quick (and probably dumb) question- aside from his biological dad, what roles did Conchbar's other father figures play in his life?

Conchobar lived all of his life knowing Fachtna Fathach, the King of Ulster, was his father. Fachtna didn’t affect him all that much. He did not influence Conchobar as much as one might expect. Conchobar simply grew up being proud that he was a son of a powerful King, therefore he had a privilege and a name in the world. He had been around Conchobar till he was seven years old, then he passed away. Conchobar had a vague idea of death back then, so he assumed his father’s passing had been Fachtna being put in an eternal sleep.

So Facthna’s passing meant that his brother Fergus mac Roich was next in line. When Facthna died, he fell in love with his brother’s wife Nessa and hoped to make her his Queen through marriage. However, Nessa made it a condition that Fergus would make Conchobar King for a year. Fergus agreed because he knew the boy will only be King in name, but the loyalty and servitude of the Ulaid was still his.

Nessa and Fergus married, in turn making Conchobar’s own uncle his step-father. Fergus acknowledged him as his own, and taught him the way of kingship even in the age of seven. While Fergus acted as his combat tutor, Nessa taught Conchobar about politics. After a year, Conchobar turned eight years old. At this point, his being King should’ve already ceased. However, since Nessa gave the kingdom council and druids gift so often and because Conchobar was too wise for his years, they didn’t want him to stop being the King.

While this infuriated Fergus, his love for both his wife Nessa and his foster son Conchobar made him accept the circumstances. In a way, Fergus is the reason why Conchobar is a fearsome warrior. Whereas Nessa is the reason for his knowledgeable mind. 

Conchobar died not ever learning that Cathbad was his biological father.
