Sizzle and Serve: Exploring the Versatility of a Soapstone Griddle
Introduction:
In the world of culinary arts, versatility is key. Enter the soapstone griddle, a timeless kitchen tool revered for its ability to transform ordinary meals into extraordinary culinary experiences. From sizzling breakfast classics to mouthwatering dinner delights, the soapstone griddle offers a canvas for culinary creativity like no other.
Exploring the Benefits:
At its core, the soapstone griddle boasts a multitude of benefits that set it apart from traditional cookware. Crafted from natural soapstone, this versatile kitchen essential offers superior heat retention and distribution, ensuring that your dishes cook evenly to perfection. Whether you're searing steaks, flipping pancakes, or grilling vegetables, the soapstone griddle delivers consistent results every time.
Furthermore, the non-porous surface of soapstone prevents flavor transfer, allowing you to cook a variety of foods without worrying about unwanted tastes lingering from previous meals. This makes it an ideal choice for cooking delicate foods that require precise flavor profiles, such as seafood and pancakes.
Enhancing Flavors:
One of the standout features of cooking with a soapstone griddle is its ability to enhance the natural flavors of your ingredients. As the soapstone heats up, it releases subtle mineral nuances that infuse your food with a unique depth of flavor. Whether you're searing meats or grilling vegetables, the result is a dish that tantalizes the taste buds and leaves a lasting impression.
Versatility in the Kitchen:
From breakfast to dinner, the soapstone griddle shines as a versatile cooking tool that adapts to a wide range of culinary creations. In the morning, use it to whip up fluffy pancakes, crispy bacon, and golden French toast. Come lunchtime, grill up juicy burgers, savory sandwiches, and vibrant vegetable skewers. And as the sun sets, let the soapstone griddle take center stage for sizzling steaks, succulent seafood, and mouthwatering stir-fries.
Tips for Cooking Success:
To achieve optimal results when cooking with a soapstone griddle, it's essential to preheat the surface before adding your ingredients. This ensures even cooking and prevents sticking. Additionally, lightly oiling the griddle before cooking helps to create a non-stick surface and adds a touch of flavor to your dishes.
Maintenance and Care:
Proper maintenance is key to prolonging the life of your soapstone griddle. After each use, simply wipe the surface clean with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or metal utensils, as they can scratch the surface of the soapstone. With regular care, your soapstone griddle will continue to deliver exceptional culinary results for years to come.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, cooking with a soapstone griddle is a journey of culinary discovery and creativity. From its superior heat retention to its ability to enhance flavors, this versatile kitchen essential offers a myriad of benefits that elevate every meal. Whether you're a seasoned chef or an amateur enthusiast, the soapstone griddle invites you to unleash your culinary creativity and savor the joys of cooking.

Why is the smaller one more expensive
I get why they're a similar price (the electronics are all the same no matter the size) but spending more money to cook less rice is sending me

DP x DC: Of Cooking and Ghosts
Danny is a single father. Dani is now physically her actual age making Danny, at the tender age of 20 the father of a 4 year old(5 in a couple months)
Danny moved to Blood Haven. He's got a decent paying job, lives in a decent neighborhood, and his schedule allows him to take Dani to and from school. It had been a bit of an adjustment, but he and his daughter are doing alright. There's just one problem...
Danny can't cook
Danny never learned how to cook and frankly he can't just keep eating fast food and takeout. His parents weren't the best cooks but at least his dad could make flapjacks that didn't come alive and attack them. Hell, he missed going over to Tuckers and getting fed by Mrs. Foley, because that woman could really cook. Danny needed something homemade, surely cooking couldn't be THAT hard...
Dick was quite alarmed to find smoke coming out of his neighbor's door as he came back from walking Haley. His instincts kicked in, leading to one officer Grayson bursting in and putting out a small grease fire much to the chagrin of his neighbor, Danny. Dick invites Danny and his daughter Dani to his place down the hall while the smoke clears out. So Dick makes them the one food he knows how to make
Pancakes
Turns out neither of them are the most robust of chefs. Dick calls Alfred and gets some recipes to try and him and Danny make plans to go over to Dick's place and learn a couple. Dani likes to "help" aka play with Haley, and Danny and Dick bond over learning to cook and eating just a bit healthier
OR
I rewatched an episode of Sweetness and Lightning and am still on my Romcom bullshit. So Danny and Dick get a meet cute and then learn how to feed themselves. Frankly I'm not sure how or if secret identities and ghosts work into this, i just am feeling sappy and wanted something cute. Could be romantic, could just be friends, could be found family, idk

This post mentions the Le Creuset Doufeu casserole (Dutch oven) and several comments were "I want / must get".
@dduane and I don't need one, but from curiosity I went looking to see what they cost, and what I said in the original post still applies:
New Le Creusets like the one above are hideously expensive...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ouch!
Since buying by brand name Is A Thing, it seems to me that the words LE CREUSET on cast-iron cookware immediately jacks the price up by at least 100 £$€ currency units over similar items from other manufacturers; for curiosity I compared Le Creuset to Staub, which also aren't exactly cheap: 41cm oval Staub, €449; 40cm oval Le Creuset, €599.
OUCH!
*****
They can be found somewhat (and if lucky, much) cheaper on eBay and Etsy, or in yard sales, garage sales, car boot sales and thrift shops.
A bit of searching revealed that people have had some very good luck with vintage Le Creusets, quite possibly because the original owners didn't know what they'd got.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This has to be the best thrift shop bargain I've seen in a long time:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
*****
We've got these:
Tumblr media
Even though only the orange one is actually labelled as a Doufeu, the other two have recessed lids and also work that way, complete with condensation drip-points cast on the insides.
Tumblr media
This seems standard on recessed-lid casseroles, Staub have them too, and makes me think that casseroles with those lids are a better buy, since they can be used for regular OR doufeu cooking while those with flat or domed lids can't.
Also, remember where I said "original owners don't know what they've got"...? I found a hint of that in a sales listing which says:
It has a multi banded lid with a sunken knob, enabling the lid to be inverted, and used as a serving dish, with raised studs to help stop the food from moving around when being carved.
Tumblr media
I think what happened here was that whoever wrote the description didn't know what the studs were actually for, and defaulted to what they thought they were for.
They're not sharp enough to hold food in place, and while this style of lid can be balanced inverted, it's not so they become serving dishes, because they'll teeter off-balance again with the slightest sideways pressure, such as trying to carve meat. So, er, don't.
*****
The cream/brown Fontignac was bought new more than 30 years ago - I've mentioned the French Country Recipes (seriously yummy) cookbook that came with it a couple of times - and DD bought the orange Le Cousances Doufeu about 5 years ago on eBay.
The smaller black Tramontina (from Brazil) was bought new last year to find out if something at that price level was any good.
Tumblr media
So far... Yes, it is.
Staub own the Fontignac brand-name and Le Creuset own Le Cousances, so here's what to look for on the base of vintage originals.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There must be other bargains out there, maybe even as good as that thrift-store capture, so good hunting!

Warrior Bites: Clan Tools
Tumblr media
[Image ID: Reedwhisker, a black RiverClan warrior cat, sits behind two terracotta pots, some strips of willowbark, a traditional wooden pot called a firkin, and a rock. He has a stick in his mouth.]
Warriors of the Clans are shown in-canon to be able to weave, dig tunnels, decorate with shells, and do whatever it is that BloodClan’s got going on with those collars and manicures. Have you considered what other tools a semi-realistic warrior could handle?
A guide to the various tools and methods that the Clans can use to prepare complex dishes, including the equipment needed for smoking, baking, pickling, and so on. Part of the Warrior Bites series for Bonefall’s Clan Culture.
(The art in this guide was once again provided by my partner who hasn’t read a single page of warrior cats in their life but so help me god I’ll drag them down with me)
Tools + Equipment
Fire Starting
Containers: Twine + Baskets + Buckets
Cookware: Smokers, Ovens, “Grillstones“
1. Fire Starting
Flint can be used to start a fire, especially for Clans that lack lumber. Because flint is most easily found around the Mothermouth, it’s associated with StarClan’s glow and considered somewhat divine.
But for those situations without a flint starter, the Clans generally teach their apprentices the paw-drill method using a spindle. But these days, SkyClan uses stolen Glass to start fires quicker and easier than any other Clan…
Except on cloudy days, where some unfortunate apprentice still gets saddled with spindle duty.
Tumblr media
[Image ID: Reedclaw, a brown tabby Warrior Cat from SkyClan, sits on his haunches and spins a long stick called a ‘spindle’ with his front paws. Smoke is rising from the board the spindle is spinning against.]
2. Containers: Twine + Baskets + Buckets
RiverClan has the easiest access to twine; Willowbark can be peeled right off the tree and used without any processing for simple string to tie things with. WindClan uses woven grass as twine. ShadowClan, SkyClan, and ThunderClan are able to make cordage from Blackberry brambles.
Once the cat has twine, it can be woven into a simple basket to gather things, like berries, clams, or insects. In order to carry liquids, forested Clans can create firkins-- a small wooden bucket that requires some carpentry ability, namely creating wooden nails.
But these tremble before the value of pottery, which is needed to store liquids, ferment and pickle food, and create stew.
Pottery is made from clay, which has to be baked in order to go from wet mud to terracotta. RiverClan is responsible for making the majority of new pottery because of the river, and ShadowClan’s marsh gives them lots of access to low-quality clay.
WindClan was once unmatched in the quality of their pottery thanks to tunneling leading them to the finest clay deposits known to the Clans. Though SkyClan is now rivaling the finest ancient WindClan pottery, due to their willingness to steal buckets from twolegs.
(Leafstar says, “if you cant make a firkin, store-bought is fine”)
Tumblr media
[Image ID: Leafstar, the brown tabby-and-cream Warrior cat leader of SkyClan, sits behind a counter in front of an audience presenting a man-made firkin, parodying shopping channels. A speech bubble says, “Meow meow meow meow meow, storebought is meow.”]
3. Cookware: Smokers, Ovens, “Grillstones“
A smoker is very easy to construct, all that’s needed is some straight branches, twine, and fire.
First, a round pit is dug into the ground and filled with soaked woodchips. It is important they’re damp, because wet wood gives off more smoke than dry. Then, three beams are set and tied at the top, like a triangle. From there, a shelf is made inside of the beams. Multiple shelves can be made if a lot of food is being smoked at once.
ThunderClan wraps the smoker in a leather pelt, to keep the smoke in. Their prowess with smoking and seasoning a wide range of meats gives them the title of BBQ champions.
Tumblr media
[Image ID: A primitive smoker setup, made of three sticks leaned against each other in a triangular shape and tied at the top. Two shelves are tied into the structure, the top row with minnows and the bottom with hanging strips of meat.]
An oven is a large construction. Capable of cooking several meals at once, each clan would have just one to use communally. Because the communal oven is such a big project, each Clan would have one that looks unique to their environment.
ThunderClan’s, for example, is flat and made of stone, simple in design but very sturdy and capable of cooking a lot of meat at once.
Tumblr media
[Image ID: A stone oven made of flat, piled rocks. A fire is lit at the bottom and meat is browning on the top shelf. A stick leans against the side.]
For the quickest and easiest way to make a hot meal, meat is roasted on a spit or loose stick over an open fire. The best sear comes from a large, flat slab of rock propped up over a flame, known to the clans as a grillstone.
Tumblr media
[Image ID: Firestar, ginger tabby warrior cat leader of ThunderClan, watches bacon sizzle on a large, flat rock placed over a fire. His daughter, Squirrelkit, sits beside him. A thought bubble above her head contains a waffle, and a question mark.]
(Clan blood be damned that kittypet can work a grill)
