Hiking Iceland Laugavegur is one of the most exciting hikes you can take on the island of Iceland. Crossing the mountains east and south of Reykjavik is a trip through hardened lava fields and snow-covered peaks, along gurgling rivers that smell like rotten eggs, and over tussock meadows with ancient rock formations.

I feel like the willingness to share knowledge was once a huge part of what made the climbing community what it is. I learned almost (key word there) every skill I have, from gear placement and aid climbing to rigging and rescue, from climbers before me. But these days there doesn't seem to be a lot of that sentiment over all. Part of me wonders why but at the same time, maybe it's good that people only learn from certain areas of thought. On the one hand it is, of course, good to know the right way; but on the other hand do we lose some adaptability along the way?

Fill in the blank. Aid climbing is _______! If you said fun you might be a liar or a sadist. My answer for today; climbing you can do when the ice is shit where you are and it’s too. cold to free climb. Chipped a tooth and bashed both knees after a flake I was hooked on broke 😢. I still finished the pitch, blood and pain be damned. Also I wired up my van’s batteries, lights, and fan on Friday. With all the speed records being set on different routes up El Capitan, here is a throwback to our climb up Zodiac right behind the Huber brothers preparing to make the first free ascent of the route. The brothers had cleaned the route of all fixed gear and meticulously stocked portaledges and gear at several of the fixed anchors. If you spend enough time climbing with me, you'll find I do a surprising amount of things that I will go to great lengths to make sure you don't do.

Tech tip Tuesday

Daisy chains have been a staple of aid and even trad climbing for decades. They are very versatile but have major drawbacks. This is why you should avoid using them as Personal Anchor System as much as possible. Dyneema or Dynex daisy chains use bar tacs to create pockets. They also are what's known as static, meaning they don't stretch. Combined, this means that in the event of a shock load (i.e. you fall on the chain) the pockets could explode, referred to as "pocket failure".

Now, the average daisy is rated around 20Kn of force. This, however, is the rating for the chain as a whole, not the individual loops. CAMP has attempted to compensate for this issue by creating the "daisy twist" which reduces the chance of pocket failure by wrapping and doubling the stitching for each loop. A good strategy but probably not perfect.

While it is unlikely a fall that is less than a class 2 would generate enough force to completely destroy your daisy, once even one bar tack is broken, the material is compromised.
