-track album evokes the same guitar-led grandeur of The War on Drugs as Kiser takes stock of life, death, relationships and gratitude for another day. As Kiser details, “Overall it's about appreciating what we have and remaining present, while still being able to have an honest perspective of the past and our future. I’ve personally found a lot of peace in just working hard and staying focused on what I've got going on, trusting, rather than being consumed with striving. This record process has taught me a lot about patience. Life will continue to teach me to have more. I’m just trying to accept what happens and handle it the best I can. Patience is forever.” (press release)
Alex Bent + the Emptiness - Baby
What was supposed to be a love letter to someone else ended up being one to myself. Baby was mastered by Trevor Case of Case Mastering (Kelly Clarkson, Missy Elliot). The album features contributions from BROCKHAMPTON affiliates (singer-songwriter Jack Larsen and producer Connor Barkhouse), as well as Samurai Champs’ Merv xx Gotti and Jeah. (press release)

The 2019 LUCI Award Experience
This year, I was honored to be invited as a judge for the LUCI Awards at Evergreen Tabletop Expo. Being a serious gamer, with over a decade of experience working in the industry (including doing some design and lots of playtesting), I brought all I had to the table.
This award celebrates innovation, fun, and great game design - all qualities that I hold high on my list of importance when playing or purchasing games. It was crucial to me that I gave every game a chance and tried each one with an open mind, ready to learn something new and have a good time.
I took my job very seriously, knowing that every designer put their heart and soul into this game and in front of me to judge. This was an incredible opportunity for them to show off their hard work to a convention of passionate gamers and I wanted to respect that to the fullest.
The Wonderful Judges: Joseph Chen, me, Chris Glein, Paul Peterson, Victoria Cana, Bebo, and Emma Larkins.
In the end, I worked with the other six inspirational judges to reach the decision for the winner and runner-up! The team consisted of personalities from the industry with a wide range of knowledge and experience, making the conversations deeply interesting and lively.
#1: Cabinet of Curiosities by David Iezzi
Photo Credit To Be Bold Games
Congrats to David for the amazing game Cabinet of Curiosities! I absolutely LOVED this game. I didn’t get to complete a full game, but I knew immediately that I wanted to play it over and over again. It was the only game at the event that I would have immediately purchased to take home with me.
In this innovative set collection game, players take turns bidding on a tile grid of items. Whoever bids the highest without passing wins the final tile that is bid on. The tile stays in play, but players continue to bid on items until the entire board is assigned. Then, players get to keep their tiles and a second round of bidding starts on a whole new board of tiles. After that round, players score their final points to see who won.
The multiple levels of strategic thought required in this game is refreshingly unique. With set collection traits inspired by Sushi Go, the bidding in this game adds interesting player interactions and leaves you wanting to plan ahead while deeply relying on what others will do. You must be adaptive and willing to use diplomacy to your advantage.
In addition to this, one of the most appealing features is that each player has a secret objective that helps them gain extra victory points. This helps aid players in what strategy to play, which is very beginner friendly and adds to the overall game-play experience.
This is already a fantastically designed game and I look forward to owning it once it is complete and available!
#2: Mandalaca by Rob Lewis
Photo Credit To Be Bold Games
The runner-up was a sophisticated and unique take on classic strategy games. Only two months into production, the potential for huge success is very high and I expect to see this popping up in game stores some day.
Inspired by games such as Mancala and Go, this two-player turned-based game requires an intense amount of deep thinking and planning. Players each take on the roll of black or white and compete to gain points in their favor in the four colored sections on the game-board. This game captures the elegance of classic games and the complexity of modern strategy.
The game was beautiful with an appealing tactile feel and players were always left wanting to play again and again. One of the best aspects about the game is that it will vary depending on who you play. There are a wide variety of strategic plays and each person has a different way of thinking that will change how the game flows.
This game is also very family friendly and could help teach young children basic game mechanics and strategic thinking.
The following games were semi-finalists and I wanted to give each one a shout out for what I liked about their games. I hope to see all of these games on shelves in the future. Keep up the great work!
Ascending Koi by Nathan Holt:

This hex based tile placing game puts players in the role of different fish in an attempt to teach empathy. Each fish has unique traits associated with their personality types and abilities related to these traits. Fish swim around the board collecting different insects that will help to achieve their abilities. The art style is relaxing and adorable. I absolutely loved this game and was sad we didn’t get to play an entire game. Teaching empathy is such an important goal.
Rising Tides by Just Us Games: This game won an honorable mention from us judges!
Photo Credit To Be Bold Games
Rising Tides puts the serious crisis of global warming into a fun, educational experience. Using real water, the gameplay is unlike anything any of us judges had experienced before. As a cooperative game, players must work together to save the United States from being flooded. As the game plays, you face catastrophic events and must make choices about the cities to save. This game is perfect for classrooms and museums.
For All Mankind by Julia Drachman and Doug Beyers:
This classic mix of space exploration and resource management adds in an interesting element of movement and measuring. The planets actually rotate each round to change the space between them. Not only that, but players must actually measure the distance between planets before traveling the cosmos. With lots of fun building options, new resources each turn, and the threat of nuking your opponents this game has a lot of potential. I can’t wait to see the final design.
Flapjack Flipout by Peter Newland:

This fast-paced dexterity game was definitely the most fun for kids. Players compete to complete pancake orders faster that the other players while flipping them over with paddles. In addition to the challenging dexterity component, you also must remember what flavor of pancakes you cooked and where you set them on the table. This is a great party game to pass time at the beginning of the night or a fantastic game to play with the entire family at holiday gatherings.
Gem Cataclysm by Beau Johnson and Nicolette Butler: This game won the People’s Choice Award!
Photo Credit To Be Bold Games
Portraying a gem stock market, this Euro-style game has a lot of strategies for players to choose in order to make the most money selling gems. Not only can players effect the market prices or gamble for gems by rolling lots of dice, but they can harvest their own gems by building caverns and hiring dwarves to mine for them. I enjoy the different elements happening in the game and can see why it was an exciting choice for the convention attendees.
I hope you get to check out these awesome games in the future! There is something for everyone.

MUSIC
Barbican Concerts On Demand available from Tue 9 Feb until Wed 24 Mar 2021
A range of concerts that have already taken place as part of the Barbican’s successful autumn 2020 concert series Live from the Barbican have just been made available to re-watch on Concerts On Demand until 24 Mar 2021.
Live from the Barbican was first devised during the summer of 2020 when it became apparent that, due to the pandemic, the Centre’s music season could not go ahead as planned in the autumn. A new series was born which, for the first time, made Barbican concerts accessible online for a global digital audience through a livestream and, also, for a reduced, socially distanced live audience in the Barbican Hall. This hybrid experience, developed and delivered entirely in-house, has enabled the Barbican to bring music to its audiences during a difficult year, and, to also support artists and partner organisations during the pandemic. The Barbican is now pleased to be able to bring back a range of these autumn performances as part of the On Demand offer at a time when it had to postpone its planned Spring 2021 series of concerts.
Tickets are £12.50 for new bookers and half price for those who booked tickets to watch the concerts originally. Discounted tickets at £5 are available to 14–25-year-olds through the Young Barbican scheme. Once tickets are bought, audiences have 48 hours to watch the concert.

Stravinsky sent shockwaves through classical music in the 20th century. His first three ballets – The Firebird, Petrushka and The Rite of Spring, all composed between 1911 and 1913 – brought a new and frenzied sense of rhythm, so distressing to audiences that it caused uproar; The Rite of Spring even caused a riot.
From Barbican partners
British baritone James Newby’s song recital as part of the ECHO Rising Stars Festival is now available to watch again for free via Read, Watch & Listen on the Barbican’s website. James Newby is the Barbican’s ECHO (European Concert Halls Organisation) nominee. The recital took place at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg on 28 January 2021.
The Guildhall School alumnus, ECHO Rising Star, BBC New Generation Artist, Kathleen Ferrier Award winner and member of the Hanover State Opera’s ensemble presents a selection of atmospheric Lieder by Clara and Robert Schumann. He is accompanied by pianist Marcelo Amaral. James Newby’s debut album with pianist Joseph Middleton I wonder as I wander came out in 2020.
James’s London ECHO recital was due to take place at Milton Court Concert Hall in January this year but had to be postponed due to the current lockdown restrictions.
CINEMA
In February Cinema On Demand brings together an exclusive programme of worldwide, bold, independent films for audiences to enjoy at home, while the venues remain closed.
Preceding the Barbican Art Gallery’s exhibition Jean Dubuffet: Brutal Beauty, Barbican Cinema On Demand will host an exclusive presentation of Martine Deyres’s 2019 documentary Our Lucky Hours (19 Feb – 31 Mar), including a live ScreenTalk between art historian Sarah Lombardi, director of the Collection de l’Art Brut, Lausanne and Ben Platts-Mills, who works with artists with disabilities in London and has supported the development of Hackney-based inclusive art studio, Submit To Love. The live ScreenTalk will take place on Thu 11 Mar at 7pm.
In this thought provoking documentary, photos, archival footage and sound recordings tell the story of a pioneering psychiatric institution in 1930s France. The asylum was radically re-thought, with doctors, patients and nurses working side by side to run the facility, with the support of the local community. Patients were respected and integrated and individually supported. They took up roles in the hospital kitchen and on local farms, they published a newspaper, and many pursued flourishing visual art practices.
During the Second World War, the asylum also sheltered refugees and Resistance fighters, among them such figures from the Parisian avant-garde as Paul Éluard, Tristan Tzara, Georges Sadoul and Georges Canguilhem. At the end of the war, another visitor was Jean Dubuffet, whose discovery there of the sculptures by patient and artist Auguste Forestier supported his elaboration of the notion of ‘Art Brut’.
Other exclusive highlights on Cinema On Demand during February include:
Cat in the Wall (Dirs Mina Mileva & Vesela Kazakova), set on a South London council estate – in which a Bulgarian family gets into conflict with their neighbours due to an abandoned cat – it’s a striking and provocative drama about the aftermath of the Brexit vote. Screening as part of the New East cinema programme, the film is followed by a recorded ScreenTalk with directors Mina Mileva and Vesela Kazakova.
Screening as part of Forbidden Colours – a Barbican Cinema strand celebrating queer films from places where LGBTQ+ people continue to face oppression – is Several Conversations about a Very Tall Girl (Dir Bogdan Theodor Olteanu), a sensitive Romanian romance in which two young women – one out and proud, the other less confident – begin a tentative affair.
Following on from its sold out screening in Cinema 1 in December, as part of Barbican
Cinema’s Emerging Film Curators’ programme, Reframing the Fat Body (Dirs various) makes its online debut. In this programme of shorts, writer and curator Grace Barber-Plentie celebrates the bigger body; here fat bodies are freed from the constraints put upon them by modern society and allowed to be fluid, free, sexy and radical. This programme features a recorded ScreenTalk with film curator Tara Brown and co-founder of The Fat Zine, Chloe Sheppard, hosted by Grace Barber-Plentie.
Also available are The Capote Tapes (Dir Ebs Burnough) which explores the social rise and fall of Truman Capote, the infamous American writer; Song Without a Name (Dir Melina Léon), which follows a woman’s journey to get her stolen baby back, taken from her just after child birth; and Shahrbanoo Sadat’s tender film The Orphanage, about a young boy in 1980s Afghanistan, who is sent to a Soviet orphanage and finds himself in a complex social hierarchy.
For families and younger audiences there’s Creepy Crawly Films for Families (Dirs various), a compilation of fun shorts celebrating all that’s creepy and crawly in the ground.
Cinema On Demand is available to audiences across the UK with a rolling four-week programme of titles and events that reflect the Barbican’s international cinema programme.
Barbican Cinema has been supported by the Culture Recovery Fund for Independent Cinemas in England which is administered by the BFI, as part of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport’s £1.57bn Culture Recovery Fund supporting arts and cultural organisations in England affected by the impact of COVID-19. #HereForCulture
THEATRE AND DANCE
Inspired Series 2
Inspired is the Barbican’s Theatre and Dance in-conversation podcast series in which some of the amazing artists who work with us share their personal stories about the influences that impact their work creatively. Part of the Barbican’s Nothing Concrete podcast, the first Inspired series was released weekly in September 2020. This new Inspired series, released weekly from the beginning of February, pairs Barbican young artists with those that inspire them.
In episode 1 interdisciplinary artist Riwa Saab talks to writer and director Kirsty Housley about her extensive career in theatre, the craft of dramaturgy and directing, and the political nature of her work.
In episode 2 Barbican Young Poet Amani Saeed talks to storyteller Amrou Al-Kadhi about gender identity and drag performance.
In episode 3 sound artist and composer Rebekah Alero talks to vocalist, movement artist and composer Elaine Mitchener about improvisation, contemporary music theatre and performance art.
In episode 4 author Rogan Graham talks to actress and writer Susan Wokoma about acting and activism.
In episode 5 multidisciplinary practitioner Gabriel Akamo, and writer and performer Jeremiah Brown talk to actor Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù about his career, heritage and legacy.
Blak Whyte Gray
Co-commissioned and co-produced by the Barbican, Blak Whyte Gray by Barbican Artistic Associate Boy Blue premiered at the Barbican in 2017 and was restaged here in 2018 due to demand. Created by co-artistic directors Kenrick ‘H2O’ Sandy and Michael ‘Mikey J’ Asante, an extract from the piece, Whyte, is available on BBC iPlayer and Sadler’s Wells Digital Stage until Fri 26 Feb 2021. This fierce, bold and galvanising dance work, set to a multilayered electronic score, reflects themes of identity, oppression and transcendence. The time is once again right to ask questions, to break free from a system that isn’t working, to emerge on the other side to an awakening – a return to roots, a celebration of culture.
CREATIVE LEARNING
Subject to Change: January 2021 commission
As part of Barbican Guildhall Creative Learning’s programme Subject to Change: New Horizons, interdisciplinary artists Mandisa Apena and Tice Cin have released: "cos now im missing our touchhh", a new musical score and video exploring the loss of nightclubs and queer nightlife in the UK due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The audio of Mandisa & Tice’s track uses ASMR sounds of their own breath and laughter to create the drumline, mixed together with a collage of video snippets of clubbing scenes and people dancing. The piece aims to illustrate how nightclubs can be a vital space for deep healing, the excitement of being openly queer and feeling united through digital spaces, mutual love and understanding. Through this work, Mandisa & Tice hope to show queer club culture during lockdown and chatroom bonding, celebrate togetherness through technology, as well as making note of the physical spaces that they miss so much, and the way lack of touch has affected them.
The Subject to Change: New Horizons programme commissions a different young creative, each month for a year, to produce new and powerful artistic work responding to the uncertain times in which we are living. Mandisa & Tice’s piece is the seventh in the series. New work will be shared every month on the Barbican’s website and social media channels until June 2021.
LEVEL G
Experience the 2021 programme of the New Suns Feminist Literature Festival from home
The annual literary festival New Suns returns for a weekend of talks, workshops and a film centred around feminist storytelling. The weekend will feature acclaimed writers, activists, artists, and academics including adrienne maree brown, Season Butler and Dorothea Lasky. This third edition of the festival, running from Friday 5 – Sunday 7 March 2021, will take place entirely online for the first time. New Suns is a co-production between the Barbican and independent publisher and curator Sarah Shin.
This year’s New Suns will look to the legacy of eminent science-fiction author Octavia Butler, to explore the power we have to both sustain and change the world around us, and how to commune with others. In particular, New Suns will reflect on Butler’s prophetic, unfinished Earthseed series, which imagines Earth in the 2020s ravaged by ecological disaster and violent divisions.
The festival will navigate the books’ central themes, such as the inevitability of change, community-building, examinations of race and gender, and humanity’s relationship to the cosmos. For the first time, there will be a limited edition New Suns anthology booklet to purchase which includes an extract from Octavia Butler’s book The Parable of the Sower; poetry by Dorothea Lasky and Daisy Lafarge; guides for self-reflection and meditation; as well as herbal recipes for strength and healing to enjoy this spring and beyond. The anthology is accompanied by thyme seeds and instructions on how to use the herb beyond the culinary.

Press Release
Longmont, Colo., ... Craft beer? Or hard seltzer? With Bootstrap Brewing’s revolutionary new Party Pack, there’s no need to choose — there’s a little something for everyone. Earlier this year, as the effects of COVID-19 began causing uncertainty in the craft beer industry, the Longmont-based brewery quietly released the 12-can party pack featuring five award-winning craft beers and the widely popular Sparkalicious hard seltzer.
The Party Pack features two 12-ounce cans of each of the following six Bootstrap offerings, all of which are gluten reduced brews:
Insane Rush IPA — A perfect balance of Cascade and Simcoe hops give this India Pale Ale a unique blend of citrus and pine aromas and flavors. Winner of a silver medal at the 2014 U.S. Beer Open Championship, the 2015 Denver International Beer Competition, and the 2018 and 2019 USA Beer Ratings. 7.6% ABV | 51 IBUs
Lush Puppy Juicy IPA — Made with massive amounts of Galaxy, Mosaic, and Citra hops, the Lush Puppy is a bold Juicy IPA packed with tropical and citrusy notes. 6.3% ABV | 40 IBUs
Chillax Pineapple Gold — An easy-drinking Golden Ale brewed with a refreshing blend of Noble hops and Pilsner Malt, and infused with real pineapple, giving this beer a tangy, sweet and subtle taste of the tropics. Winner of a bronze medal at the 2018 and 2019 Beer Ratings, and the 2016 North American Beer Awards. 4.5% ABV | 10 IBUs
Stick’s Pale Ale — A nice, citrusy American Pale Ale dry hopped with Mosaic hops for a smooth, delicious finish. Gluten reduced. Winner of a gold medal at the 2016 Great American Beer Festival for American Pale, gold and silver in the 2016 & 2017 U.S. Open Beer Competition among others. 5.5% ABV | 36 IBUs
Wreak Havoc Imperial Red Ale — A delicious, smooth, massively hopped Imperial Red Ale featuring seven hop additions, and a dash of Crystal Malt to give this beer its beautiful reddish hue. Winner of a bronze and silver medal at 2016 Great American Beer Festival, a bronze medal at the 2016 and 2018 World Beer Cup, a bronze and silver medal at 2015 U.S. Open Beer Championship, and a gold medal at the 2019 North American Beer Awards. 8.5% ABV | 88 IBUs
Sparkalicious Hard Seltzer — New to Bootstrap’s line-up, the Sparkalicious Hard Seltzer line up is made with real fruit and inspired by classic cocktail recipes — a rotating selection of their three seltzer flavors are included in every party pack.
“We wanted to do something very different from what other breweries were doing,” said Leslie Kaczeus, co-owner of Bootstrap Brewing alongside husband Steve. “We created the Party Pack so that customers, new and longtime Bootstrap drinkers, would have the chance to try more of our beer styles. The Sparkalicious launch happened to coincide with the Party Park launch, so we threw two of those in as well!”
Hard Seltzers are having a moment in the craft beer industry. Hard seltzers are light, refreshing, low calorie, low in ABV, gluten-free, and are expected to become a $2.5 billion beverage category by 2021. They’re also a go-to drink for the Kaczeus’ who currently offer three Sparkalicious flavors (4.5% ABV | 0 IBUs), all made with real fruit and inspired by classic cocktails.
The Sparkalicious Greyhound, the Sunrise, and the Cosmo are also sold in a special Sparkalicious mixed Party Pack. Unlike many hard seltzers on the market that use oils, resins, or extracts derived from natural sources to impart flavor to the beverage, Bootstrap’s hard seltzers are all made with real fruit, creating a more concentrated flavor and vibrant coloring.
“When we decided to make Sparkalicious, we wanted a hard seltzer we would enjoy drinking ourselves, and we wanted to use real fruit,” said Kaczeus. “We then decided to create flavors based on cocktails we like to drink.”
Both the Party Pack and Sparkalicious Party Pack are sold at the brewery’s 30-bbl brewery in Longmont, and at select retail stores along the Front Range and I-70 Corridor that carry quality craft beer.

Toni Myers: Not All Stars Are in the Sky (1943-2019)
I Am So Sad To Report that Toni Myers, the veteran filmmaker credited in more than 18 IMAX® films and a myriad of other film and television projects spanning a multi-faceted career of over 40 years, has died at age 75. She passed away on Monday, February 18th, mere months after her unforgettable presentation at the Inaugural Ebert Symposium on Empathy for the Universe last October 1. She was as much a star as the over 150 astronauts she taught to film in space, and was known as the Spielberg of space films. In fact, the day before her presentation at the University of Illinois, she received a call from the International Space Station which she at first thought was a hoax, but quickly learned was a call to wish her a Happy Birthday. She was diagnosed with cancer a few weeks after that visit.
A recipient of many awards, one of the last and most precious was presented to her a few days prior to her passing. Ms. Myers received the national Companion of the Order of Canada from G.G. Julie Payette, the Governor General of Canada and former astronaut. The ceremony on February 15th, including a NASA tribute, occurred at her home. Canadian astronauts Dave Williams and Roberta Bondar were in attendance as well. Ms. Myers died peacefully at her home in Toronto with her family by her side. We send deepest condolences to her family. She was predeceased by her husband, painter and filmmaker Michael Myers, in 2010. She is survived by her son, step-daughter, and three grandchildren.
Born on September 29th, 1943, to Douglas and Norah Trow, Myers attended Branksome Hall and the Ontario College of Art in Toronto before becoming an assistant editor on commercials, episodes of the CBC series "Telescope" and director Don Owen's groundbreaking 1964 film "Nobody Waved Goodbye." She also worked on the CBC public affairs program "This Hour Has Seven Days" and the drama "Forest Rangers", Canada's first TV show shot in color. A pivotal meeting with future IMAX co-founder Graeme Ferguson in 1965 led to a 50-year partnership between the pair that included some of the finest documentaries ever made for IMAX.
The Giant Screen Cinema Association (GSCA) awarded Myers with outstanding, lifetime achievement award in 2018 for her pioneering vision. She was editor and writer of IMAX’s groundbreaking space trilogy: "The Dream Is Alive," "Blue Planet" and "Destiny in Space." With the advent of IMAX®3D, Myers wrote, edited, and co-produced the award-winning "Deep Sea 3D," and "Under the Sea 3D" with Howard and Michele Hall. She was Producer/Director/Writer/Editor of "Space Station 3D" and "Hubble 3D," each awarded Best Film by the Giant Screen Cinema Association, and among the most successful IMAX documentaries ever made. Myers enjoyed a long and productive association with NASA as a key member of the IMAX team that has trained 155 astronauts and cosmonauts in IMAX film making for 24 missions flown over 25 years.
Toni Myers, Chaz Ebert, Terry Virts, Donna Cox and Robert Patterson at the IMAX presentation of "A Beautiful Planet" at the Inaugural Ebert Symposium on Empathy for the Universe.
She worked closely with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the Space Telescope Science Institute, and the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois, marrying data from space-based observatories with pioneering computer techniques to allow audiences of all ages to explore the wonders of the cosmos in IMAX. To date, over 100 million people have seen the IMAX space films worldwide. In addition to her IMAX work, Myers has many television drama and feature films to her credit, including pioneering music films with John Lennon and Yoko Ono, and Santana. Her music skills were later utilized as Associate Producer and Supervising Editor on the IMAX film "Rolling Stones at the Max."
Myers produced and directed the 3D IMAX film "A Beautiful Planet" for which Myers and team trained four International Space Station crews who captured material for the film over a year aboard the Station. The film documents life aboard the completed Station, and examines the changes to our Earth as seen from the crews’ unique perspective in orbit. It was narrated by Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence and was released in Spring 2016. "A Beautiful Planet" received a special presentation at last fall's inaugural Ebert Symposium in Champaign, Illinois.
Donna Cox of the National Center for Supercomputing Applications considered Ms. Myers a friend and said: "Toni was a great human being, writer, director, photographer and friend. She valued all who worked with her, including our AVL team and the 155 astronauts that she trained. She is honored and remembered in countless ways with her pioneering contributions to IMAX space movies, science outreach and raising the awareness of our beautiful planet and universe. We will all greatly miss her."
Astronaut Terry Virts, Toni Myers and Doron Weber of the Sloan Foundation at the Ebert Symposium.
Various former NASA astronauts paid tribute to Myers via Twitter, including Tom Jones, who hailed her as an "IMAX genius." "The first film on shuttle I recall seeing – 'Toni's The Dream is Alive' – blew me away," he wrote. "I wanted to be a part of that adventure. We’ll miss Toni, but her films will never be eclipsed." Mark Polansky shared Jones' sentiments, noting, "Toni was an artist who brought human space exploration alive to everyone. Toni's work on IMAX films such as 'The Dream is Alive,' 'ISS,' and more will live forever, as will her legacy. Godspeed, Toni." Another guest of the Ebert Symposium, Astronaut Terry Virts, recalled collaborating with Myers on "A Beautiful Planet," calling it the highlight of his career in space. "Toni's legacy will live on forever," he tweeted.
In a 2014 short film for IMAX, filmmaker Christopher Nolan credited Myers' astonishing footage of space exploration with inspiring his approach to "Interstellar." "One of the first things I wanted to do for research was to view some original prints [of IMAX documentaries], and we did a whole day's viewing, hours and hours of incredible images, and the name on the films, it was Toni Myers," said Nolan.

// Google search Lainey Gossip Drake gets cut off February 11, 2019 at 3:31 PM by Kathleen Drake accepts the award for Best Rap Song for 'Gods Plan' during the 61st Annual Grammy Awards on February 10, 2019, in Los Angeles 331327 This is the Grammys. Set those words to the tune of Childish Gambino’s “This Is America.” The track won Song of the Year and Record of the Year last night, making it the first rap song in HISTORY to win those categories. In its 60-year history, the Grammys only now found a rap song they deemed worthy of two of their biggest honours. These are Grammys that Drake has never won. He’d won 3 previous to this year’s show, but all had been in the “Rap” categories. Last night, “God’s Plan” won Best Rap Song. This is the Grammys. Drake’s history with the Grammys has been tepid at best. He did not submit More Life for consideration. In 2017, he didn’t show up to the ceremony to collect his two awards, again both for rap categories. Here’s what he said then about his Grammys. “Even though ‘Hotline Bling’ is not a rap song, the only category they can manage to fit me in is a rap category. Maybe because I’ve rapped in the past, or because I’m black, I can’t figure out why… I won two awards last night, but I don’t even want them. … It feels weird for some reason.” We’ve written about this in the past in reference to Jay-Z and Beyoncé, two living legends, two artists who put out two of the greatest albums of the past decade. Jay and Bey are constantly relegated to the “urban” categories. They didn’t show up to this year’s Grammys but they did win Best Urban Contemporary Album for Everything is Love. Drake has called out the Grammys in the past for their blatant disrespect of a genre that has kept the music industry afloat for years and their lack of reverence for a genre they use to make their show more entertaining through performances but rarely through awards. Cut to last night. Drake accepts his award and calls the Grammys out to their face. He wasn’t sitting in the audience. He refused to play the ‘stand in the crowd and give you cutaways’ game. He was waiting backstage when his name was called. He walked out smiling, clearly with his own plan in place. An early shot fired: “It’s actually the first time in Grammys history I actually am who I thought I was.” I didn’t know how to interpret that line at first. It was Lainey who suggested Drake was calling out the show for constantly relegating him to the Rap column. Then, I revisited his statement above. “The only category they can manage to fit me in is a rap category.” So, what he’s sarcastically getting at is that with this song – an ACTUAL rap song – it’s the first time the Grammys gave him recognition for “who [he] thought [he] was.” That was his first jab. His next swings were more deliberate. They landed, without any need for interpretation. “All my peers that make music from their heart that do things pure and tell the truth, I wanna let you know we're playing in an opinion-based sport, not a factual-based sport. So, it's not the NBA where at the end of the year you're holding a trophy because you made the right decisions or won the games... This is a business where sometimes it's up to a bunch of people who might not understand what a mixed race kid from Canada has to say or a fly Spanish girl from New York or anybody else… But my point is you've already won if you have people singing your songs word for word, if you're a hero in your hometown. Look, if there's people who have regular jobs who are coming out in the rain, in the snow, spending their hard-earned money to buy tickets to come to your shows, you don't need this right here. I promise you, you already won." Drake tries to say more but before he can throw another punch, the Grammys cut to commercial. The producers may try to say it wasn’t deliberate but up until that point in the show, the other winners were not cut off as abruptly. And you can’t ignore that just as Drake was reading the Grammys, it was conveniently time for a commercial break. Listen, Drake could have sat out the show altogether, like he’s done before and like Childish Gambino did last night, and Frank Ocean has done before them. No, he showed up with something to say. Drake turned down performing at the Grammys this year, as did Kendrick Lamar and Childish. Hip-hop artists seem to be fed up with the Recording Academy’s bullsh-t. I’m glad that Drake showed up to say his piece. I’m glad he stood up for a genre that he currently dominates. If the charts are any indication, Drake is the most relevant artist of today. He’s been criticized in the past for not using his platform to say anything substantial. Last night, Drake stepped up and dropped the mic. FINALLY. If I’m being picky, I just wish he had really gone for the jugular. If Drake was trying to say that the Grammys don’t care about black artists, I almost wish he had just said it – with gusto. In his own words, he said the Grammys weren’t relevant. He told his peers that these awards don’t matter and that they shouldn’t be looking to this show to validate them. He’s right. He shouted out Travis Scott and Cardi B, two black artists who put out two of the most pertinent albums of the year but were still pushed into their lanes of Rap or “Urban.” (Cardi was nominated for Album of the Year but didn’t win.) If Drake had been given more time to talk, maybe he would have called these injustices out by name. But instead of letting the man have his moment, the Grammys silenced him like they’ve been doing to the biggest artists in pop culture for years. Sounds like a real solid strategy in staying relevant. The Grammys cut off DRAKE. This is the Grammys. It’s poetic that Childish Gambino’s song about racial injustice in America is the first rap song to break the Grammys’ shutout of the genre. The song is telling America about itself. It won two of the Big Four awards on a night that Drake told the show about itself. It may be my favourite thing Drake has ever done. I’ll leave you with Hannah Giorgis for The Atlantic breaking down what Drake’s chess move says for the future of this flailing show. If Drake, that goofy and algorithm-friendly genre-bender of a rapper, is no longer willing to feign appreciation for the award, then who in hip-hop will care about its future? A WORD.
