Something has been bugging me for the past few weeks and so I decided to look into for myself since I couldn’t get a straight answer from a reliable source.
Of all that we DON’T know about the new corona virus and the disease it causes, the one thing we do know is the minimum speed at which is spreading. This is the curve we were all told we needed to flatten to not overwhelm our health care workers. And this has, in fact, been demonstrably achieved. Perhaps not to the extent needed, but we know for a fact that left unchecked, the spread of the virus doubles every third day. The number of new cases in Colorado, right now, are doubling at a rate of about once every 18 days and have been for about the past two weeks. In New York, and Washington State, it’s actually down to about doubling every forty days. Of course, this is just the number of new cases being reported, and the virus itself could actually be spreading faster than this among those who have not been tested due to a lack of symptoms or a lack of tests; it likely is, to be honest. But the verifiable data says that it is currently spreading at those speeds, and probably slightly faster. I cannot speak for health care workers on whether or not this is enough curve flattening, but it is happening.
But here’s the part that has been gnawing at me; we have known the number of positive tests daily, in certain jurisdictions, and an observable changing growth rate for the new positive tests for the past ten weeks as a result, why can’t we find a pretty reasonable estimation of how far this has actually spread? I have had many people kind of mock me when I suggest this, but I don’t think this is an unreasonable thing to examine and come up with an actual number that is a fairly accurate estimate. So I went ahead and ran a little exercise on this to see for myself and satisfy my curiosity.
Let’s start with some other things that we are reasonably certain about when it comes to the virus and the disease it causes. It takes about a week to be infected and then start showing symptoms, at least symptoms to the point where your concern might send you to the doctor to be tested, if tests are available, or even to the hospital. And once you’re tested it takes about a week to find the results, though I understand there might be some faster than this; everyone I know who has been infected or who has been tested have only gotten results a week later. So, hypothetically, if someone picks up the virus today, May 1, they can get sick between the fifth and the seventh, go get tested, if it’s available, and be counted as positive result and a statistic on or around May 14th. So if there are 100 new infections recorded on May 14th, that actually means that the actual infection likely happened around today. Putting this another way, everything that is happening today is the result of what was going on two weeks ago. To put that into a really good context, that means that the rate of infections in New York being at a rate doubling every 40 days is the result of what was going on around the 15th of April.
Hopefully all of that is something we can agree upon. Now comes the math.
If you don’t know what exponential growth means, it’s why I keep mentioning the doubling rate. It’s like that riddle about your rich neighbor giving you the choice of $10,000 to house sit for a month, or a penny on day one, two pennies on day four, four pennies on day 3, eight pennies on day 4, and so on doubling every day. Written out as a mathematical function, when something doubles every day like that, it’s f(x)=2^x. For things that double slower than every day, it’s f(x)=2^(x/3) where the three means it doubles every third day. So, f(x)= 2^(x/40) means the virus is spreading at a rate of doubling every 40 days.
Now, I did this exercise for three different states. Colorado, because I live here. Washington, because I used to live there and the outbreak started very early there. And New York because this seems to be the region of this country experience this the hardest.
In Colorado, there were 8 confirmed cases on March 5. In New York, there was 1 on March 1. And in Washington, there were 2 on February 27. That means there was a positive infection two weeks prior to each date. Even if we weren’t testing for it before that two-week period and it was present and spreading, that is all conjecture and speculation. We know for a fact that there were people infected on that date in February in each state, and enough to create viral, exponential growth.
The number of confirmed cases in each of these states on a daily basis is very well documented as it may be in others; in other states I looked at, it’s either unavailable or was not documented. This gives us a pretty good idea of the absolute slowest rate the virus was being spread two weeks prior. For the sake of my modeling, I didn’t bother calculating the rate until there were 100 positive cases for any of the states in question as this would likely lead to an inflated rate. In fact, it did for New York anyway. The growth rate of new cases in New York between March 9 and March 21 was closer to doubling every 1.8 days. I decided that this was an aberration. I used a growth rate of doubling every three days until evidence showed that it was slowing in the number of confirmed cases happening two weeks later.
So, if the virus is spreading no faster than the rate at which we are seeing new cases two weeks later, and we know that it is spreading much further and faster than this because we don’t have enough tests and the mildly ill people are doing a good job of staying home, and letting tests be done on those with more severe symptoms, where are we?
Well, assuming that 100 people were infected in Colorado on February 20, 500 people in Washington were infected on February 12 (the number is higher because there was a confirmed case in January added later, but the growth rate didn’t grow exponentially until the beginning of March from the health department records, so it was likely at or around 500 infections at that point), and 500 in New York on February 15 (one source said 600, but I decided to stay on the low end) this is where we are:
Colorado – 268,000 infections Washington – 500,000 infections New York – 1.37 million infections
These numbers mean that there have been 94% of the cases in Colorado untested or confirmed, 97% in Washington, and 78% in New York. And this is the absolute bare minimum because we know that the virus is moving faster than the number of reported positive cases. If you were to tell me that the actual totals were twice each of those numbers, I would not be surprised even slightly.
Now, I am not saying this isn’t serious. 65,000 deaths, and let’s be honest, this is going to go north of 70 and maybe reach 80 in this country before the end of the summer, is a tragedy, especially if it was, in fact, largely preventable and avoidable with a competent response from the federal government. The same can be said of probably 10 times more who survive and who will end up with lifelong adverse effects of some sort. And I am not suggesting that precautions taken were unwise or unnecessary, or even that we simply roll them back immediately and without some caution and trepidation as we ease back. If we saved only saved 10,000 extra lives by not overtaxing a health care system that already runs at an average of about 90% capacity, it was worth it, and continues to be, especially if it we hypothetically saved 200,000.
But we all need to pause and take a moment to collectively acknowledge that the sheer and utter panic we have come to accept as the new normal is probably unnecessary. Over the course of the last 12 weeks, we have come a long, long way and my little exercise in exponential growth basically says as much.
When I started, this was merely something I wanted to do for the sake of my own curiosity. When I saw the results, I felt a lot more reassured. For all of the guess work still being made prognosticating about the future, this is actual real-life figures about what HAS happened. And what they show is that the steps we took worked at flattening the curve, the overall likelihood of developing symptoms, once thought to be around 40% of cases, could actually be closer to half of that, and the mortality rate is likely under 1%. And that is my point in sharing this. I hope it does ease a little tension and uneasiness for people.
We are being bombarded constantly by countless experts, quotes, testimonials, every day, from every source imaginable. It is overwhelming. So every now and then, take a moment to pause, take a deep breath, and realize that this was bad, but probably not nearly as bad as our collective perceptions have led us to believe. And if you would like to close on some optimism, realize that right now I don’t think it is likely to get worse in the near future, and also that we have most likely gotten through the toughest part, already. And now, maybe you will think so, too.
Stay safe and healthy, and remember to wash your hands.

This winter may be different, at least in America. Last year, almost nobody was vaccinated against Covid-19. As of October 7, 56 percent of the US population is fully vaccinated, according to the New York Times’s tracker. That includes 84 percent of people over 65, who are generally the most vulnerable to dying from the virus. The Food and Drug Administration will soon consider whether to authorize a vaccine for children as young as 5, which would push vaccination rates higher. More vaccinations should mean a better winter. Other factors — how much people travel, what precautions they take to social distance, etc. — will play a role, but nothing is as likely to influence how the winter unfolds as vaccination rates. At this point, about 75 percent of Americans ages 12 and older have received at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine. Most importantly, 95 percent of people over 65 have gotten at least one dose, and the federal government has signed off on booster shots for that age group. And Pfizer has asked the FDA to approve its vaccine for children ages 5 to 11, which sets the stage for vaccinations to begin for the school-aged population in a matter of weeks. But in the same data, there are trends that could result in a more difficult winter, one in which many Americans remain unprotected from Covid, fully vulnerable to the delta variant — or, in the worst-case scenario, a more virulent successor. About 12 percent of Americans say they will “definitely not” get the vaccine, under any circumstances, according to the KFF’s September poll. They appear unlikely to be moved by any incentives or requirements; some of them have become a part of the anti-vaccine, pro-miracle cure community that has developed during the pandemic and is not persuaded by the mainstream consensus. —Dylan Scott, Vox Follow @inkagnedotv #corona #coronavirus #covid #covid19 #covid19brasil #covid19españa #covid19india #covid19memes #covid19news #covid19usa #covid2020 #covid_19 #covid_19😷 #covidartchallenge #covidnews #covidー19 #covi̇d_19 #covıd #lockdown #pandemic #quarantine #quarantineandchill #quarantinelife #socialdistancing #stayathome #stayhealthy #stayhome #staysafe #virus https://www.instagram.com/p/CUx9FPrJ4q-/?utm_medium=tumblr

DC Comics has detailed several upcoming titles for the year:
On June 29, join DC in celebrating eight decades of emerald-clad swashbuckling, crime-fighting, and trick arrows of every kind when the Green Arrow 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular #1! Honoring Green Arrow and his allies across his 80-year history, from the Golden Age to now, the anniversary special includes 12 stories from some of DC’s most esteemed writers and artists who have contributed to the legacy of Oliver Queen. The title will also include 8-decade variant covers depicting the Emerald Archer through the ages.
This anthology not only features a “who’s – who” of comic book storytellers but also includes a unique and heartfelt tribute to the career of iconic DC and Green Arrow scribe Denny O’Neil. “Tap, Tap, Tap” is a silent, wordless story from Denny O’Neil’s son Larry, Jorge Fornes (Rorschach), and Dave Stewart (Superman). The story chronicles the challenges and victories in Denny’s life both in and out of comics, from his childhood, raising a family, his stellar career as a writer, until his passing in 2020
Additional stories in this anthology include:
“The Disappearing Bandit” Written by Mariko Tamaki, Art by Javier Rodriguez It’s the Golden Age of Green Arrow and Speedy, brought to humorous and loving life by New York Times bestselling writer Mariko Tamaki (Harley Quinn: Breaking Glass) and acclaimed artist Javier Rodriguez (Batgirl: Year One). A lot of people attempt to affectionately show the silliness of the first age of super heroes, but few have done it as exceptionally as Mariko and Javier. Trick arrows for everyone!
“Punching Evil” Written by Tom Taylor, Art by Nicola Scott, Colors by Annette Kwok To become a more adept superhero and fighter, Green Arrow goes to train with the Golden Age superhero Wildcat at his gym. In true Wildcat fashion, he shows Ollie the hard way of what it takes to be your own hero. Tom Taylor (Nightwing, Suicide Squad, Injustice) brings this story to life, with incredible artwork from Nicola Scott (Wonder Woman 75th Anniversary Special) and Annette Kwok (Joker/Harley: Criminal Sanity).
“Who Watches the Watchtower?” Written by Stephanie Phillips, Art by Chris Mooneyham, Colors by Mike Spicer The Green Arrow is left behind on the Justice League Satellite while the rest of the team goes on an important mission. Oliver is less than thrilled, and righteously indignant about the situation as usual until an alien armada invades the Satellite. Can Ollie stand alone against an alien onslaught before it reaches earth? Acclaimed writer Stephanie Phillips (Harley Quinn) captures that “Denny O’Neil Green Arrow”-voice, and this story is brought to life in gorgeous fashion by Christopher Mooneyham’s (Nightwing) retro/modern bronze age aesthetic.
“Out of the Shadows” Written and Art by Mike Grell, Colors by Lovern Kindzerski Legendary Green Arrow writer and artist Mike Grell return to the 1980’s era of The Longbow Hunters. The Green Arrow must team up with the legendary anti-hero Shado to stop a shipment of smuggled guns from making it into Seattle. Depicting The Emerald Archer as only he can, Grell will remind readers why his take on Ollie Queen is still a Green standard.
“The Arrow and the Song” Written by Ram V, Art by Christopher Mitten, Colors by Ivan Plascencia This tale is a beautiful meditation on the love between Green Arrow and Black Canary through the years and the found family that they’ve created. Writer Ram V (Catwoman) puts together this beautiful story of love and how life takes turns you don’t expect. Gloriously brought to life by the work of Christopher Mitten (Batman: Arkham Unhinged) and Ivan Plascencia (The Flash).
“One” Written by Brandon Thomas, Art by Jorge Corona, Colors by Matheus Lopes We go right back to the mid-90s with this story. Oliver Queen is dead. Connor Hawke is Green Arrow and he has to save the main Queen Industries building in Star City, the home of a business and family he was never part of, from a group of terrorists. Brought to you by Infinite Frontier and Future State writer Brandon Thomas (Future State: Aquaman) and amazingly drawn by Jorge Corona (We Are Robin).
“Green Man and Autumn Son” Written by Devin Grayson, Art by Max Fiumara Catwoman writer Devin Grayson and artist Max Fiumara shine a spotlight on Roy Harper, a.k.a Red Arrow, as he continues to manage his transition from “sidekick” to adult hero, along with single parenthood and his struggles with addiction and recovery.
“Star City Star” Written and Art by Phil Hester, Inks by Ande Parks, Colors by Trish Mulvihill Phil Hester drew nearly fifty issues of Green Arrow in the early 2000s, working with popular writers like Kevin Smith, Brad Meltzer, and Judd Winnick. Here, Phil synthesizes what was so great about his run into a tremendous eight-page story. Green Arrow tries to save a young girl named Star who has been kidnapped but has to run through a gauntlet of his greatest villains and allies to get to her. Including: Onomatopoeia, Speedy (Mia Dearden), Green Lantern (Hal Jordan), Black Canary, Arsenal, Connor Hawke, and Count Vertigo.
“Happy Anniversary” Written by Vita Ayala, Art by Laura Braga, Colors by Adriano Lucas This story focuses on the point in time where Green Arrow and Black Canary were married right before the New 52. On the day of their anniversary, the two are at each other’s throats and then Green Arrow gets kidnapped. Black Canary thinks the kidnapping is part of an anniversary game/present but quickly discovers that Green Arrow has REALLY been kidnapped by DEATHSTROKE and she has to save him. Vita Ayala (Future State: The Next Batman) writes a wonderful Mr. and Mrs. Smith-style action rom-com brought to life by Laura Braga (DC Comics Bombshells).
“The Sympathy of the Woods” Written by Ben Percy, Art by Otto Schmidt It’s the DC Rebirth Era, Green Arrow is feeling lost, the world is getting worse, and he doesn’t feel like he’s making enough of a difference. To cheer him up, Black Canary, Red Arrow (Emiko Queen), Diggle, and Henry Fyffe try to throw him a party to remind him of the beautiful community he’s built. But what starts as a celebration will become a rescue mission as Green Arrow is hunted down by the Dark Archer known as MERLYN. From DC talents Ben Percy (Nightwing) and Otto Schmidt (Harley Quinn).
“The Last Green Arrow Story” Written by Jeff Lemire, Art by Andrea Sorrentino, Colors by Jordie Bellaire The acclaimed Green Arrow creative team from the New 52, New York Times Bestselling author Jeff Lemire (Sweet Tooth) and Andrea Sorrentino (Joker: Killer Smile) tell a transcendent final tale of Oliver Queen. In his older years, he requests to be left alone on the island where he was stranded so many decades ago. He’s gone there to connect to his own myth, his legacy, and to die in peace. But is it ever that simple for The Green Arrow?
The variant covers for this must-have collector’s item come from some of the most prolific artists in comics:

Garfield Logan still can’t believe he has powers that allow him to change into different animals, but the price of knowing that his parents kept this secret hidden from him just feels too high.
Both are seeking answers from the one person who seems to have them all figured out: Slade Wilson. When their paths converge in Nashville, Raven and Gar can’t help but feel a connection, despite the secrets they both try to hide. It will take a great amount of trust and courage to overcome the wounds of their pasts, but can they find acceptance for the darkest parts of themselves? Or maybe even love?

BATMAN & ROBIN AND HOWARD / AMETHYST: PRINCESS OF GEMWORLD SPECIAL EDITION FLIPBOOK This flipbook style sampler features first looks at two upcoming all-ages original graphic novels, Batman & Robin And Howard by bestselling author and illustrator Jeffrey Brown (Clumsy) and Amethyst: Princess Of Gemworld by New York Times bestselling authors Shannon Hale (Princess Academy and The Goose Girl) and Dean Hale (Rapunzel’s Revenge, Coauthor) with art by Asiah Fulmore.
To Damian Wayne, there is nothing more important than protecting the streets of Gotham City as Robin. But when he makes a critical mistake while out on patrol, Damian finds himself benched. And what’s more, Damian’s dad, Bruce Wayne–a.k.a. Batman–decides that starting over in a new school will be just the distraction Damian needs from his superhero routine. Certain that Gotham Metro Academy has nothing to teach him, Damian is completely unprepared for the challenge he finds in Howard–the smartest and most athletic kid in school. The boys’ rivalry is instantaneous and fierce…and both are sure only one of them can be the best in their class.
Amaya, princess of House Amethyst in Gemworld, is something of a troublemaker. She and her brother have great fun together until a magical prank goes much too far and her parents ground her…to Earth! They hope a whole week in the mundane world will teach her that magic is a privilege…and maybe washing dishes by hand will help her realize the palace servants should be respected. Three years later, Amy has settled into middle school and ordinary life. She doesn’t remember any other life. So, when a prince of the realm brings her home and restores her magical destiny, how will she cope?
Both Batman & Robin And Howard and Amethyst: Princess Of Gemworld will be available digitally and at participating bookstores on November 9, 2021.

This fall, pick up a powerful account of one of DC’s youngest and brightest heroes, Jessica Cruz, as she fights to overcome her fears and protect her family.
Debuting in September 2021, Unearthed: A Jessica Cruz Story is a new young adult graphic novel from DC that provides a fresh retelling of Jessica Cruz’s origin story, that captures the experiences of many immigrant families today. Like the Green Lanterns who came before her, Jessica must fight for what she believes in, and develop her willpower, determination, courage and tenacity—hallmarks of every Green Lantern—while facing overwhelming odds as xenophobia takes root in her hometown, Coast City.
This poignant and heartfelt tale about the trials that immigrants face in America is crafted by Pura Belpré Honor-winning author Lilliam Rivera (Never Look Back) and rising illustrator Steph C. Their modern refresh of Jessica’s story shows the budding hero take on challenges that ordinary immigrant families face every day. As she struggles with a new reality in Coast City, Jessica must overcome her fear to become a beacon of hope for her community.
“I’ve always been fascinated by origin stories and I’m so glad I got to write one for Green Lantern’s Latinx superhero, Jessica Cruz. Unearthed is a story of an everyday high school teenager who strives to make her parents proud. It’s also a story about immigration and how Jessica navigates debilitating anxiety while trying to keep her family together,” said Rivera. “Mexican artist Steph C.’s illustrations not only beautifully capture this struggle; she’s created stunning otherworldly realms that will leave readers breathless. I can’t wait for fans to see a side of Jessica Cruz never before seen.”
Unearthed: A Jessica Cruz Story marks both Lilliam and Steph’s debut project with DC and is scheduled to hit stores and online retailers everywhere books are sold on September 14, 2021.
Below is the official synopsis:
Unearthed: A Jessica Cruz Story
Written by Lilliam Rivera
Illustrated by Steph C.
On sale everywhere books are sold September 14, 2021
MSRP: $16.99
Jessica Cruz has done everything right. She’s a dedicated student, popular among her classmates, and has a loving family that has done everything they can to give her a better life in the United States. While Jessica is a part of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, allowing her to go to school and live in the U.S., her parents are undocumented. Jessica usually worries for her parents, but her fears and anxiety escalate as a mayoral candidate with a strong anti-immigration stance runs for office.
As the xenophobia in Coast City increases, Jessica begins to debate whether it’s worth renewing her status to stay in the U.S., or if her family would be safer and better off moving back to Mexico. And despite her attempts to lean on her friends and family, she finds herself constantly visited by visions of Aztec gods, one pulling her towards hope and the other towards anger.
But when her father is detained by I.C.E., Jessica finds herself being pulled into an abyss of fear. With her father gone and feeling helpless, Jessica must find her way out of her fears and ultimately become a voice for her community.

Data linkage
Data dichotomies Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden wrote for the FT about the UK's new approach to data outside the EU this week - which managed not to say what this new approach would actually be (especially for GDPR), and prompted comments that the narratives that privacy had dominated discussion and pitted innovation and privacy against one another weren't quite right... ICO baby Though perhaps the next Information Commissioner does need to make a distinction between innovation and privacy, as medConfidential and others have pointed out. Dowden's article kicked off the appointment process for the next Commissioner. (I interviewed the current one in 2019.) Doing so in an article behind a paywall and with no version on GOV.UK isn't a particularly great example of open government...
Open season But then it's not been the best of weeks for open government in the UK, with the news it's been censured by the Open Government Partnership, prompting a letter coordinated by the UK's Open Government Network (on whose steering group I sit). Though there remain some good examples of open government in the UK, and... Open day Tomorrow is Open Data Day, with lots of events planned. Speaking of events... Data Bites We held our seventeenth Data Bites this week, with some rugby-related fun to kick off and some very important budget analysis (which may have contributed to this), before four brilliant presentations. One of those was about better data visualisation, which was also the subject of...
Chart hits and misses This Computer Weekly article looking at good and bad #dataviz during Covid features a quote from me. Speaking of bad #dataviz... Mistake and fail pie My wonderful IfG colleagues are holding me somehow responsible for this particularly bad BBC Wales pie chart, which left me shocked. Another shocking fail which came to mind this week was... Johnson's new department The time when the UK government briefly renamed the business department to something quite unfortunate (though it turned out to be a flop). It wasn't quite the job Alan Johnson expected, but then you don't really get to apply for Cabinet roles...
Odd job Whereas you can apply to work in the Cabinet Office's new Information and Data Exchange, another new unit which there doesn't appear to be much information about. Like a number of recent developments (the Central Digital and Data Office, the integrated data platform) we have to comb press releases, minutes and job ads to find out what's going on (#opengovernment). There's also a deafening silence on... Certifiable The government's (welcome) review into vaccine passports. I wrote something about that for the IfG this week. And if you've not had enough of me... Strategic thinking I'm speaking at a Westminster Forum event next week, on the National Data Strategy. Something that was announced a few months ago, by Oliver Dowden.
Have a good weekend

How COVID-19 Has Impacted Prisoners
By Bailey Mullen, Mary Baldwin University Class of 2022
February 19, 2021
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/8b216dca0553167fee4bcb06a9e5e326/afe74fe2553d733a-42/s540x810/5beb66acac55c8652e5187b5c83d9c64acb3c1bb.jpg)
In March of 2020, countries across the globe seemed to pause in order to slow the spread of the novel Coronavirus. This resulted in many businesses having to shut down, employees and students trying to adapt to working from home, and some people to even lose their source of income entirely. As of February 17, 2021, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 485,070 deaths in the United States of America alone [1]. If you turn on the news, chances are you will hear something about the COVID-19 epidemic, no matter the channel or publisher. It seems you cannot escape hearing about it: it is incorporated into your favorite television shows, guidelines are posted on every store front, and there is probably a meme or two floating around the social media timeline of your choice. Despite all of this awareness, it seems many people have forgotten who else cannot escape COVID-19: America’s incarcerated population.
America has some of the highest rates of imprisonment which means that there are a lot of people behind bars. It is a difficult situation to balance because some of the people who are incarcerated are there because they have been convicted of at least one crime and therefore have a sentence that they are responsible for carrying out. However, some people who are sitting in jail may not be convicted yet and instead are awaiting trial and cannot afford or were not offered bail. Whatever their reason for being there, there is not a choice to just leave, quit, or serve time from home (unless you count parole or house arrest). The staff of the correctional facility do get to leave the premises and therefore may be exposed to the virus and accidentally bring it to the jail or prison. There are also inmates transferring facilities or new people coming in which may increase the chances that the virus may spread. There is a lot of risk for cross-contamination inside of these buildings between shared facilities, limited room, and necessary security measures such as pat-downs or cell searches from the guards. In fact, inmates are four times more likely than the rest of the United States to catch COVID-19 [2]. It is a difficult problem to get ahold of, especially when the virus’ side effects and infection rate are still being studied.
There are mixed responses from detention center administrations as well as the rest of the criminal justice system on the best way to handle the health of the incarcerated and the staff. Over three hundred thousand of those placed in state prisons have contracted the virus which has resulted in almost two thousand deaths [3]. To prevent this from spreading further, eleven state governors have put out executive orders to block new transfers into state prisons or allow for early release [4]. For those that are serving time in federal prisons, many inmates have been released to serve the remainder of their time on house arrest [5]. Many facilities have halted their work or rehabilitation programs in order to limit exposure to other inmates. While this does help limit exposure, it does bring controversy as these programs typically help inmates earn earlier paroles [6]. Some states, like California, are countering this by issuing out time credits for inmates that have not violated any rules [7]. Some states choose to do early release for their inmates whereas others may seem to keep inmates in longer because of the lack of ability to earn time off due to good behavior or participation in various programs.
Because of the way our criminal justice system is set up, states will continue to vary greatly on how they are handling this issue. Kansas has some of the highest rates of infection in their prisons with about sixty percent of inmates getting COVID [8]. According to the Crime and Justice Institute, since March of 2020 Kansas released about two hundred detainees awaiting their trial and put around six inmates on house arrest to home confinement during an outbreak [9]. In contrast, New York has about a five percent positivity rate in their prisons [10]. Their COVID prevention plan has included releasing low-risk inmates especially if they are high-risk, those serving the very end of their sentence, and a push to keep correctional facilities at fifty percent capacity [11]. Not every state has the structure or resources to make these changes, but it may be helpful to work towards something similar to reduce the spread.
An important case to remember is Estelle v. Gamble when looking in to your federal, state, or local corrections COVID prevention plans. This case primarily deals with the Eighth Amendment which protects prisoners from cruel and unusual punishment. The verdict decided that denying access to medical facilities when needed does violate this amendment [12]. It does not promise top of the line medical care, though. It will be up to us to ensure that this amendment does not get ignored. While it can be easy to forget about those who are incarcerated amidst all of the COVID-19 news stories, they still have rights as United States citizens and it is up to the people to ensure that this standard remains, even when it may be difficult to do so.

The following month — amid sustained outrage over the March 25 directive, which was revoked on May 10 — the DOH issued a report blaming the spread of the coronavirus in nursing homes on asymptomatic staffers.
Cuomo has also repeatedly attacked The Post for its hard-hitting reports on the nursing-home crisis, suggesting the coverage was politically motivated to “kill all Democrats.”
And during spectacularly ill-timed appearances Tuesday on MSNBC and CNN, Cuomo tried to blame for COVID deaths on former President Donald Trump, offering one quote that seems to now apply equally to his own administration in light of the James report.
“Incompetent government kills people. More people died than needed to die in COVID. That’s the truth,” he said.
James’ report does not increase the number of overall deaths in the Empire State from the coronavirus, which stands at an estimated 42,887 confirmed and suspected COVID-19 cases, according to Johns Hopkins University case tracker.
The state DOH puts the number at 34,579, but that tally only includes confirmed deaths.
New York’s nursing-home death toll from COVID-19 may be more than 50 percent higher than officials claim — because Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s administration hasn’t revealed how many of those residents died in hospitals, state Attorney General Letitia James announced Thursday.
In a damning, 76-page report, James also said that some unidentified nursing homes apparently underreported resident fatalities to the state Department of Health and failed to enforce infection-control measures — with more than 20 currently under investigation.
The bombshell findings could push the current DOH tally of 8,711 deaths to more than 13,000, based on a survey of 62 nursing homes that found the state undercounted the fatalities there by an average of 56 percent.
The report further notes that at least 4,000 residents died after the state issued a controversial, March 25 Cuomo administration mandate for nursing homes to admit “medically stable” coronavirus patients — which James said “may have put residents at increased risk of harm in some facilities.”
“As the pandemic and our investigations continue, it is imperative that we understand why the residents of nursing homes in New York unnecessarily suffered at such an alarming rate,” James said.
“While we cannot bring back the individuals we lost to this crisis, this report seeks to offer transparency that the public deserves and to spur increased action to protect our most vulnerable residents.”

In a sane world, Cuomo would be facing a death penalty sentence for mass murder and crimes against humanity. The communists tried to cover it up like a cat covering its turds in a sandbox. The stink was just too much, and when they went to empty the sandbox...well...someone was watching and there they were.

Cuomo and the legislature immunized them from both criminal and civil WuFlu liability in April’s budget.
BTW, Cuomo didn’t just send sick residents back to their facilities inspite of Fedzilla relaxing regs, Cuomo allowed sick staff to report to work until mid-May, when he abruptly ended the policy.
Nobody ever asks about that.

That figure was 56 percent higher than the numbers for those facilities published by the state Department of Health, which only published the number of people who passed away while still at the nursing homes at the time of their deaths, not those who were subsequently taken to a hospital and then died. This information was known back when it was happening. I read about it, probably here on FreeRepublic.

Proving intent is difficult. Proving criminally negligent homicide when you force nursing homes to accept people known to be infected with a disease that kills elderly folks at extremely high rates (~18% for those over 80 years) is TRIVIAL. On its face, it’s a clear and obvious slam dunk case. Each of them. Times tens of thousands of cases. The question then becomes not IF they’re guilty, but HOW MANY cases can be attributed to them. As a prosecutor, your easy answer is to charge with the minimum number of lives lost directly because of the policy. Whether that’s 10,000 deaths or 40,000 deaths isn’t that critical as the punishments will be massive either way.And they DESERVE it.

As part of the report, James’ investigators surveyed 62 nursing homes across the state and found that 1,914 residents from those facilities either died there or at nearby hospitals after testing positive for coronavirus or exhibiting symptoms of the deadly disease.”That’s what we are experiencing. The nursing homes are holding patients until they start to crash and then calling EMS to transport them out so they die elsewhere. We transported multiple people with DNR’s one of whom crashed before we got out of the parking lot.It has slowed down in our area, but we were transporting 4-5/ambulance/day for several weeks.

CORONA VIRUS Cuomo Follows Newsom in Easing COVID Restrictions After Biden Inauguration!“Right on cue.”Published on 25 January, 2021 Paul Joseph Watson Pacific PressNew York Governor Andrew Cuomo has followed Michigan, Chicago and California in announcing plans to ease COVID restrictions, prompting many conservatives to allege that the timing is political.
The Governor said in a press conference that the situation in relation to new cases and hospitalizations was improving, meaning lockdown measures could be relaxed soon.“Cuomo didn’t give further details on what type of restrictions he might loosen or what cluster zones might be eliminated or changed,” reports Syracuse.com.
“The state Health Department is reviewing data on the zones now and Cuomo said expects to have announcements in the coming days.”Respondents to the story said the move was politically timed to help Joe Biden ultimately claim victory over COVID.“Yep. Right on cue after Trump is out of office!” remarked one.

As we highlighted earlier, California Governor Gavin Newsom is also set to lift the stay-at-home order across all regions tomorrow based on data that’s not publicly available.“Michigan, Chicago, now California. It’s almost as if the “science” changed, once Biden became president? How convenient for Whitmer, Lightfoot, and Newsom?” tweeted Steve Cortes.“Using small businesses, churches, schools, and citizens as pawns in a crass political game is evil,” he added.

Oddly, I didn't think anything of it until I accidentally saw her duck out a side door to cough deeply into her coat sleeve. She was quiet about it but it was a deep one. This made me curious about the temp check ledger and holy shit... Her temp was 100.8 when she came in yesterday. I went back a day and her first check yesterday was 99.7 and then 100.1 at the last check. So, I kindly asked if she was ok (to be fair, she looked awful. Dark areas under her eyes, clearly suffering chills) and her immediate response was "I am NOT sick!" I stated she clearly was and I needed her to clock out. She wanted to blow up for about a second until she deflated, giving in. I told her she needed to get a test today and I need to see the results in some official form. Its unbelievable how selfish people can be. Its not like she has to fear loss of income. If you test positive, we pay you for three weeks at full pay until you get a negative test.
