Shout out to Xena for being simultaneously a redemption story, a coming-of-age story and a love story all depending on which point of view you’re focussing on. Storytelling should be that simple and easy to follow all of the time. Let it speak for itself.

His Shadow — Strollonso
In 2016, 18-year-old Lance Stroll is on the brink of everything he's ever dreamed of — scholarships, trophies, the perfect future his parents have meticulously planned. But one wrong move during a basketball game shatters it all. Waking up after the accident, Lance isn’t just haunted by his failure — he’s haunted by the dead.
The school’s forgotten corners are filled with ghosts, but none are more captivating — or infuriating — than Fernando Alonso, a former student who died tragically in 1999. Fernando was everything Lance is too afraid to be: openly gay, unapologetically himself, and absolutely adored for it. Fernando’s short life was a bold testament to freedom, while Lance hides behind a carefully constructed image, terrified of the truth he can’t even admit to himself, let alone anyone else.
As Fernando drags Lance deeper into the hidden history of the school, Lance learns that Fernando’s death wasn’t as accidental as the rumors claim. Each revelation pulls Lance closer to the person he’s always been too scared to become, and closer to Fernando. But love with a ghost is impossible — and as Lance struggles to reconcile his feelings, he realizes he might have to choose between staying safe in the shadows or risking it all to finally live.

Have you ever noticed how as an adult, all the bright colors go out of your life? Now that I’m not a kid anymore, things always look gray, like a clothesline draped with laundry that’s been washed too many times and left to stand in the wind. I guess that’s what growing up is… it’s a fading photograph.

All Downhill From Here
In one of my college English courses, we had to write journal entries. Some were basic—the usual structure, prose, etc.; however, there were certain moments when we could unleash our creative selves onto the paper (or, in this case, the MS Word . . . screen). This entry was about recalling a fun childhood memory.
It’s also fun to look back on and see how my writing has changed from a few years ago (2018 - 2024). It’s amazing how we evolve as humans. Anyways, here’s the entry.
“This seems like a bad idea,” Greg said, scratching his head.
“Dude, trust me! It’s going to be awesome. Have I ever let you down?” I replied, smiling proudly.
We were two crazy kids who had concocted a zany idea of making a makeshift bobsled. We had all the necessary ingredients: a steep hill on a dirt road, a skateboard, a dolly, bungee cords, and pillows to cushion our knees (and for the inevitable tumble, we’d surely take a fall).
“No, but if we don’t steer right, we could crash into either pond,” said Greg.
He was right. After all, the dirt road was irregular, riddled with potholes, and had a pond on either side. If we messed up, it was bath time. Alternatively, we could have slammed into the dirt embankment on the sides of the hill going down. And, of course, there were cars.
“Don’t worry about it. We’ll be fine!” I said, finalizing the touches on our contraption.
Then we did it—the first launch. We avoided the potholes and the ponds, as well as any cars, and managed to come to a smooth stop.
We cheered in excitement.
“So, do you want to build another one?” I asked.
I know it’s not an epic tale or a groundbreaking post, but it’s special to me, which is why I’m sharing it.
Looking back, it was probably one of the most redneck contraptions we had put together. I wish we had pictures of the tree fort we built because that was a beauty. Ah. Good times.
Moreover, that hill used to look much bigger and, as the Google Map embed shows, more lively. As kids, we see a world that is much bigger, brighter, and indeed full of wonder.
We had a blast and many years of shenanigans there. I also had one of my traumatic past experiences there, but that’s a very long post for a different day.
Until next time,
RJM

"How do we forgive our fathers? Maybe in a dream. Do we forgive our fathers for leaving us too often, or forever, when we were little? Maybe for scaring us with unexpected rage, or making us nervous because there never seemed to be any rage there at all? Do we forgive our fathers for marrying, or not marrying, our mothers? Or divorcing, or not divorcing, our mothers? And shall we forgive them for their excesses of warmth or coldness? Shall we forgive them for pushing, or leaning? For shutting doors or speaking through walls? For never speaking, or never being silent? Do we forgive our fathers in our age, or in theirs? Or in their deaths, saying it to them or not saying it. If we forgive our fathers, what is left?"

It's in those quiet little towns, at the edge of the world, that you will find the salt of the earth people who make you feel right at home.
