What, in your opinion, is the strongest evidence that Mike realized his feelings for Will in season 2? (If you don’t mind reiterating this point, ik you’ve talked about this a bunch of times)

it’s the first time he ever separates will from everybody else in his life. people say he did that in 4x04, and he did, but it wasn’t the first time. when mike delivers his monologue, he looks at will and he says meeting him is the best thing he’s ever done. will is immediately separated from literally everything else in mike’s entire life, put into his own separate category, because he’s the best part of mike’s life.

in s1, mike made sure to tell dustin that he, lucas, and will were all his best friends. he’s now placing will away from them, because they aren’t the best part of mike’s life. will is, and will alone. he never even actually addresses will as just a friend in the monologue, only says that asking to be friends was the best thing he’s ever done, before completely separating will from every other friend he’s ever had INCLUDING el.

there’s a ton of reasons why the shed scene makes the most sense and this is barely anything, but it’s the strongest piece of evidence imo. if we’re taking the separation of will from everybody else as romantic, then we have to treat this scene with the same interpretation. mike has known will is different from everybody else for a long time now, and he realizes right around the time of the monologue (maybe a little before). it’s part of why, for the first time in the entire show, we see him push will away rather than pull him close at the snowball. mike was supposed to be with el, he couldn’t have those feelings for will, so he pushes him away. he does it and we see his dejection over it, but he did it anyway. mike was consciously trying to push will away as early as the snowball, and the only significant moment they had before that together was the shed scene. el came back literally right after, so he never had a chance at sorting that shit out before the expectancy to date el was present again.

V curious about babysitter Steve Adams & Steve Wayne!

Hello! I’ve brought those up here and here respectively, but I’d love to talk more about them!

For Babysitter Steve Addams, Steve has been surrounded by kids for A WHILE. This is post s4, and he’s hanging with all the kids (including Holly and some Wheeler cousins and school friends) and he’s just trying to get them all home safely. Except he may have accidentally shoved some kids in his car who weren’t part of the group. Enter: The Addams Family *snap snap*

The Addams in my story aren’t based on any particular version of them, of course, but kind of a mixture of the different adaptations to make them fit more with Stranger Things and my story lol.

Clearing his throat, Steve looked between the two of them before letting out a small groan. Just great. He sat back in his seat and gripped his steering wheel tightly. “Right. Okay, how about I just take you two back to your guardians, hm? And hopefully they don’t call the cops on me,” he added in a slight mutter. If he got arrested for kidnapping, the others would never let him live it down.

“Are you sure you don’t want to kidnap us?” the boy, Pugsley, apparently, asked with a small wheedle to his tone.

“I’m sure,” Steve dryly replied back. “Were your guardians at the festival with you? Should I take you back there?”

“No, we were alone,” the girl replied. “It’s much more dangerous that way.”

Steve, thinking about the fact that he had apparently kidnapped them, as well as the general craziness of the town, couldn’t help but agree. He let out a heavy sigh, barely resisting the urge to slam his head back into his steering wheel. How did this always happen to him?

“Right. Okay. So, how about I take you home then? Where do you live?”

Both kids have a forlorn sigh, as though being delivered safely home was the worst thing to happen, but after a stern look at them they relented and soon Steve was following their directions to an address just outside of town.

And then we have Steve Wayne, which is just a short little thing where Steve has been hanging around with Eddie and has developed a crush on him. Also post s4. Wayne, however, doesn’t realize that Steve is crushing on Eddie, thinks only Eddie is crushing on Steve. So when Wayne warns off Steve from hurting Eddie, Steve thinks Wayne knows about his crush on Eddie and disapproves.

Steve was really getting tired of having to prove that he wasn’t the same meathead jock he’d been in high school. He hadn’t even been one of the bullies! He’d just…been friends with them. And he _had_ made his apologies about not doing better at reining Tommy in and being too full of himself. Too inconsiderate of others.

All affected parties forgave him, and even Nancy and Jonathan had apologized as well for their past actions which hadn’t taken Steve’s feelings into account either. It takes three to tango, or whatever. They were all cool now.

And Eddie…

Christ, and Eddie.

Eddie had opened Steve’s eyes up in a way he had never imagined possible. He remembered driving to the Buckley house in the middle of the night and almost getting an instrument case in his face for his troubles when he knocked on Robin’s window and scared the crap out of her.

It was no bathroom confessional, but it would do.

He didn’t tell her what or rather who had made him have “The Awakening” as she called it, just that he came to the sudden realization that…he’s a little bit gay, it turns out.

Or bisexual, rather, but he hadn’t known that was something someone could do until Robin showed him some zines she’d picked up when the school band had made a trip into Indy a ways back. In any case, she had been a bit too distracted realizing her best friend and soulmate was also like her that she never brought up what had made him fully realize he was queer.

She would never let him live it down if she knew it was Eddie Munson that had turned his worldview on its axis. Nor was he ready for her revenge in badgering him to tell Eddie.

So, that's... Henry's sister. Who is supposed to be three years older than him. Interesting. The actor who plays Henry is 18, but she looks 12. And the flashback in S4 was already sus, lol. They say she was 15 and Henry was 12 when they "died", but they cast Livi Birch, who is younger than Raphael Luce (here)

I have so many thoughts about it. Maybe Henry is seeing the past here? Their first day in the new house... in 1957?

If we're dealing with different timelines, I'm really curious to see how they will handle it in a stage play (Also, Bob and his radio show!)

Brenner angry at Henry, but Henry doesn't look afraid, hmm. I can't wait to see these two interact.

Joyce and Lonnie on a date? I knew he liked her since they were young. But for some reason, he's not a main. I wonder why (no I don't, I have a very detailed theory about his role in the story lol)

Setup and Payoff

Dear Rookie writers: <clenches fist, looks out longingly onto a field of continuity> Look. I get it. You had to execute the ship. You were moved to an earlier time slot, so less risqué content. You tonally shifted to a comedy. Covid fucked your timeline, etc etc etc. FINE. I give you all of that.

But for the love of all that is good and holy can you PLEASE WRITE NORMAL FUCKING STORYLINES THAT MAKE SENSE.

Screenwriting is simple. Setup. Payoff. Like, for example:

— setup: show actively sets up friend ribbing friend about a coworker crush/romance. The PAYOFF would be said friend loses their shit when the coworkers actually get together (examples: Boyle in B99, Jacob in Abbott Elementary, Michael Scott in the Office, Schmidt for Nick and Jess in New Girl).

— setup: show actively sets up consequences to office / coworkers finding out about secret romance. PAYOFF: actual work consequences happen (ie, Ben and Lesley break up in parks and rec).

— setup: characters CONFESS THEIR FEELINGS to OTHER CHARACTERS in an ensemble cast so that the audience knows there are actual emotional stakes. PAYOFF: we get emotional insights and CLEAR emotional STAKES. (Ie, B99, Parks & Rec, New Girl, The Mindy Project).

— setup: you have two characters who want to be together but can’t due to [insert obstacles]. Unresolved tension continues to rise until characters can be together. (Ie, Castle, X Files, Alias, ER, Buffy, Once Upon a Time).

Every single move the Rookie has made this year has deflated each setup like a fucking pin in a balloon. — Lopez ribs Bradford about Lucy and in the end neither supposed bff brings up the romance again, save Lopez over some dumb radio message? (And we never get some confessional from Lucy to Nyla or anyone about how she pined for Tim in UC school, and all we get is some throwaway “*That* Bradford” one-liner?)

— Season One of Talia warning Lucy re: Nolan so they break up, to Seasons 2-4 of Lucy being a subordinate to Tim so nothing can happen, to Grey warning them about office romances, and in the end, we get ZERO reactions from any characters that they’re together and ZERO consequences to the relationship other than some mild Post-It wrangling?

— The unresolved tension that starts off with a bang in S1, ratchets up in S2 and complicates itself S3 and S4, never ACTUALLY gets addressed by Tim or Lucy confessing their actual feelings to each other? Just suddenly “if we do this” to “our kids will be xyz” in a few episodes?

I JUST DONT GET IT. I DONT UNDERSTAND setting up a storyline that could be SO FULL of juicy confessions, angst, longing, pining and just maybe ONE LITTLE SEXY SCENE FFS only to turn it into the MOST bland and milquetoast ship. I KNOW these characters can do hot and sassy and argumentative because we’ve seen it. They can definitely to angsty. But this whole we’re-going-to-dial -down-every-emotional-payoff-to-a-mild-5….like….to what end, writers? TO WHAT END?

do you know any blogs that are into platonic madwheeler? i just found a clip in s4 of them whispering together that i had never seen before and wondered if anyone had seen it or wanted to discuss! i think the reveal of mike's story in s5 might have some max involved somehow, perhaps a hospital visit or even his memories of their fraught relationship that develops into a mutual understanding because theyre both depressed at the start of s4.

I actually don't know any! I really like them as good friends, but I either see it mentioned as a romance angle or complaints about liking it since they don't interact much. Which I think is silly - clearly they are friends? I love how when you pull away the snark and sarcasm, Max just wanted to be friends with Mike. The scene with the skateboard in the gym in season 2 when Max is skating around and Mike starts genuinely smiling - that's one of my favorite parts of the entire series. It shows them both so perfectly!!

We don't have to see everything perfectly spelled out on screen. It's like jokes about how little we see Will and Dustin interact in the actual show. Sure, we want more of that and sure this much is true with minimal screen time together - but that doesn't mean in the "reality" of the show's internal world, that they don't interact. They're all friends and they'd all be together a lot, using the implications by means of imagination. So - Mike and Max. Great duo. Love them! Wish I knew of anyone you can vibe with, but that has never been a focal point I can recall well. I'm only following a really small number these days and do a lot of blog and tag jumping.

But ooooh I would love some nod in season 5. Mike talking to Max bedside while she's unconscious would be cool. Maybe guilt for being involved in bringing her into the danger of their lives. Maybe a confessional for some hard truths. He wants to tell a friend whatever it is he's been going through but he can't tell anyone else who could actively judge. Maybe him upping his loyal leader arc, bedside vowing they'll save her, even after all that time. There's a lot they can do. Will they? It would be nice, but part of me feels all the storyline with Max is going to be with others, but who knows!!

A little character study of Raven and Clarke, set somewhere in an alternate-S4-era (less Drama, more Community Building, etc. etc.).

This was written for the prompt "Blunt and its antonyms (sharp, polite, subtle, tactful)" for July Break Bingo 2023 (@julybreakbingo).

The Engineering department has no use for politeness or tact, and Raven, steeped in this culture since her training began, has now risen to the top of its hierarchy. She sees tasks that need to be done and she gets them done. She gives orders. She is blunt.

She's found this language suits her well. No time wasted in reading between the lines or trying to gauge hidden meaning tucked away within tone. No uncertainty. More important than the efficiency is the comfort in it, how it creates something steady she can walk upon without wavering.

Recently, then, she's realized that she loves Clarke best when she is blunt, too. Usually, she drops the pretense and the politics only when her nerves are frayed, when she's particularly scared or especially frustrated, or when all her other tactics have run out and all that's left is blunt force. They've fought in those moods before. But there's a thrill in it and a clarity to the air after the emotions burn out. There's a frank and open expression to Clarke's eyes that feels like honesty and trust.

Makes Raven think they're getting somewhere, anyway.

Clarke sits on the council now. She's reached the top of her area of expertise, as Raven has, because of a unique and random confluence of tragedy and chance. Too many of the real adults are gone now. And competence matters more than age on the ground. They carry an experience that none of their elders ever will: the raw, straggling, clawing desperation of survival without resources, in the shadow of uncertainty, fear, and war. Can't make up for that with Earth Skills classes or computer simulations or instructions memorized from books. And anyway, the kids aren’t so young anymore.

So all of them are treated in a certain sense like royalty, or at least like a group set apart. The hundred. The forward guard, the remainder. Bringing on the changing of the generations a little early, heading sub-departments, departments, barking out instructions, standing in authority. She feels uncertain in the role sometimes herself, but at least when she's settled on a project, she knows her worth. From there it's not so hard to boss others around. Odder still is to see her friends, people she still thinks of as the underdogs, leading scouting teams or organizing farming projects or drawing up plans for new buildings. Making Arkadia over in their image.

When she catches sight of Clarke leaving council meetings, the oddest part is that the others are people Raven hardly knows. Yes, Clarke should be in charge. And only Clarke, and the people she trusts. She tramps down the hall with such confidence, her chin up, her expression unreadable.

In council meetings, she speaks with precision, mixed in with authority: assured but polite. Tactful, always. There's just a certain way, she's explained, that things get done, and it has to do with not making enemies. Really it has to do, Raven thinks, with playing people like fiddles. Reading their weaknesses, exploiting them. That's what Clarke's an expert in, more than anything else; Raven's seen it in her in their quietest moments, the way Clarke's eyes search hers, the long silences gathering up in the dusk, the careful way she picks out all her words. Her voice grows quiet, confessional, and soft. Time moves slow. Her hands squeeze Raven's so tightly, she's sure all the meaning in the world fits there in the press of skin against skin. Some illegible meaning in a language no one's ever taught her, because damn, it was never this complicated with Finn.

A solid week of unclouded skies and strong sun has baked the muddy paths of the settlement into cracked, hard dirt, when the latest trading mission sets out from Arkadia. Raven approaches the Rover just as Clarke is packing the last of the bags in the back. Clarke smiles when she catches sight of her, a genuine, bright smile that erases the tight furrows previously etched across her brow.

"Are you coming?" she asks.

"To talk diplomacy with a bunch of Grounders?" Raven rolls her eyes. She stops up short just next to the Rover, leans all her weight on her stronger leg, her hand against the dusty, hot metal of the back door. For a moment, she takes Clarke in as if she were trying to memorize her. "Not really my thing."

"Just wanted to see us off?"

See you off, Raven thinks. One of them should say it, but she shrugs. "I know you're not leaving yet, but I didn't want to miss you."

"We might get an early start."

Clarke's good with the Grounders, most of the time—not good like Octavia is, inserting herself, mutating herself, becoming one of them—she's not adept at their culture and she never cedes ground. But she's good at finding what the other side wants and then granting it for a price: the definition of negotiation and bargaining. If Raven could be bought, now, what would be the cost? She rolls the question around in her mind, wondering all at once if it's ever crossed Clarke's.

She reaches out her hand and slides her palm against Clarke's, and Clarke links their fingers with a tight, protective hold. Just say it. Just say it. I'll miss you; I want you. You should come, so that you can be with me.

Clarke's smile has softened, faded, the expression around her eyes now wistful and sad. Then she squeezes Raven's hand extra tight, and leans in, and kisses her once, not quite on the lips. "I'll see you," she promises, "when I get back," and the words could mean anything at all.

i will NOT know peace until st replicates the absolute RUSH of adrenaline everyone felt during the van-flip scene in s1. the sheer excitement and vindication i felt in that scene is something i feel the show has never been able to produce again and i want them to return to that minimal style of depicting el’s (and will’s fingers crossed) powers in s5 because it feels so much more REAL

okay i never check the tag or confessionals so im only experiencing via mutual posting but i cannot believe there are people who don’t think mike is a dynamic and complex character. MIKE WHEELER.

i’d say he’s literally the most complex character in the show. i know i say this all the time but mike isn’t the embodiment of any singular experience because he’s written so human. he’s got a strong will and he’s hard pressed to give up hope. he’s bad at talking to other people and expressing himself and people will follow him anyway because they see his determination and love and it inspires them too. like that’s LITERALLY what happened in season 1. mike’s moral compass leads him to think violence is wrong unless it’s in self defense against violence which is why he reacted so harshly at rink-o-mania. mike admires when violence is used to protect but he’s afraid when violence is used to harm first and that’s absolutely a result of troy and probably lonnie.

mike has an incredibly complicated relationship with el that cannot be divided into whether or not he loves her. he cares about her so deeply that it’s practically love but it isn’t familial or platonic or romantic but something else that came as a result of the things they went through together, good and bad. he wants to be her friend because he isn’t. he doesn’t have a relationship with her but he knows that at her core she’s very similar to him; protective and loving and strong willed. he admires her! but they don’t have a relationship. he wants a friendship, but he has to unpack a lot of his current perception about el and detach himself from her.

mike’s relationship with lucas and will and eddie and dustin and max are all like this too. he has complicated and different relationships with everybody. he’s angry with lucas for joining the basketball team, part of him understands why and part of him wants to be like lucas too. he’s angry with himself about it. he’s constantly being pulled apart in his relationship with will, having built a completely different perception of what he thinks will is saying versus what will thinks he’s saying and it’s caused massive communication issues and neither mike nor will are at fault for it. mike absolutely had a crush on eddie and wanted to accept himself the way eddie did, and i’d say a lot of his admiration had to do with the way eddie pulled him out of his isolation problem after the byers moved. eddie’s death is gonna crush him. mike and dustin haven’t gotten much time together over the course of most of the show but right now dustin is probably the only person who has any idea what’s actually going on in mike’s head because dustin has become a safe place. dustin still wants to play dnd, so mike has someone to lean on without being terrified of exposing himself while he regains confidence in his freak status. dustin and him don’t have deep, hard conversations but mike does tell things to dustin and wants him to do the same. mike’s relationship with max in s2 and s3 literally deserve their own post. like that dynamic is deeply rooted in mike’s insecurities and grief

mike himself has intense struggles with his mental health because of how aware he is. he understands his own feelings and what they mean, he has known he’s had feelings for will for a long time and has struggled with it constantly. he’s struggled with his sexuality because he’s aware he’s gay and can’t love el the way he’s supposed to no matter how hard he tries. he’s aware that he can’t stop loving will no matter how hard he tries. he’s aware of the fact that he looks at boys and never looks at girls because he’s been aware of who he is since at least post s2 and he’s tried to fix it and can’t. he started accepting himself and then the entire thing with s4 was him thinking will was returning his feelings and he was ready to break up with el at sbp and pursue that friendship but then he felt like he had to give el what ‘she’ needed and erased so much of that progress

mike was way too willing to walk off a cliff for dustin. you’re gonna look me in the eye and tell me the boy who set up that sauna plan in under five minutes, who managed to understand a hivemind he’s never directly interacted with, who managed to discover an alternate dimension just to save the people he loves couldn’t find a better way to diffuse that situation??? that he couldn’t even try? the mike we know would never have given into something like that so easily if he didn’t want to. part of him was doing it to save dustin, but he could’ve saved dustin another way. mike had just lost will, el, and lucas. he puts pressure on himself to save everybody and he ended up losing everyone and now dustin is in danger too. he needs to save dustin or else he’ll feel like a complete failure of a person. it’s about saving dustin, but it’s also about the fact that he doesn’t see value in himself outside of other people

i can’t even list everything here but mike is SO complicated. he’s hope and he’s tragic and he’s human. people just don’t want to admit that they refuse to try and understand difficult storylines and make you look outside of the norm you’re forced to look through. it’s about defying norms until you have to defy your own norms.

Ben/Hurley

EYES OPENED. Ben/Hurley s4 and in s5 they're like Sawyer/Juliet...... JVSBIBIABIA

Okay but i imagine them as slowwwwww burn, after years on the island Ben develops a crush on Hurley. Hurley doesn't see it at all. Maybe a few years later Hurley is like oh Ben is kind of.....and then they're both unknowingly pining. Hurley is oblivious to Ben's crush and Ben doesn't know why Hurley gets extra sweaty around him. I don't know what would get them together because I don't think they'd have a big confessional scene...unless one of them almost died. Maybe Hurley's taking a nap and Ben thinks he's dead and starts in on a Pride and Prejudice level monologue. Maybe Michael is sick of the past 5 years of pining and tells Hurley to do something about it. Maybe Michael and Walt plot to trick them into a romantic date. I just know it happens eventually. Hell, maybe after they both die. When Ben finally comes into the church, watching Alex grow up for the five hundredth time. Hurley's just glad to see him, and the I Love You So Much stumbles out. And it's a ridiculously long wait, but it's finally happened.
