Going from rural living to city living is weird. Used to be Mom and I’d go outside and smell something uniquely bitter-sour-sweet and I’d go “smells big” and she’d be like “could you go take care of it?” and I’d go out and find a sheep or deer in the bush and that’d be my afternoon. “America has no culture” is an inherently racist statement. Especially when talking about California, which has enormous populations (yes, plural) of Hispanic and Asian immigrants.

It’s such a self report that you see the American hegemony, the American monolith, as a singularly white entity that’s worthy of scorn. I want that person to look at the Black American NYC Miku design and tell me with their full chest that that isn’t culture. Especially when modern pop culture owes so much to Black American culture — hip hop, language, streetwear and fashion, pop music, jazz — as is actively erasing their roots, saying all of America has no culture is a dumbass statement.

Also, “all the US Mikus are dressed in generic casual street style for coolish weather.” The original Brazilian Miku is wearing sunglasses, a crop top, short shorts, a bikini, and flip flops you absolute dunce. If you’re gonna be rude at least be consistent.

It’s so funny seeing the problems people have with this show and just going *shrug*. The show itself is so ambitious that it was bound to have holes in the narrative, but like. “The adults only remember what’s convenient”—yeah, kinda? Kinda the idea? Do you remember every instance of what you did when you were eighteen, decades ago? I don’t. I definitely do not. And there is so much I know I’ve wallpapered over out of shame and regret and embarrassment—as a very normal person with a terribly boring upbringing.

Imagine spending two years where every day bleeds into the next, where you’re doing unimaginable things just to get by, where you’re sometimes reveling in the worst shit you could possibly be doing because it makes you feel alive? You’re telling me you’d cast that all in stone, memory-wise? Nah, dude, you’re pushing that shit down. You’re fine-tuning it in your head so it’s fuzzy at best and flat-out erased at worst. You think at forty these woman have just been chilling with their most reprehensible memories? Shauna absolutely did not. Taissa canonically repressed everything she possibly could. Natalie sank into drugs. Van ran away. It’s only when they’re together and they’re forced to actually interact that they start behaving like their teenage selves again. It’s only when you come back upon your old classmates that you fall into old patterns. Because doing otherwise for twenty-five years would have undone them completely. They did forget. Not completely, but the way you always forget huge swathes of your childhood. And then it’s easier to make the story what you can live with.

Shauna? Oh, she was kind of always writing, good with a knife, feel like she stressed me out sometimes, but I had my own problems. Oh, Tai? She was intense and ambitious and…did that ever damage me directly? Can’t recall. Van? She was sweet and funny and told stories. That’s probably it. Misty? Yeah, she was the outsider, she wasn’t even on the team. I remember making fun of her, but haven’t we all been there? Lottie? Where did she even go? We just lose track of old friends sometimes. Nat? Nat’s been in and out of trouble for years. Hard to remember what she even looked like when she was small and blonde and…and…rough? She was rough, right? Yeah. Yeah, the yearbook pictures back that up. Jackie? A tragedy. Just so sad. Anyway: life to live, groceries to buy, work to do. Anyway: don’t need to waste any more mental energy on that. Anyway: wait—why is someone sniffing around the story? What even is the story? It’s bad. It’s bad, why would we want to remember? It’s bad, and the details are coming back, and oh no, oh god, we can’t bury it any deeper.

What we’re watching in the adult timeline is far from flawless, but they are remembering as they go. And they’re coloring their own memories, which are really just memories of memories. Like Nat seeing Travis in the dead-wife light, they are still writing the narrative the way they can live with. But their stories are going to start butting up against one another. And the only way through is to be the last one standing: because then you can believe whatever you need to. Whatever lets you keep standing tall.

Sooooo because I’ve been seeing connections to Bobbys arc in all the Halloween episodes it got me thinking about the costumes from this seasons Halloween episode and how I thought at the time they were meant to be relevant to each characters arc for the season because it’s something the show likes to play on - giving hints through the set and costumes - I just hadn’t figured it out and then didn’t really think on it more because we got Eddie dancing and Buck escaped his dull, uninspiring relationship and I got distracted like the audhder I am!!

Then I saw something on twitter and Bluesky earlier and all the dots connected and I was right - the costumes are all about each characters arc for the season.

Mad scientist Hen - upcoming biohazard arc

Chim as Jason - a serial killer - Maddie getting kidnapped and nearly killed by one! (Which was also why Doug used the name Jason back in s2 - it was a play on the same thing!)

Vampire Bobby - vampires are undead and lore says they sleep in coffins - Bobby is about to be buried alive in a coffin - it’s a play on death and resurrection both catholic and vampiric (proof he won’t die!!)

Werewolf Eddie - transformation and identity - in modern literature and tv/film the werewolf has become connected to the idea of hiding who you are and being othered - and that has been taken up by the queer community because it is something they identify with - so Eddie’s arc about his identity and who he is, is clearly a queer one.

Cowboy Buck - hiding behind a giant stache - it’s about Texas but also about recklessness and impulsivity - which are considered cowboy traits, and in the uk a cowboy is someone who is false or dishonest - which with the theme of the season being lying and fakeness - would fit with the idea that Buck is hiding his true feelings (behind a moustache too big for his face!), that he’s not being honest about them - and that is connected to Texas because we’ve started to address that concept now that Eddie is there - because that’s where his heart is. Even Tommy is part of this costume led arc nod - Buck finds a corpse (which he thinks is fake but turns out to be real - which is a subversion of the real/fake thing and is also why in part it is dressed in something similar to Eddie’s bachelor party outfit - because it’s all about subversion and Buck having things the wrong way around) which is a representation of Tommy and why he sleeps on the couch like a corpse - which was clearly a direction and not his bad acting!! Billy was already a Tommy metaphor - losing his posse etc in the same way Tommy is feeling the loss of not being a part of the 118!!

I really do love the costume team so very much - they just keep on knocking it out of the park at every opportunity!

saw this junko analysis but tumblr won’t let me reblog it so i’ll just post what i have to say about their incest claims regarding this infamous dr0 passage here:

okay so first off a really important aspect of this scene that people tend to forget is that mukuro is talking to junko. to mukuro, ryoko is junko.

second of all there’s nothing incestuous about this scene. people just misunderstand mukuro’s character, the nature of the abuse she experiences at junko’s hand, and how that impacts her behavior. what’s happening here is the product of junko’s constant cruelty and withholding of love.

in this specific scene mukuro is talking to an amnesiac junko and for the first time ever she’s finally able to tell junko to her face how much she loves her, how she’d do anything for her, how badly she wants her to be happy while also reenforcing how special their bond is without being punished. this scene is attempting to portray her excitement and her obsessive nature when it comes to junko, which is not objectively sexual. op is labeling it and assuming it’s sexual, which again is not objective whatsoever.

an essential aspect of the despair sisters dynamic that people fail to recognize is that mukuro and junko aren’t just siblings: they’re twins. the bond and the love between twins is different and significantly more intense than a bond between regular siblings. in every sense of the word, junko is mukuro’s life partner: they were together before they were even born. they came into this world together, hit their developmental milestones together, grew up completely and utterly together until mukuro left for the fenrir. think about it: mukuro’s twin sister, her life partner, her other half, the person she loves more than anything and anyone in the entire world is addicted not only to hurting her in ways that cause her extreme emotional agony but to depriving her of the love and connection she needs to survive.

mukuro can’t express her love and affection for junko in a regular way because she gets punished for it. it gets in the way of junko’s despair so she has all of this love inside of her with nowhere to put it so of course she’s gonna gush about how much she cares for and understands junko to others. it’s a way for her to feel connected to junko. one of the beliefs that keeps mukuro afloat is that she’s different than other people, that she’s special to junko, that she understands her in a way nobody else ever could. (she’s right about those things but that’s besides the point). but junko will never let her feel special or feel loved. junko is junko so mukuro doesn’t get to experience either of these things naturally.

in a sense, mukuro is starving, and when you’re starving, your entire world centers around food. it takes over your mind, seeps into your dreams. your actions become increasingly more erratic and frantic the hungrier you get. that’s what’s happening with mukuro. she’s starving for junko’s affection and for an openly loving connection with her twin sister so it makes sense that she’d be devouring every little scrap of connection she could find and forge. it isn’t as odd as people think for her love for junko to overflow and take on an obsessive quality because really, talking about their connection is one of the only ways she can truly experience it.

i’d also argue that the use of the word “ecstasy” isn’t compelling textual evidence for incestuous feelings whatsoever, one because it’s a translation and two because even if it’s exactly the same in the original language as it is in the translation the use of awkwardly ostentatious language fits with the convoluted writing style and exaggerated descriptions that are consistent throughout the text. the verbs and modifiers are so overdone it almost becomes difficult to follow at times.

by definition, “ecstasy” is “a state of extreme happiness or pleasure,” which isn’t inherently sexual. it’s a word commonly associated with sexual pleasure, but it has other unsexual connotations as well. it gets its sexual connotation because it’s often used when describing the sensation of physical sexual stimulation or an orgasm, of which mukuro is experiencing neither, obviously. if we’re attempting to deduce why a translator would choose the word “ecstasy,” its more likely because of its connotation to a drug high. throughout the franchise despair is given an addictive almost drug like quality that induces feelings of euphoria and extreme pleasure. mukuro isn’t just talking about her connection to junko but also junko’s connection to despair, so technically that checks out.

personally i think it’s most likely just another example of the ostentatious hyperbolic word choice and style we see throughout the text as well as just mukuro being strange lol. she’s definitely an obsessive weirdo but there are reasons for that that make significantly more sense than incest.

if this were truly the objective analysis that op claims it to be, the fact that that dr0 passage is taken from a fan translation of the text would’ve been taken into account. indirect implications hinging on word choice can easily become muddled by the translator’s bias, personal interpretation of the text, and writing style, which is especially relevant in this case considering that the translation isn’t official.

also…their doubling down on the fact that despaircest is so objectively present in canon that they don’t want to hear otherwise from anyone is bizarre. it’s an incredibly odd hill to die on for someone who allegedly doesn’t like despaircest. my “objective analysis” is that thou doth protest too much.
