Chapter five soon queen? Hope all is well!
Consider this my T-minus 12 hours or sooner announcement!!! I WILL be posting Chapter 5 tonight. Whether it be before or after midnight, I can't tell you, but I have tomorrow off and nothing due in the next 24 hours so I'm determined not to sleep before it's posted.
Thank y'all SO much for being so patient. All is well, just been so insanely busy that I haven't had a time to breath, let alone finish editing the chapter. I have learned so much in the last few weeks during my ICU rotations. Spent today managing hemorrhagic shock in a GI bleed patient (original bleed had been repaired and was about to be discharged when it was suddenly like a massacre 😬) and we gave 2 units of blood over the span of 1 minutes through a line in his internal jugular, then watched as they did a bedside emergent colonoscopy and put in 2 endoclips. Coolest shit I've seen in a while (well, not for him, poor guy). @fangirl-docintraining have you had your ICU rotations yet? As my fellow medical nerd who gets so excited/ enthusiastic about new stuff, you will love it!
The biggest reason this chapter has taken so long is my balance between keeping it completely accurate to 1960s medicine vs. incorporating modern elements in a realistic way because it's just hard not to and I really want to keep my plot/ outline intact. If anyone wants clarification about what elements are modern or not that I don't specify in my chapter notes, don't hesitate to ask. There are two articles that I would really love everyone to read before or after reading my chapter. For years, I have been so passionate about St. Jude Hospital and several specific doctors and the work they did/ continue to do to treat pediatric cancer. Dr. Emil Freireich essentially eliminated bleeding as a cause of death in leukemia patients after experimenting with his own platelets and finding the correct way to infuse them. He then proposed that the method of treating tuberculosis (using multiple drugs at once) could also cure leukemia. In 1962, pediatric leukemia was a death sentence. People thought it was crazy that Danny Thomas and these doctors were stating that they would find a way to cure it. Kids diagnosed would die within weeks of diagnosis from infection or bleeding to death. Their experimental treatment of combining two or more chemotherapeutic agents was seen as inhumane by many doctors, who thought that would make these children sicker and it was better to let them die peacefully. To everyone's shock, they saw success. This treatment was trialed in the early 60s, but didn't become something doctors would refer patients to St. Jude to until 1968ish. In 1970, the man behind this extraordinary discovery, Dr. Don Pinkel, was able to officially proclaim that childhood leukemia was no longer a fatal disease, with the cure rate at 50%. Today, ALL has a 94% cure rate, but the treatment remains harsh and lasts approximately 2.5 years. And despite all the hard work of researchers, other pediatric cancers such as Wilm's tumor, Ewing's sarcoma, osteosarcoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, medulloblastoma, DIPG, and more have high relapse rates and higher fatality rates (DIPG is something I encourage everyone to research and support higher funding for- a pediatric brain cancer with 0% survival rate). I actually went to a conference at St. Jude when I was 19 for childhood cancer advocates as I was a top fundraiser that year and interested in a future career there. I cannot say enough positive things about it!
So obviously, my story will deviate the timeline a little and the fictional Children's Hospital of Oklahoma (which in reality was not established until the 21st century) will be offering this experimental treatment in '65. Some of the medications and medical devices I include were not available until after '65 (for example, ports/ central lines in this particular model were not a thing), but I also make a point to use meds that were more common during the time, not include certain devices such as heart monitors, pulse ox, etc.
This has turned into a really long ramble. The point is, I hope everyone is ready to learn a lot this chapter and I encourage you to let this motivate you to learn more about childhood cancer, the fact that it is not as rare as many think, and that it is severely underfunded.
So far, this chapter is 15K words. My last few hours of edits may result in more or a little less. So get comfy and settle in when it's time to read- it's a big one with a lot going on!!

The master shouldn’t be brought back for a couple seasons and not every big bad should end up being him
strongly agree | agree | neutral | disagree | strongly disagree
You know not all is right when you sigh in relief at the showrunner saying your fave has been appearing too much lately. Because maybe, just maybe it means he recognises there's more to them than the main soprano in the "Psychological Colonoscopy of the Doctor" cantata? Like, I don't think it's just the matter of quantity but quality as well here. Again, the Master's been forced into a linear story that absolutely doesn't work for them! Either resolve their issues or fucking kill them for good, because this masochistic orgy of "behold exactly what's wrong with them, but no, of course we're not going to just deal with it" works for fanfiction (artistic expression I fully admire, but there a production issues), but not a neverending tv series that people get paid for creating. Of course, this is the same issue that's plopped on the Doctor, too, and I doubt it's possible to go back to adventures with occasional angst format that's a lot of Classic Who fans' holy grail AND THAT'S GOOD! This more introspective poetic works! But there is such a thing as too much good and I think there's something that makes them less suitable for villains than heroes? Like, with a villain, there has to be a solid fatal flaw that doesn't get patted on the back in the end, and there are very few such flaws that can be used over and over. Desire for power or survival work here, because they're both extremes of end-of-the-day common not to say healthy drives, and the beauty of thoschei is how those drives, though usually in a more measured level, aren't absent from the good guy. Complexes, abandonment issues, and all the rest of the diagnoses that get dumped on the Master lately... look, I understand those are things many people live with and never fully resolve, BUT THIS IS A STORY, IT NEEDS A FREAKING CONCLUSION.
Like, I really get the impression when Moffat came up with the redemption arc for Missy, and then arrived at the "ideal" way for how the Master's story should end, he. maybe wasn't naive enough to think future showrunners won't bring them back, but he really expected it to be at least a couple of seasons? Because there, I ended a linear story. Take a moment to go back to it. But then Chibs needed an exposition device for his Doctor apotheosis and that required the Master to be as historically rooted as possible.
Also, don't get me started on the "the Master always just comes back without an explanation uwu" thing, yes they do come back in the same regeneration, but when there's a new body THERE'S USUALLY BEEN A WHOLE EPISODE DEVOTED TO HOW THIS HAPPENED (all hail the Tooth plot).
As for the revelations... I'm a bit more on the fence with this one, because a) dress ups are the Master's thing and b) I think they're the perfect SEASONAL big bad, they just don't work as an overarching villain. Not in the least because they work best with the Doctor when they do have to unite against a common enemy. Point: people sometimes do good things for selfish reasons. Inventing the specific scenario where the only choice is between participating or not in an expanded altruistic suicide (that won't really do much difference from individual altruistic suicide) isn't the dramatic hit you think it is.
Bottom line: LET. THE MASTER. BREATHE.
#sorry of this turned into a general rant 😅#thanks for the ask it was fun#the master#the master meta#dw meta#tw: negativity#thoschei#doctor x master#tw: sui mention

Triple Threat and a Half | Rick Sanchez x reader
Much to your surprise the location on your phone led you to a normal looking house. A two story home with a lush front yard, far too nice to belong to the person you're about to steal from. Based on what Cornvelious told you, the person you're stealing from is a nihilistic highly skilled criminal. You weren’t sure how much you could trust his intel, seeing as you haven’t actually met him. Not really aside from discreet phone calls and messages with info on the guy.
With sweaty hands you double check the address, looking around at the quiet houses lined on the street. The midnight air swirled around you, motivating you to move towards the garage with a deep breath. Robbery was usually against your moral code, but much like other individuals who turn to crime, you had a good reason. Work becomes harder to find, bills keep piling up, and one day you're down on your luck when someone contacts you with a lucrative job opportunity. So you take it.
The garage door creaked loudly as you inched it up just enough to scramble under and enter. You reach for your phone's light, shining it on your surroundings. You had secretly hoped there was something horribly evil waiting for you on the other side to make you feel better about stealing. But once again to your surprise all you saw was a fairly clean and empty garage, save for some scattered boxes on the floor and tools laying on a workbench. Not wanting to stay any longer than needed, you pulled up an image of the device cornvelious had sent you. You started going through one of the few boxes on the floor. Most of its contents had strangely labeled items and miscellaneous objects. A mechanical looking arm, a bright blue box with a comically large red button, and an air sealed glass jar with a hypnotizing green substance swirling inside it. Before you could dig deeper into the box a light switch flipped on followed by a gravelly voice making you freeze.
“Touch that again,” heavy footsteps approached you from behind, “and you’ll turn yourself into a genderless cloud of regret.” The point of what you can only assume to be a gun presses into your lower back. You swallow, hard, hands shakily raising up beside your head.
“Don't shoot- please. I’m standing up now.” You slowly rise, taking two careful steps to turn around and face the person threatening you. Tired eyes stare back at you. He was nothing like what you pictured. An older man, wild hair and a set frown with tired eyes. As you looked him over the gun in his hand didn’t dare to move from your figure.
“You lost or just like rummaging around in people's garages.” He questions, an unimpressed look on his face.
“I uh, can explain.”
“If you think that's going to stop me from shooting you I'd seriously reconsider flapping your shit eater. Why the hell are you here going through my stuff?” His unwavering threat makes your eyes glassy, regretting ever coming here.
“Cornvelious! I was sent by Cornvelious. I don't know if that name means anything but he promised he could help me if I just stole something from you.”
“Jesus kid you get one empty threat and you're already spilling your guts like a colonoscopy bag at a chili cookoff. No balls, no spine- just wet fear. I mean seriously no balls. I'm surprised that alien piece of shit is still after me.” His expression relaxes, lowering the gun to his side. “Garage, run security protocol.” He turns his back, walking over to the workbench nearby as he enters a code into something you can quite see which raises a mini fridge from the table.
Security protocol activated- Intruder identified. Proceed with termination? A feminine automated voice speaks, seemingly coming from everywhere as he cracks open a can of beer, burping shortly after.
“A little late for that.” He grumbles back to the garage. You're still awkwardly standing in the same spot, hands raised as you watch him.
“You're not going to shoot me?” You ask, hoping you can at least escape unscathed. He turns to face you again, leaning against the workbench as he sips his beer.
“If i wa-Aa-nted to, I would have already. Not worth dirtying my garage with your brains. He must be really desperate if he sent you to come steal from me. What were you even looking for in my junk boxes?” His eyes narrow as he looks you up and down, waiting for your answer. You carefully reach into your pocket and raise your phone to show him an image of the device you're looking for.
“Course those fuckers are still trying to get their grubby little pinchers on my portal gun.” He lets out a half-sigh, half-growl, setting the beer can down with a clunk. “Listen kid, you should know I don't do this like ever so you might wanna pay attention if you love the sad shitty life you're living.” He suddenly stands up straight and gives you a hard stare.
“I could unionize every cell in your body and turn you into a living sheet of flesh. I mean I’ve done it before, by accident. Was funny though.” He gives a dismissive wave of his hand, tilting his head slightly as if reconsidering something darker. “But I’m not gonna. This is your first and last warning. You come near my garage again- and you die. No lectures. No second chances. Just meat confetti.”
He grabs a wrench from the workbench and points it at you. “Tell Cornvelious he’s slipping. I’m not interested in playing intergalactic fetch quests with discount bounty bait.” You can barely breathe until the wrench clatters back onto the bench and he turns around, tending to his beer like nothing happened.
You scramble back under the garage door, breathe catching in your throat. You don’t run- but half jog half scramble home constantly looking back. You make it home somehow, shaking from adrenaline and disbelief. With shaky fingers you pull out your phone and call Cornvelious.
“I’m out. He caught me. This isn’t worth it- I don’t care what you offered. I’m not dying over this.” He doesn’t get a chance to finish his sentence before you hang up and block his number.
(Back in the garage)
Rick slouches in his chair, staring into the swirling green contents of the jar she almost opened. “Garage,” he mutters, “why’d protocol activate so late?”
Intruder registered post entry. No prior threat detected.
He frowns. That never happens. His system reads blood pressure spikes, hostile intent, even stray cosmic residue. But this one? Nothing, like she was background noise.
Rick snorts. “Invisibility through irrelevance. That’s…new.” He downs the rest of his beer in one swig, eyes narrowing.
“Congratulations, kid. You just became interesting.”

this is an angry post but
it is unforgivable that I was allowed to suffer years of misdiagnosis. Over a decade of misdiagnosis. GI disorders are so prevalent and under-diagnosed.
I am permanently damaged from years of having to seek emergency care for my vomiting and stomach pain episodes. I've had so many IVs in my lifetime, so many blood draws, several vein blowouts and infiltration episodes that I now have to get another possibly permanent medical device in less than a year.
And I am terrified of getting a port! Like legitimately petrified of complications. Sepsis is a very real consideration and I just. Monday is quickly approaching and I am so overwhelmed
I should not have gone years without a GES. I shouldn't have gotten several diagnoses that are supposed to be diagnosis of elimination. Endoscopy and colonoscopy doesn't always find everything.

TW: Medical Devices
Just got out of my endoscopy/colonoscopy and it went super well! The new team and nurses are really nice. So far nothing wrong with my esophagus and stomach nor colon! So as far as we know my Crohn’s is not active right now unless it’s in the upper intestines.
Still have to do MRI, abdominal ultrasound, bone density scan and blood work - but both me and Johnny feel tons better after moving (almost immediately), so it really could have been a toxicity issue aggravating my ability to function, at least partially.
Also we took a fun picture of my hands bc I obviously have Raynaud’s or some circulation issue 😅

Furthermore, are you normal about people with stereotypically "gross" deformities or disabilities. (i.e. drooling, medical devices like colonoscopy bags, or conditions that cause consistent open wounds or sores)
yeah you're "punk" but are you normal about deformed people?

What is an Endoscope and How Does It Transform Modern Diagnostic Medicine?
The endoscope stands as one of the most transformative tools in medical diagnostics. It’s a slender, flexible or rigid instrument equipped with a light source and a camera, capable of illuminating and recording the hidden passages of the human body. But it’s more than just a device—it’s a window into the body's interior that allows physicians to see what once required surgical intervention.
Modern healthcare thrives on precision and minimal invasiveness. That’s exactly where endoscopy excels. By guiding an endoscope through natural openings or small incisions, doctors gain real-time insight into internal structures without the trauma of major surgery.
The Role of Endoscopic Technology in Minimally Invasive Procedures
Imagine a scenario where a patient complains of chronic stomach pain. Rather than relying on speculative treatment or performing exploratory surgery, a gastroenterologist can insert a gastroscope—a type of endoscope—through the mouth and directly examine the stomach lining. This approach saves time, reduces risk, and most importantly, increases the accuracy of diagnosis.
With continual innovations in optics and fiber technology, endoscopes today can transmit high-definition images, collect tissue samples, and even perform therapeutic procedures. Surgeons use them in orthopedics, gynecology, pulmonology, and more, offering solutions that are faster, safer, and require shorter recovery times.
Why Endoscopes are Essential in Early Disease Detection and Monitoring
Diseases such as colorectal cancer, peptic ulcers, or respiratory tract conditions often begin subtly, without alarming symptoms. Catching these early can mean the difference between manageable treatment and advanced-stage complications.
Endoscopy allows doctors to identify abnormalities before they evolve into serious threats. Whether it's removing polyps during a colonoscopy or inspecting lesions in the bronchial tubes, the endoscope empowers specialists to act early—and decisively.
How Different Types of Endoscopes Meet Unique Medical Needs
Not all endoscopes are created equal. Some are designed to traverse the digestive tract. Others maneuver through the urinary system. Each variation—be it the bronchoscope, arthroscope, cystoscope, or laparoscope—serves a specific diagnostic or surgical function.
Their construction varies too. Rigid endoscopes offer clarity and control during surgeries, while flexible ones allow navigation through more complex anatomical paths. Regardless of the form, what unites them is their ability to illuminate the unseen, delivering clarity where it matters most.
Endoscopy’s Future: Innovation at the Intersection of Imaging and Robotics
The future of endoscopy promises even more breathtaking advancements. Engineers and medical researchers are developing capsule endoscopes—tiny, pill-sized devices patients can swallow to scan their digestive tract. Other innovations merge endoscopy with robotic-assisted surgery, allowing for intricate procedures once considered impossible.
AI-driven diagnostics are also beginning to play a part, analyzing endoscopic video footage in real-time to highlight potentially cancerous tissue, sometimes before the human eye can detect it.
