Built circa 1834, this is the sole survivor of 3 glasshouses constructed specifically for orchids by Joseph Paxton. It contained the 6th Duke's superb collection, gathered from all over the world.

Several orchids that were housed in the Vinery were named after Chatsworth, Paxton or the Duke e.g. Coelogyne cristata Chatsworth, Dendrobium paxtonii, and Stanhopea devoniensis.

It now houses white peaches, camellias, and Royal Horticultural Society prize-winning dessert grapes, Vitis Muscat of Alexandria, which were mostly planted in the 1920s.

Bought a Coelogyne flaccid two years ago, turned out it is actually a Coelogyne cristata 贝母兰. It is always risky to buy plants when they are not in flower.

Necklace Orchid (Coelogyne Intermedia, bred in 1913 Coelogyne cristata × Coelogyne tomentosa) cristata is an epiphytic orchid that comes from cool, moist areas of the eastern Himalayas and Vietnam and tomentosa comes from a slightly warmer Java and Thailand 1400 to 2000 metre mountain area. This one actually likes it a bit cool and wet when it’s growing and cool and drier when it’s resting. This is the best show I’ve had for years thanks to our lovely cool wet spring. It's time for Coelogyne cristata

Today was National Public Gardens Day and so of course I went to a conservatory. But really, who needs an excuse to go to a public garden? I never do. Anyway, I hope you made it to one today. I decided to go to Ann Arbor to Matthaei Botanical Gardens. And how nice was it, that parking was free today thanks to Domino’s?

I took a few pictures of what was flowering and just plain gorgeous, to share them with you in case you couldn’t make it to a garden today.
