For 1D fans like me, yesterday was tough. Anyone who says, “Come on, it’s just some boy band!” doesn’t understand that these five boys were part of our lives for years. We’d wake up to their shenanigans and fall asleep after checking on them just one more time. 

We’d laugh at Harry getting pantsed on stage, at Louis and Liam playing football indoors, at Niall being the only one without tattoos, at Zayn explaining “you drink it, you drink it, you drink it” when there was general band confusion about miso soup. 

They were our boys. 

So watching them unite a final time to lay one of them to rest? It was devastating. It erased any hope we may have had for a reunion on their own terms, maybe in five years or a decade, and we’d be right there with them, older but not necessarily wiser, laughing and cheering and alive. Because that’s how they made us feel. 

No, we didn’t lose a father, a son, a brother—my heart breaks for those who did. But we lost someone who was part of our lives for years, who made us smile and sing and dance. 

So when someone tells you, “Yeah, I’m a 1D fan and this is tough right now”? Be kind. 

Actually, just be kind in general. You never know what people are going through.

liam's family made an agreement with the press for them to be there, that's why there are so many high quality pics an so much press.

i have been avoiding any press about this so i have no idea the source/context/conditions of this deal/etc for reference, but i think whether there was a deal or not, the general point and the anger towards the media still stands because i highly doubt the family truly wanted the press there and if they had the option for them to not be there at all, i imagine that would be what they ACTUALLY wanted. but, considering the world we live in where the media were going to be find a way to be there no matter what due to our fucked up celebrity culture, i can imagine the deal was more about having the press there in a more controlled way with conditions in order to avoid an out of control press situation considering a reality where it would be nearly impossible to avoid having them there at all.

i think the main point of my post at least was that it is fucked up that we've gotten to the point where people feel entitled to see these kinds of moments that should be private, and in an ideal world there would be no public demand for pap pictures of celebrity funerals and therefore no need to even have to make a deal with the press in the first place since it would be understood that it's not appropriate to be photographing other people's grief for public consumption. it's really sad they had to make a deal to avoid them being even more exploitative than they already are being about a horribly tragic death.

An IRL just told me not to talk about liam with others bc "no one cares" sorry you don't care but just bc you don't care what's happened doesn't mean I don't and doesn't mean I won't have a reaction to this situation as a long time 1D fan. People who aren't involved in fandoms like 1D will never understand why we care about these things. Also, we aren't asking you to care the same way we do, but at least be respectful about how we feel!

child stars dying young directly or indirectly as a result of fame-related trauma is just so especially sad. for me it’s the tragedy of how kids don’t really know what they’re signing up for when they ask to be famous, especially back in 2008. liam’s mistakes, addiction, and bad decisions, are all so inarguably tied into his career and the carelessness of the entertainment industry. the 31 year old man that just died is the same 16yo boy that was given drugs and alcohol to keep him quiet while he was being overworked and exploited. corey haim, river phoenix, judy garland, and so many more. you can think what you want about liam and have your own opinions, but don’t lose sight of the larger picture that he was a victim of.
