What Is Phishing and How Can You Protect Your Business From an Attack?
Last year in August, staff at MacEwan University, a school in Edmonton, Canada, received an email from a major vendor stating they had recently changed their electronic banking information and needed payments to be sent to a new account.
Assuming their trusted business partner was just going through some changes, the university complied and transferred three payments to the new bank account within a span of 10 days.
But two weeks later, MacEwan University received a phone call from this same vendor asking them why they hadn't paid their fees yet. Perplexed by the call, the university told them they had just transferred the payments to their new bank account.
The vendor had no idea what they were talking about. 
Unfortunately, this bank account didn’t actually belong to MacEwan’s vendor. It belonged to cyber criminals in Canada and Hong Kong. And MacEwan University just transferred them $11.8 million.
The initial email asking MacEwan University to transfer their payments to the new bank account looked exactly like their vendor's usual emails. But, ultimately, the message was fraudulent and a prevalent form of cyber attack that thousands of businesses fall victim to every year -- phishing.
What is phishing?
Phishing is the most common type of cyber attack. Criminals impersonate brands, banks, executives, and trusted business partners to manipulate people into downloading malware or ransomware, or visiting fake websites that trick them into handing over confidential credentials, like company passwords, credit card details, bank login information, and social security numbers.
Most cyber criminals deploy phishing attacks through email, like the picture below, but some have also started to exploit social media, messaging apps, and text message to steal people’s personal information.

With over 135 million phishing attacks attempted every single day and 97% of people not being able to identify a phishing email, this cybercrime could wreak havoc on your brand and bottom line.
Last year, the FBI proposed phishing attacks costs U.S. businesses $5 billion per year, and according to Deloitte, 33% of consumers would end their current relationship with businesses who fall victim to cybersecurity breaches, even if they don’t personally affect them.
So how do you defend your customers and employees from phishing without making them your brand’s first line of defense? Here are three shields you can leverage to protect your brand from these prevalent attacks.
How to Protect Your Business From Phishing Attacks
1. Build a DMARC record.
DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication Reporting and Conformance) is a cutting-edge email authentication protocol that leverages two other authentication protocols, SPF (Sender Policy Framework), and DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail) to verify legitimate messages sent from your domain and block fraudulent emails that appear to be sent from your domain.
These email authentication protocols are rather technical, so in a nutshell, SPF is a record of IP addresses that are authorized to send emails on your behalf that email service providers check against, and DKIM is a verification process that leverages cryptographic authentication.
DMARC is the only technology that can ensure your “header from” address (what your users usually look at first when they see your emails), is trustworthy. To do this, they’ll only authenticate email messages that pass SPF authentication and SPF alignment or DKIM authentication and alignment. If an email message fails SPF authentication or alignment and DKIM authentication or alignment, it’ll fail DMARC.

DMARC also allows you to tell email service providers what they should do with any fraudulent mail that appears to be sent from your domain. You can either monitor all of your emails, move unauthenticated messages to users’ spam folders, or decide not to deliver this type of mail at all to inboxes on your server.

2. Train customers and employees to spot an attack.
According to PhishMe, a phishing defense solution, companies who train employees to identify and report attempted phishing attacks only have a 5% susceptibility rate to phishing, even though phishing attempts grew 65% last year.
To help employees and customers spot one of these attacks and better defend your business, teach them these common phishing markers:
Poor Spelling, Grammar, or Writing
A lot of amateur cyber criminals don’t take the time to craft clear and convincing emails, which brands always seem to do, and foreign cyber criminals will usually rely on Google Translate to translate their messages. So if you receive a poorly written email from a seemingly legitimate sender, take caution.
Suspicious URLs
Most phishing emails lure people into clicking through to a malicious or fake website. To do this, cyber criminals will usually spoof the website’s URL by creating a lookalike one, or they’ll mask their dodgy URL by shortening it. Whenever you see a weird or shortened URL, make sure you hover your mouse over it to see if the landing page’s web address is different or fake.
Mismatched Sender Address
Even if a cyber criminal can perfectly imitate your brand’s voice, formatting, logo, address, and contact email address in their phishing email, there’s still a trait of yours they can’t copy -- your sender address.
Cyber criminals will usually create a lookalike sender address or just use a string of characters in hopes that you won’t check it. To verify a brand’s sender address, check out the sender’s domain in the email’s “from” header and see if it matches the brand’s domain.

3. Invest in email security software.
If your company has the funds, email security software like Proofpoint and Barracuda are the most reliable and effective lines of defense against phishing. Well-versed employees can still fall victim to cleverly-crafted phishing emails and cyber criminals constantly refine their malicious tactics, like sending phishing emails from the legitimate domains of compromised websites.
But since email security software can identify unusual traffic patterns and monitor fishy URLs, it can effectively detect, block, and respond to these sophisticated threats before they reach your customers and employees’ inbox.

Mineworx Technologies Ltd. (MWX:TSX.V; MWXRF:OTCQB), a provider of non-toxic precious metals extraction solutions to the E-Waste and mining industries, announced that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office recently issued a Notice of Allowance for the Mineworx patent application for “A Portable Mining Apparatus and Methods of Use.”
The technology for which the Notice of Allowance has been issued is the company’s HM X-tract mobile modular mining/extraction process.
Greg Pendura, CEO of Mineworx stated, “Our HM X-tract proprietary mining technology, combined with a unique operational system, results in an environmentally responsible, non-toxic process for precious metal reclamation which requires no tailings ponds and consumes 80% less water. The system is capable of high efficiency recoveries from both alluvial and crushed hard rock deposits as well as being able to process old tailings for remaining value. The new technology allows us to deploy rapidly, process efficiently and decommission quickly in an environmentally sound manner with little capital expenditure and significantly reduced permitting process.”
The company stated that the HM X-tract will target:
Deposits previously not minable due to environmental concerns.
Smaller deposits where large capital expenditures are not justified.
Deposits in areas where permitting and lack of water prohibit mining.
On site cleanup of contaminants and hazardous metals such as lead and depleted uranium on military sites and firing ranges.
Cleanup of any other metallic solids soil contamination.
Mineworx also announced that it will be applying to the TSX Venture Exchange for approval to extend the expiry date of 10,491,667 outstanding common share purchase warrants that were issued as part of a non-brokered private placement completed by the company in January 2014.
The warrants can be exercised for common shares of Mineworx at a price of 26 cents per share and were previously extended to the current expiry of November 7, 2018.
The company proposes to extend the expiry date of the warrants to 4:30 p.m., Edmonton, Alta., time on January 7, 2019.

Calgary Co-op relationship breakup causes unemployment and litigation
CALGARY — The emotions are likely to get damaged when a friendship breaks down despite more than 60 years of shared benefits.
The aftermath also involves the demolition of a large Calgary factory this month, hundreds of jobs and a complaint alleging millions of dollars in losses, in the continuing dust-up between grocery and fuel manufacturer Calgary Co-op and Saskatoon-based provider Federated Co-operatives.
Tom Webb, an adjunct professor at the Sobey School of Business at Saint Mary's University in Halifax who has taught and written about co-ops for decades, said the increasingly poisonous arrangement runs contrary to the core "co-operative" principle that has guided the creation of co-op organisations.
The breakup of the partnership erupted publicly last August when Calgary Co-op revealed that it had told FCL that, in the spring of 2020, it was transitioning to Vancouver-based Save-On Foods as a supermarket provider, pledging to "elevate" customer experience with more organic, healthy and convenient products and a new range of exclusive private labels.
It said FCL will proceed to purchase petrol. In November, Federated replied with an announcement that it would shutter the huge Calgary Food Distribution Center, cutting more than 200 local jobs.
Instead, the war extended into the courts. In February, Calgary Co-op filed a notice of claim against Federated concerning a proposed "Loyalty Plan" FCL which mandated participants to buy at least 90% of their goods for resale from Federated to earn "patronage" (essentially profit-sharing) payments.
Calgary Co-op — one of the highest of the 168 supermarket cooperative affiliates of FCL in Western Canada — earned $47.7 million in patronage payouts for the year ending Oct. 31, 2019, of which $38.6 million was linked to its dollars-per-liter gasoline sales.
The latest rewards programme was designed to "prejudicially strike" Calgary Co-op, it claims in its complaint, requesting the court to require Federated to coninue paying the patronage linked to petrol, along with undisclosed penalties.
In its defensive statement submitted March 23, Federated points out that given its scale, Calgary Co-op has the same privileges and responsibilities as any other participant — and notes that 163 out of 164 qualifying participants have already participated in the loyalty programme, with Calgary Co-op being the sole holdout.
Federated is seeking restitution from Calgary Co-op in its counterclaim, alleging it violated secrecy commitments when it signed a direct rival contract with the supermarket.
This claims that losing Calgary Co-op's grolcery business would result in a loss of more than $385 million from FCL's annual revenue and more than $20 million from net income, causing it to pay severance costs of $4 million for management and more than $2 million for unionised employees as it dismisses personnel, push a competing supermarket supplier to compete and decrease its productivity in service distribution.
Given the current burden on the supermarket supply chain as consumers stock up to cope with the COVID-19 pandemic, FCL spokesperson Cam Zimmer confirms the layoff notifications have been released and warehouse staff contracts are due to end as of April 13.
Meanwhile, Calgary Co-op spokeswoman Sage Pullen McIntosh says the move to swap mid-month grocery suppliers is continuing as planned, with retail products to be delivered through Save-On's Edmonton warehouse and delivery arm.
FCL posted revenue of $9.2 billion throughout fiscal 2019, net profit of $959 million and patronage distribution of $649 million.
Statistics Canada's new estimates indicate that in 2018 there were over 5,800 operating non-financial co-ops in the country raising $53 billion in income, but about two dozen of those employing more than 500. Fewer than 18 employees were working throughout the typical coop.
Approximately 44 per cent of Canada's co-ops are based in Quebec, where conventional worker cooperative help is higher than in most nations, Webb said.
CEO Scott Banda summed up his level of disappointment in his message in FCL's latest annual report when revisiting the highlights of the last fiscal year.

U.S. Patent Office Acts on Company's 'Portable Mining Appartus' Application

The technology for which the Notice of Allowance has been issued is the company's "HM X-tract mobile modular mining/extraction process."
Mineworx Technologies Ltd. (MWX:TSX.V; MWXRF:OTCQB), a provider of non-toxic precious metals extraction solutions to the E-Waste and mining industries, announced that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office recently issued a Notice of Allowance for the Mineworx patent application for "A Portable Mining Apparatus and Methods of Use."
The technology for which the Notice of Allowance has been issued is the company's HM X-tract mobile modular mining/extraction process.
Greg Pendura, CEO of Mineworx stated, "Our HM X-tract proprietary mining technology, combined with a unique operational system, results in an environmentally responsible, non-toxic process for precious metal reclamation which requires no tailings ponds and consumes 80% less water. The system is capable of high efficiency recoveries from both alluvial and crushed hard rock deposits as well as being able to process old tailings for remaining value. The new technology allows us to deploy rapidly, process efficiently and decommission quickly in an environmentally sound manner with little capital expenditure and significantly reduced permitting process."
The company stated that the HM X-tract will target:
Deposits previously not minable due to environmental concerns.
Smaller deposits where large capital expenditures are not justified.
Deposits in areas where permitting and lack of water prohibit mining.
On site cleanup of contaminants and hazardous metals such as lead and depleted uranium on military sites and firing ranges.
Cleanup of any other metallic solids soil contamination.
Mineworx also announced that it will be applying to the TSX Venture Exchange for approval to extend the expiry date of 10,491,667 outstanding common share purchase warrants that were issued as part of a non-brokered private placement completed by the company in January 2014.
The warrants can be exercised for common shares of Mineworx at a price of 26 cents per share and were previously extended to the current expiry of November 7, 2018.
The company proposes to extend the expiry date of the warrants to 4:30 p.m., Edmonton, Alta., time on January 7, 2019.

After 15 Years, Dream Mall Finally Becomes a Reality
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — It has taken 15 years, three owners, two names and hundreds of millions of dollars worth of taxpayer incentives, but a giant mall built on a former swamp in the Meadowlands — and less than 10 miles away from the shopping haven of Manhattan — is finally opening on Friday.
Sort of.
The $5 billion development, formerly known as Xanadu and now called American Dream, will eventually feature roughly 3 million square feet of stores, water slides, a caviar bar and an indoor ski slope that promises man-made snow even in the height of a New Jersey summer. It is an attempt to lure crowds to a spot not easily accessible by public transportation and which most people know primarily from visits for National Football League games or concerts at MetLife Stadium.
But when the complex opens on Friday, visitors will not find anyplace to shop or much to eat. The property’s owner, the Canadian real estate firm Triple Five Group, is introducing American Dream in “chapters.” The first consists of an ice-skating rink and a Nickelodeon amusement park that claims to have one of the world’s steepest roller coasters and will offer regular “slime” shows.
Triple Five plans to unveil a DreamWorks-themed water park and the ski slope by the end of this year, and said that more than 300 stores, the essential retail part of the development, are slated to open in March. During a tour last week, few signs hung above dark, partially constructed stores and dust and orange cones littered boards protecting tiled flooring.
Still, even a partial opening of the mall — publicists said they preferred the term “style and entertainment destination” — is a milestone. The project broke ground in 2004 but construction halted with the recession. In 2011, Triple Five, which also owns the Mall of America outside Minneapolis, took over with big plans to make American Dream a globally recognized megamall. At the time, a 2013 opening date was announced. That was subsequently pushed back at least four times.
In that time, the retail landscape has shifted rapidly and major mall developments have dropped off. Some originally announced tenants of American Dream, like Toys ‘R’ Us and Barneys, are now bankrupt.
“Maybe pre-recession, there were some massive mall developments, but this is extremely unique,” said Vince Tibone, a retail analyst at Green Street Advisors.
American Dream is a huge, some say unrealistic, bet that tens of thousands of people will visit the Meadowlands each day to play, as well as shop in stores like H&M and Hermès that are readily available in Manhattan. Triple Five has said that it anticipates 40 million visitors a year — on par with Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla. This despite the fact that Bergen County, the mall’s home, prohibits retail sales on Sundays.
Don Ghermezian, president of Triple Five and chief executive of American Dream, said that the development “absolutely” planned to compete with parks like Disney and would put northern New Jersey “on the map” as a global tourist destination.
“You don’t need to get in your plane to fly to Orlando anymore,” he said. “You can just come across the river.”
Mr. Ghermezian said he was confident that “the power of the center” would attract local and international visitors, pointing to his family’s success with the Mall of America and Canada’s West Edmonton Mall.
American Dream is planning to run a bus service that leaves Port Authority regularly and offer shuttles from a ferry. Triple Five has also purchased a helicopter company to bring visitors to three helipads on the property.
Skeptics, though, question whether East Rutherford can become a tourist mecca.
“Are tourists really going to say, ‘Let’s see a Yankee game and a Rockettes show and then take a bus from Port Authority to New Jersey to go to the mall?” said Jeff Tittel, director of the Sierra Club’s New Jersey chapter, who has been battling to prevent a development from opening on the site for all of his 22 years at the environmental group.
The financial risks to investors are significant. The development, which sits on state land, qualified for tax-free debt financing. But no local entities — not the state nor the borough of East Rutherford — arranged the financing. American Dream tapped a state agency in Wisconsin that was willing to borrow about $1.1 billion in bonds that allowed the complex to finally get built.
Some of the tax-exempt bonds are owned by funds managed by firms like Vanguard and Putnam, according to an analysis by Morningstar Direct. The bond documents include 30 pages of potential risks, including that attendance “may be depressed from desired levels” if tourists in New York are not willing to travel to the Meadowlands.
“I am skeptical,’’ said Lisa Washburn, chief credit officer for Municipal Market Analytics. “But there may be something about the combination of retail and entertainment at this level that will work.”
Mr. Ghermezian declined to discuss details around the financing.
New Jersey taxpayers have already sunk hundreds of millions of dollars on improving the roads leading to American Dream and have provided its owners with generous breaks like allowing sales tax revenue from the mall to be set aside to pay down debt.
Goldman Sachs is part of a group of lenders that have agreed to lend the project an additional $1.6 billion, but if American Dream defaults, the banks are entitled to an ownership stake in the Mall of America, which is Triple Five’s crown jewel.
Environmentalists have raised concerns about the emissions from the thousands of cars expected at the American Dream each day. Certain requirements were waived, Mr. Tittel said, that would have made the property energy efficient. The mall is expected to consume vast amounts of energy to support its entertainment attractions — including the cavernous ski hill facility that will be maintained at a temperature below freezing year round.
Flooding could be another problem. The Meadowlands, where wetlands have been filled in over the years to give rise to development, were battered with storm surge during Hurricane Sandy.
Discussions for a giant development on the site date to the mid 1990s. The proposal that finally got off the ground was a giant mall named Xanadu, an “idealized place of great magnificence and beauty,” and also the title of a 1980 film, a musical fantasy starring Olivia Newton-John.
The Mills Corporation, a real estate developer, started building the mall in 2004 and nearly completed it. There was even merchandise stocked in many of the stores, but the mall never opened because Mills ran into financial trouble. Xanadu then found a new backer, a joint venture that included a firm founded by Steve Mnuchin, now the treasury secretary, and another owned by Thomas J. Barrack Jr., a billionaire who planned President Trump’s inauguration.
The timing was less than ideal. The 2008 financial crisis hit, bank lending seized up and Xanadu was postponed. The huge structure, which former Governor Chris Christie once called the “ugliest” building in New Jersey, sat empty and visible to the hordes of New Jersey commuters who passed it every day.
Triple Five entered in 2011, promising a fresh start and a new design that would include more entertainment and more thrills.
Triple Five said that the complex would house the world’s biggest wave pool and its largest candy store. The New Jersey Hall of Fame, which honors native luminaries like Jon Bon Jovi, is also planning to lease space.
The constant delays are a sensitive issue. Caudalie, a skin-care company that signed a lease for a store at the American Dream in 2016, filed a lawsuit against the mall operator last year, saying that it was misled about the project’s opening date, its occupancy and funding.
The brand sought to end its lease citing breach of its terms and to retrieve its security deposit, which it said American Dream initially resisted. The case was settled shortly thereafter. A lawyer for Caudalie declined to comment.
Last week, workers were installing moss in an indoor garden at one end of the complex, while other contractors were bundled against blowing snow inside the ski hill.
Mr. Ghermezian said it would be a “great injustice” to the Nickelodeon park to open it as part of a broader unveil of American Dream. He dismissed questions about why the theme park was opening when its main concession stands were not yet ready.
“If you want to be a nit-picker, I can’t stop you from doing that,” he said.
Mr. Ghermezian said anyone who doubted the project’s viability should remember that his family used its other mall properties as collateral and invested “substantial amounts of our own personal money into this project.”
