The Climber's Manicure
Nails. Everyone has them. Except, it seems, for climbers. Here's a few simple things to do to keep your hands looking (relatively) normal and to keep them as comfortable as possible.
Cut and file your nails- keep them short, of course. If you file the tops after trimming them, though, the rounded surface doesn't snag as easily and means less painful tearing.
Aloe Vera- Keeps calluses soft and pliant... important for climbing, and makes shaking hands less scratchy.
The Sock Method- Chalk can dry out your hands quite a lot. To help repair your skin, use a thick lotion cream from a drugstore or pharmacy (Eucerin works really, really well), slather it on at night, and put thick socks on your hands (think ski sock material). This is also excellent to do during the winter months, it heals cracked hands and helps prevent further cracking.
As for painting your nails.....- if you climb regularly, salon manicures suck. Try this, instead: Paint your nails one color and use a crackle top coat (nail polish that splits as it dries). This looks cool, first of all, and when your nails get banged up from climbing, the crackle effect makes the damage much less obvious.
