time stood still.
colin isn’t sure if he lost moira or if she lost him but when he returns from the smoking room, she’s nowhere near the potted palm he left her parked at.
if their mother found out, it’s 50/50 on who would hit the floor first so mustering whatever is left of his sobriety, he takes on the winding rooms of the verney manse to track her down. moira is unlikely to get into much trouble at a society party but she’s also not unlikely to get bored and find or create some. best to hedge his bets and find her before any of that. it’s not as though spending the season escorting moira has been much of a trial, physically or intellectually. most of his official duties have been limited to scowling effectively and keeping her away from americans. moira usually shoos him away at some point so he’ll leave her to her friends and he’s always grateful for the dismissal - when it’s agreed upon.
she’s not on the dance floor (probably for the best, as there are enough americans here to make their mother faint in outrage). nor is she on a balcony (also for the best because, again, americans) or crept into the smoking room. he asks someone to report if she’s in the loo or the retiring room but no one who looks a bit like him in a wig and a dress is in there. rapidly sobering, he rushes down another hallway with every intention to do a second lap when he hears moira’s distinct laugh coming from the library. he hadn’t thought of the library. moira doesn’t read, has said since she was a child that the letters dance around the page and it’s not worth the trouble. but, as a place to squirrel herself away, it is perfect. he just hopes it’s not with some potential suitor - the family dueling pistols haven’t been used in a century and are back home in cadder. fortunately, she’s curled on a sofa with a friend, both of them howling with laughter.
“moira,” he says as sternly as he can muster. “this isn’t the plant i told you to stay by.”
she stops laughing abruptly and shrugs. “i got bored and then ran into ginny.”
“you know you’re not supposed to be off on your own at these things.”
“oh, thank you, mother, i didn’t realize. besides, i’m not alone. ginny is here. ginny, my brother colin stirling. colin, ginny bell.” she waves her hand from ginny to him, him to ginny in introduction as she sips her drink. “gin’s a girton girl so you two can be brainy together.”
colin smothers a sigh, though he’s used to moira’s claws. in truth, they’re about as weak as a kitten’s. “ignore her,” he says, offering ginny a hand to shake. “i usually do.”
she laughs and something roots inside him. he’s seen ample beautiful girls but ginny from girton outpaces them all - pretty in a polished, english rose way, perched on the settee next to moira in a swirl of pale pink satin. her face is angelic but she has clever, watchful eyes that look as though she doesn’t miss a single trick. when she shakes his hand, it’s not the soft, fleeting shake of a debutante but a full press. there’s also a fat diamond on her left hand. lovely, clever girls aren’t thick on the ground in mayfair - of course she’s been snapped up already.
“it’s a pleasure to meet you,” she says diplomatically. “moira always talks about her brothers. good to put a face to the name.”
“whatever’s she said is a lie, unless it’s good and then it’s true.”
ginny laughs again. “are you also still at cambridge then?”
he’s never regretted graduating more. “i finished last year. trinity.”
“ah. my fiance was st. john’s.”
“my condolences,” he says, assuming that she knows the rivalry between trinity and st. john’s. god knows that he does, having participated in a few pranks that ranged from harmless to borderline theft (if punts even counted). “and who is the lucky swain?”
she twists the ring around her finger, whether conscious or not. “clayton mandeville, if you’re familiar with the name.”
oh, he’s familiar with clayton mandeville. the harrow crowd isn’t so large that he doesn’t remember every single horse’s ass he met there. some of those horse’s asses are now among his best friends now. mandeville isn’t one of them. there isn’t a particular reason, no hazing or usual boarding school nonsense - only that mandeville was an ass kissing bootlicker who always rubbed colin the wrong way. he’d been friends with james and, since colin always thought of james in similar terms, that was damning enough.
he knows he can’t offer condolences in this case, however joking and manages to grind out a congratulations. there’s a heavy tread of footsteps in the hall outside and colin regrets ever starting this conversation because of course it’s mandeville. it’s not enough that he had to chaperone moira to this party or that the most beautiful and clever girl he’s met in months is engaged: he needs mandeville as a grand finale.
“stirling, old man,” he booms, somehow managing to slap colin on the back and pump his hand at the same time. “gin-gin, what are you doing hanging around this old boot?”
colin wrenches his hand free as politely as he can. “mandeville,” he grunts in greeting. “i’m escorting moira for the -“
“i say, is jicks about?”
jicks, colin remembers with a shudder. that’s right, james was in the club enough for a terrible nickname. colin was not, a fact he thanked god for every damn day. ginny apparently is not as lucky. moira had called her gin with a soft g, as in her favorite drink. mandeville had said gin-gin with a hard g, making her sound like a pampered pekingese, making her not only beautiful but patient as a saint.
moira, who has been forcing down a giggle this entire time, finally jumps in. “i don’t know a jicks but james is at a shooting party.” she sips her martini slowly and gives him a dagger sharp smile. “colin is my escort for the season.”
“stirling and i were at harrow, gin-gin,” he explains. her eyebrows arch but her smile stays polite. “he’s jicks’ baby brother.”
“yes, we were all among the harrowed.”
“harrovians,” mandeville corrects. “come now, stirling. you can’t have forgotten already.”
“i always preferred the harrowed.” colin says and ginny laughs, quickly smothering it with a sip from her champagne flute. “more apt.”
mandeville smiles, looking baffled and smug at the same time. colin itches to throw a punch but reminds himself that lady verney prizes her antique carpets and he’s probably too old to be throwing whisky fueled punches at a society party. “i don’t see what you mean,” he says finally. “everyone had a jolly time, seems to me.”
“perhaps,” colin responds, itching for either a drink in his hand, an exit, or that punch.
“colin didn’t get a nickname at school,” moira adds. “that’s why he’s so crabby about it.”
“we tried corker,” mandeville says. “didn’t take.”
“because my name is colin, not corker.” no, it’s absolutely time for that drink now. “moira, i’ll be in the smoking room. please don’t scandalize the family.”
she shoots him a sharp, mocking salute.
“and a pleasure to make your acquaintance, miss bell. i hope to see you more this season.”
he doesn’t both to address mandeville on the way out.

Oh boy, my database loves questions like this OK. I can't guarantee this is complete, but it's a ton of them. Includes mentions as well as appearances:

I'm collecting Holmesian Johns, so far I've got two coachmen, two doctors, a murderer, and a bank robber. I would appreciate the submission of any other men named John from the canon with the story they appear in and ideally their profession, as I plan to put them in a spreadsheet for comparisons.

Another great question. I know you asked for most wanted man of color, but I do want to mention that we currently have zero nonbinary characters. We also don’t have any trans characters on the masterlist. We’re also lacking severely in the body diversity category, so we’d love to see some plus size, Deaf, blind, or otherwise more diverse than the stick thin, white, hearing and fully-abled status quo for fcs. So we’d definitely like to see a few nonbinary fcs, a few trans fcs, a few Deaf fcs, a few plus sized fcs, and more diversity around campus.
As far as men of color are concerned, I’d love to see Craig Robinson, Glen Davis, Anthony Anderson,  Charles Michael Davis, Daveed Diggs, Omar Ayuso, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, John Boyega, Dev Patel, Harry Shum Jr., Wentworth Miller, Jacob Artist, Takamasa Ishihara (Miyavi), Michael B. Jordan, Alfred Enoch,  Dyllon Burnside, Jamaal Swain, John Cho, Henry Golding, Nico Santos, Remi Hii, Shuhei Kinoshita, Charles Melton, Jake Choi, Ross Butler, Godfrey Gao, Manny Jacinto, William Jackson Harper, Masi Oka, Sendhil Ramamurthy, Leonard Roberts, Santiago Cabrera, and Bruno Fabre.
While we’re here, some nonbinary celebrities include: Reece King,  Pidgeon Pagonis (intersex), Rain Dove, Angel Haze, Tyler Ford, Elly Jackson, Janelle Monae, Indya Moore, Ruby Rose, Sam Smith, Shamir Bailey, Bex Taylor-Klaus, and Nico Tortorella.
While we’re here, some transgender celebrities include: Skylar Kergil, Laverne Cox, Elliott Fletcher,  Amiyah Scott,  Maya Taylor, Kitana "Kiki" Rodriguez, Brian Michael Smith, Angelica Ross, MJ Rodriguez, Dominique Jackson, Kingston Faraday, Janet Mock, Carmen Carrera, Zach Barack, Chaz Bono, Erika Ervin, Gigi Gorgeous, Trace Lysette, Alexis Arquette, Isis King, Jamie Clayton, Hari Nef, Andreja Pejic, Jen Richards, Jake Graf, Harmony Santana, Arisce Wanzer, Laith Ashley, Aydian Dowling, Jenna Talackova, Munroe Bergdorf, and Hailie Sahar.
While we’re here, some Deaf celebrities include: Sean Berdy, Treshelle Edmond, Marlee Matlin, Deanne Bray, Ryan Lane, Chella Man, Austin P, Mackenzie, Nyle DiMarco, Emilio Insolera, Whitney Meyer, Ace Mahbaz, Shoshannah Stern, Andrea Ferrell, Terrylene Sacchetti, Ashley Fiolek, Russell Harvard, Anthony Natale, Daniel Durrant, Robert Demayo, T.L. Forsberg, and Katie Leclerc.

Parish Church @ Clayton Village Sussex by Adam Swaine Via Flickr: St John the Baptist's Church, Clayton..St John the Baptist's Church is the Church of England parish church of the village of Clayton in Mid Sussex District, one of seven local government districts in the English county of West Sussex. The small and simple Anglo-Saxon building is distinguished by its "remarkable" and extensive set of wall paintings, dating from the early 12th century and rediscovered more than 700 years later. Much of the structural work of the church is 11th-century and has had little alteration. The church, which stands in the middle of a large churchyard and serves the small village of Clayton at the foot of the South Downs, is part of a joint parish with the neighbouring village of Keymer

Franny’s NPC Music Pals
Alternatively: McKala rudely writes a novel about Daniel Maitland and everyone else just gets bullet points.
.
Obvs she’s got a million but these are her main NPC music buddies that will be referenced in game.
Daniel “Dan” Maitland (June 14, 1980)
FC: Martin Sensmeier
Born in Alaska, moved to Payne Lake, Georgia when he and Franny were in middle school
Alaska Native, Tlingit and Koyukon Athabascan
Beginning of his contact with Franny
Daniel has been Franny’s best friend since middle school. They were an inseparable trio with the late Molly Vaughn, who was Franny’s best friend since Kindergarten. The three of them got matching tattoos when they were twenty. It’s bluebonnets because of the song Cowboy Take Me Away
Daniel and Franny got a second matching tattoo the year Daniel was inducted into the Native American Music Awards Hall of Fame and they were both inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame -- it’s matching banjos on their wrists
His dad always liked country music so he got into it a little as a kid, but mostly listened to rock in the early 90s, got real into grunge, but in late high school he rediscovered country and bluegrass music
He and Franny played in a rock band in their last two years of high school but they were both getting really into country and bluegrass together at this time so they’d get together and jam
Acquiring a love for country/folk music
Daniel has said in interviews that, “Unlike Franny, my music taste wasn’t very diverse until I was in  high school. I was a product of the 80s and 90s, you know, rock n roll, grunge, Franny and I were even part of a rock band with some classmates. I got a car and could drive us around. Franny usually commandeered the cassette player. She really opened my ears to influences outside of rock music.”
On how a Nirvana fanboy grew up to study bluegrass music academically and become a bluegrass musician; “It was really our senior year of high school that I fell head over heels for country and bluegrass music. He isn’t always considered country, but I discovered the music of John Denver in the late nineties. After his death, Franny and I went to a record store and purchased one of his Best Of compilation albums because all we really knew [...] Country Roads, the obvious. We sat on my bedroom floor, I had my guitar, Franny had her thrift store mandolin, we played with that album and came up with harmonies until my sister bangs on my door at almost midnight to tell us to shut up. I found a cassette tape we recorded from that day actually, I still have it. We have a lot of recordings of our early- I don’t even want to call it work, we were just playing around. That night sent me down the rabbit hole.”
He hasn’t just ditched rock music though, he’s a guitarist and backup singer in a female-fronted alt-rock band Venus and The Flytraps.
He has a prolific career as a songwriter, a successful career as a solo artist, he and Franny Robinson form an americana-bluegrass duo called Dara & Danny, and he’s one of the members of a kind of “supergroup” of musicians living in Appalachia called Pardon My Banjo. Daniel used to play mandolin in a band called NDN Cowboys- a country-folk band made up of all Native Americans, but he left the band on friendly terms in 2010, the year after Dara & Danny was formed.
Daniel went to East Tennessee State University to pursue a degree in Country, Bluegrass, and Old Time Music, the only place in the world to offer such a degree.
 Personal Life
Daniel was born in Juneau, Alaska, to a Koyukon-Athabascan mother and a Tlingit and white father. His paternal grandfather is of English, Croatian, and Czech descent. Daniel maintains a home in his native Alaska, and in Kentucky, his primary residence. Shortly after his birth, he, his father, and his siblings moved to the Hoonah–Angoon Census Area where they lived in various communities with friends and relatives of his father, primarily Hoonah and Pelican, while his mother worked as a civil engineer in England and sent money home. He didn’t live with his mother until, in 1991, she got a job opportunity with the Georgia Department of Transportation, and the family relocated to the town of Payne Lake in Clayton County.
“Payne Lake’s this little nowhere town sandwiched between Jonesboro and Lovejoy, in the rural part of Clayton County,” Maitland explained in an interview. “You’re driving south from Jonesboro, you blink and you passed through Bonanza and Payne Layne, then you’re in Lovejoy.”
Daniel became a classmate of Franny Sor Robinson at Lovejoy Middle School and Lovejoy High School. “She’s been my best friend for 30 years,” Maitland said in a 2021 interview. “It’s been a gift to know her for long. We’ve been through marriages, kids, all of the good and bad in life together. It’s great to have somebody besides your family and partner to lean on and to knock some sense into you when you need it. Apart from my family, the only non-negotiable people in my life are Franny and, uh, Madalaine, my oldest kids’ mom. I’ve always just had a better time being one or two token guys in a friend group of mostly women.”
In 2009, he and Robinson formed the duo Dara & Danny together after having regularly collaborated since the start of their music careers.
Twice divorced, his divorces were the inspiration behind Dara & Danny’s “The Divorce Album”, a critically acclaimed and fan-beloved album about divorce and the lead up and aftermath. Daniel wrote most of the lyrics and Franny wrote the music to go with Dan’s lyrics, which was unusual because she usually writes most of the lyrics. In addition to his divorces, Daniel’s had several rocky serious relationships that have served as song inspiration.
In 2003, Daniel married Madalaine Snow, daughter of English banjo-player John Mitchell and North Carolina Cherokee and Lumbee Native American activist, sociologist, poet, and musician Atsila Snow in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. They had two children together, son Larkin Maitland Snow (b. 2003), and daughter Kalia Maitland Snow (b. 2004). They divorced in 2006 but they’ve remained friends.
Snow’s children and older step-children from her current relationship occasionally visit Kentucky with Maitland’s children. “They’re my kids’ siblings. They’re welcome in my home anytime for a trip to the mountains with or without my kids.” Maitland has said in an Instagram live with Kalia, where he was teaching other dads how to do their daughters’ hair. “Her brother -- okay, for the sake of clarity I’m going to say just once stepbrother and stepsister, but those aren’t words we really use in our family. Her brother and sister literally call me like ‘hey, Dan, can my friends and I come crash at your place some weekend this month? We want to go hiking and white water rafting somewhere different’ and I’m like ‘great, any vegans or food allergies I need to know about for dinner?’ If you are my kids’ family, you are my family too. I stay at Maddy and Eric’s house when I have a show within an hour and a half drive to hangout with them and Larkin and Kalia. Eric and I have gone on fishing weekends together. We’re very fortunate that our divorce was a very mutual, natural conclusion to that part of our relationship, and that we’ve gotten to maintain a wonderful friendship. I feel like our marriage ending made my family grow, not shrink. And I hope all of Larkin and Kalia’s siblings through Maddy and Eric feel welcome in my family. Like a weird bonus uncle.”
Larkin and Kalia mainly lived in Swain County, North Carolina, with their mother and attended New Kituwah Academy, a private Cherokee-language-immersion K-6 school. In 2019, Kalia moved to Cumberland, Kentucky to live with Daniel so she could graduate from high school there and get Kentucky tuition at University of Kentucky.
In 2006, Daniel began dating Canadian actress and Mohawk indigenous rights activist Gina Taylor, but they split in 2009. They have one daughter together, Ariadne Maitland (b. 2007). Daniel is on good terms with Gina, and Ariadne lives primarily in Kentucky with him.
He briefly dated Oscar-nominated actress Amanda Dunham in 2009.
He married Australian journalist Sasha Teller in 2010. They divorced in 2014 and had two children together, boy girl twins Jack and Maxie (b. 2011). In 2018, he sued her for primary custody, citing Teller withholding his right to see the twins. He won primary physical and joint legal custody of Jack and Maxie, and was court-ordered to have the twins spend Christmas and three weeks in the summer with Sasha in Australia.
In 2019, his son Larkin came out as pansexual and two-spirit. Dan retweeted their tweets that clarified their pronouns are “he/xe/they” and that “I don’t dislike the terms nephew, son, grandson, but do not call me a man.” He has been supportive of his son’s identity, appearing at North Carolina and Kentucky pride events with them, his daughter, and their mother.
In February 2016, Daniel began dating American artist, poet, writer, and singer-songwriter Whitney Sullivan (born April 8, 1991). Her mother is from the Zuni tribe and she grew up on the Zuni reservation with her siblings, mother, and her father, whose ancestry comes from the Lummi, Ute, and Omaha tribes, and one Irish great-grandfather, hence the last name.
On her friend’s current girlfriend, Franny Sor Robinson has said, “If Daniel don’t marry her, I might have to.”
............
