Entrepreneur creates career pathways with MIT OpenCourseWare
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When June Odongo interviewed early-career electrical engineer Cynthia Wacheke for a software engineering position at her company, Wacheke lacked knowledge of computer science theory but showed potential in complex problem-solving.
Determined to give Wacheke a shot, Odongo turned to MIT OpenCourseWare to create a six-month “bridging course” modeled after the classes she once took as a computer science student. Part of MIT Open Learning, OpenCourseWare offers free, online, open educational resources from more than 2,500 courses that span the MIT undergraduate and graduate curriculum.
“Wacheke had the potential and interest to do the work that needed to be done, so the way to solve this was for me to literally create a path for her to get that work done,” says Odongo, founder and CEO of Senga Technologies.
Developers, Odongo says, are not easy to find. The OpenCourseWare educational resources provided a way to close that gap. “We put Wacheke through the course last year, and she is so impressive,” Odongo says. “Right now, she is doing our first machine learning models. It’s insane how good of a team member she is. She has done so much in such a short time.”
Making high-quality candidates job-ready
Wacheke, who holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Nairobi, started her professional career as a hardware engineer. She discovered a passion for software while working on a dashboard design project, and decided to pivot from hardware to software engineering. That’s when she discovered Senga Technologies, a logistics software and services company in Kenya catering to businesses that ship in Africa.
Odongo founded Senga with the goal of simplifying and easing the supply chain and logistics experience, from the movement of goods to software tools. Senga’s ultimate goal, Odongo says, is to have most of their services driven by software. That means employees — and candidates — need to be able to think through complex problems using computer science theory.
“A lot of people are focused on programming, but we care less about programming and more about problem-solving,” says Odongo, who received a bachelor’s degree in computer science from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell and an MBA from Harvard Business School. “We actually apply the things people learn in computer science programs.”
Wacheke started the bridging course in June 2022 and was given six months to complete the curriculum on the MIT OpenCourseWare website. She took nine courses, including: Introduction to Algorithms; Mathematics for Computer Science; Design and Analysis of Algorithms; Elements of Software Construction; Automata, Computability, and Complexity; Database Systems; Principles of Autonomy and Decision Making; Introduction to Machine Learning; and Networks.
“The bridging course helped me learn how to think through things,” Wacheke says. “It’s one thing to know how to do something, but it’s another to design that thing from scratch and implement it.”
During the bridging course, Wacheke was paired with a software engineer at Senga, who mentored her and answered questions along the way. She learned Ruby on Rails, a server-side web application framework under the MIT License. Wacheke also completed other projects to complement the theory she was learning. She created a new website that included an integration to channel external requests to Slack, a cross-platform team communication tool used by the company’s employees.
Continuous learning for team members
The bridging course concluded with a presentation to Senga employees, during which Wacheke explained how the company could use graph theory for decision-making. “If you want to get from point A to B, there are algorithms you can use to find the shortest path,” Wacheke says. “Since we’re a logistics company, I thought we could use this when we’re deciding which routes our trucks take.”
The presentation, which is the final requirement for the bridging course, is also a professional development opportunity for Senga employees. “This process is helpful for our team members, particularly those who have been out of school for a while,” Odongo says. “The candidates present what they’ve learned in relation to Senga. It’s a way of doing continuous learning for the existing team members.”
After successfully completing the bridging course in November 2022, Wacheke transitioned to a full-time software engineer role. She is currently developing a “machine” that can interpret and categorize hundreds of documents, including delivery notes, cash flows, and receipts.
“The goal is to enable our customers to simply feed those documents into our machine, and then we can more accurately read and convert them to digital formats to drive automation,” Odongo says. “The machine will also enable someone to ask a document a question, such as ‘What did I deliver to retailer X on date Y?’ or ‘What is the total price of the goods delivered?’”
The bridging course, which was initially custom-designed for Wacheke, is now a permanent program at Senga. A second team member completed the course in October 2023 and has joined the software team full time.
“Developers are not easy to find, and you also want high-quality developers,” Odongo says. “At least when we do this, we know that the person has gone through what we need.”

Hello all. This is my first tutorial on KVM Virtualization prepared as a reference and to help you automate boring GUI-based installation questions. We’re using Kickstart on KVM to deploy VMs. If you have a good hands-on knowledge of Linux and Virtualization, my bet is you have already worked with KVM and Kickstart. In case this is the first time you are giving KVM a shot, worry less since you don’t need a deep understanding of KVM virtualization internals to use this guide. Just know that Virtualization enables rapid deployment by isolating the application in a known controlled environment and adds a layer of abstraction between the virtual machine and underlying physical hardware. The easiest way to get many VMs running on KVM is by using templates and Kickstart on KVM deployment model. Major Advantages of Virtualization Service Isolation : Application isolation and elimination of compatibility issues Improved system security and reliability : Abstraction between the virtual machine and the underlying physical hardware Faster server provisioning : Use of snapshots and templates. Quicker disaster recovery : Keeping up-to-date snapshots of virtual machines – easy to redeploy Dynamic load balancing : Live migration of overload to underutilized servers What is Kickstart? A tool created by Red Hat for system administrators to help them automate installation of Red Hat Linux family of Distributions. A single file containing the answers to all the questions that would normally be asked during a typical installation has to be created. Kickstart files can be kept on a single server system and read by individual computers during the installation, ready for Kickstart on KVM. How to Perform Kickstart on KVM Installation? Kickstart installations can be performed using a local CD-ROM, a local hard drive, or via NFS, FTP, or HTTP. To use kickstart, you must: Create a kickstart file. Create a boot media with the kickstart file or make the kickstart file available on the network. Make the installation tree available. Start the kickstart installation. In this post, I’ll provide you with basic kickstart file for quickstart; you can modify and advance it to suite your use case and environment setup. Used virt-install commands are provided as well. To save you quite some time, i wrote a simple bash script that makes the process of spinning new virtual machine easy and less tiresome. Creating kickstart file This is a kickstart file to help you get started. With penchant goal, edit and save it as ks.cfg under your home user directory. cd ~/ vim ks.cfg It has below contents – modify to suit your use case ############################################################### # # Environment setup # ############################################################### # url --url="http://192.168.122.1:8090/cent7" text cdrom auth --enableshadow --passalgo=sha512 keyboard --vckeymap=us --xlayouts='us' lang en_US.UTF-8 eula --agreed reboot ############################################################### # # network configuration # ############################################################### network --bootproto=dhcp --noipv6 --onboot=on --device=eth0 timezone UTC #network --bootproto=static --ip=192.168.122.100 --gateway=192.168.122.1 --netmask=255.255.255.0 --noipv6 --device=eth0 --nameserver=192.168.122.1,8.8.8.8 --activate #network --hostname=server1.example.com #timezone Africa/Nairobi --isUtc ############################################################### # # partitioning # ############################################################### bootloader --timeout=1 --location=mbr --append="net.ifnames=0 biosdevname=0" text skipx zerombr clearpart --all --initlabel autopart --type=lvm reboot --eject # part swap --asprimary --fstype="swap" --size=1024 # part /boot --fstype xfs --size=200 # part pv.01 --size=1 --grow # volgroup rootvg01 pv.01 # logvol / --fstype xfs --name=lv01 --vgname=rootvg01 --size=1 --grow

Data recovery in Nairobi
Data recovery in Nairobi is available through many organizations. However, data can be recovered only if it has not been overwritten yet and the hard drive remains intact. There are several ways to recover files from a broken laptop or computer after an accident such as spilling coffee on your keyboard which fries both hardware and software of the device making all stored information inaccessible including contacts, photos etc..Come to us  Data recovery in Nairobi .
Data recovery in Nairobi is available through various organizations but requires that any damage done to a PC's storage media (the actual disk inside) must have occurred recently so that some critical pieces still remain for retrieval before they get wiped clean by other operations taking place thereon (more specifically: new/additional files being written over them). August 1997
But always through Peter’s bedroom in Berlin
Daraus wurde der “New Media Workshop Harare: Internet as a possibility to improve communication for private organisations”, finanziert und durchgeführt von der Carl-Duisberg-Gesellschaft.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“... Peter was extremely divided, shared and therefore failed to be well concentrated on solving some problems.”
“... Suddenly there was a maddening clicking on keyboards as all participants embarked to set their e-mail addresses in their respective computer with the expert assistance from Peter, Tevie, Jim and Thandi.
E-mail addresses set, participants started sending messages across the globe - but always through Peter's bedroom in Berlin where the Server is sitting!!
Tumblr media
Sehr visionäres Gruppenergebnis: “Use IT more widely to get quick global answers to global environmental problems”

This guide will walk you through the steps to set or change a Server’s hostname/Timezone/Date on RHEL|CentOS 8/7 system. Having the right time and server hostname is an important aspect of Linux server operations. Most applications will reference the system local time when writing logs and reporting the event’s time. The server hostname is often used for generating SSL certificates, local dns resolution, and for configuring applications. Note that setting up persistent server hostname and timezone on RHEL 8 / CentOS 8 is different from doing it on RHEL 6, but identical to RHEL 7. RHEL 8/7 uses systemd init system while RHEL 6 uses Upstart. How To Set Server Hostname on RHEL/CentOS 8|7 RHEL/CentOS 8|7 ships with the hostnamectl tool for administering server host names. To view all the current host names, use the following command: $ hostnamectl status Static hostname: rhel8.local Icon name: computer-vm Chassis: vm Machine ID: 992462394b1c4f2e80e7e2fd978f04f8 Boot ID: e10a0c6a44ff4a15b7731df1bd45d6cf Virtualization: kvm Operating System: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.0 Beta (Ootpa) CPE OS Name: cpe:/o:redhat:enterprise_linux:8.0:beta Kernel: Linux 4.18.0-32.el8.x86_64 Architecture: x86-64 Set hostname on RHEL/CentOS 8|7 To set all the host names on your system, the following command is used: sudo hostnamectl set-hostname See example below: sudo hostnamectl set-hostname rhel8.example.com This will alter static, and transient host names alike. When setting hostname using hostnamectl command, spaces are be replaced with “-” and special characters removed. Confirm changes $ hostnamectl Static hostname: rhel8.example.com Icon name: computer-vm Chassis: vm Machine ID: 992462394b1c4f2e80e7e2fd978f04f8 Boot ID: e10a0c6a44ff4a15b7731df1bd45d6cf Virtualization: kvm Operating System: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.0 Beta (Ootpa) CPE OS Name: cpe:/o:redhat:enterprise_linux:8.0:beta Kernel: Linux 4.18.0-32.el8.x86_64 Architecture: x86-64 Set Pretty host name You can also set Pretty host name with quotation marks. $ sudo hostnamectl set-hostname "Josphat's notebook" --pretty $ hostnamectl Static hostname: rhel8.example.com Pretty hostname: Josphat's notebook Icon name: computer-vm Chassis: vm Machine ID: 992462394b1c4f2e80e7e2fd978f04f8 Boot ID: e10a0c6a44ff4a15b7731df1bd45d6cf Virtualization: kvm Operating System: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.0 Beta (Ootpa) CPE OS Name: cpe:/o:redhat:enterprise_linux:8.0:beta Kernel: Linux 4.18.0-32.el8.x86_64 Architecture: x86-64 Clear system host name Clear a particular system host name and revert to the default using: sudo hostnamectl set-hostname "" How To configure Timezone on RHEL/CentOS 8|7 Systemd comes with timedatectl command used to control the system time and date. Display the Current Date and Time To show current settings of the system clock and RTC, run: $ timedatectl status Local time: Tue 2019-02-12 18:24:05 EAT Universal time: Tue 2019-02-12 15:24:05 UTC RTC time: Tue 2019-02-12 15:22:22 Time zone: Africa/Nairobi (EAT, +0300) System clock synchronized: yes NTP service: active RTC in local TZ: no Changing the Current Time – both system time and the hardware clock To set the current time on your RHEL 8, use the command syntax: sudo timedatectl set-time HH:MM:SS Example below sets current time to 6:28 p.m. sudo timedatectl set-time 18:28:00 Replace HH with an hour, MM with a minute, and SS with a second, all typed in two-digit form. If you have an active NTP service, this should fail with the error “Failed to set time: NTP unit is active“. By default, the system is configured to use UTC. You can force it to use the local time by running:
sudo timedatectl set-local-rtc true Changing the Current Date The current date can be changes by running the command syntax. sudo timedatectl set-time "yyyy-MM-dd hh:mm:ss" Replace YYYY with a four-digit year, MM with a two-digit month, and DD with a two-digit day of the month. If you don’t specify the current time, it results in setting the time to 00:00:00. So set the date with time. Example: sudo timedatectl set-time "2019-04-29 11:08:00" Changing the Time Zone You may need to first list all available time zones. timedatectl list-timezones Then set your correct timezone using the command below. sudo timedatectl set-timezone time_zone While replacing time_zone with any of the values listed by the list command. $ timedatectl list-timezones | grep Nairobi Africa/Nairobi $ sudo timedatectl set-timezone Africa/Nairobi This will set the time zone to Africa/Nairobi Synchronizing the System Clock with a Remote Server (Recommended) As opposed to the manual adjustments, you can enable automatic synchronization of your system clock with a group of remote servers using the NTP protocol. We have an article on How to Configure NTP Server Using Chrony on RHEL 8 To enable NTP service using a command as follows: sudo timedatectl set-ntp yes Cheers!. You have reached the end of setting up host names and timezone onRHEL/CentOS 8|7. Subscribe to our newsletter to receive fresh updates directly in your inbox.
