OMG I honestly share very similar responses which is so funny considering that I watched only recently as full grown adult with no context for the show 😅
Totally vibe with your takes on Willow and Xander. I think her arc was really strange and never really fully came together as relatable or digestible. And yeah, Xander never becomes an interesting character. I can usually deal with unlikable or dark, as long as it turns into an interesting storyline.... He never delivers on that 😅
The only difference really was my initial reaction, probably because I wasn't watching live and binging eps, was that I actually really liked how normal and immature Dawn was. I think she grounded Buffy into a real family, especially with how annoying having (and worrying about) a younger sister mystical origins aside lol.
I have your ask too in my inbox and I'll get to it after work today 💕💕 thank you for answering my ask I love chatting about character analysis and interactions in Buffy, even though I'm so many decades late haha
Did you have a favorite Buffy character or ship?? ✨
Thanks for asking! I freakin' love Buffy and talking about it. I first watched it when I was in high school and my mum bought me the dvd boxsets (yeah I'm old).
My fifteen year old self loved Buffy x Spike. Characters I remember liking were Spike, Drusilla, and Faith. I really liked the vamp (wink) vibes.
Now? I ADORE Cordelia, Buffy, Anya, Faith, Tara, Oz, GILES ❤️. As for relationships I like both Buffy x Spike and Buffy x Angel. I think both were absolutely vital for her character growth whereas I used to find Angel a wet lettuce (the Angel series helped with that though).
What's great is how much I love the character of Buffy now as an adult. She's the perfect complex hero with an excellent arc. She's different by the end series but you completely get why.
As for Dawn? I couldn't stand her at first. I think that's down to the writers though (just throwing her into the mix was jarring and casting an actress who was too old/pretty to match the dialogue which suits a 10 year old kid). I don't mind her now but she doesn't compel me like the others.
Possibly controversial but I didn't like Willow's arc. I preferred her as a dorky techno-pagan than full on witch but I get witchy was the vibe of the time period (and she/Tara absolutely were trailblazers). I also think Joss Whedon favoured the actress (definitely over SMG) which soured things for me.
NEVER XANDER. Not then, not now. I know he's the Whedon self-insert which is why he gets these wonderful women throwing themselves at him, but come on...HE GIVES NOTHING.
(sorry for the huge response but damn it I love the series and I only know maybe three people who have watched it irl?)

a little fic from someone who still hasn't finished all of buffy teehee

platonic dawn & spike || between S5-S6 || angst, hurt/comfort, typical banter || 5k wc
summary: It's the summer after Buffy's death, and Spike's on Dawn duty again while the Scoobies are out and about. She picks the movie and prods him about his feelings, knowing exactly what buttons to push.
on AO3
preview:
Little bit picked the film, like she did every night he was elected for babysitting duty.
Not that he minded bein’ with her, it was better him than that useless Xander boy who could barely save his own neck, let alone keep hers safe. Though, Spike knew by now to keep those comments to himself. Mostly.
He’d been rather quiet compared to his previous loquacious attitude ever since… Well, ever since he unofficially joined sides with the merry gang of demon nabbers and stabbers. Became one of the team, he did. Not by formal invitation and definitely not on their terms, but still Spike patrolled the Hellmouth with Xander, Willow, Giles, and that bloody bot most nights. Playing well with others hadn’t ever been his bag, but he tried to make it work best he could. Now that they were on their own, they never turned away his offer to tag along.
It meant the streets were safer for her after all.
Dawn tucked her hair to one side, hovering a moment to make sure it was all working, and straightened up from her low crouch. The whine of the VHS player screeched loudly as it sucked up the tape and started their movie night-in. Nibblet, looking pleased as punch with herself, glanced back at him offering a nod of support. With limbs stretched out over the sunken sofa, he tried to relax. The room was a bit drafty from all the smashed window repairs, and their couch smelled of rainy mildew, forgotten dust, and if he really inhaled, there was a faint scent-memory of …
“Which film is it this time, bit?”
“I think you’ll like this one.”
He raised a brow with wary suspicion. Teenage girls had the potential to be more savage than some hellspawn he’d met in passing. Of all human teen girls, Dawn had the sharpest bite. Her non-answer was likely the predecessor to wanton insult and twisted humor.
The corner of his mouth twitched upward. That's what made her his favorite; she was the most tolerable with her clever, gutsy jabs, like her late mother, compared to the rest of the so-called Scoobies.
The opening trailer spun onto the screen, dark and creeping with a cheeky narrator announcing the film is one of Hammer’s productions. Cheap-looking bats floated across the screen with young girls’ screams as the orchestral climax music. So, she had picked a proper thriller for them then.
“Horror?”
Dawn hummed in thought, standing off to the side, still mesmerized by the screen.“Sort-of.”
The rest you can read here :)

As you're about to find out, poor Tumblr, I have been on a huge Buffy kick the last 6 or so months. I've got to have an MRI for unrelated reasons, but I'm worried that all they'll see when they look at my dumb brain is just dumb Spike and his dumb Spike face. Join me on Patreon and BSKY coz that's my crypt.

What were your thoughts on Riley?
Complicated!
With his introduction, I thought he was crushing on Willow 😅so when he turned out to be interested in Buffy after much convincing from his friends (that later HATE her) I was a bit shocked!
Early Riley is fine—very kind and does appreciate Buffy's intelligence and ability especially when he realizes she's the slayer. He's nice to Dawn too for the most part.
Then, he quickly turned to the most bland cast aside side character when things got chaotic at the end of s4 and into s5. I think the writers had NO idea what to do with a normie dating Buffy and panicked.
It was a rough spot to be in for him post-military op, being on the run and ill. But there was just a lack of genuine chemistry between them and a strained connection during the time that Joyce was sick.
His weird jealousy/insecurity/suck job addiction really sealed the deal for me to say good riddance. And I was aggravated that Xander tried to guilt Buffy into chasing after him when she was the one who was wronged! And clearly the feelings weren't right. An ultimatum after she found you in a junkie house hardly felt fair to force her to "be vulnerable" with you.
Ah! It was frustrating all around 😂😂
(it doesn't help that spike has so much more charisma throughout.... And that Riley had no idea Faith was in Buffy's body during the swap 😬)
