In defense of Season 6 (What we do in the Shadows)
I’ve seen talk about season 6.  How people are disappointed. How the writers have blown it, how Guillermo and Nandor are in so few scenes together, how canon has been thrown by the wayside.
So, I have to gently disagree. I think this is the best season of the series and that’s coming from a full-on Nandermo truther (with Laszlermo tendencies). I think this season HAS moved Guillermo and Nandor’s story forward. But it’s so much more than that. These 8 episodes have connected all the vampires in ways I never expected.
Think of all we learned about the vampires in just the first episode. Guillermo and Nandor apparently made an agreement to stay away from each other until Guillermo got his life together. (UNTIL. Keep that in mind.) Nandor obviously didn’t give a fuck about that and has been keeping tabs on him in secret. How else can he be so matter-of-fact about being separated from Guillermo and also, know where he was working?
Nadja has longed to interact more with humans and Laszlo forbade it, which caused a massive rift between them that lasted years. Man of science Laszlo had a dream to reanimate life out of dead tissue that he gave up on in favor of spending more time wanking. And Colin Robinson has been lonely for a real friend, even one made out of random body parts.
That’s a lot of stuff there, good stuff. Yes, we briefly had to deal with the prospect of Jerry destroying our show (okay, that was probably just me) but it turns out, Jerry was just a vehicle to reveal more about our beloved characters (I think Jerry will be a factor in the finale but that’s another story). The same with Guillermo’s departure from the vampires’ employ. It was barely a separation. Nadja and Nandor felt compelled to follow Guillermo all the way to his office, to “protect him”. And Laszlo restarted his project to create new life and allowed Colin Robinson to join in.
The writers are mixing and matching the cast in a way they’ve never done before. Nandor/Nadja, Laszlo/Colin, Colin/Nadja, Laszlo/Nandor. It’s a fresh spin on the old dynamic and it’s hilarious. And it demonstrates how much these four care about each other and that feels new, too.
As for Nandor and Guillermo, it might feel like they aren’t together as much but when they are together, it packs a punch. Except for the beginning of episode one, when Nandor childishly pretends like he doesn’t remember Guillermo, there’s been no more pretense. Guillermo has always worn his heart on his sleeve where Nandor is concerned but now, Nandor is wearing his there, too and it’s exciting to see our suspicions confirmed in a big, big way — these two idiots love each other and it’s just a matter of time before they have to acknowledge it. I don’t expect a vampire wedding in the future but something is coming. I just know it.
Episode 9 tomorrow, y’all. Episode 9 is where this show usually goes off the rails and into a ditch. So hold on. It’s gonna be a bumpy night.

Would the voyerism take on Jay's vampireness just mean that he's like Colin Robinson from What We Do In The Shadows kinda?
Hold on let me look something up...
Ok that wiki was not helpful.
In terms of inspiration I was mainly thinking of The Magnus Archives cuz, let's be honest, if anyone is an avatar of the eye it's Jay "doxx your medical documents" Merrick.
In essence he feeds off of suffering, so like instead of actually eating people he just finds someone in a bad situation and then makes it worse. In the series he was doing it on accident but had he gone full monster he would've done it on purpose, sicking Alex on people and then nourishing himself on their terror as they scream for help he refuses to give them.
Imagine if Liveleak was a creature, it's like that lol.

Hi! Wasn’t sure if you guys knew about this, but some WGA members have donated items to be auctioned off with the proceeds donated to the Entertainment Community Fund.
Bidding on these items is a fantastic way for fans and fandoms to get involved and raise even more funds for the ECF, and can be done here: https://wgaragesale.ggo.bid/bidding/package-browse.
Could y’all add a link to the WGA Garage Sale to the list of links that fans can donate to? Or make a post that contains the full list of fandoms that have items that could be bid on?
There’s a lot of memorabilia that various fandoms might be interested in (things like a varsity jacket from Veronica Mars; the Seinfeld Finale script signed by all of the series regulars; picket signs made by Conan O Brien, Lisa Hanawalt, Loren Bouchard, and Seth McFarlane; a Teamsters jacket signed by Lindsay Dougherty; Colin Robinson’s energy vampire notebook from What We Do In The Shadows; a Conor Roy for President hat from Succession…) plus other intangible gifts like personalized videos, zoom commentary sessions, meet and greets, or even a speech written by co-head of the WGAw Negotiations Committee Chris Keyser!
A more general overview, with a video introduction behind the items given by the writers themselves, can be found here: https://www.wgaragesale.org/auction-items.
Thank you so much!
Thanks for this resource! Linking below to the auction page. Check it out if you're interested in owning some super cool fandom memorabilia or rewards like meet and greets, personalized prizes and... John August helps you write your script?? Wow, maybe I'll have to check that one out.
We've considered putting together a comprehensive list of donation possibilities in the future, but that can easily lead to overwhelm and there are also a lot of pages run by other people that collect that info. Right now the WGA and SAG-AFTRA are really emphasizing the Entertainment Community Fund, hence the auction, since that fund also applies to non-SAG-AFTRA/WGA people who are also affected by the strike.

WWDITS: Demystifying The Supernatural
It would be a crime to say < What We Do In The Shadows > is just a mockumentary about Vampires. In [Documentaries Part 1] I touched on how WWDITS both references and makes fun of the library of Vampire shows and movies. The lore about them and the secret society of the other monsters that lurks in the night.
Today, I want to cover how < What We Do In The Shadows: The Series > demystifies the idea of the world of the supernatural. But before that, let's talk vampires.
Tumblr media
- Hope and Compassion is Gone -
When you Sold Out your Dream to the World
A crew of documentary cameramen has been granted access to a highly secretive society. They wore crucifixes and were guaranteed protection by the subjects.
In an undisclosed location in Staten Island. We follow Guillermo de la Cruz. Familiar of the vampire; Nandor The Relentless with married couple; Laszlo Cravensworth and Nadja of Antipaxos as well as Colin Robinson.
Tumblr media
The crew documents the lives and hijinks of the Vampires. Watching as situations unfold. Revealing the many secrets of this once secretive and dark society of the supernatural.
The series is based on the world of the film. With cameos of vampires from other popular shows as well as the original trio in the movie. Viago, Deacon and Vladislav.
Tumblr media
- This is My Hunting Ground -
Aside from showing the established world of the film. WWDITS introduces us to an ever expanding world of the universe in a natural way. The show introduces us to the Witches, Trolls, Werewolves, Zombies, Ghosts and more. Honoring their lore and tying their interactions loosely as a part of this dark community.
Such as Laszlo's cursed hat being tied to a witch, Colin dealing with an online troll being a real troll and the werewolves being in a relationship with a human who also has a vampire lover. Twilight style~ Each tie in is not just a fun cameo, but it also brings the other dark beings to life in this ever expanding world of creatures.
Tumblr media
The world also introduces a new concept. The Energy Vampire via Colin Robinson. Without going into spoilers, Colin's breed looks human and shares a fraction of the strength found in vampires but bares no weakness as of yet. Energy Vampires feed by boring and enraging its victims. Thus, sapping the energy of the person.
What the show does brilliantly is showing the believability of this new breed. Colin feels like an actual person who existed and can actually be a threat if he wants too. His ability to selfishly make vampires and humans bored or enraged makes him a frighteningly real creature that humans have actually met in real life.
Tumblr media
- My Tummy Feels Weird -
From a narrative perspective, WWDITS provides several different arcs for the characters respectively. One highlight that I'd like to mention is Guillermo's development as a familiar and as a person.
Over the first season, he went through this one-sided admiration and blind servitude towards his master to charting out a big twist of his real identity. The show displays the unglamorous side of his duty as a servant and the unfairness of the power dynamic.
Tumblr media
For every familiar, their servanthood is paid with the promise of immortality and Guillermo is no different. At a young age, Guillermo dreamed of being a vampire but he is often mistreated or is ignored when he pressed the request to Nandor.
The show also displays a deeply rooted sadness through the vampires. For being creatures of immortality. All they ever do is distract themselves with killing, sex and fun. When left alone to their own devices, the vampires are hopelessly directionless.
Tumblr media
The show also touches on the topic of how the old ways just don't fit in with everyone anymore. Such is with Nandor's problem solving skills via killing and total conquest or how the vampires as a whole have gotten soft with how they hunt.
On a progressive note, the show never openly declares the characters as queer or any of the sort. Despite being married. Laszlo and Nadja are open to being involved with other people or other vampires sexually.
Tumblr media
The show displays the act of debauchery and cheating at its finest with shameless pride but also strengthens the idea of loyalty and love.
Nandor for example, used to own 37 wives and husbands but is actively looking for a true partner who cares for him. As the season progresses, we see that he actually cares about Guillermo as master and as a friend. Nandor's action could suggest that he wishes to not fulfill Guillermo's promise to save him from the torment of the curse.
What the show does well is, it breaks the mystique of the vampires as a bunch of incompetent idiots with no drive. Thus, becoming sloppy, outdated and all too roundabout about things that is both infuriating but charmingly hilarious.
Tumblr media
- They have No Use for Your Song -
I gotta say though, for a show that mocks the existence of these creatures. WWDITS is a fun trip through and through. It adds to the development of this community but makes the darkness a lot more silly with how its subjects are down to their last braincell.
None of the vampires are good at keeping this world a secret and in fact, the idea that they would allow a documentary crew to follow them is a fallacy itself. Still, there's a certain charm to how they interact with each other and to the "crew".
Tumblr media
It felt like seeing a dysfunctional and fun band of mates just taking the piss out of each other but is also being the most loyal helpers in times of crisis.
There is something for anyone who is interested in this show of the macabre in a critical but fun way and with 5 seasons strong. They don't seem to be slowing down anytime soon. But be warned;
They're Dead and Out of This World~

Best of 2023-Best Male
Laszlo Cravensworth-What we do in the Shadows
Tumblr media
My pick for best male is Laszlo Cravensworth from WWDITS. This is the third year in a row that Laszlo has made it on my list. When I was watching WWDITS during season 5 I said, I don’t even need a specific category for him; he just deserves to be best male. So, he finally did. Because, if you told me that at the beginning of the series that this hot mess of a vampire would be one of my favorite characters I wouldn’t have believed you, but he is. He is without a doubt the vampire most in touch with his human side. I read an article once that referred to him as the human soul of the gang and I couldn’t have said it any better.
Tumblr media
He has demonstrated more human kindness then the humans (Though technically Guillermo was a vampire for most of the season). We knew that Laszlo had it in him to be nice to the people he cares for. From the way he treats his wife, his best friend, Nandor (even when doesn’t deserve it), to basically becoming Colin Robinson’s father in season 4, but the way he was there for Guillermo was nothing but heartwarming. You can practically see the shift in his expression when Guillermo confesses what he’s done. This lowly familiar he can’t remember the name of. Despite committing one of the biggest transgressions in vampire culture, Laszlo decides to be there for him. He immediately goes into dad/scientist mode and begins to try to find a solution.
Tumblr media
He keeps Guillermo’s secret and defended him when Nandor found out. And finally, what solidified my choice for making him my best male was how he took Derek to the necromancer after they killed him. He knew Guillermo felt guilty and it gave Derek a second chance at being undead. He is the heart of the series while also being the guy that sits for days just to decide how he want to organize his books. How could I pick anyone better?

My Peak TV Journey *What We Do in the Shadows*
I took notes while watching season five of What We Do in the Shadows hoping I’d be able to post something in a timely manner. By most people’s standards I haven’t, but by my own, maybe? I liked this season better than the fourth. I can’t honestly say if it’s because it was better, or I was just in a better place. In someways the seasons were interesting reflections in each other. Partially because of this, I think the series should wrap up next season.
One of my complaints about last season is that I got bored with the child version of Colin Robinson before the plot wrapped up. I missed adult Colin’s effect in the group and just wasn’t in the mood for a season long “the more things change, the more they stay the same” plot. While Colin was restored to his adult self with all the group dynamics that come with it (and no memory of the past year) there was the possibility of another “more things change, the more they stay the same” plot with Guillermo’s uneasy transition to being a vampire. But this time the act of restoring the status quo by making Guillermo a human again, has the potential to really change everything. Who is Guillermo if he no longer wants to be a vampire? How does he fit in with the group? Or does he reject it entirely.
Appropriately while Guillermo’s attempt to transition from human to vampire is stagnant, things between him and Nandor become more overtly romantic than in previous seasons. But this is with the added tension because Guillermo going to another vampire to be turned was the biggest betrayal he could do to Nandor. The climax where Nandor finds out after pretty much everyone else, and understands exactly why this transition hasn’t gone well the how to complete it has a sensitivity that is unexpected. And the fact that he can tell Guillermo ultimately doesn’t want to directly take human life, is tender.
The season saw more of Guillermo’s family than previous seasons, which made the reversion to his human state make more sense emotionally.  In his semi human/semi vampire state he sought help from Laszlo who proceeded to perform freaky experiments on him. They did not shed light on his condition, but they included some very freaky animal hybrids, (who I hope we see more of next season) and an opportunity for Laszlo to use Guillermo’s sweat as a vampire sun screen. Unrelated to Laszlo’s experiments, there was a scene where a shocked Guillermo trips booby traps that Colin Robinson set up through the house while Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries” plays in the background. It was ridiculous. It made me happy.
Speaking of Laszlo, is it just me or was his screen time reduced this season? If so why? Was it to give Matt Berry a break for personal reasons? Was it a concerted decision to prevent the series form becoming The Laszlo Cravensworth Show? At the very, least he does not currently appear to be driving plot. In the previous two seasons he was aiding Colin Robinson in his respective end of life and beginning of life phases. Here he was helping Guillermo with his stalled transition. It could be a sign of Lazslo’s character being the friendliest of the bunch, but I doubt it.  None of these characters are exactly humane.
Following up Laszlo’s lack of driving plot, it’s worth noting how little he had to do with his lady wife Nadja this season. The plot in which they interacted the most involved him struggling to make a good impression on her new human friends from Little Antipaxos, where she enjoyed getting to know contemporary people from her homeland. He eventually, inadvertently convinces them that he is the the incarnation of a legendary, piggish figure. But their general lack of conflict and interaction also made a kind of sense for Nadja’s plot. In previous seasons she regularly railed against a cursed hat Laszlo had and refused to get rid of. Last season wrapped up the cursed hat story, and so this season had Nadja thinking she was hexed in her pre-vampire life. While curses definitely exist in the WWDITS world, the show starts the storyline explicitly saying that the events that led her to think she was cursed were really the result of how much inebriated blood she drank while running a club last season. The attempts to reverse the curse led her to Little Antipaxos,  teaching about citizenship in a community college, and getting scammed by a “magic woman” who really wanted her preferred Dunkin’ Donuts to serve her again. I enjoyed all of this.
I am glad that Colin Robinson is an adult again. I loved his short reunion with his energy vampire girlfriend Evie while running for political office. I also enjoyed seeing him as a waiter and how upset he got when the too interesting.
Finally, Kristen Schall’s Guide was bumped up to a regular character this season. I think she had a similar amount of screen time this season as last, but she did drive more plot. Notably, she gave Nadja the “clues” to “prove” that she was really cursed. This turned out to be a punishment for the ways in which Nadja ignored her as a potential female friend. As much as I like Nadja, I am one hundred percent Team The Guide in this conflict. The dynamics of the characters can be described as cliques within cliques. Nadja and Laszlo’s marriage is a clique. Laszlow’s, Nadja and Nandor are a clique as the classical vampires who have been living together. Guillermo is in a clique with the classical vampires against Colon as he can feed off of all of them and they hate him for that, etc. having the Guide, who’s always known they were detached from the world, but now recognizes them as her only option for long term companionship, is exactly the kind of situation for which this show exists.

Note
Lots of people are coming out with their best shows/movies/anime etc. of the year, and since you have such impeccable taste I'd love to hear yours! Only if it's okay ofc! Have a wonderful rest of 2022 and great 2023!
ok this is the only end of year reflection i have the capacity to do tonight, lemme thiiink ummm it was a big year for things tbh!!! I'll just ramble i guess, first up...
TV SHOWS
SEVERANCE: possibly the best first season of a show I've ever seen, and absolutely the best s1 finale of a show I've ever seen, huge ups to @tricktster for recommending it. you've probably heard it a million times but if you haven't, GO WATCH SEVERANCE, it lives up to the hype.
THE REHEARSAL: the magic trick that this show pulls is so bizarre and unprecedented it's like. impossible for me to even talk about. the entire time watching it i was gaping at my tv in open disbelief. it does and says so much in the wildest ways possible I'm still obsessed.
WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS S4: three words, Baby Colin Robinson
ANDOR: I'm not a star wars guy at allll. not even a little bit. my expectations have never been high. but when i saw @variastrix loving it up on my dash i was like okaaay and holy shit. SO good. the prison arc especially was just like OUUUGHH THEMES AND DIALOGUE OFF THE CHARTS!!!
ANIME
SPY X FAMILY: what's especially fun is that we were in Japan while the second part of the season was dropping and Anya was fucking eeeeverywhere!!! everyone agrees with me cannot get ENOUGH of that funny little girl!!! best execution of fake dating trope everr the more convoluted the better.
MOB PSYCHO 100 III: ......like. c'mon what is there to even say. what's there to saaaaay! it's in my top 3 anime ever! the subversion of shonen anime has basically ruined all other stereotypical anime for me forever because it's just. so much better. so much funnier and more poignant to watch the most powerful boy ever strive to be a better person. i love that little guy and his silly conman role model
MOVIES
EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE: i feel the same way about this movie as anyone else. saw the trailer, hooked instantly, then when i actually watched it i walked out going "this is the greatest movie I've ever seen??????" insanely shot, cast incredible, the whole premise simultaneously huge as a multiverse and small as an immigrant couple in a laundromat. this movie defined my cosmic outlook on life. that nothing matters, so we should make the most out of what and who we love. in any other year this would've been my far and away fave. but then came:
NOPE: you guys follow me. you've heard it already. this movie ..... this..... FUCKING MOVIE.... haunted me from the moment i saw that chimp covered in blood. it scared me so bad i wasn't even sure if i liked it but then i thought and kept thinking AND I THOUGHT AND KEPT THINKING AND I HAVEN'T STOPPED THINKING this movie this god damn movie. it's a social commentary, it's a blockbuster popcorn hit, it's about animals, it's about people, it's a creature feature, it's funny, it's glorious to look at it's glorious and i love it so so much. Jean jacket really is a beautiful name for a baby girl.
GAMES:
VAMPIRE SURVIVORS: this game is like if you broke gaming down to it's purest chemical form and injected it directly into your bloodstream. it's a game that might be perfect in its simplicity. it's also really funny that i can be a stinky old garlic man, i like that a lot. it's free on mobile what are you waiting for.
HORIZON FORBIDDEN WEST: i feel so fucking bad for this series not once, but TWICE releasing at the same time as two of the greatest games literally ever made (i still have to beat elden ring oops) because i love these games SO MUCH! they scratch a very particular itch for me which is plenty of upgradable weapons/armor for me to chase, incredibly in depth lore, and post apocalyptic robot dinosaurs. literally no notes. i love games like this that're like "we know what you want. you want to kill a spinosaurus with a bow and arrow and afterwards treat yourself to some incredible American vistas, here, take it, enjoy." it's an incredibly Me game. probably my goty if measured by how much fun i had playing it.
ALBUMS:

Spotlight on Part 2 of the Nandermo Chronicles...
He Led Me Straight Into the Breach... and All I Got Was This Amazing T-Shirt
After finishing "On the Precipice", I pondered... is that all there is? What happens next? Is it enough to just say that Guillermo and Nandor lived happily ever after? Did they really, though?
As I began to consider that very question, I decided they probably didn't... Not right away anyway. These boys have a lot of shit to work through. And it can't all be fixed overnight. Not even with effort and therapy. Some issues require time and perspective. Showing up every day and demonstrating how much you care.
As I thought about what the not too distant future looked like for our favorite idiots in love, I decided that it seemed plausible to me that the tables had turned... Nandor, who tends to LOVE what he loves would be deeply in love. And Guillermo would love him back, of course, but this new Guillermo would be more confident and have more of a life outside of Nandor than before.
With this in mind, I wrote the first sequel to "On the Precipice."
This part is unique from the others in the series in that the documentary crew is still around and filming. This was a cool device because it allows the author to have one character point blank ask another character, 'hey, what do you think about xyz?' Or 'explain this.' The caveat being that this does not suppose absolute truth or accuracy. But it did allow for a pretty comical bit with Colin Robinson.
This part also included the introduction of new familiars and the drama that goes along with that. One of whom @weakformemo wishes to die a thousand deaths... each of them more painful than the last.
It was also at this point that the song references started cropping up... "Waterfalls" by TLC. "Brian Wilson" by Barenaked Ladies. "Ballroom Blitz" by Sweet. These songs are included (along with many others) on my Nandermo playlist:
Summary:
Seven years after calling it a wrap on the filming of the Vampire Residence for the What We Do in the Shadows docuseries, the documentary crew returns at least in part due to news of Guillermo's prominent role in a fledgling political organization to fight for the rights of familiars and fairness in vampire-familiar relations. The crew quickly discovers that things at the Vampire Residence have changed considerably and not necessarily for the better. Not all the vampires are in residence and the ones that are appear to be struggling.
Excerpt:
“Oh, hey! Oh, it’s so nice to see you again! Most of you- and a new face,” Guillermo gushed, standing up and coming out from behind his desk to greet the crew that had been gone for 7 years. “Thanks, Jane.”
“Whatever,” Jane responded, leaving the crew with Guillermo.
Guillermo confidently stuck his hand out and shook hands with the new cameraman. No more shitty sweater. He was wearing an expensive wine-colored button up with onyx cuff links.
“So where did you guys leave off with us? What was happening? It’s so hard to keep track,” Guillermo gushed.
Please swing by AO3 and check it out. If you have not read "On the Precipice" (Part 1 of the Nandermo Chronicles) I would advise starting there before reading 'Breach.'
Thanks for your consideration!

I was tagged by @duckland and @amarantoo (muchas gracias!) to list my 5 top confort characters.
This is quite hard, to choose only 5, so I'll try and be varied and choose some representatives at least^^.
In any order:
-Miles Vorkosigan Nasimith (from the mind of Lois McMaster Bujold): A favourite since I was little, I felt reflected on him and found parallelism between his life and mine. I still love these books a lot.
-Sam Vimes & Susan Sto-Helit(from Discworld, Terry Pratchett): I have to pick both, cannot choose between them, but they're like my favourites in the saga. They take no shit, get angry at injustice, they're really good at solving problems and seeing the obvious, etc...
-Sarah Kerrigan (from StarCraft): I loved her so much and cheered as she got to have some vengeance. And then she turns ok too! But to be fair I was supporting her even when she was evil:p
-The Straw Hat crew, especially Robin (from One Piece): all of them are so much fun and it's so nice to read about them. Plus they're so much anti-curent system of power and privilege....and yeah, I have a soft spot for Robin, and THAT scene was one of the best scenes ever...
-Monica & Chandler (from Friends): except for some parts, I believe Friends still manages to be really good and relatable. And these two were the best ones for me in the series, and also a good example of, in general, a good relationship.
I had trouble thinking about comfort characters and I wanted to select at least one for different media, but there's other honorable mentions like Victor & Klaus(Umbrella Academy), Colin Robinson & Guillermo(What we do in the Shadows), Ron Swanson (Parks & Recreation), all 6 main characters from The Good Place, Death, Granny Weatherwax, Angua, Tiffany Aching(Discworld ), Harry Dresden & Molly Carpenter (the Dresden Files), Arya Stark (asoiaf), Crowley (Good Omens), the Major (ghost in the shell), Aloy (Horizon), Rinoa(FF8), Arale (dr. Slump), Ranma (Ranma 1/2), Yoko Nakajima (12 kingdoms) plus so many others I may not think about ATM. Yeah I like stories and I like a lot of characters ^^''.
I tag @lorraineblack90 , @mncqvq1 , @noisycoconut , @cat-charmer , @somewherebehindthemusgo , @riveroflonging , @dying-of-the-light and anyone else who feels like doing it and sees this post (mention me later!)

Guillermo Shouldn't Become a Vampire in 'What We Do in the Shadows' Season 5 Be careful what you wish for!
SHAWN VAN HORN PUBLISHED 19 HOURS AGO
What We Do in the Shadows is a mockumentary following the lives of four very odd vampires in Staten Island. There's Nandor, who sees himself as the leader, though he's anything but. There's also horny husband and wife Laszlo and Nadja, and the hilariously dull energy vampire, Colin Robinson, who had quite the Season 4. The real leader, maybe the real star of the whole show, is Guillermo. He does everything for his undead companions from finding them human food to keeping their home maintained, but they barely notice him and usually don't care to. Sometimes he's even called "Gizmo," because remembering his real name is too much of a bother. BY
Tumblr media Tumblr media
From the very beginning of What We Do in the Shadows, one of the best characters has been Guillermo (Harvey Guillén). At first, he seemed like a trope, a weak and timid human living as a familiar for vampire Nandor (Kayvan Novak). Quickly, however, we learned that there was more going on with Guillermo than any sidekick could contain. Over four seasons, Guillermo has grown more than any other character in the series, with him now a master vampire hunter due to his lineage to Van Helsing. One thing hasn't changed in four seasons, though. Guillermo has desperately wanted to be a vampire and join in the blood-sucking fun with Nandor, Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), Laszlo (Matt Berry), and Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch). Nandor, however, constantly rejects him or makes promises that he'll turn him "some other time." At the end of Season 4, it appeared that Guillermo's dream to be a member of the undead was about to happen. While it would make for an interesting storyline, it isn't the right direction for this character.
Guillermo Has Wanted To Be a Vampire Since Day One

All Guillermo asks in return is for Nandor, the vampire he directly serves, to turn him into a vampire. Nandor always comes up with an excuse not to do it right at that moment, promising to do it later... and then inevitably failing to do so. Nandor needs someone to take care of him and Guillermo is great at it. If Nandor turns him, then he loses Guillermo as a servant. Over four seasons, Guillermo takes and takes the abuse, going from naive, to angry, to begrudgingly accepting that his vampire dreams just might not happen. Then something life-changing happens that alters Guillermo's fate: He finds out that he's a descendant of famed vampire hunter Van Helsing.
Guillermo Is More Interesting as a Human
Tumblr media
Guillermo as the familiar begging to be turned had run its course as a storyline. What We Do in the Shadows needed to shake things up, and boy did they ever. It was perfectly ironic to see Guillermo, who wanted so badly to be a vampire, to now be such a master at killing them. He was like Blade with the way he could swiftly dispatch any undead enemy who dared harm his friends. It almost came easy to him. It made his home life a bit awkward, living with vampires while killing them and all, but he was accepted because he was protecting them. Laszlo even went so far as to force Guillermo to accompany Nadja to London at the end of Season 3 because he knew he could protect her.
Still, Guillermo wants to be a vampire. That hasn't changed, no matter what. At the end of Season 4 he tells the camera crew, "Nothing is going to change unless I change it." He tells the crew they can use his room for storage because he won't be needing it anymore. We then see him go to a convenience store where his friend-turned-vampire Derek (Chris Sandiford) works. Guillermo plops down a huge suitcase full of money and tells Derek, "You're going to make me a vampire." Guillermo smiles at the camera, ready for what comes next.
It would admittedly be fun to see Guillermo as a vampire, with the possibilities that could open up for new storylines and hilarious moments. What would Guillermo do as a vampire? Would it be as glorious and satisfying as he thought it would be? How will his vampire friends react? But then what? It's a bold commitment. If you turn Guillermo, there's no undoing it. This isn't like when a sitcom puts two people together knowing they can break them up if it doesn't work. There's no way out of this. More important than a twist to shake things up is the long-term direction of What We Do in the Shadows if Guillermo becomes a vampire. He, as the only lead human character, stands out from the rest for being so different.
To turn him because Guillermo wants to be like everyone else does just that: makes him like everyone else. Guillermo as a vampire loses his uniqueness. The showrunners may be aware of this as well, for the trailer for Season 5 of What We Do in the Shadows shows Guillermo having been bitten by Derek, but not able to successfully turn. One clip shows Guillermo telling the documentary crew, "I thought the transformation would be overnight, but it's been sixteen days." He then tries to turn into a bat by saying the word and spreading his arms, but nothing happens. Now this is an interesting direction to go.
Becoming a Vampire Would Betray Guillermo's Growth
Tumblr media
Hidden not so far under the surface of the silliness of What We Do in the Shadows are other, more realistic themes, like identity struggles, sexuality, and an overall feeling of isolation. Guillermo has come out on the show, though his sexuality has not always been a defining character detail. Nandor has been married to both men and women during his very long life, and Laszlo and Nadja have both been with the opposite sex as well. It was a powerful moment when Guillermo tells his vampire family that he's gay. A cousin responds by telling him, "We don't give a shit about you being gay. We've known that forever," while the rest of his family expresses their love for him. In an interview with the Advocate last year, Guillén said, "That was interesting to think that you'd [Guillermo] be willing to risk a secret that could potentially disown you from a family, a very religious family with his upbringing -- that he'd be willing to let that go just to save the chosen family that he was living with."
Guillermo is growing. He's a warrior. There is a man in his life. He's come out to everyone he loves about who he truly is. To have him give that up to become a vampire betrays that growth. It would be akin to giving up or conforming rather instead of accepting who he is and living his best life. And that life might be leading him to Nandor, someone who is always on the prowl for true love. He even brought back one of his wives, Marwa (Parisa Fakhri), from the dead and married her again, but believe it or not, he still isn't happy. Marwa even told Guillermo in Season 4 that Nandor has said he wants to hug and kiss Guillermo. Did he mean that as a friend, or something more?
There is intrigue and laughs to be found in Guillermo becoming a vampire, that's for sure, but there's more to be found in keeping Guillermo human. Yes, there's the will-they-won't-they between Guillermo and Nandor, but beyond that, it's the continuing struggle of the only human among near immortals trying to find his place and meaning in his life. Much more interesting than a Guillermo with fangs who sleeps in a coffin is a Guillermo accepting who he is, master vampire hunter and all. And in the journey, maybe he can one day find more than just a little respect from the vampires who depend on him.

What is What We Do in the Shadows (2019) about?
Summary: "Based on the feature film of the same name from Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, "What We Do in the Shadows" is a documentary-style look into the daily (or rather, nightly) lives of four vampires who've "lived" together for hundreds of years in Staten Island. The self-appointed leader of the group is Nandor the Relentless, a great warrior and conqueror from the Ottoman Empire. Then there's the British vampire Laszlo -- a bit of a rogue and a dandy and a fop, he might say. He's a lover of mischief and a great soirée, but not as much as he loves seeing Nandor fail miserably in every attempt. And then there's Nadja: the seductress, the temptress, the vampiric Bonnie to Laszlo's Clyde. Also cohabiting in the vampire household is Guillermo, Nandor's familiar; and Colin Robinson, an energy vampire and day-walker of sorts -- he feasts on humans, but not on their blood."
