BALIPORTALNEWS.COM, JERMAN - Kelvin Cahyanto Soetektjo, yang sering disapa Kelvin NTT, kembali terpilih sebagai pengurus Komunitas Motor Besar Indonesia (MBI) wilayah Bali dan Surabaya. Sebagai penggemar motor besar yang selama ini selalu terkesan glamor, namun pria sederhana yang selalu tampil dengan celana pendek dan sandal jepit ini, ternyata juga memiliki jiwa sosial yang tinggi. Selain rutin menggelar kegiatan sosial ke pelosok-pelosok pedesaan di Bali, NTT, Surabaya dan sejumlah wilayah Indonesia, ternyata jiwa sosialnya yang tumbuh dari hati paling dalam, juga terbawa saat ia bersama kawan-kawan dari Indonesia berlibur di Jerman. Yang mana, saat ia berkunjung ke Cologne Cathedral, yaitu sebuah Gereja Katedral Katolik yang terletak di Köln, North Rhine-Westphalia, Jerman, ia juga berusaha berbagi dengan berdonasi untuk warga kurang mampu di sana. Tentu jiwa sosial yang dimiliki, patut di acungi jempol. Karena, meski berasal dari Indonesia yang sedang berlibur di Jerman, namun Selebgram asal NTT ini juga selalu ingat untuk berbagi. “Kebetulan saat keluar, ada pengemis di dekat gereja, saya tetap berdonasi untuk berbagi kepada sesama. Meski berada di negeri orang, tentu jiwa sosial kita harus tetap berbagi,” kata Kelvin NTT yang juga masih menjabat sebagai ketua BMK-57 Denpasar, Minggu (21/1/2024).

Beautiful Images, Part II

Another Deep Dive into the photo archives, to the original Beautiful Images collection created when the site when public in 1994. These are images taken in the 80's and 90's using film cameras.

They were originally printed, then scanned at high resolution, but unfortunately when we moved from an (unofficial) corporate server to https://theotherpages.org on a public server, the images were highly reduced to save bandwidth. Here are some of those original images, (mostly) resurrected using Topaz Gigapixel and a few other tools. Not perfect, but surprisingly good all things considered. --Steve

HOW BIG?? ADVERTISING POSTER FOR THE OLYMPIC...

In an age where cinematography was still very much in its infancy, conveying the sheer size and scale of any new ship was incredibly difficult.

In the case of the Olympic, White Star created a dream image. It simply stood the giant liner on her metaphorical stern, and made her stand as ramrod straight as a space rocket.

Olympic was then placed in a kind of 'usual suspects' line up row, and then compared- favourably- in terms of size to the largest and most famous buildings and monuments of the world.

From left to right, the Bunker Hill Monument in Boston comes in at 221 feet high. Next in line, Philadelphia's Public Buildings stand 534 feet tall.

Third is the 555 feet high Washington Monument. In fourth position, New York's Metropolitan Tower soars in at 700 feet overall.

Fifth in the line up is another New York landmark; the 750 feet high New Woolworth Building.

Occupying sixth place is the RMS Olympic, improbably upended to stand a full, 882 feet and 6 inches tall!

Seventh spot goes to Cologne's 516 feet high cathedral. Next to it, the Grand Pyramid of Giza tops out at a truly impressive 451 feet high.

Finally, we see St. Peter's Church in Rome, soaring a full 448 feet into the heavens.

All of this was pretty clever sleight of hand. And it would soon be churning off global printing presses on travel posters that would be seen from Norway to New Zealand, Scotland to Sumatra.

Later, a slightly amended version of the original would also display the name of Titanic as well.

And, in one hideously improbable, massively unthinkable moment, the actual Titanic would, indeed, stand upended for real, hundreds of miles out on the darkened starlit Atlantic...
