Victoria Winters has spent her life in a foundling home, never knowing the identity of her parents. She is offered the position of governess to a young boy living in Collinsport, Maine. Hoping to learn more about her own mysterious past, Vickie travels to the small fishing village. In the coffee shop, waitress Maggie Evans warns Vickie against working for the Collins family. Meanwhile, Burke Devlin returns to Collinsport after a long absence, and meets with a detective Wilbur Strake, whom he hired to investigate the residents -- specifically Victoria's new employers who own half the town, are considered eccentric, and live in a mansion atop Widows' Hill.
