Love (cannot emphasis how much sarcasm there is in that word) that an official Canadian government response to high cellphone rates is to switch carriers.
Switch it to what? We basically have three companies since one was allowed to eat the forth (with the government saying it wasn't anti-competition and the company eating the other pinky promising they wouldn't jack rates up). Even the smaller companies have to rent infrastructure from the Big Three so there's only so much they can do if that rent costs an arm and a leg.
And that's not touching on how many "small companies" are actually just subsidiaries of the Big Three. You may save $5 but you're still with Telus/Rogers/Bell.
Or that the actual small companies tend to have shit coverage because they don't have the infrastructure available to them and are prevented from getting it. Or their traffic is throttled in favour of the Big Three's customers. Or both.
Or that they're extremely regional thus aren't an option for a huge chunk of Canada's population.
We have no true options and the government has shown time and again that they're fine with monopolies, in multiple industries, and don't care when said monopolies jack up prices to make shareholders and the c-suite more money at the expense of everyone else. At most there will be a verbal slap on the wrist and a giftcard for $25 that people have to register for, for a decade and a half of price gouging.
It's not talked a whole lot about outside the country from what I've seen and heard but Canada is a country of monopolies. A handful of companies own nearly everything, every province has a family or two that owns a hell of a lot (Nova Scotia is basically owned by one family at this point), and our government ignores it. Even the branch that is supposed to be against monopolies is fine with mergers and takeovers in most cases.
Because, you know, the company said it totally wouldn't use consumers' lack of options to increase prices.
#canada#so much of our infrastructure and critical construction such as housing#has been pawned off for decades to private companies#and i forgot to mention one (1) family owns the bridge that is a major international corridor between canada and the us#which is apparently fine even though they fought tooth and nail to stop a bridge they don't own from being built#like our housing crisis can be traced back to the government deciding to stop building public housing in the 90s#because they figured private developers would pick up the slack#affordable apartments don't bring in much money so we got decades of cheap-ass 'luxury condos' instead#and once airbnb became a thing we got entire buildings with units <300sqft#and of course when the party in charge rotates between conservatives and neolibs nothing changes and that can gets kicked down the road#and keeps getting kicked until something collapses and they see the chance to fully privatize an industry#something similar is happening to our healthcare system too#it has been left to languish for years/decades with funding freezes and cuts#and private companies are quick to jump in and get the government stamp of approval to do [thing] that the public system clearly can't do#when [thing] would absolutely be possible if it was actually funded and/or staffed#so many communities were cut off when greyhound closed up shop because there's no government inter-city transportation#we lost internet/banking/cell service/etc nation-wide because one of the big three decided to push an update to live without redundancies#and it bugged and took the entire company's network down#even the government agency that demands major companies have a backup on a different network was taken down because they ignored that#and they got a deal if they kept their backup with rogers while their main network was also rogers#so they couldn't even make an emergency statement or anything about it#half my province also lost all digital infrastructure because it's a private company and making a redundancy line would mean smaller bonuse#it's just so bad#joke all you want about how canada is nice and friendly#but you are wrong and it's hell if you actually live here#the only reason canada is seen as nice is because it's hard to not seem like the better option when the us is your neighbour#and because of decades of pr work to make canada seem friendly and nice and not at all problematic#in some countries you actually have to try to hide you're canadian because of how much we colonize and the damage we do to other countries#yes these tags have derailed from the post but ugh#i take major issue with people who insist canada is nice and has never done anything wrong

my dad is considering paying his beloved 25 year old employee/emotional affair partner’s income taxes to make a problem go away. this is obviously not going over well with my mother. in fact it may get us the rest of the way to her leaving! so that’s a father’s day for the books

heard someone say (irl) a while ago that a partial solution to the housing crises/young people generally being priced out of owning was to build more condos.
except here's the thing. i'm financially better off than most of the people in that group. im privileged enough to have savings. i could not afford even a 10% down payment for anything other than a shoebox, and once i moved in, i'd be hit hard by monthly hoa fees, because yes, most condos in the area are in hoa areas. i'd be lucky to get 1k sqft condo for the equivalent of what my dad bought his 2k/7k house for at the turn of the century.
here's the other thing. landlords love to buy up condos and rent them out because in most places in california, condos aren't subject to rent control. i know this because i rent a condo. also? owners also don't have to even worry about common area management because they put their property into the hands of a property management company who just pays the previously mentioned hoa fees.
so. idk i guess it could be temporarily good for temporary slapdash construction jobs but it just feels like an incredibly ineffective solution when, simultaneously, there are literally a large number of massive mansions sitting empty 10-11 months of the year because they're someone's summer home.

welp, i took a walk by the Proposed Land Use Change sign on the empty lot this morning and it looks like they not only want to build a tower on the vacant lot, but they also want to take out the giant public parking lot I park in (along with hundreds of other people, that lot is almost always full), which is going to make work so immeasurably worse because not only me but HUNDREDS OF OTHER PEOPLE will be searching for parking every morning. I already leave an hour before work to try and find a spot and now even that won't be enough.

#we're supposed to do a final push move tomorrow#i have already felt for awhile that my partner's parents are quite annoying#which is way too easy to feel guilty about because they do a lot for us and seem like good people for the most part#but like. they have made moving very frustrating and have been weirdly controlling about it#and just. like nonsensical to the point of it feeling like aggression#i lost track of how many fucking times we had the interaction 'where do you want this?' 'over there so it's not in the way'#'imma set it here' specifically where it will be in the way? fucking why? and my back is fucked up rn WHICH THEY KNOW so#moving it out of the way myself is frequently not an option#they left literally every single box directly in a fucking tight area that seperates our entry from our bedrooms#they stacked them higher than i can handle safely even when my back *doesn't* hurt#i moved things further into the house and out of the way and informed them i had done so and why#they continued fucking putting shit in the exact same spot anyway#there's literally a mattress a boxspring seven boxes a three tier organizer and a clear tote in this fucking spot#i'm not fucking moving it and they can deal with it when they come in tomorrow#i came over here to get some clothes for my partner so they can br girlmode for a haircut tomorrow#and we were essentially harassed into packing everything except a few days of clothes already despite it having been A MONTH since we#started paying rent and we aren't fucking sleeping here yet#and like. it's so quiet. and it's a reasonable temperature in here. they come home from their other house and turn the AC down so low#that i can't comfortably sit in the house without thick pajamas a jacket a blanket and sometimes a heating pad too!!#i don't even want to go back to go bed over there but i have to bring the fucking clothes back#his dad is such a controlling dickwad and is so fucking contrarian about everything even when it's not his thing#and literally they'll offer aid just so they can control what we do i swear!!!!#like 'we'll pay for X portion but if we do you must choose thing with Y parameters'#'we'll pay for 50% of your washer and dryer but they have to be front loaders'#they tried to pressure us into accepting a condo that they would buy (we would pay monthly building fees) and sell if/when we left#they didn't say 'let's look at some condos together' they said 'here we'll buy this specific one do you like it?' and KEPT ASKING ABOUT IT#AFTER WE SAID NO MULTIPLE TIMES#i put my foot down on that offer so fucking hard because i knew there were gonna be shit ass rules because it would be their property still#like no i will not be putting cameras in my home and i will be burning candles thank you and i'm going to have a christmas tree and#on and on and on

A Memorable Journey to Bohol: Exploring Nature's Wonders and Cherishing Family Bonds (Blog)
I recently had the pleasure of embarking on a delightful 3-day vacation to the beautiful island of Bohol with my family and relatives. It was an unforgettable experience filled with adventure, breathtaking sights, and quality time spent with loved ones.
On our second day, we embarked on a fascinating afternoon tour, starting with a visit to the oldest coral stone church. The rich history and serene atmosphere left a lasting impression on us. Next, we explored the enchanting butterfly farm, which not only showcased beautiful butterflies but also housed exotic birds🐦, crocodiles🐊, and even turkeys 🦃– a mix of unexpected yet delightful animal encounters. I had the chance to hold a snake 🐍, an experience I won't soon forget, and had my picture taken with it.

Me, holding a Danger Noodle 🐍
Our appetites were satisfied at the floating restaurant, where we relished delicious food while being serenaded by an incredibly talented singer. Her impeccable intonation and pronunciation added to the magical ambiance of the place.
Tumblr media
One of the highlights of our tour was the Tarsier park, where we were mesmerized by the adorable and unique Tarsiers. Observing these tiny creatures up close was a real treat.
Tumblr media
Look at those big beguiling eye 👀✨
Saving the best for last, we journeyed to the famous Chocolate Hills, passing through the majestic man-made forest on the way. The scenic view was a feast for the eyes and made the climb up the stairs well worth it. Although my mom and sister opted to wait for the family at the bottom, I couldn't resist the allure of the breathtaking landscape.
Tumblr media
Me again 😎
Despite the minor setback with our condominium issue that evening, I chose to focus on the positive memories of the trip and not let it dampen the joy I experienced exploring Bohol's wonders.✨
Our last day had a slight hiccup with a flight delay, but it granted us the chance to discover a nearby resort with a wider beach and palm trees. The beauty of the place left us in awe once more.
Tumblr media
I’m going back to this place again. ✨💕
However, not everything went as planned at the airport. I had to part with my laptop's extension cord, but the memories and experiences from the trip overshadowed this small inconvenience.
Overall, my journey to Bohol was nothing short of amazing. I felt invigorated and grateful for the chance to immerse myself in the island's natural beauty and enjoy precious moments with my family and relatives. Bohol has won a special place in my heart, and I can't wait to return and create more cherished memories in the future.
Until next time,
Themis ⚖️
