Eurovision 2006 - Number 42 - Rudi - "Qyteti im"
youtube
Rudi, Rudi, Rudi, Rudi. Albania's self-proclaimed king of Hip Hop, real name Rudens Gega, is having a second crack at FiK and thus Eurovision. Most importantly he's presenting me with the ultimate 'I've heard this before' moment I've had with the national finals yet.
I'm sure the central riff at the heart of Qyteti Im (My City), isn't only a sample, but it's a sample that's been used in mainstream hip hop song before. It's not just that it's close to Eminem's Lose Yourself and Coolio's Gangsta's Paradise. I've heard this tune previously, probably as a main theme to a film, and my brain and search skills are failing me - as is Shazam. It's frustratingly on the precipice of recognition, but I'm not there yet.
It may be that Qyteti Im has been used in a much wider context and that's why I know it, but no matter how much I strain the little grey cells attached to my ear drums, I've not worked it out yet.
The song itself is rap over a choral and classical backing (arrangement by Jetmir Mehmeti). Rudi's rap is a little poem of love to his home town of Shkodra near the border with Montenegro in the north of the country, on the shores of the lake that bears its name, Lake Skadar. It speaks of a life spent in a relationship with a place that has seeped into the pores of Rudi, shaped him, consoled him and kept him safe.
Neither Eurovision nor FiK are the natural home of hip hop or rapping. Therefore it will come as no surprise to find that this song - one of Rudi's most famous - did not qualify for the final. He was eliminated for the Festivali i Këngës judges after this is lone semi-final appearance. It could be that this is this because of the proximity to an already famous song, but it's more likely that this is just not what FiK judges like and know. He had made it to the final once before, two years prior rapping alongside Ingrid Jushi
Even if this is a rip-off of other, more famous hip-hop tunes it's still a a fantastic combination of orchestra, choir and rap in honour of a connection we all feel to our homes in one way or another.
Rudi himself has had several albums and collaborations since, though it's difficult to gauge how much success he's had. The comments on his videos are laudatory, but he's made little no impact on any database of music or even Albanian Wikipedia. He's still make music, though to what audience I don't know.

Ch. 36
Shade’s Pov
I try to rehearse what I'm going to talk about. I have to sound like I have a master degree in genetics. Which is going to be hard for me since I haven’t been in school for like 10 years. So my education is basically just bare minimum high school.
“Not going to wish us luck love.” I turn to see the Hobie and the others look like they're ready to head up. They got what they needed to find and destroy colliders that scattered. They are going to head out first before us. Miles, 42, and Peter are going to Collider 3. Judging from emotions that both him and 42 were giving off it seems like they have beef with this Doc Ock lady since she might be there.
Ben, Pav, and Timothy going to Collider 4.
Jess, Hobie, and Gwen are going to Collider 5.
So it is like a three way team for each Collider so we can’t vucked up on this. But then again…I try to not think negatively, it's just kind of hard when your world hates you 99% of the time. So being hopeful is hard for me.
“ We don’t believe in luck coolio spider, luck has never been on our side.” Kuro responds to me. The kids smirked at me like they knew all about it. Then again I don't think a lot of heroes believe in luck either.
“Well, wishful thinking is never going to stop us.”
“Yeah! We're going to make sure those assholes stop messing up your earth.”  Miles exclaimed, pumping his fist. 42 just rolled his eyes with a smirk so did Gwen and Pav. laugh about this, I can tell they try to cheer me up and themselves abit. They're nervous about the mission, I can sense it but they're trying not to show it. Sometimes I forget there are just kids, part of me is sad that they have to do this but…I believe in them.
I couldn’t help but hug them all, I know I only knew them for only a few weeks. I don’t want anything to happen to them. I started to see them as friends. Something I haven’t had in years. The fact that they want to help me still surprised me.
“You guys promise you come back in one piece ok?”
They all nodded and Hobie brought me in with an arm around my shoulder. “awww , it looks like we are growing on you aren’t we.”
“ Baka! We just don’t want to see you all dead! Coolio spider, ghost spider, spicy spider, blood pits, and samochi…” Kuro said as she pointed at each one of them with a growl. She points to Peter and Jess “ you two spiders have kids? You better come back to them in one piece, or I will never forgive you!” a little rude but we can tell she cares, I can care. I push Kuro back into my body with sigh
“J-Just come back ok? Hey! after all this I treat you all to some bread.”
“Cool, we have a victory feast after all this.” Pav calm, I saw Jess, Ben and Peter walk up to us.
“We're going to head out to give you a head start, you and Miguel should be able to do this interview and be able to hack the main one once it destroys you earth should be fine now.” Jess stated I nodded. We can finally end this. We got to end this.
“You guys also be safe and thank you. All of you.”
Jess, Ben, and Peter nodded with smiles as I saw them all head out. Miguel then walks up seeing if i’m ready since we have another hour so we can head over to Alchemax HQ. I never really been nervous on these life or death missions. I have done so many times that I'm not fazed by it, but the fact that there are people that are actually helping me, fighting for me. It's a different feeling. I-I don’t know what I do if anything happens to them. I know they must do it a bunch of times.
I just can't help but worry.
“You shouldn’t worry about them.”
My thought was interrupted when Miguel spoke, he must nosticed my worryness. I’m not the only one. He was giving off worry also, for a guy who is mostly stoic he really gives off a lot of emotion.
“I have faith in them. They look young but Miles and them can handle themselves. They prove it to me over and over again. Even though they can be brats sometimes.” he said with a smirk.
“ Didn’t think the big spider was joking.” Kuro pops out onto my head luckily there are less people on the street so we wouldn’t be noticed but still we need to watch it. Not everyday there is a talk shit grinning bunny on my head.
“Trying to make light of things, not good at it.”
I Smile “ well at least you tried to make it light since we're going back to the den of lions. Again. Just you and me this time.”
“And me.” me and Miguel’s voice widened from Blackheart's voice. We didn’t see him and I can’t ‘hear’ him. Miguel was going to say something till I saw him shiver then I began to feel a chill under me. I look down to see the shadow look darker till a pair of red eyes stare from it.
“What you coming with us”
“ Yes, because you two are going to distract them, while I hack the collider and destroy it. Since you guys are too dumb to hack into.”
Man talks about a guy who thinks he all that. I can hear Miguel growled by the comment. I don’t blame him.
“Well, since you are so great, why did you destroy the collider?”
We heard him huffed “ did know they had the foresight to create four more of them and getting outside help from yours and that brat of your”
“Don’t call Miles a brat.”
Why not? You thought of him like that before.”
“Ok both of you can stop that! We have a mission, remember?” I want to stop this argument. Whatever Blackheart has against Miguel he needs to drop it for now. Feeling his disdain for Miguel doesn’t help me focus on the mission. I heard him sigh.
“ Fine,  you two just don’t vuck things up. The six are there, getting ready for Tempest’s cognition. So Arachidqueen should be doing her annoying tour and interview.”
“Ok I get Lyla to make something so we can commute.” Miguel said but before I could say anything I had a massive headache. Grab my head. I wasn't the only one, as I looked at Miguel who was grabbing his head as well.
‘What the void was that?!’
‘What the shock?’
My eyes widened when I heard Miguel’s voice in my head.
“ Now we can talk without causing too much suspension. Not like your Lyla is any better with hidden calls.”
‘Shut up about my Lyla, yours is a flying eyeball demon thing.’  Miguel barks back in our head, why is he so loud?! I swear if I could see blackheart he would be rolling his eyes.
“ Anyway, I should be able to communicate but the farther were away we are. So stay alert.”
We made it to Alchemax HQ, still having the sense of evil corporation as usual. I will never get used to coming here. I will have to put Kuro to sleep, I don't want there to be any alarm. Also don't want them to notice that I'm woozy like last time. So I tell Kuro to go to sleep, with fewer people in my head during the mission.
The dizziness always hits hard when you turn off half your brain. Miguel held near him so I wouldn't fall over.
‘Does that always happen to you when you put Kuro to sleep?’ he asked through my head. I nodded as I grabbed my head to get a sense of stability back.
‘I can’t use my power if you haven't guessed yet. So you going do the protecting. Sorry I'm turning damsel for you. I hate being weak.’ and I forgot we were sharing our minds right now.
‘Your not weak Shade and I got you. We just have to destroy the colliders.”
I nodded as we once again entered the lion den. It looked different from the last time I was here, as they were getting ready for Tempest’s inauguration as a true queen. As much as I think she native princess, she doesn't deceive to be used as a tool like her mother.
As we walked in we saw the same lady from last time we were here. She was waving at us to come to her.
“Hello! Mr. and Ms. Applebottom. We've been waiting for you. We are so glad that you are invited to join us in Alchemax.” Sam said as she shook ours hands. Miguel smiles at her warmly put on his acting skills.
‘I hate these names.’
‘Blackheart, did you make that name?’
‘ No, Lyla did. I didn’t care what you would been called’
Miguel spoke  “The pleasure is all ours. We were curious why you all were so eager for us to join us.”
“Well looking at your paperwork when you all were doing the tour, we were just so impressed.” Sam led us to the elevator, me and Miguel entered but Sam didn’t.
“Your interviewer will join you shortly. Please wait for her on the 20th floor.”
Then the doors close, leaving us to head up alone. I took a deep breath, it was like I was suffocating every time I’m here. I felt someone hold my hand and I looked down. It was Miguel’s hand held mine.
‘Your ok, we can do this. The others are fighting for your earth. We just have to play, are parts ok?’
I couldn’t help but blush from him holding my hand. He feels so warm and I want to…
‘ Shade, focus. Once this is over you don’t have to deal with those urges.’
My eyes widen hearing Blackheart’s voice
‘Wait, you know about that-’
I was going asked Blackheart how does he know that till the elevator stop but it wasn’t the 20th floor. It was 10th. Me and Miguel were both confused till we felt the chill that Blackheart had on us disappear as we saw the black shadow move away from us.
‘ This is my stop. You won’t hear from me, but you two should still be able to ‘talk’ to each other in your heads. Just keep them distracted.’ We saw Black leave us alone and saw the black shadow go away. I turn to see Miguel grab his head in pain. Something tells me, blackheart said something to him.
“You ok?”
“Yeah, he is not the most friendly person.”
I bet, I was going to ask what he said to him since I figured he told Miguel something that he didn't want me to hear for some reason. I’m going to have a word with him after this all over. The door soon opened to the 20th floor. I thought someone would be waiting for us but there was no one here making me more nervous.
‘Hey, do you have things those kids have? I think they call it a spider sense?’ I asked if it would really be helpful for something like this. Miguel shook his head.
‘ It's the one thing I wish I had.’
We walked down the hallway praying to the Great Ones that this isn’t a trap. We walk up to what looks like a memorial for all their fallen scientists. I didn’t take care of those who die in their company. Not that changes my opinion of them, something about this feels like propaganda and sure enough it was. Seeing that blame me for the attack all those years ago. I look at the picture of the scientist and my eyes fall on Patrick's picture. I couldn’t help but touch it.
“That's your friend?”
I forgot for a moment that Miguel was with me. I looked at him and he gave me a remorseful look. He saw how Patrick died, so this just hurt alot.
“Yeah, it sickened me to honor him like this. Like he was some kind of martyr and-” I stopped myself from talking because at the same time I was looking at the other pictures and one of them caught my eye.
It was a picture of Miguel O’Hara .
Miguel also saw the picture and his eyes widened.
‘You have a variant here?!’
‘I’m just as surprised as you. There was nothing on this earth that indicated that there was a me on this Earth.’
Miguel still stares at the picture. He looks just like Miguel, only wearing sunglasses too. Miguel gave off emotion of shock and confusion, I mean seeing yourself dead for the second time in your life does make you traumatized so I don’t blame him for being taken back by this.
‘I didn’t look too deep on your earth. I should figure there is one here since there is a Tempest, xina, and Dana. Both our Earths have more in common than I thought.’
“Sorry we kept you all waiting”
Both Miguel and my eyes widen from the voice. I knew that voice, the one that would give me chills everytime I heard it . We turn to see Penny and Tempest standing behind us.
Great, this became ten time harder
~
Miguel’s pov
Shock great. Why is she here?! I would think we would have to deal with Arachnidqueen again, not the leader of the six. Last time we talked she was being reasonable. But the most reasonable people are the most dangerous, before I was able to say anything I felt something around my throat. Like the same feeling the last time I was here.
‘Shade…’
‘Her hands are around our throats. Try to act like you don’t feel it. Otherwise she my expect something’
‘Noted’ I put on my fakest smile, something I learned from work at Alchemax. Having to work with co-workers trying to kill you does that to you. I put out my hand to shake hers.
“Oh it is an honor to meet you Miss. Penny.” Penny just looked at my hand. She looked like she didn’t want to shake my hand. She just bowed slightly while Tempest shook my hand.
“Sorry, shaking hands is not my thing. Touch people isn’t…the greatest feeling for me.” Penny then beckons to follow her and Tempest. “But anyway, I'm glad you two are here. You took an invitation that was very wise of you. You would have missed a great opportunity.”
Why get the feeling that sounded like a threat?
“I hope you don’t mind if the empress Tempest joins us? There have been…some trouble at the castle.”
Both me and Shade couldn’t help but cringe from what she said. I mean we barged into her room, having a yelling match and almost hurt her. So that makes sense. I saw Tempest looking at me, I hope she doesn't figure out that I'm Spider-man. I didn’t think that through when I took off my mask, it also doesn’t help that the picture of earth 2424 Miguel is right behind me, glad i’m blocking their view of it. That is going to be hard to explain.
“You look familiar. Have I seen you before?” she asked. Before I could say anything. Shade grabbed my arm, hugging me like a doting wife.
“Oh you must have. He sure has a handsome face.isn’t that right hun?” I played along and hugged her back trying to look like I love my wife the same.
Tempest smiled thinking none of it. Penny also smiles trying to act normal but the feeling is so off. Now I understand why Shade is getting a bad vibe from her.
We enter a broad room, it looks dark and evil. Something an evil corporation would have. Dark rooms, barely any light, have multi chairs but probably only two people are in here. Something that use to deal with working under Tylor and how the higher ups were trying to be the most evilest thing ever. Look back at it, I feel so dumb not catching on.
Penny and Tempest sat on the other side of the table while me and Shade down. I saw a few things floating around us. Trays of food and drinks float down.
“Would you like anything to eat or to drink? We're waiting for our third person but he's running abit late.”
‘A third person?’
‘Maybe it's Arachnidqueen?’ I heard Shade say in my head. She then turn back her attention to Penny “I would just have a cup of water if you don’t mind.” Penny then ‘poured’ the glass of water and gave one to each one of us. She then pulled out a holo file, something that was similar to my earth. I guess this Alchemax holds all the good tech.
“Well… Mr. Applebottom. According to your file you are a Geneticist. very high class one. We have lost a lot of what Geneticists do to attacks from our enemies and we need some to help with issues that have been affecting us.”
“Effecting you how?” I asked, I know the real reason: they want me to perfect the compound they've been using. Like that going to happen, I saw what that stuff can do. You are going to be lucky to get any powers and if you do…what are the chances you don’t end up like Penny.
“We want to help advance the sector and its people.” she turn to Tempest
“Our Empress will be the true Empress during tomorrow's ceremony and I want her people to be safe and comfortable for their future. One way is by getting rid of some genetic flaws.”
“Genetic flaws?” I don’t like the sound of that.
‘She wants everyone to have compound R in them’ I look at Shade and she is right , it doesn't take genius to figure that out. But why? Would it be more efficient just only having a few with these kinds of powers? Or is this…something else.
“There are people in this world that cause problems for the reason of us. I’m not saying that this gene is acceptable but for the sake of the future of this Sector and our world we want to make sure it has everlasting peace.”  she said with a sip.
‘She is not telling the whole truth.’
I nodded in both Penny’s words and Shade’s.
“But, there are other issues I would like to discuss. She then pulls up a picture of Shade or at least when Shade is in her hero outfit Venomgirl. Some of the videos show her in that symbiote form destroying and killing some of the police. The one that was eye was the same one I saw in Shade’s memories where she killed Patrick when he was the lizard.
I check on Shade who is trying her best to put on a fake face. I look down to see her hands turn into claws betting she wants to reach over across the table and attack Penny for show us this. Lucky, there under the table so Penny and Tempest can’t see it. I put my hands over hers to trying to calm her down.
‘Yeah, I know it messes up, but don’t blow our cover, the mission, remember?’
‘I KNOW! But…’
“Sorry I’m showing you this but I need to explain the dire circumstances we were in with her. Venomgirl. You all know she has been number one target for years. Mainly, she has the underground terrorist group U.N.I.T and demonic entities helping her. We also would like your help stopping them." We turn our attention back to Penny to listen to what she was saying till a door opens up, we look toward the door. Tempest brightens up while Penny looks at the man with a grim look.
“I see that you two started without me. I do apologize for my lateness. I was dealing with other matters that I didn't think would take so long.”
I'm glad I'm wearing my sunglasses because I couldn't help but glare at the man. He looked just like Tylor but his hair was brown and has green eyes. I know this isn’t him but my gut tells me he is just like Tylor. Haven’t meant a Tylor variant that’s a saint.
“I’m glad you two were able to make it. I’m the president of Alchemax, Andrew Stone.” he then walked over to shake my hand with a twisted grin. The same grin that I want to deck Tylor in the face when he drugged me with Raptured. I bite and shake his hands, I must gripped his hand a little too hard and he flinched abit by my grip. I let go before I break his hand as much as I want to. He causes so much pain for Shade and this Earth.
“You are stronger than you look.”
“I get that alot.”
Andrew then sat down next to Tempest.
‘Why does she have her hand on his neck?’ I gave Shade a quick glance at what she meant. Never getting used to talking in the head.
‘It is her power, Penny has these hands that you can’t see, but right now we each have one on our throats. She has a habit of doing that to people,  I did note that there were no hands on Tempest. In fact the hands were avoiding her all together.’
“Well, you two. Let's get down to business.” he then turned to Tempest “You going to stay Tempest? You should get some rest for the big event tomorrow.”
Tempest was about to say something till Penny beat her to the punch “I was the one who invited her here. There have been issues in the castle so I want to keep an eye on her. As a ‘hero’ I think it was the best course of action to protect her. Or do you have any injections, father?”
From the bitterness in her tone, something tells me they don’t get along. It is just so awkward that me and Shade are between them. Family drama is not my strong suit. He glared at Penny from her comment. Reminds me of when I got the upper hand on Tylor when I took over half the company.
“Fine, you can stay Tempest.” Tempest nodded as all three of them turned their attention back to us. “We hope you take are offer, for the sake of all are sectors”
“We understand, but why so keen to rewrite genes? I know there is a civil war going on in other sectors. And who know what chemical warfare that they been using? I don’t really see how this benefit you all?” Shade said trying to keep asking question to buy the others some more time.
‘How much longer do you think the others need?’
‘Lyla didn’t give me a signal yet. Nor had Blackheart done anything. We probably would have felt the whole building shake or something.’
“Miss, Applebottom. We just want to reassure you that things go in your favor. We are chosen in the eye of the Great ones. To not move forward is be true crime for you and your friends.”
‘Friends?’  me and Shade thought at the same time. Andrew smirked as he then brought four holo screens in front of us. My eyes widened when I saw others being attacked.
Miles, 42, and Peter were fighting 1610 Doc Ock and the dr. Rose guy. Ben, Pav, and Timothy were fighting Kane. I believe his name was.
Jess, Hobie, and Gwen were fighting Archnidqueen and that battleready guy. The last video was Blackheart fighting another guy. Someone we haven’t seen before, Blackheart looks very injured, something that is not a good demon.
‘Why is he showing us this?!’ I asked to mainly myself
‘Just-just play dumb!’ Shade then spoke up
“W-What is this? Who are these people? Are they also from U.N.I.T?” Shade asked, trying act dumb but something tells me that it was not going to work.

Hey guys, admin here. After watching the wildly successful Across The Spider-Verse movie, it only occurred to me that Earth-42 is the literal personification of a true gangster’s paradise. Not only that, but Earth-42 Miles gives off mad Coolio vibes. Hell, every time I see his picture, this song immediately comes to mind. No joke.

The Rap Grammy Nominations Are Weird As Hell | Nov 25, 2020 11:12 AM BY TOM BREIHAN
The very first time that the Grammy Awards recognized rap music, it was an utter fiasco — a clear case of an aging pop-music establishment failing to understand this vital new youth music that had sprung up and rewritten the rules. For the 1989 awards show, the Grammys added one rap category, Best Rap Performance. DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince won it for “Parents Just Don’t Understand,” beating out LL Cool J and Salt-N-Pepa and Kool Moe Dee and JJ Fad. The show didn’t deign to recognize Public Enemy, N.W.A, EPMD, Slick Rick, Big Daddy Kane, Eric B. & Rakim, or Ice-T, all of whom had released classic albums within the voting window. The award wasn’t televised, and most of the nominees, Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince included, skipped the show, attending a “Boycott The Grammys” party instead.
Since that night, the history of rap at the Grammys has been a series of baffling, embarrassing decisions. It’s Steely Dan winning Album Of The Year over The Marshall Mathers LP. It’s Gretchen Wilson winning Best New Artist over Kanye West. “It’s weird and it sucks that I robbed you.” It’s also a history of rappers getting angry over the Grammys: “I never let a statue tell me how nice I am,” “You think I give a damn about a Grammy?” In 2019, Drake showed up to accept Best Rap Song. In his acceptance speech, he talked about how the Grammy voters weren’t necessarily the right people to define rap success. The broadcast cut him off mid-speech. Earlier this year, Kanye West, a man who once cared more about Grammy Awards than anyone else not named Neil Portnow, tweeted a video of himself pissing on one of his Grammys. (The Grammys still nominated West this year, for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album.)
Yesterday, the Grammys nominated Freddie Gibbs and the Alchemist’s Alfredo in the Best Rap Album category. That’s great! Freddie Gibbs is a great underground rap success story, a guy who bet on himself and kept doing great work in his own lane even after multiple major-label situations fell apart. Gibbs has never made a hit song in his life, and he’s gotten himself into a position where he doesn’t need to make hit songs — where he can just follow his instincts and keep his own style intact. Alfredo isn’t my favorite rap record of the year. (Even in the field of Alchemist-produced 2020 rap albums, I’d give the slight edge to Boldy James’ The Price Of Tea In China.) But the nomination for Alfredo is still a very cool surprise, the kind of thing that I would’ve never expected to see from the Grammy nominating committee.
youtube
And yet Gibbs’ nomination doesn’t exactly announce a new golden age of Grammy rap consideration, a time when Recording Academy voters are finally figuring out how to approach the genre. Instead, his nomination points toward something else: An institutional recognition of middlebrow, middle-aged, respectable rap music.
All of this year’s Best Rap Album nominees are Black men between the ages of 35 and 47. The oldest nominee is Nas, who is now on his fifth Best Rap Album nomination and who has never won the award. (The Best Rap Album Grammy didn’t exist in 1994, when Nas released Illmatic, but there’s no way in hell that Nas would’ve won it anyway. The Academy would’ve given the award to Coolio’s It Takes A Thief or something.) The youngest nominee is D Smoke, a former high school Spanish teacher who is also the brother of the TDE R&B singer SiR. D Smoke made his way into Grammy contention after winning the first season of Rhythm + Flow, the Netflix rap-competition show. (Two of the three judges from Rhythm + Flow, Cardi B and Chance The Rapper, have won Best Rap Album themselves. T.I., the other judge, has been nominated three times and never won.)
youtube
D Smoke isn’t exactly a revered or popular rapper, and I have’t seen anyone calling his perfectly-OK album Black Habits a masterpiece, though the man has certainly done better than anyone could’ve expected from a rap reality-show winner. But D Smoke raps exactly like a diet version of Kendrick Lamar, so his nomination works as a clear indication that the Grammy voters really, really wish they had a Kendrick album to nominate. D Smoke is also up for Best New Artist, alongside fellow rappers Chika, Megan Thee Stallion, and (I guess) Doja Cat. Presumably, Megan’s Good News would also be nominated if it had come out early enough to be eligible. Meanwhile, Chika hasn’t released an album, and Doja Cat is nominated in the pop categories, not the rap ones.
Instead, then, we’re looking at five guys hovering around the age of 40, all of whom are respected technicians with boom-bap inclinations. Jay Electronica, who’s nominated for A Written Testimony and who should probably be considered the front-runner, is technically a New Orleans native, but nobody thinks of him as a Southern rapper. (Jay-Z is all over A Written Testimony, to the point where anointing Jay Electronica feels a bit like throwing awards love to Jay-Z in a year with no Jay-Z album.) All the albums up for Best Rap Album are, at the very least, solid. A couple of them, Alfredo and A Written Testimony, are very good. But this is still a remarkably stodgy list — one that shows that the whole middle-aged respectability fetish that’s long plagued the Grammys is now embedded in its rap voting wing.
Freddie Gibbs and Nas and Jay Electronica and D Smoke and Royce Da 5’9″ are all gifted rappers who have done great work. Most of them could justifiably be considered legends. But none of them really show the world where rap music is, let alone where it’s going. By recognizing those albums, the Grammys have pointedly elected not to recognize something like Lil Baby’s My Turn, which is probably 2020’s most popular album in any genre and which is also a fine example of the 808-heavy depressive melodic-goo rap music that currently dominates the genre’s mainstream.
youtube
Other hugely popular, artistically important albums are also absent: Lil Uzi Vert’s Eternal Atake, Roddy Rich’s Please Excuse Me For Being Antisocial, Polo G’s The Goat, Gunna’s Wunna, Rod Wave’s Pray 4 Love. Instead, the rap albums getting nominated are the 2020 equivalents of the Steely Dan album that famously beat Eminem. That’s not an indictment of the nominated albums. It’s an indictment of the stuff the Recording Academy values. It’s also a cautionary look of how things might look if the Recording Academy ever gets its way, if rap comes to rely on accepted ossified skill-sets instead of its current state of constant, furious stylistic evolution.
As someone who’s around the same age as this year’s Best Rap Album nominees, I’m not all that amped to see emotionally troubled, pill-gobbling 20-year-olds dominating rap music. But those kids are crucially moving the genre past whatever old men like me might want it to be. Fortunately, there’s at least one Grammy category that has done a pretty good job capturing where things are right now, and that’s Best Rap Song. The list of nominations there — Lil Baby’s “The Bigger Picture,” Roddy Ricch’s “The Box,” Drake’s “Laugh Now, Cry Later,” DaBaby’s “Rockstar,” and Megan Thee Stallion’s “Savage” — isn’t necessarily perfect, but it’s a fairly accurate representation of the kind of rap that moves people right now. I don’t know why the division between the Best Rap Album and Best Rap Song nominees is so stark. Maybe it’s a signal that the album is increasingly irrelevant. Maybe it reflects two different voting bodies. Either way, it’s striking.
youtube
Look, the Grammys are weird. They are always going to be weird. Fiona Apple’s Fetch The Bolt Cutters should’ve been the biggest lay-up in the world, but it isn’t up for Album Of The Year. Instead, the Academy’s voters went for Coldplay and Jacob Collier and a deluxe edition of a Black Pumas album that didn’t even come out in the eligibility period. “Rockstar” and “Savage” are both up for Record Of The Year, but Post Malone’s Hollywood’s Bleeding is the only album that’s even rap-adjacent that’s nominated for Album Of The Year this year. I thought for sure that Lil Baby’s My Turn would be the token rap album that would inevitably lose to Taylor Swift. Instead, we didn’t even get one of those, and My Turn got snubbed even in its own category. Nothing makes sense.
But this year’s Best Rap Albums nominations still show a weird alignment between Grammy Voters and a certain streak of real-hip-hop rap conservatism. Watch out for that. Nothing good, except maybe a Freddie Gibbs Grammy win, will come out of that.
FURIOUS FIVE
1. Roc Marciano – “Downtown 81” It’s not on streaming services yet, but Roc Marciano’s new album Mt. Marci is out in the world now, and it is marvelous. (I can’t tell you whether the digital download is worth the $40 that Marci is charging on his website. Make your own financial decisions.) Right now, the only song out for general consumption is one of the few that Marci didn’t produce himself. (It’s a Jake One beat.) But otherwise, “Downtown 81” is exactly the sort of laid-back, intricately worded deadpan splendor that you can expect to hear on the LP, whenever it goes wide. So maybe that’s worth the price of a full tank of gas.
2. Meek Mill – “GTA” (Feat. 42 Dugg)
Meek Mill released his Quarantine Pack EP on Friday, and the track currently getting the big push is the downbeat Lil Durk collab “Pain Away.” But the real thrill here is in hearing Meek and 42 Dugg getting bracingly urgent over a Detroit-ass bassline.
3. Chief Keef & Mike Will Made-It – “Status” Sosa and Mike Will have evidently chosen to name their new song after this column. Gentlemen, I see this tribute, and I appreciate it. I love you too.
4. Willie The Kid & V Don – “Mother Of Pearls” (Feat. Eto) This is pretty.
5. Statik Selektah – “Play Around” (Feat. Conway The Machine, 2 Chainz, Killer Mike, Allan Kingdom, & Haile Supreme)
Once upon a time, maybe 13 years ago, I was apparently such a recognizable and influential part of the New York rap press that Statik Selektah noticed me at an MOP show, introduced himself, and tried to get me to listen to his mix CD. All these years later, Statik is a globally acknowledged boom-bap specialist with enough juice to put three of the world’s greatest middle-aged rappers on a track together. I’m proud of Statik. I bet he gets nominated for a Grammy someday.

Note
so i’m new to indycar but my brother just got us both tickets for pocono so what’s the tldr on the sport? who’s your favorites? also who’s the shitty drivers personality/beliefs wise to stay away from?
i know you said tl;dr but i literally can’t be brief in this context so i’m just gonna give you a short little profile of each driver (just the ones you’ll see racing at pocono) in order of the current championship standings (also i’ve realized i have a hard time explaining indycar to people who don’t already know formula one because i make a lot of comparisons so if you don’t watch formula one just ignore those parts i’m sorry):
1. josef newgarden: basically the personification of a golden retriever puppy. super high energy, gets along with everyone, and a super talented and FAIR driver (see: the newgarden move). he won the championship in 2017 and is currently leading this year’s championship by 16 points
2. alexander rossi: confirmed trump supporter, comes off as an arrogant asshole in interviews, but everyone loves him because of his talent. it’s so hard to hate him because he’s literally that good (here’s an example, and another example), i honestly think he could make max verstappen weep if they were on the same terms
3. simon pagenaud: quickly becoming my all time favorite driver (i love almost everyone on the grid but as i’ve now met simon twice i think he’s my top fave). he won the indy 500 this year and the championship in 2016. he’s very quirky and goofy, kind of like an older version of josef. team penske truly needs will power’s chilled out & relaxed persona to dilute the feral energy from josef & simon lmfao (here is a video that really captures his essence)
4. scott dixon: the most successful driver on the current grid and one of the most successful in history. i don’t know much about him personally but he seems like a father figure to whoever his teammate is (felix this year) and he has a really cute family too
5. will power: the old, relaxed energy to mellow out team penske. he had a streak of success in the early 2010′s and kind of had a reputation as an arrogant asshole around that time but i think he’s gotten a lot better since then. he won the indy 500 for the first time last year, and the championship in 2014
6. ryan hunter-reay: nicknamed “captain america”, another dad figure on the grid, has a pretty decorated career. don’t know much else about him but he’s very highly respected on the grid, josef newgarden once said he is “just too polite”
7. takuma sato: very sweet and level-headed, 42 years old and still going strong, has a really comforting presence on the grid. in races he’s generally in the midfield but is capable of surprises, like winning in alabama this year and very shockingly winning the 500 in 2017
8. graham rahal: son of indycar legend bobby rahal. he’s very honest, straightforward, WILL tell you the truth even if it hurts and i respect him for that. has a bit of a temper but always races fair and expects the best out of everyone. he also does a lot of fundraising and charity work for veterans which is coolio (i jokingly refer to him as my brother because his dad and my dad look VERY similar, it’s uncanny)
9. felix rosenqvist: rookie fresh off the boat from formula E. also don’t know much about him but he’s been very exciting to watch so far this year and just got his first podium this weekend at mid-ohio which was very well deserved (he did once say the n-word on instagram, many years ago, and he’s swedish so i don’t expect him to know the history, but... it happened)
10. james hinchcliffe: literally everyone’s fave, not one single person hates him. he’s the beaming ray of sunshine on the grid and gets along with everyone, very similar to josef. if josef is a golden retriever, james is a cuddly little labrador (here is a video of them together from a LONG time ago but nothing has changed)
11. sebastien bourdais: another old boy but a true legend. he won 4 consecutive championships in champ car (indycar’s predecessor... kind of... it’s a long story) and continues kicking ass today. he was in a really scary crash during qualifying at the indy 500 a few years ago and made an impressive comeback.
12. spencer pigot: i honestly truly do not know anything about him, i didn’t even know he was a full time driver until right now, he just kinda fades into the background...
13. santino ferrucci: another confirmed trump supporter, was kicked out of formula 2 for deliberately making contact with his teammate, using his phone while driving his car, allegedly making racist remarks towards his teammate, etc. (you can read about it here). some people will say he’s had a really successful rookie season but honestly he just got lucky a few times and isn’t that good overall. he comes from money which explains a lot lmfao
14. colton herta: the BABY of the grid. he won his second ever indycar race at COTA this year, becoming the youngest race winner in indy history at 18 years old, one week before his 19th birthday. aside from his mega talent on track, he’s a respectable guy off track and is very mature for his age. if you watch F1 i’d compare him to a slightly more laid-back version of lando norris
15. marcus ericsson: if you’re coming from F1 then you already know him pretty well. he didn’t have much success in F1 but has found his niche in indycar, already scoring a podium in his rookie season. he’s chill and quiet but overall a nice young man
16. marco andretti: a third generation andretti, honestly has no real purpose on the grid aside from being the descendant of two racing icons (his grandfather is mario andretti, his dad is michael andretti), but uhhhh he’s been racing for about 15 years and only has two wins, so... take that as you will. you’ll almost always find him at the back of the grid these days
17. zach veach: by far the tiniest driver on the grid. i stood very close to him this weekend and he was shorter than me (i’m 5′1″) and i wouldn’t be surprised if he hasn’t broken 100 pounds. i don’t know much about him other than his very inspiring backstory (read here), and he has a strong religious background as well.
18. tony kanaan: a fucking FIXTURE on the indy grid. another old man but a legend. he has been racing in indycar for 17 years and did champ car for 5 years, so essentially he’s been at the top class of american single seaters for almost as long as i’ve been alive. he has one championship win (2004) and one indy 500 win (2013)
(skipped ed jones, not racing at pocono)
20. matheus leist: the first driver i ever met in person. he’s really nice and chill, but honestly not much to write home about on track. he’s solid and fairly consistent, but i wouldn’t bet money on him
(skipped jack harvey, max chilton, patricio o’ward: not racing at pocono)
24. ed carpenter: nicknamed “the oval master” because... he’s really good on oval circuits. he races the ovals for his own team. that’s all i know tbh
(skipped conor daly, sage karam, james davison, helio castroneves: not racing at pocono)
29. charlie kimball: don’t know much about him other than that he’s diabetic, and there was a pretty interesting article about how he manages his blood sugar during races (read here). he also has a bit of reputation for being rude/dismissive to fans but i can’t confirm that, i’ve never met him
so that’s it for your grid. you can take that information however you want, they’re just my opinions, someone else might have the complete opposite. also i should add, i really don’t wanna scare you if this is your first race, but pocono is one of two races on the indy calendar that makes me so viscerally nervous i almost can’t watch it (the other is texas motor speedway). again, i don’t want to freak you out, but just so you’re prepared, you will probably see quite a bit of crashing during the race. the AMR/holmatro safety team is one of, if not THE best in all of motorsports, here’s a little (slightly dated) video you can watch about how they do what they do in the event of crashes (warning tho: there is graphic crash footage in that video). despite what some people may say (i’m looking at you, felipe massa), indycar is the hallmark of motorsport safety and most other series have followed them in terms of safety technology innovations over the last 20 years (e.g., indycar has been using safety cars since the 70s, mandated a pit speed limit in 1991, CART mandated HANS for all tracks in 2001, indycar has used safer barrier since 2002, etc.) so if you do see crashing, take a deep breath and remind yourself that they have the world’s best crew taking care of them instantly. if you have any other questions don’t hesitate to ask, & i know you’ll have tons of fun at the race hehe :^)
