Reading List, Beautiful Things (double) edition.
“The pleasure of the streets and London itself unfolding in the autumn chill; everything tingling with newness and risk, glitter of frost and glow of body heat, the shock of finding and holding what he wanted among millions of strangers.“ [Alan Hollinghurst, 'The Line of Beauty']
*
“People don’t want to be human, they want to be right. I wanted to be right.” On the joy of being wrong about yourself. [Stephanie Georgopulos, Human Parts at Medium]
"Everything is fun and everything is light and everything is rancor. Until suddenly, you are the one in danger.” Kelsey McKinney played the goose game [Deadspin]
"I almost died of happiness every time I saw him. I couldn’t believe a person this attractive and this smart and this nice existed and that we actually liked each other. I realized that I had never really liked 95 percent of the people I had dated. Though I didn’t believe in soul mates and still don’t, I finally understood what people meant when they talked about really loving someone and feeling close to them. I had always thought of men as these sort of things that, if you were straight and wanted to have sex, you just sort of had to contend with. Tor was like an actual person.” Fuck I loved this. [Sarah Miller, The Cut]
“Cora [Brooks] taught me that there are worse things than dying — that getting older is a process of losing your children to distance and coping with incontinence and memory loss, yes, but also of becoming more unapologetically yourself." [Devi Lockwood, The New York Times]
“There is very good research showing that if you attain extrinsic goals, like financial success, fame, or popularity, it’s actually like doing drugs: you need a bigger and bigger dose to get high.” On ambition [Katie Heaney, The Cut]
"I don’t spend a lot of time high-fiving, just like I don’t spend a lot of time agonizing when something goes wrong. I play the long game.” Kara Swisher on ambition [The Cut]
On eating a lot of sugar to stay off booze [Grace Lavery, Vice]
"The 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' Doublemeat Burger walked so Beyond Meat could run” [Madeleine Davies, Eater]
Van-life fail [Chris Wright, Outside]
"I am now terrified and deeply suspicious of edibles and heartbroken that my mother may have been right about drugs all along.” Today in “just because it’s legal doesn’t make it harmless” [Roxane Gay, Gay Mag at Medium]
In praise of the women who made the era of the erotic thriller [Abbey Bender, The Outline]
"My change of circumstance made me hyperaware of what I wanted everyone to see: a woman in charge of herself. A Strong Woman Doing Well On Her Own. A woman (I’m sorry) thriving.” Monica Heisey goes spinning after getting divorced. [The Guardian]
"But Sundays are no longer a day of forced noncommerce—everything’s open—or nonproductivity. Even if you aren’t asked to pull a weekend shift, work intrudes upon those once-sacred hours. The previous week’s unfinished business beckons when you open your laptop; urgent emails from a colleague await you in your inbox. A low-level sense of guilt attaches to those stretches of time not spent working.” On the loss of communal downtime [Judith Shulevitz, The Atlantic]
Tourism has never been “authentic” [Kyle Chayka, The Goods by Vox]
"iI I live another 41 years to avenge what has happened, it still won’t be enough.” This longread on chemotherapy is incredible [Anne Boyer, The Guardian]
"In my final few months of being 29, I’ve become obsessed with the gap between how special I thought I was – a typical by-product of being raised by loving parents – and how ordinary I’ve turned out to be. I’m taking driving lessons, but I’ve come to resent talking to anyone about something so common. So predictable.” [Jessica Brown’s TinyLetter] On perimenopause and the best fan money can buy [Jolie Kerr, The Goods at Vox]
The revolutionary pleasures of Lana Del Rey [Emma Garland, Vice]
"No longer dyeing my hair was like suddenly swallowing a million Valium. The shift in how people treated me was immediately palpable, but whatever sense of alienation this resulted in was balanced by a newfound lack of anxiety about the arrival of middle-agedness. No more fear about what it would be like. It was here now! I started noticing all the women around me who were naturally gray. I used to be like, Oh my God, do I look like that?and now I was like, Yeah, I do. Oh well.” [Sarah Miller, The Cut]
On being very excited about a piece of news that’s of little general interest [Rosa Lyster, Popula]
On falling asleep while watching Friends [Sarah Manavis, GQ]
Paintings by Frank Laws, documenting the architecture of East London housing [Huck Magazine]
50 horny photos of Bruce Springsteen [The Cut]
Jenny Odell at the Longform Podcast - I’ve been thinking about this for weeks.

Tyler Perry Has One Show Ending, A New Show Set To Debut & Another Show He's Reviving
Tumblr media
Tyler Perry has some updates for three of his TV shows. Find out which show is ending, a new show that’s coming down the pipeline and which series is getting a revival inside…
Tyler Perry’s wish to have one of his movies seen all around the world was granted when his crime thriller, A Fall From Grace, debuted on Netflix. After a week on the streaming service, Tyler said 26 million people watched the movie in the first seven days:

Say what you want about the wiggery in the film - folks watched the movie and that's his ultimate goal. Now, he's focusing on his TV shows.
First, Tyler’s show “If Loving You Is Wrong” - which debuted in September 2014 - will end after its fifth season on OWN. The fifth and final season premieres on March 10th at 10pm EST.
“We are grateful to Tyler Perry and the talented cast and crew for giving us five incredibly entertaining seasons,” OWN president Tina Perry said. “We can’t wait for fans to see the jaw-dropping storylines that are going to unfold this season. It delivers all the juicy drama like only Tyler Perry can.”
“If Loving You Is Wrong” follows a circle of friends and frenemies who find love and live in the same neighborhood. OWN announced the final season will reveal “some long-awaited answers to viewers’ burning questions” and will include “life-changing catastrophes that will leave the town reeling and changed forever.”
Sounds promising. Once “If Loving You Is Wrong” ends, “The Haves and the Have Nots” will be Tyler’s only remaining series on OWN.
While one show is ending, another show is set to debut...
According to Deadline, Tyler Perry's new comedy series "Assisted Living" just got the greenlight. The new series will star David Mann, Tamela Mann, J. Anthony Brown, Na’im Lynn, Courtney Nichole, Tayler Buck and Alex Henderson.
Here's a synopsis of the new series:
In Tyler Perry’s Assisted Living, after losing his job, Jeremy (Na’im Lynn), a patriarch of a young family with teenage children, decides to move to the backwoods of Georgia to help his crazy grandfather. Grandpa Vinny (J. Anthony Brown) has foolishly purchased a terribly run-down home for the elderly and he is in way over his head, but comedy ensues as Mr. Brown (David Mann) and Cora (Tamela Mann) show up at the right time as needy investors.
Production for "Assisted Living" as started at Tyler Perry Studios and is set to premiere on BET this summer.
And that's not the only show by Tyler coming to BET...
Issa revival!

LaVan Davis, Cassi Davis Patton, Lance Gross, Demetria McKinney, China Anne McClain, Larramie “Doc” Shaw, Keshia Knight Pulliam, and Allen Payne are all set to return for the reboot.
The revival will pick up five years later and it will focus on retired fire chief Curtis Payne (LaVan Davis) and his lovely wife Ella (Cassi Davis Patton) as they continue to navigate the problems of life with their quirky modern-day family. It's being promoted as the seventh season of the original series, which ran on TBS from 2006 - 2012.

Jimmy Rushing
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
James Andrew "Jimmy" Rushing (August 26, 1901 – June 8, 1972) was an American blues shouter, balladeer, and swing jazz singer from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, best known as the featured vocalist of Count Basie's Orchestra from 1935 to 1948.
Rushing was known as "Mr. Five by Five" and was the subject of an eponymous 1942 popular song that was a hit for Harry James and others — the lyrics describe Rushing's rotund build: "he's five feet tall and he's five feet wide". He joined Walter Page's Blue Devils in 1927 and then joined Bennie Moten's band in 1929. He stayed with the successor Count Basie band when Moten died in 1935.
Rushing said that his first time singing in front of an audience was in 1924. He was playing piano at a club when the featured singer, Carlyn Williams, invited him to do a vocal. "I got out there and broke it up. I was a singer from then on," he said.
Rushing was a powerful singer who had a range from baritone to tenor. He could project his voice so that it soared over the horn and reed sections in a big-band setting. Basie claimed that Rushing "never had an equal" as a blues vocalist, though Rushing "really thought of himself as a ballad singer." George Frazier, the author of Harvard Blues, called Rushing's distinctive voice "a magnificent gargle". Dave Brubeck defined Rushing's status among blues singers as "the daddy of them all." Late in his life Rushing said of his singing style, "I don't know what kind of blues singer you'd call me. I just sing 'em." Among his best-known recordings are "Going to Chicago", with Basie, and "Harvard Blues", with a famous saxophone solo by Don Byas.
Life and career
Rushing was born into a family with musical talent and accomplishments. His father, Andrew Rushing, was a trumpeter, and his mother, Cora, and her brother were singers. He studied music theory with Zelia N. Breaux at Oklahoma City's Douglass High School, and was unusual among his musical contemporaries for having attended college, at Wilberforce University. Rushing was inspired to pursue music and eventually sing blues by his uncle Wesley Manning and George "Fathead" Thomas, of McKinney's Cotton Pickers. Rushing toured the Midwest and California as an itinerant blues singer in 1923 and 1924 before moving to Los Angeles, where he played piano and sang with Jelly Roll Morton. Rushing also sang with Billy King before moving on to Page's Blue Devils in 1927. He, along with other members of the Blue Devils, defected to the Bennie Moten band in 1929.
Moten died in 1935, and Rushing joined Count Basie for what would be a 13-year tenure. Due to his tutelage under his mentor Moten, Rushing was a proponent of the Kansas City jump blues tradition, exemplified by his performances of "Sent for You Yesterday" and "Boogie Woogie" for the Count Basie Orchestra. After leaving Basie, his recording career soared, as a solo artist and a singer with other bands.
When the Basie band broke up in 1950 he briefly retired but then formed his own group. He also made a guest appearance with Duke Ellington for the 1959 album Jazz Party. In 1960, he recorded an album with the Dave Brubeck Quartet, known for their cerebral cool jazz sound, but the album was nonetheless described by the music critic Scott Yanow as "a surprising success."
Rushing appeared in the 1957 television special Sound of Jazz, singing one of his signature songs "I Left My Baby" backed by many of his former Basie band compatriots. In 1958 he was among the musicians included in an Esquire magazine photo by Art Kane, later memorialized in the documentary film A Great Day in Harlem.
In 1958 Rushing toured the UK with Humphrey Lyttelton and his band. A BBC broadcast with Rushing accompanied by Lyttelton's specially organised big band was released on CD in 2009.
In 1969 Rushing appeared in The Learning Tree, the first major studio feature film directed by an African-American, Gordon Parks.
Rushing's performing career ended after he became ill with leukemia in 1971. He died on June 8, 1972, in New York City, and was buried at the Maple Grove Cemetery (Queens), in Kew Gardens, Queens, New York.
Rushing was married twice. He had two sons, Robert and William, with his second wife, Connie, to whom he was married from the 1940s until his death. Connie Rushing is credited with two compositions on her husband's 1968 solo album, Livin' the Blues.
Rushing was one of eight jazz and blues legends honored in a set of United States Postal Service stamps issued in 1994.
Critical assessment
Rushing was held in high critical esteem during his career, and this has continued after his death. Whitney Balliett, jazz critic for The New Yorker, wrote of Rushing that "His supple, rich voice and his elegant accent have the curious effect of making the typical roughhouse blues lyric seem like a song by Noël Coward". The critic Nat Hentoff, who ranks Rushing as one of the "greatest blues singers," credits him as a seminal influence in the development of post–World War II popular black music. Hentoff wote that rhythm and blues "has its roots in the blues shouting of Jimmy Rushing...and in the equally stentorian delivery of Joe Turner..." Scott Yanow described Rushing as the "perfect big band singer," who "was famous for his ability to sing blues, but in reality he could sing almost anything." In an essay about his fellow Oklahoman, the writer Ralph Ellison wrote that it was "when Jimmy's voice began to soar with the spirit of the blues that the dancers – and the musicians – achieve that feeling of communion which was true meaning of the public jazz dance." Ellison said Rushing began as a singer of ballads, "bringing to them a sincerity and a feeling for dramatizing the lyrics in the musical phrase which charged the banal lines with the mysterious potentiality of meaning which haunts the blues." In contrast with Rushing's reputation, he "seldom comes across as a blues 'shouter,' but maintains the lyricism which has always been his way with the blues," wrote Ellison. According to Gary Giddins, Rushing "brought operatic fervor to the blues," and of his time with Count Basie notes that "just about every record they made together is a classic."
During his career Rushing was honored with many awards by music critics. He was a four-time winner of Best Male Singer in the Critic's Poll of Melody Maker and a four-time winner of Best Male Singer in the International Critic's Poll in Down Beat. His 1970 album, The You and Me That Used to Be, was named Jazz Album of the Year by Down Beat.

June 28, 2017: Obituaries
Sgt Dillon Baldridge, 22
Tumblr media
Sergeant Dillon C. Baldridge was killed in action and went to his eternal home Saturday, June 10, 2017. The 22-year-old soldier died from wounds sustained in Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan, while supporting Operation Freedom's Sentinel.
Baldridge was born July 18, 1994 in Raleigh, NC, and grew up in the neighboring town of Youngsville, where his friends remember him as funny, sensitive, and dedicated to serving others. At a young age, he decided to become a soldier, and he joined the Army right out of high school. He re-enlisted in 2016 saying, "I love this job too much to walk away from it."
He was a proud infantryman assigned to D Company, 1st Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd BCT. His best friend and fellow soldier Bill Walsh described him as an intelligent and motivated person who "always improved not only his own skills but the men around him." Another of Baldridge's fellow soldiers, Kage Weinstock, said Baldridge always had "the right words of wisdom," adding "Dillon would want us to live and love like he did. He would want us to be happy, smile more, keep pushing to meet our goals, follow our dreams…and wake up every day to take on the world."
More than anything, Baldridge loved his family. From the day he was born, he was adored by his parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles, and memories from his childhood still bring a wide smile to their faces. "As a young child, Dillon would just spontaneously belt out a song in the middle of a restaurant just to bring people joy," said his maternal grandmother Debbie Horan.
He is survived by his mother, Tina Palmer, and father, Christopher Baldridge. Also mourning this great loss are his step-father Tom Palmer, step-mother, Jessie Baldridge, and siblings Zachary Palmer, Isabel Palmer, Ethan Baldridge, Lucas Baldridge, and Shelby Baldridge.
Baldridge was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman Badge and the Army Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster. His prior awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal with three oak clusters, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, the NATO Medal, and the Expert Infantryman Badge.
