Robert Muldoon x Reader: Hats Off
Word Count: 1,784 Warnings/Notes: Reader taking Robert’s hat, very light scolding if you squint at it, mention of a sick dinosaur, light and brief hand pat on the butt, hugging, hand-holding, and kissing. Summary: The Reader begins to take Robert’s hat and wear it for themselves. Over time, the initial annoyance becomes endearing.
A/N: I never thought that I'd write for any character from the first Jurassic Park lol and yet here we are. I hope you enjoy reading this!
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~
  Isla Nublar, a place of work and a home away from home. The tropical foliage, usual clear skies, and noticeable humidity would look like the ideal vacation location to most, but not in the past few years. However the changes and daily work, you were most grateful for one thing: your partner.   Once built, the Visitors Center of Jurassic Park had become your home. The spacious accommodations were just a glimpse of Hammond’s “spared no expense”. It was within it that you sipped on your favorite morning drink.   “I would ask why you rise so early…but I’m sure you’ve heard that from me far too many times.” You smiled as Robert Muldoon adjusted the height of his socks.   “There are a lot of things that need my attention today. It’s best to get an early start.”   “No wonder the sun is your alarm clock,” you hummed into the rim of your mug.   Straightening up, he clipped on his identification badge. “It wouldn’t hurt for you to do the same.”   “I have plenty of time before my shift starts.”   “For now.”   “I’ll take my chances.”   “That’s what worries me,” his voice hummed low in his disapproval. The duties he had on his daily list were all important. There was no doubt in that. He had to ensure the safety of the staff and all of the future guests. With two islands containing dinosaurs, it was no light task.
  Placing your mug down, you stepped over to Robert. “Be careful,” you said, pulling him into a snug embrace.   “I will,” he said, and kissed your lips as you slowly backed out of the hug. “I’ll see you in a few hours.”   You smiled. “How will I cope?”   “Getting to work on time,” he chided with a twinkle in his eyes. Mildly paying no mind to your pout, he popped on his hat and turned for the door.   As he walked away from you, you took long quiet strides toward him. Somehow you managed to reach him just as his fingers curled around the door handle. Barely, you snatched the hat off of his head.   Pausing, he turned with a raised eyebrow. His blue eyes shifted between your own and his hat. “I have to go, you know,” he said with hands on his hips.   You smiled widely, mischievous.   Reaching up, he took his hat back. “I’ll be needing this, thank you.”
  The break on your schedule was nearing its end. As you strolled through the main building of the Visitors Center, you turned a familiar corner and spotted a certain khaki cross your vision. You smiled.   Heading down the corridor toward the Control Room, Robert Muldoon seemingly always had his job on his mind.   Taking probably the longest strides of your life, you plucked the hat right off of his head. The way his boots stopped promptly on the floor made you bite back a snicker.   He sighed. “Making a habit out of this, are we?” Slowly, he turned to find you smiling and adjusting the hat on your head.   “If the hat fits.”   “I’m sure you’d make it fit either way, love.”   “Yeah, probably,” you shrugged.   “May I?” He asked, extending out his palm to you. “I have to check the weather report.”   Though you did not entirely want to, you handed his hat back.   “Thank you. Now don’t you have to get back to work yourself?”   “Yes, in…” you paused to check your watch, “five minutes.”   “Then you better get going, hmm?” The smirk on his lips was not so subtle.   “If you say so,” you teased back, slowly turning away.   “I do. Now, come on,” he said, lightly patting your backside.   “I’m going… I’m going,” you laughed.
  Lunch time. It was one of your favorite parts of the day. And not just because your stomach was growling like an unknown subspecies of a dinosaur. No, it meant quality social time with either your coworker friends or, as was the current case, your partner.   “What do you think they’ll be serving today?” You asked, walking up to Les Gigantes restaurant within the Visitors Center. Beside you, Robert thought carefully. “I think Hammond mentioned sea-bass,” he recalled.
  The pair of you only had to wait a few moments at the entrance before a host came over to greet you.   Allowing other staff to eat there was great practice for both the kitchen staff and those in the dining room. And you knew that both yourself and other employees at the park greatly appreciated it. And the food was always deliciously exquisite.   As you were both walked over to a table, you took the time to look around. No matter where your eye sight landed, there was dinosaur theme. Obviously. Yet tasteful. From the long wall mural of the creatures guests would soon see in the park, to a call back of dinosaur fossils engraved, beautifully winding around the columns within the restaurant.
  Halfway through the room, you swiftly swiped the hat off of Robert’s head. No one was looking anyhow. Except him, his brow raised from your antics, but otherwise said nothing.   Soon, you were seated near the windows, displaying the lovely sunny day, and exchanged thank you’s with a promise of cold glasses of water. Once the two of you were alone, Robert’s attention went back to you, having just put the hat atop your head with a satisfied smile.   “No hats at the table, love.”   You pursed your lips, but agreed. Lightly taping your shoe to his, hidden under the long white tablecloth, you then removed the hat. Placing the hat off to the side of the table, you leaned back onto the chair and let out a contented sigh. “Anything new to report?” You asked, looking at him from across the small table.   “I had to tranquilize a sick triceratops for Doctor Harding this morning,” he said, fiddling with the corner of a napkin.   “Is this the same trike from last month?”   “Yeah.”   “That’s strange. I mean, the poor thing obviously, but…does he know why?”   “Not yet,” he frowned. “Tricky business, dinosaurs.”   Reaching over, you gave his hand a squeeze. “And you’re doing a great job.”   Sharing a smile, he placed his other hand on top of yours.
  Walking carefully down the ramp, birds chirped happily in the morning breeze. After a short holiday on the mainland, it was only a matter of time before you found yourself on the East Dock of Isla Nublar again.   Once other employees parted from your view, you found a sight that made your heart skip. Your partner, Robert Muldoon was waiting next to a red gas powered jeep. You shook your head with a smile. He had calculated and waited for your approximate return to the island. Of course he would. And of course he would know. You would be surprised if there was something on the island that he did not know about.
  He met you halfway as you approached, grabbing your bag off of your arm.   “Did you at least sleep last night?” You teased.   He smiled. “Yes, how was your holiday?” He asked, before walking a few strides over to the jeep.   “Good. I got you some things.”   “You didn’t have to do that, love.”   Easily placing your bag in the back of the vehicle, he turned his attention to you. Arms out to his sides, he welcomed you into a hug. “I missed you.”   Giving his body a soft squeeze in your arms, you kissed his cheek. “I missed you too.”   Leaning out of the hug, your smiles shone as bright as the other’s. Robert placed a proper kiss to your lips. Afterward, you both took the time to enjoy seeing and being together again, reunited. And even in such close proximity, you took the hat right off of him and placed it on your own head.   He sighed and shook his head. “Wasting no time.”   Your laughter ignited his own. Kissing you again, he muttered. “You’re ridiculous.”   Laughing again, you kept an eye on him as he walked around to the driver’s side, each of you getting into a seat. “And you love me,” you smiled brightly.   “I do,” he said, turning the key in the ignition, “there was never any doubt.”
  Mission: snack time. The objective? Retrieve and eat the food before the end of your break. Sure, you needed a little bit of food to hold you off until dinner, but your were also having such a good day so far that you thought that you deserved a treat.   Walking into the vending machine area, you were prepared. What surprised you was the lack of people present. No one was in there. With a mental shrug, you stood in front of one of the vending machines. Looking through its window of opportunity, you weighed out your options until you came to a decision. With the coins already in your hand, you inserted the proper amount of change and pushed the button for one specific treat. Hearing it fall to the bottom of the machine, you smiled. Success.   Kneeling down to retrieve the sealed food from behind the oddly quiet metal flap, you finally grabbed it. You had been looking forward to your little reward for almost an hour since you had decided on the idea. Though as you pulled back, you noticed movement to your right. Boots. Robert’s boots. Standing up, you felt something touch the top of your head. Realization hit as soon as you looked into Robert Muldoon’s soft blue eyes. His hat was on your head, and he put it there, not you.   Smiling at the other, you were glad that no one else was around.   “How did you find me?”   “You’re not hard to track down, love.”   You smirked. “Security cameras don’t count, Robert.”   He adjusted the brim of the hat before letting his hand caress down your cheek, and held you gently. “Think of it as scarce tracks or broken leaves on a trail.”   You laughed quietly, “I don’t think you really needed to use a camera to find me.”   Bumping the tip of his nose with yours, his smiled widened. “You’re probably right.”   “Probably. But I’m not sharing my snack with you.”   He nearly rolled his eyes. “I didn’t walk all the way over here to take your food. Be logical.”   You pecked your lips to his briefly. “Is that what you were after?”   “In a word,” he said, his smile returning.   “Unfortunately we’re running through my break time, so—” You curled your fingers into the fabric of his shirt and pulled him impossibly closer. “Your move.”   He eyed your lips. “You always did look good in my hat.”
Thank you for reading!
Maybe I'll write more for Muldoon in the future?? Who knows! :)
